Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Robert Spencer in FrontPage: Another Day, Another Jihad Massacre

Jul 23, 2016 9:29 am By Robert Spencer

This time in Munich. My latest in FrontPage:

Munich police

The events unfolded in predictable fashion: a young Iranian Muslim opened fire at a shopping mall in Munich while screaming “Allahu akbar,” and initial mainstream media reports were that the gunman was a “right-wing extremist,” lashing out on the fifth anniversary of the Norwegian madman Anders Breivik’s massacre, while screaming out his hatred for foreigners.

As it happened, it was someone else screaming his hatred for foreigners at the jihad murderer, not the other way around, but once again, the lie had gotten halfway around the world before the truth had a chance to put on its shoes.

And the same old comedy, the familiar one that plays out every week now in modern, multicultural Europe and North America, duly played out again, to an increasingly bored and indifferent crowd. Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae informed the world that the young jihadi had no known links to jihad terror groups, and added: “The motive or explanation for this crime is completely unclear.”

Unclear? Really? What is it about “Allahu akbar” and the gunning-down of innocent civilians that you don’t understand, Herr Andrae? And the answer, of course, is: everything. Hubertus Andrae, and Angela Merkel, and Theresa May, and Manuel Valls, and John Kerry, and Barack Obama, and every last one of the other Western leaders are resolutely and determinedly ignorant about what it means when a young Iranian Muslim screaming “Allahu akbar” opens fire in a shopping mall.

What, after all, could it possibly mean? This young man must have come from a troubled home, no? He must have grown up in poverty and been denied access to all sorts of economic opportunities that were open to native Germans of his age, right? He must have been “radicalized on the Internet” by shadowy forces that somehow possess the magic power to turn benign, peaceful Muslims who are a benefit and asset to every Western nation into misunderstanders of their own religion who suddenly and inexplicably discard the peaceful Islamic teachings they have imbibed from youth in their Western mosques, in favor of a twisted and hijacked version of their religion that leads them to think that treason and mass murder are not only commendable, but blessed by the Almighty – isn’t that the case?

The Munich shooter’s motive is completely unclear, because we don’t yet know if he was teased in school or on the job, or if he had trouble getting a job in the first place, or if he had psychological problems, or if he was a brooding loner who always left his moderate Muslim friends disquieted – the only thing we do know is that he couldn’t possibly have been motivated by a religion that exhorts its adherents to “slay them wherever you find them” (cf. Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, 9:5).

No, none of that is true, and one wonders if even the European and North American political and media elites believe in their own nonsense anymore. The Munich mass murderer was motivated by Islam, pure and simple – by its teachings of warfare against unbelievers and the necessity to subjugate them. His war cry of “Allahu akbar,” revered by jihadis for its power to “strike terror in the hearts of the enemies of Allah” (Qur’an 8:60), demonstrates that.

The Islamic State’s repeated calls for the mass murder of civilians in Western countries also demonstrate that. Hubertus Andrae, and Angela Merkel, and Theresa May, and Manuel Valls, and John Kerry, and Barack Obama, and every last one of the other Western leaders persist in pretending that incidents such as the mass murder in Munich on Friday, and the mass murders in Nice, Orlando, Brussels, Paris, San Bernardino, Chattanooga, and elsewhere recently are all separate, discrete criminal acts, unrelated to one another and all requiring extensive investigation to determine the motives of the perpetrators.

That proposition is not only false; it’s a Goebbelsian Big Lie. These are not criminal acts. These are not the acts of the psychopathic or the disenfranchised. These are acts of war, battles in a larger war that has been going on for 1,400 years and is picking up speed in our own age, courtesy of our willfully myopic and feckless leaders. Unless and until Western authorities begin to treat each of these incidents as part of a larger war, they will continue to misdiagnose the problem and apply the wrong solutions.

And that is the one thing they are certain to do. And so there will be many, many more Munichs. Watch this space next week for my comments on the next jihad massacre and the next flurry of predictable denials and obfuscations. My comments next week will be much like my comments here, because the actions of the elites after the next jihad attack will be much like what they have been today. What is it going to take to get leaders who are in touch with reality? Seriously, is that really too much to ask?

According to the media in my country, it was another case of mental illness…more specifically depression…
The man was interested in mass murders and was also inspired by Breivik..
Possibly another police mystification, using the initial rumours that it was the terrorist who had shouted “I had foreighners” (when in fact someone had shouted “damned foreighners” and he had answered “I’m German”)

    • خَليفة says

      Jul 23, 2016 at 10:06 am

Yeah, he was depressed because he had not previously killed enough kuffar to impress his imam.

The stupidity here is that people who are seriously depressed think to kill themselves, not innocent others.

      • Shane says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 10:52 am

Yes, he was suffering from a mental illness – devotion to Islam. As Robert has stated many times, the surest way for a muslim to get to muslim heaven is to die while fighting the enemies of Islam. When muslims want to repent for being bad muslims, fighting and dying in a jihad is the best way to go for them.

I’m with on most issues, but this one seems to be a crazy kid moreso than a Jihadist.

I read one report that stated he yelled alahu akbar but another report said he targeted foreigner and yelled abo turks.

Hard to tell right now but this one may not be Jihad related.

Yeah, the fact that he’s a “refugee” from Persia is a coincidence. The UN should pass a rule whereby if a mass murderer is not in possession of an official membership photo ID from ISIS or Al Qaeda then it’s just insanity. The Islamophobia must stop.

      • MM says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 11:11 am

He’s not a refugee but a descendant of refugees. And he was bullied in school that’s kind of established. He also clearly doesn’t sound like a Jihadi in the video. He clearly says there that he is in therapy for mental disorder. It might also be his family flew from the Mullahs and he was bullied by his Muslim class mates because he was not a Sunni or not a practicing Muslim at all.

    It’s like the media is wearing a cloak of dhimmitude;
and the populace have drank the cool-aid.

In saner times people would use their brain.

IF a Buddhist minister made a public video asking followers to pin Bohdi tree leaves ( or Bo tree, a type of fig ) to public bulletin boards to remind people of peace and love, AND bo leaves started being found on public bulletin boards, THEN a reasonable person would conclude that it has something to do with that Buddhist minister’s video.

IF the grand wizard of the KKK asked followers to put burning crosses on certain people’s lawns, AND burning crosses started showing up, THEN you know who to investigate.

IF ISIS asks …. we already know that one…

    It’s a no-brainer.

So the real question is why is the media and political leaders not coming to the obvious conclusion?

    • Tanya says

      Jul 23, 2016 at 10:20 am

He was Shia – not related to ISIS, they want the Shia Muslims dead.
There was something in a video from the shooting, about his having been bullied… But Germans don’t do that, the Turks do it, and also other “cultural enrichment”…
It is possible that he tried to kill Sunni muslims – 3 victims were Turks and 3 from Kossovo (almost certainly Sunni muslims).
Nevermind, whether it was related to ISIS or not, it was done by a Muslim, shouting “Allahu Akbar”, and like it was said, depressed people do not go shooting in Malls (i.e. when they are not Islamic “cultural enrichment ” )

      • Hwilsongoon says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 10:36 am

I read this. This is a good slant. Maybe he was trying to kill sunnis

      • خَليفة says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 10:59 am

Sunni and Shia ARE related because they both have the same Koran and verses like 9:111, 9:123, 2:216, 2:244, 4:76,

And although they each view the other as apostates, they still share a great deal of islamic ideology.

You are correct in that ISIS was not his motivation, but clearly the Koran was ( whether or not he was reminded of a verse by what ISIS said )

  5. Jerry says

    Jul 23, 2016 at 10:12 am

Spencer is right, if our “feckless leaders” aren’t honest about the cause of terrorism it’s like wearing a blind fold while fighting crime. We will never develop a strategy of prevention if we keep ignoring the cause. We’ll always be at the mercy of islam’s doctrine of terror and can only react to each individual “fire.” But once the motivation for these crimes is acknowledged and understood we can act to prevent the fire before it happens. One thing would be to allow Spencer back teaching our law enforcement about jihad indoctrination. Another would be to seriously cut muslim immigration and to enact anti-sharia legislation. And if our leaders set a truthful tone about islam then the public would be more aware of how islam can undermine our democracy, peace, and freedoms. None of this is likely to happen if our “leaders” keep lying. People will be far more inclined to act to prevent jihad in all its forms if the truth about islam wasn’t treated like a shameful thing. Trump has helped us a lot in this area but more needs to be done. Just because muslims are afraid of the truth about their “religion” doesn’t mean we have to be. The truth never killed anybody, but denying the truth about islam is causing untold death and suffering.

Sorry Robert, but this time I am really not convinced. The guy standing on the parking roof in the video is clearly the same guy as the one shooting in front of the McDonald’s. The conversation is not easily audible, but he says something like “I am German, born in Germany and under treatment”. He does indeed not seem to be saying anything against immigration, and the German cursing him seems to yell anti-foreigner things at him. But crucially, at that moment he does not say anything islamic either. He just seems confused.

The Allahu Akbar would be essential info, if correct, but CNN does not even seem to have that part of the interview with this witness named Lauretta on tape (let alone the Allahu Akbar itself). So this is second hand information. While shooting in front of the McDonald’s I do not hear him say anything either.

On the other hand, as far as I can tell the connection with Breivik is only based on the date coincidence, but perhaps there is more than that. If no islamic literature or dubious friends are found, I think the crazy kid theory is more plausible, even if he is indeed a muslim. There have been plenty of such attacks by non-muslims, so why can’t it simply be a muslim who goes crazy, without any religious agenda?

    • Hwilsongoon says

      Jul 23, 2016 at 10:34 am

Im not sure about this one.

I know its not cool to say this but we seem to be bending the truth to make this one a jihad attack.

He shouted allah akbah a good clue. But he couldve said this to piss off his muslim victims?

But his victims were mainly foreigners. A strange target. And yes i know muslims are also caught up in jihad attacks in the west but his target was a multicultural area.

Maybe he considered himself a german nationalist??

Still not enough facts yet to prove this is jihad. This is out there like the “nice machete man”, who it turns out was walking his puppy dog and obviously carrying the machete for protection.

      • MM says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 11:50 am

Right, we don’t have to bend truth like the left does. Also lunatic shooters don’t always act based on Islam.

However, we can exclude that he considered himself a German nationalist. He grew up in Germany but in a multicultural part of the city – you even here this from his foreign accent. People growing up among native speakers don’t have such an accent. It is very unlikely that he got in any contact with German nationalists there.

      • JIMJFOX says

        Jul 23, 2016 at 12:56 pm

Most of his victims were foreigners/muslims/aliens…

Random shootings produce random results- he seems not to have selected his targets,
as those who plan a massacre usually do.
Still, he may have been insane or off his tree on drugs…

I hope when Trump wins the presidency, which will happen if there is any vestige of reasoning remaining among a large enough portion of the American people, he will purge the entire government of the Mohammedan apologists and the multicultural propagandists, and concurrently allow Robert Spencer and others like him to begin to bring honest analysis to our government and law enforcement officials about the real and present existential dangers bearing down on the country.

    • William says

When you understand that the left are not on our side (civilization’s side), then everything they do makes perfect sense.

It’s obvious that third-world jihadists aren’t on our side. The aims of the left are harder for many to understand for some reason. But when you appreciate that the left’s end game has always been to tear down civilization and build something else, then everything they do becomes clear.

    Another excellent article.

Why would we believe anything the alphabet outlets have to say on this, when they were so heavily invested in the mental gymnastics required to believe that this was an incident related to White Nationalism?

Why do the alphabet news outlets, and government agancies believe that they can be so obviously invested in painting false narratives, over and over and expect us to believe anything they say?

I’m to the point now that I DO NOT believe anything they say. It might just be me, but you don’t get to lie to me, and expect me to ever believe you.

That said, I do have a few issues with this case, first of all, it doesn’t appear to fit the classic mold due to the high probability that this guy was Shia. This type of behavior seems to be more indicative of Sunnis.

Other than that, I don’t trust the mentally ill rat hole, and all of the other stuff,
such as he was bullied, which is being tossed out there at this time. Exactly how Islamic culture played a roll in this is open to debate, but I’ll leave my mind open for now.
