Australia’s SBS: Islam not responsible for honor killings and female genital mutilation

“Islam not responsible for ‘honour killings’ and female genital mutilation, experts say,” by Peter Theodosiou, SBS, August 28, 2016:

Cultural expert Professor Sahar Amer believes Islam is being “wrongfully accused” of inciting people to commit acts such as ‘honour killings’ and female genital mutilation.

The University of Sydney academic said such assertions were the cause of a rise in anti-Islam sentiment, or Islamophobia.

Her comments come following the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Europe and the Middle East, as well as calls from Senator Pauline Hanson and television personality Sonia Kruger for a ban on Muslim immigration.

“What strikes me in Australia is not the lack of information, so much as the resistance to accepting the information when it [is] circulated,” she told SBS.

“In the Qur’an it says very clearly, that if you harm on a single human being, it’s the same as if you had killed all of humanity.

The Qur’an actually says: “Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one — it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, after that, throughout the land, were transgressors. (5:32).

Amer wants you to believe that this verse upholds the Western view regarding the infinite value of each life. In reality, it is not a general prohibition of killing — there are big exceptions for those who kill “for a soul or for corruption in the land.” Second, this is not a general command, but one only for the Children of Israel. Third, “many of them, after that … were transgressors” — so all it is really saying is that Allah gave a command to the Children of Israel and they transgressed against it.

Also, it is followed by 5:33, which specifies the punishment for the corruption and transgressions of the Children of Israel: “Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.”

Thus this passage is explaining what must be done with Jews who reject Muhammad, not dictating lofty moral principles. Ibn Warraq sums it up: “The supposedly noble sentiments are in fact a warning to Jews. ‘Behave, or else’ is the message. Far from abjuring violence, these verses aggressively point out that anyone opposing the Prophet will be killed, crucified, mutilated, and banished!”

“The terrorists are clearly not listening to the Qur’an’s message, which is to be very peaceful. Islam believes that you should never be forced to do anything they cannot understand rationally.”

“O you who have believed, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you….
A people asked such before you; then they became thereby disbelievers.” (Qur’an 5:101-102)

Professor Amer said the root of Islamophobia stemmed from ‘misinformed’ politicians such as Hanson, labeling her call to ban Muslim immigration as “absolute horror”.

“To me it reveals that the people who are in charge of making laws and educating the public, are themselves completely misled and misinformed. They are exploiting that misinformation to spread more fear,” Professor Amer said.

“It’s unethical and needs to change. Politicians need to be called upon and held responsible for all the fear mongering they are propagating.”

Responsible in what way? Amer is apparently calling for criminalization of criticism of Islam.

‘Honour killings’ and female genital mutilation

Professor Karl Roberts, expert in policing and criminal justice at Western Sydney University, said assertions that Islam was directly related to ‘honour killings’ were false.

He said the practice, which he explained as murder motivated by somebody trying to defend the honour of their family or community, had its foundations in customs within rural communities in certain parts of the world – not in Islam.

Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide. A manual of Islamic law certified as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy by Al-Azhar University, the most respected authority in Sunni Islam, says that “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2). In other words, someone who kills his child incurs no legal penalty under Islamic law.

The Palestinian Authority gives pardons or suspended sentences for honor murders. Iraqi women have asked for tougher sentences for Islamic honor murderers, who get off lightly now. Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but “the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour ‘provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.’” And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.”

A recent case occurred in Pakistan where a social media star was allegedly murdered by her brother, who claimed she was ‘bringing dishonour’ to the family with her pro-women posts.

“It seems very much related to cultural belief systems rather than religion,” he said.

“There is no part of the Quran that talks about ‘honour’ as being a fundamental thing.

“Where ‘honour killings’ are most common are places like Pakistan, areas of India and Arabian areas, where Islam is dominant religion.

“‘Honour’ evolves in very rural areas, where there are no police forces or rule of law. The thing that makes communities function and ensures that people behave in appropriate ways is the value of ‘honour’.”

Senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, Heather Barr, said the same ‘anti-Islam’ stigma existed for the practice of female genital mutilation, where parts of a woman’s external genitalia are removed.

UNICEF estimates that more than 200 million girls and women in 30 countries have been subjected to this practice, of which more than half live in just three countries – Indonesia, Ethiopia and Egypt- while roughly 44 million are girls below the age of 15.

The World Health Organisation has classified the practice into four categories, which are distinguished based on the location and extent of the cutting.

Ms Barr said the practice was associated with efforts to control a female’s sexuality and chastity, and based on the idea that it would discourage sex outside of marriage.

“The desire to prevent girls and women from engaging in ‘illicit’ sexual behaviour is linked to cultural ideas about family honor and the fear of a family being ‘shamed’ by the sexual or romantic behaviour of a girl or woman within the family,” she told SBS.

“In some societies, FGM is so widespread that it may be difficult for a girl who has not undergone FGM to marry, another factor which creates pressure on families to continue the practice.”

Ms Barr said FGM occurs within communities of differing religions, and not exclusive to any religious teachings.

“Many people who favour FGM claim that it is required by religion, but this is a weak argument,” she said.

“FGM is not consistently practiced across any religious group, and often you see that FGM is practiced in only one certain communities within a country. A number of Islamic scholars have called for an end to FGM, saying that it is not only not required by Islam, but in fact is in conflict with Islam.”…

FGM is widely reputed to be a “cultural” practice, but actually it is sanctioned by Islamic law: “Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female) (by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male, but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the bazr ‘clitoris’ [this is called khufaadh ‘female circumcision’]).” — ‘Umdat al-Salik e4.3, translated by Mark Durie, The Third Choice, p. 64

I pray she somehow makes her way to this website and sees the light.

Plus, she is very stupid. In Islam, if a practice is unacceptable then it becomes HARAM. Examples: drinking alcohol, eating non-halal meats, eating outside fasting hours during Ramadan, etc.

Based on her profile found by efoc, Sahar Amer is a highly educated scholar who for some strange reason – seems to be in love with Islam and its subjugation of women. For her to cherry pick date for the objective of giving a totally distorted view of Islam seems to be inconsistent with the thinking of a scholar. Could it be that she is showing the ultimate in confirmation bias, that is, “We know that Islam and Muhammad are good, pure, and wonderful”, so then, any data that contradicts that image must be discarded or ignored.

I can see how it would be possible to be a male Muslim apologist. Islam treats women as second-class citizens – always subservient to the male. Islam allows each man to have his own mini-haem of 4 slave-wives plus an unlimited number of slave girls. But how is it possible for a female to be a Muslim apologist? Do women like the subservient slave role? The only way that I can see this is by having the female child subjected to intense Islamic brainwashing. She then internalizes the idea the Islam is good and so is Muhammad. From then on, all of her intellectual power is directed to defending, supporting and confirming that idea.
Do we know anything about Sahar Amer’s early childhood background? My quick look at Google did not come up with anything other than her resume.

The way she misquotes 5:32 is a disgrace to science. No reference, no context. This verse is an extremely useful red flag. You can almost wait for it: a few paragraphs, and yes, there it is: ‘the quran says that if you kill a man it is like killing all of mankind”. A video by David Wood about this verse is what opened my eyes about islam less than a year ago, and I have heard and seen Robert give the same analysis several time as well. There is no room for discussion here. You can read the quran in twenty translations, but the conclusion is the same. No decent person would dare to quote 5:32 together with 5:33 as evidence for something good in Islam. I have seen many islamophiles disqualify themselves with this verse.

A striking difference between islamophiles and “islamophobes” is that the latter always prove verse numbers and context, as Robert does above. I have two guesses why Islamophiles usually do not do that: a) they got the quote from a muslim, and did not check it themselves or b) they know very well that the context would completely destroy the quote, as it nearly always does.

But she is an academic with impressive credentials. PhD from Yale, chair of department, etc. For her, there are no excuses. There are only two possibilities: she is incompetent (because of not checking her sources), or a fraud (because of deliberately misquoting). It is not even necessary to discuss her arguments regarding honor killings or FGM. This verse alone disqualifies her.

Thanks to Allah for plagiarizing 5:32 from the Talmud, so that we can use it to expose idiots.

Islam dindu nuffin! In unrelated news, experts like Peter Gotti, Sammy Gravano, Richard Martino and Marat Balagula say the Mafia has nothing to do with organized crime. They are quoted as saying:

The notion that the Mafia is somehow related to criminal activities stems from misinformed politicians. The people who are in charge of making laws and educating the public are themselves completely misled and misinformed. They are exploiting that misinformation to spread more fear. It’s unethical and needs to change. Politicians need to be called upon and held responsible for all the fear mongering they are propagating.

  5. Kay says

It’s really astounding how so many people continue to believe that Mohammedism is blameless.
I think in order to see there’s a problem they would have to see 100% of Mohammedens engaging in ALL the horrors at once: mutilating their daughters, killing non-Muslims, “marrying” several, killing their sisters etc., raping, planning terrorist assaults.
This can’t happen of course because the females can’t rape and marry 4 women, so that would be enough for them to excuse the threat of death for apostasy from Islam, the kidnappings and forced conversions.

Hopefully others will access more information and not only this bland justification.

No, Sahar Amer, politicians have every right to question and criticise a belief system that calls for the murder of non-believers. This is not fear mongering.

What needs to change is your putrid belief system, started by Mohammed, which calls for the enslavement and/or killing of non-Muslims, the mistreatment of women and homosexuals and the suppression of the freedom of conscience – all of this is illustrated from the Koran, Hadith and Sira.

In all of the stuff you put on your page, I notice that nowhere is the study of the Islamic trilogy mentioned. Why is that? Instead, you are more concerned with the “main conceptual paradigm” underlying your “entire research program” which is “the notion of “borders” (cultural, linguistic, historical, and geographic)” plus the stock standard Saidist study of “orientalism”.

Please Amer, it is time you read the Islamic trilogy – I challenge you. And it shouldn’t be a problem for you really: after all, you are a “doctor”.

        Excellent! And correct!

The “book” they have written is actually totally dependent on previous texts – Jewish and Christian texts…unfortunately, there was no translation of texts about Jesus on the Raabian peninsula for some hundreds of years… The prophet was instructed by Jews and a few Christians (Christians who may even be accounted for heresy…).

If this “book” they have written would have been produced today at just any University, it would be scrutinized and considered be “plagiarism”. I would like to know how much of “original material and ideas” there are about Islam in their “book”… There cannot be a worldwide “patent” on a single way to worship God, whom no one has ever seen… Besides this, and I think it is clear out of the debate, just anyone who oppose just anything about Islam, its “book” and its “champion” are actually “against” their “religion” and by that already under condemnation according to their “book”… No end on these errors… Just “converting” from Islam to the Truth is a crime to the people of Islam! But, it is too obvious that the “blasphemophobia” is ruling and choking their minds. The fear is no longer about God – but people (rulers and mullahs!?). Their conscious and common sense is not allowed to speak to them anymore.

So, the fact that the vast majority (in the 90% area) of honor killings and FGM are perpetrated by Muslims is just a coincidence.

Well, who would asset otherwise but a bigoted Islamophobe?

Truly, the almost daily attempt to exculpate the many barbarisms which Islam endorses is wearing thinner and thinner, not just by the year but by the month, even by the week, perhaps even by the day.

One sentence is true. The other is false.

Iraqi Kurdistan has a high rate of FGM .

    Chaldean Christians are Kurds.

    ROFLMAO

    • gravenimage says

      Aug 30, 2016 at 2:28 pm

The idea that Kurds are majority Christian–as Mazo is implying–is just absurd. In fact, Kurds are 98% Sunni Muslim,

FGM is at times practiced by non-Muslims; particularly where they are a small minority in Muslim-majority countries like the Copts in Egypt. But it is overwhelmingly a Muslim practice. Where it is found outside of Africa, it is almost entirely a Muslim phenomenon.

Moreover, Muslim clerics defend FGM on entirely Islamic grounds. All the Sunni Islamic schools of jurisprudence either mandate FGM or consider it meritorious; not one is critical of the practice.

Al Azhar, the seat of orthodox Sunni Muslim learning, issued a Fatwa that was authored and proclaimed by the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar. The fatwa insisted that it is impossible to abandon the lessons of Mohammed in favor of the teaching of others, such as doctors, because the science of medicine evolves. The fatwa then recommended to the Islamic community that female circumcision is a duty, and that the responsibility of female circumcision lies with the guardian of the girl.

Here’s an article on efforts to end FGM in Kurdistan. All of the references are Islamic:

“FGM: ‘It’s like neutering animals’ – the film that is changing Kurdistan”

      https://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/oct/24/female-genital-mutilation-film-changing-kurdistan-law

“A mullah tells the film-makers that “Khatana [the Kurdish term for FGM] is a duty; it is spiritually pure.” That is the position of the Shafi’i school of Sunni Islam that is practised by Iraqi Kurds. It is the same branch of Islamic law that predominates in Egypt, where studies show that up to 80% of women have been mutilated…”

Craven, one of your fellow posters on here who claimed to have travelled to Iraqi Kurdistan in the past claimed that Chaldean Christians were Kurds.

“There are no Muslims in Hangzhou”

She is not an expert on Islam but as Robert puts it an expert on misinformation and disinformation.

What rubbish do they teach in universities these days!

    http://sydney.edu.au/arts/slc/staff/profiles/sahar.amer.php

I am a specialist of comparative, cross-cultural relations between Arab and Muslim societies and Western cultures (Europe and France especially, and the United States) from the Middle Ages until today. I have published extensively on gender and sexuality in Arabic and French literature, on Franco-Arab and Arab-American postcolonial identities, and on Muslim women veiling practices. The main conceptual paradigm underlying my entire research program is the notion of “borders” (cultural, linguistic, historical, and geographic), not as elements of separation and division, but rather as fluid spaces of cultural exchange, adaptation, and collaboration.

In my most recent book is entitled What Is Veiling? (forthcoming in September 2014 from the University of North Carolina Press, USA), I offer a concise introduction to one of the most visible, controversial, and least understood emblems of Islam, the veil, and I explain the role and significance of veiling in the religious, cultural, political, and social lives of Muslims, past and present. I show that the meaning of Muslim veiling extends well beyond the religious and political accounts that are often considered as the totality of most discussions of the topic. I thus address all the major aspects of veiling, including history, religion, conservative and progressive interpretations, politics and regionality, society and economics, feminism, fashion, and art.

Sham, nothing you retrieve and cut and paste here will change one person’s knowledge of Islam. We know it for what it is; A misogynistic, murderous, pedophiliac and oppressive attempt to control stupid people who are the result of first-cousin marriage for generations (Also a Muslim tradition.) It is what it is and Mohammed (May pig s**t be on him) was nothing more than an illiterate mentally deranged camel driver who hit upon a way to gain other illiterates to commit foul deeds and oppress women.

There was not and never will be anything “Holy” about Islam. Give it up.

Another deluded multiculturalism fantasist. The statistics on FGM are there for all to see. Here in Britain, the countries of birth of the reported cases of FGM in 2015 were: Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Egypt, Sudan, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Malaysia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Not a “Muslim” problem? What is even more worrying is that these people are presumably now British citizens but continuing the primitive ways and savagery of their countries of origin.

So, why is “sharia” an attempt to return to a state of life “before the. Cross”? Maybe St. Paul gave us a short answer for this in the following text:

    Galatians 3:10-14 (NIV)

10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

“Fulfilling the Law” is to take the curse on, as a burden, to Death itself. Maybe this theological text carries a key to the fundamental mistake in trying to “return to good old days” – which is what “sharia” is doing. But, there is no return… Since the final “curse” also brought the Resurrection – By this, “religion” (in the sense people usually understand it) is already outdated, and in fact, of absolutely no use for salvation, progress for mankind, or anything… Believing in God means this “rejection of the Law as means for salvation”. Insisting on the law (sharia is included) is indeed showing its effects on society and life – before our eyes every day…

Every word on this person’s bio page is an outright lie! Anyone with a reasonable, or even basic, knowledge of islam, its literature, its history, and its values, can see through her taqqiya and the agenda of politically-correct islamist propaganda. Her whole academic life has been based on an outrageous lie, notwithstanding the alphabet soup she swims in.

Unfortunately most people can’t even begin to conceive that the concept of using taqqiya and kitman in defence of islam is mandatory for all muslims (ref: ahadith), To the naivete of our Western cultural paradigm such a thought is anathema

It’s time to start realising that all hands are not necessarily extended in friendship, but often to disarm (the origins of the handshake, actually).
