Father Josiah Trenham mentioned “intimidation” to the parishioners of St. Andrew Orthodox Church, and he was quite right: Islamic supremacists and jihadis routinely traffic in intimidation. That’s based on a Qur’anic command: “And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may strike terror in the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know, whom Allah knows” (Qur’an 8:60).
When they practice this intimidation, they generally find Westerners — especially Christian leaders — unwilling and unable to do anything in response but submit to it: the Christians are anxious to show themselves to be charitable and loving to the Muslims, without realizing that as far as the Muslims are concerned, this equates to surrender. Hence the many Christian leaders who counseled that in the face of the jihad murder of cartoonists of Muhammad, the charitable thing for Christians to do would be to accept the Sharia blasphemy restrictions on speech, at least regarding criticism of Muhammad.
This is not to say that Christians shouldn’t be charitable and loving, but sometimes the most charitable thing to do is to refuse to allow the intimidator a victory for his intimidation. Giving in to intimidation only encourages more of it. Christians in the U.S. need to have a public discussion of this point, since one thing is certain: there are going to be many, many more incidents like this one at St. Andrew Orthodox Church.
“Churches take new security measures in face of terror threats,” by Hollie McKay, Fox News, August 9, 2016:
As Father Josiah Trenham prepared to read the Gospel, several parishioners discreetly scooped up their babies, retreated up the aisles of St. Andrew Orthodox Church and out into the spring air, so as not to allow the crying of little ones to disturb the divine liturgy.
The time-honored tradition was shattered when a car passed by the Riverside, Calif., church, slowing down as the front passenger leaned out of his window and bellowed menacingly through a bullhorn, according to witnesses.
“Allahu Akbar!” the unidentified man repeated several times as the unnerved parents drew their infants close and exchanged worried glances.
Witnesses were able to give Riverside police a description of the green Honda Civic, but not of the three occupants. Some told police they believed one or more of the men may have been taking photographs, according to Officer Ryan Railsback. Although Trenham insisted multiple congregants heard the Arabic phrase, Railsback noted no mention of it was in the police report.
In omitting this, was the author of the police report running some politically correct interference for area Muslims?
Whatever the case, no law was broken – even if an unmistakable message was sent and received.
“Be calm and to keep a special vigilance over the property and our children while we are at church,” Trenham wrote in an email to parishioners in which he recounted the disturbing event. “Pray that these provocative young men might repent of their intimidation and be saved.”
Trenham told FoxNews.com last week the situation remains “tense and tenuous,” and said the church now has security officers on hand for all regular services.
“It is a deep sorrow to live this way in the ‘new America,’” he said.
The incident took place on April 12, some four months after a terror attack left 14 dead in nearby San Bernardino, and just over three months before a French priest was killed by ISIS-linked jihadists in his church. The events, whether far or near, underscore a grim new reality for pastors such as Trenham: Instead of offering sanctuary from evil, churches could in fact be attractive targets for terror….
In February, Khial Abu-Rayyan, 21, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., was arrested after he told an undercover FBI agent he was preparing to “shoot up” a major church near his home on behalf of ISIS. A month earlier, the Rev. Roger Spradlin of Valley Baptist Church – one of the biggest congregations in Bakersfield, Calif. – told attendees that they had received a threat written in Arabic.
“Undercover officers were then placed during worship services,” Valley Baptist spokesman Dave Kalahar said. “The FBI continues to investigate along with the local task force.”
Last September, an Islamic man clad in combat gear was charged with making a terrorist threat after entering Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, in Bullard, Tex., and claiming that God had instructed him to kill Christians and “other infidels.” A year earlier, police were called to Saint Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Columbus, Ind., after the house of worship was vandalized with the word “Infidels!” along with a Koranic verse sanctioning death for nonbelievers. Similar graffiti was found that same night at nearby Lakeview Church of Christ and East Columbus Christian Church.
St. Bartholomew Pastor Clem Davis said he doesn’t know if the threat was legitimate, but said little can be done to harden a target whose mission is to welcome all.
“I don’t know that there is any real protection against the ‘lone wolf’ mentality, not without infringing on everybody’s freedoms,” Davis said. “We don’t have metal detectors, people go in and out. Churches are family-orientated, public, tax-supported spaces; so they may appeal to some as a target.”
Synagogues have faced increasing threats in recent years, too. Earlier this year, the FBI disrupted a plot by a Muslim convert to blow up the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, in Aventura, Fla. A 2014 audit by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found that anti-Semitic incidents rose 21 percent across the country that year.
Eastern Orthodox Christians, who in many cases suffered persecution at the hands of radical Muslims in their Middle Eastern homelands, believe they may be singled out because of their heritage. Mass at St. Andrew typically attracts up to 400 worshippers with roots in Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Russia and Greece.
“We have guards now; we never used to have guards,” said St. Andrew attendee Solomon Saddi, a Syrian-American Christian. “They keep an eye on everyone and talk to the faces that aren’t familiar,” he continued, referring to the aftermath of the April incident. “It is a very dangerous time for us even in America.”…

Secularists are the bigger cancer. The Muslims would be a small job if we dealt with the Secularists.
Allan Mandrowski says
Secularists? I’m assuming you are a raving xtian?
I like my secular society, keeping church and state separate. So now I have to deal with jihadis and xtians like yourself? For f*ck’s sake.
William says
Really. How many times have Christians invaded your personal space or business and demanded you repent or die?
But Christians have to face both Muslims who scream Allah Akbar and loving secularists like you who claim they are more afraid of Christians than anything else.
But you keep passing those laws to shut us out of society because it makes you feel so good.
Cunamarra says
It sounds like you have an awfully condescending view of followers of an ideology that has had such an overwhelmingly positive effect on the populations and societies who have adopted it throughout history. Europeans have only recently rejected it within the span of a few generations. What has replaced Christianity in Europe has not done anything to protect that area from the evil that is Islam as Christianity once did for more than a millennium. Whatever the popular anti-Christian “ism” that infects Europe is it has actually been proactive in bringing Islam to, and cultivating its excesses on the continent.
You cannot possibly be equating dealing with Jihadis to dealing with Christians.
Augustine Thomas uses “secularist” in the same pejorative sense (and with good, demonstrable reason) that you use Christian. Have you ever tried re-examining your premise?
What teaching of Christianity do you find so loathsome as to compare it to the teachings of Islam?
Allan Mandrowski says
Cunamarra says
August 12, 2016 at 8:12 am
I’m not equating. But, I am a secularist and he wants to deal with me first. How should I respond to that? I loath jihadis, because they want to deal with anyone who aren’t like them and now I have to deal with Augustine Thomas, because he doesn’t like secularists (which I am, I am an atheist too).
Cunamarra says
If Augustine Thomas is a Christian I would imagine that “dealing” with secularists would mean discussing and attacking their ideas. You might discern what he means by “secularist,” as labels get thrown around in our culture without being defined. Separation of Church and State is a Judaeo Christian value.
The problem we are having with Islam is the result of our own bad ideas that are held like religious doctrine by atheists, secularists, and theologians alike because these bad ideas have permeated our culture. These bad ideas are numerous and exist independent of any influence from Islam.
Denial of reality and a hatred for the truth are some of those bad ideas. People who pride themselves on being “secular” and “atheist” are particularly guilty of this. Of course, one only has to listen a few minutes to Spencer’s conversation with Monsignor Swetland to recognize that the Judaeo Christian value of honesty has only so much sway with even devout adherents of Christianity. I’d have to get Augustine to respond but I’d like to think this is one of the things he had in mind when pointing the finger at “secularists.”
Billie Stan says
It always amazes me when secularist espouse how great it is to live in a secular world. Without Christian morals there would be no laws, there would be no justice, there would be no safe places for people to live. Whether secularist like it or not, it’s Christian values and laws that keep them safe. When the world becomes on big Sodom and Gomorrah, and people simply come into your home and take what and who they want, I’ll be anxious to hear how much you enjoy living in a secular country.
Allan Mandrowski says
Cunamarra says
August 12, 2016 at 10:58 am
You articulate your points nicely. Augustine did not. I cannot guess what he means or does not mean when he says “we need to deal with secularists first”. To me that is a hostile phrase thrown at a secularist like myself.
I agree that secularism is a Judeo-Christian value, it has also lead to the rise of agnostics and atheists a like, the next step in our evolution.
I do not need a god, nor a religion to tell me the difference between good and evil. I do good to those who do good to me, regardless of their skin color, creed or sexual orientation. Something pretty simple that many – practicing – christians, muslims and jews could learn something from.
I’m an atheist and a secularist and I am nothing like the ones you mention. I value freedom of speech over anything else. Islam is incompatible with Western societies. But, people like Augustine who want to deal with people like me first are incompatible as well with the freedom that I want to fight for.
Allan Mandrowski says

Christian values keeping us safe? It’s a fallacy that we need Christian or any religious doctrine telling us what is good and what is bad. The gross of xtians are hypocrites and many are outright bad at being a good person. Yes, there are bad non-religious people too, but there are many many very good non religious people. People who are inherently good.
Religion is the reason this world is messed up, that includes christianity. Back in the day when islam wasn’t a problem, christian denomination and affiliation was cause for rivalry, hate and war amongst themselves. Don’t give me your christian crap about how christianity is the reason we are safe.

I thought this was happening in Europe – no this is right here in California. BTW, these were the moderate Muslims who were intimidating Christians – just wait till they become radical! I think Muslims are preparing for an all out assault!!
The Bull says
Church needs to be able to block the road quickly with barriers and then have special ops church security to detain or neutralize assailants. If the assailants are immigrants then they need to be deported back to Somalia where they can join the pirates. Carolyne says
If Christians were to block the road, etc. they would be arrested. These Muslims could be arrested for “Disturbing the peace” but of course since they are Muslims, their behavior will be tolerated.

I live in Riverside. I grew up in San Bernardino. What we locals affectionately call “Berdoo”, and what I not so affectionately call the “armpit of the Inland Empire”.
The county was the focus of a huge corruption scandal about 15 years ago in which I and a few of my “gadfly” buddies played a small part.
I’ve been blocked on the Riverside’s city and police departments Fakebook pages after posting articles related to terrorism, their corruption and my opinions on the city’s connection to CAIR and its NON anti-terror efforts.
You can go and watch a SBdo city council meeting video which had “Security Measures” on its agenda and where I was the only one to actually utter the word “Islamic terrorism” during public comment.
Can’t wait to see if this church has a Fakebook page and what their reaction will be to my comments .
I’ve been blocked on the official Fakebook pages of the Catholic and Presbyterian Church after I posted JW articles on their “dialogue” and “interfaith” BS.
I’m also an ex-racist who was about as close to being a card carrying member of the KKK without actually being one. (even then we knew the Klan for the Klowns that they were). I just posted some comments on Black Voice News’ Fakebook page about (Only) Black Lives Matter, black “civil rights” groups hooking up with Muslims and the Islamic slave trade and the murder of millions of black Africans. ALL my comments were deleted/censored. It’s a shame. They could, honest to god, almost do a Hollywood TV movie on my struggle with racism. It depresses the heck out of me when I try to share my thoughts with black people.
I just finished up a Government Unions booklet by Matthew Vadum. After already reading another booklet Barack Obama’s Rules for Revolution and am halfway through the booklet Occupy Wall Street: The Communist Movement Reborn by David Horowitz and John Perazzo. On the front page I made a note: “One of the issues I ignored & wasn’t interested in but should’ve been”.
Like those I’ve preached to regarding seeing but never looking beyond the word “Islam” and other issues, I guess I’m guilty of being “too lazy and too stupid” to “actually study the issue. I saw these Occupy Wall Street freaks and simply dismissed them as a bunch of freaks. And left it at that, concentrating on my “jihad” and “Israel” issues.
Boy, what a wake up call.

Pastor Clem Davis says, “Churches are family-orientated, public, tax-supported spaces”. Tax supported? Really? The First amendment must not apply in California. I am a home owner in California, and there is no line item on my property tax bill for religious organizations. If this church is receiving tax money, then I want the details so I can notify my assemblyman and senator.
Lane says
Ed,
Thank you for bringing up that quote of Pastor Davis. I was wondering what planet he was living on when I read that. Churches are not “public, tax-supported spaces.” A church may choose to have its doors open 24/7 but it is not a “public” place. Sometimes people think that because churches have a tax-exempt status that means they are somehow “public.” Don’t think so.
Dennis says
Perhaps the people should adopt an “eye for an eye philosophy”. . If a church is bullhorned then go out and bullhorn a mosque. We are still allowed to protest. If the Muslims agitate then agitate back. I do not advocate killing. But I do advocate protest. Let the agitators know that it will not be so easy. Then they will respect you.
dumbledoresarmy says
Another possible course of action: rather than bullhorning the nearest mosque: **ring the church bells**.
LOUDLY. (Perhaps invest in some amplification technology to add even more oomph).
If this church has a ring of bells, then if the bloke with the bullhorn comes back, a team of people should go straight to the belltower and ring the bells, loud and long, and *keep* on ringing them. (A team of burly security guards – NON-MUSLIM – should also be detailed to be present at the gates and the doors; a few guard dogs, preferably black, would also be a good investment for the parish).
If they don’t already ring the daily Angelus they should do so; again, as loudly as city noise regs permit.
Muslims *hate* the sound of church bells. One of the Rules for Dhimmis is that the ringing of church bells is forbidden. So… *every* Islamosavvy clergyman everywhere in the lands of the Infidels – especially if there are mohammedans within earshot – needs to be unapologetic about ringing the church bells.
If Catholic or Anglican or Lutheran: ring the Angelus. Ring the bells before every service.
If the Muslims complain or threaten; ramp up security, inform the local government authorities, and keep right on ringing.
Hu says
I suspect the “tax supported” remark refers to churches not paying property tax on buildings or land used for worship.
linnte says
Dennis, this is exactly how I feel. The only thing Islam understands, and the only thing that will keep them pushed back, it show if strength and force. Agreed, no violence or killing, because that is what separates us from THEM. I do think at some point it will come down to fighting in the streets though. Glad my grandkids know how to shoot and handle many different types of weapons!
I think the eye for an eye is reasonable. Especially if the Muslims who perpetrated the bullhorn harassment had a return of the same nearly immediately after theirs. That would prevent Law enforcement from being biased toward Christians. The “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” standard. And if it incites Muslims to more? More the better, because I hope it comes to a head sooner rather than later, when Muslim populations are bigger!
Islam needs to be kept at bay, and in it’s place- preferably out of our Country!
Chris Cross says
The most charitable thing a Christian or anyone can do is put a bullet in the head of a rabid dog or fatally injured horse. Islam has that affect on some of its followers. The most humane thing to do is to put them out of their mental stupor before they harm any innocents. Burma ended decades of Islamic fundamentalism (terrorism to us Westerner cultural relativists that think all religions are similar) by using flame throwers. At what point do”allah akbar” become “Fighting Words” that are so offensive and THREATENING that a violent response is legally justified as self-defense.
I think we have now reached that point. If I hear someone yell those words in a public place I feel my life is in danger. I believe all americans have the fight to protect themselves against attack and those words are proven as coming just before attacks. That bullhorn drive-by was equivalent to a direct threat to shoot people. Would it for me legal to drive by a mosque and yell “I am going to shoot and kill you now for my religion! (???)
How can we confirm this as a valid legal doctrine? The reality of the situation is true – it is only for the authorities toby forced to legally recognize the direct threat.

To bleeps: No, priests should not arm themselves. Laymen should arm themselves, and priests should bless their arms. The tension between the need for Christians to defend themselves and the call to follow Christ’s example of not resisting evil is expressed in Orthodox Christian tradition in subtle ways — bishops, priests and deacons are called on to never bear arms, and there is a canonical penance for killing in war, much milder than the canonical penance for murder, but still there, while at the same time there are prayers in the old Trebnik for the blessing of weapons. We honor as saints The Passion-Bearers Boris and Gleb, who died at the hand of the henchmen of their brother Svyatoslav the Accursed, rather fight for the throne of Kiev, but also St. Aleksandr Nevsky and the Tsar-Martyr Lazar of Serbia, in both of whose lives warfare in defense of Orthodox Christendom figures in the case for their sanctity.
To Sid Debgupta: No, believable and right. The Holy Fathers always counseled flight from martyrdom, if possible, lest at the last moment one’s faith fail and one not win the crown.

We must take the action taken in the book of Esther; arm the potential victims and make sure they know how, and are willing, to fight back. The enemy will then keep their distance. The next step would be to follow the example of late medieval Spain and drive them out of your country. Nether of these actions are discouraged in the New Testament. We can still pray for the muslims while defending ourselves against them. Train well and pray often.
