Egyptian Christian teens sentenced for “defaming Islam” flee to Switzerland

Sep 4, 2016 7:12 pm By Robert Spencer

What will they do when Switzerland becomes another Egypt? Where will they flee then? As the free world commits suicide, where will free people go?

Moller-Yasa-Klenton-Faragalla-Bassem-Younan-and-Albir-Shehata

“Coptic Teenagers Sentenced in Egypt for ‘Defaming Islam’ in Video Flee to Switzerland,” Morning Star News, September 3, 2016:

Sentenced to prison in Egypt for allegedly insulting Islam in a video, four Coptic teenagers who had taken refuge in Turkey for months on Thursday (Sept. 1) flew to Switzerland to seek asylum.

In exclusive interviews with Morning Star News, the boys said they made their video before the release of the Islamic State (IS) mass execution video they were said to be mocking, and that at the time they had never even heard of the group.

Sentenced to five years in prison, the boys fled Egypt in April and, with the backing of Christian and human rights organizations, lived in secret for five months in a safe house in Istanbul. Two weeks ago, each was granted a humanitarian visa “under special circumstances” to Switzerland, where they will seek asylum.

Albir Shehata, 17, told Morning Star News that the ordeal was unfair and has been crushing, but that the opportunity to start again in Switzerland gives him new hope.

“In Egypt, no one gets punished for blasphemy against Christians,” Shehata said. “There was no reason to be treated that way for something that silly. It was all a joke with the teacher. But now it’s a great feeling, because I feel like I have an opportunity for a better life than what I had in Egypt, because in Egypt my future is ruined. In Switzerland I have an opportunity to make up for it.”

A judge on Feb. 25 sentenced Shehata, Klenton Faragalla, 18, Moller Yasa, 17, and Bassem Younan, 17, all of Al-Nasriyah village in Upper Egypt, to five years in prison for violating Article 98F, Defaming a Revealed (or Heavenly) Religion, in a mobile phone video.

In the 32-second video, Shehata appears for a few seconds kneeling and performing the Salat, the prayer performed five times daily by observant Muslims. Right before the video stops, Younan holds his hand as if it were a knife and draws it across Shehata’s throat. The other two boys shown on camera only wave to the person recording the video and to the other boys.

The boys’ teacher, 43-year-old Gad Younan (no relation to Bassem Younan), recorded the video with his mobile phone on Feb. 14, 2015 at a youth retreat for Copts. Gad Younan was recording everyone in the room, not just the boys, and Shehata and Bassem Younan said neither of them intended to mock Islam in any way; they were merely trying to get the teacher’s attention in a dorm room crowded with Christians by making silly gestures.

Gad Younan later misplaced his phone, and on April 6, 2015, a Muslim in their village found it and played the video.

Word of the video spread rapidly throughout Al-Nasriyah. By the next day, a group of Muslims complained to the police, and on April 8 a mob of enraged Muslims began tearing through the village, beating any Copt they could find.

For three days the rioting raged as thousands of Muslims from adjacent villages came to Al-Nasriyah to join the looting. At least 15 stores were damaged or destroyed. Mobs roamed through Al-Nasriyah chanting Islamic slogans and demanded all Christians be pushed out of the village.

During the rioting, the four boys were terrified for their lives. On more than one occasion mobs surrounded their homes chanting for their deaths. Shehata said that while he was trapped in his home, hiding, he could hear people outside arguing over who had the right to kill him.

“People were arguing over who would get the blessing and honor of killing me, or if they should all join in and have part of the blessing,” he said.

Even after the rioting ended, mobs occasionally formed and marched through the streets, threatening Copts.

The teacher was arrested on April 7, 2015 at his home, one day after the phone was found, and on April 9 the boys were able to get to the village mayor’s house during a lull in the rioting. A detail of soldiers took them to police after telling them they would spend just a few hours at the station to be admonished by authorities and then released, the boys said. Instead, the minors were severely interrogated, beaten and then put in jail.

Conditions in jail were harsh. In addition to being given little other than rotten, boiled eggs and bread to eat, Faragalla said prison guards offered rewards to inmates to beat them, and they did so regularly. The guards and inmates also tried to force them to convert to Islam.

“When I was put in the cell on the first day, the guard told them, ‘These boys dare to insult Islam – show them how we treat people who insult our holy religion,’’ Faragalla said.

As harsh as the treatment was, at times a handful of inmates protected the boys from violence and made sure they had more food.

“God really took care of us,” Shehata said.

After hearings for the trial started, the boys eventually were released on a security bond of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (US$1,125) each. In all Shehata, Yasa, and Younan spent a little more than 50 days in jail. Faragalla spent 63.

“We went into a jail for adult prisoners, but we were still children,” Faragalla said. “But we saw people doing hashish and all other sorts of drugs.”…

What crap–this comes from the Morning Star News article itself–this is nothing Spencer himself has added:

“Word of the video spread rapidly throughout Al-Nasriyah. By the next day, a group of Muslims complained to the police, and on April 8 a mob of enraged Muslims began tearing through the village, beating any Copt they could find.

And the idea that this savagery is for Robert Spencer’s “benefit” is grotesque calumny.

Notice, also, that “Sam” appears to have no problem with these peaceful teens being imprisoned for having criticized Islam. *Sickening*.

    Muslim Logic
Muslims were upset that Islam was portrayed as — violent.

    Therefore:
“On more than one occasion mobs surrounded their homes chanting for their deaths.”

Exactly, Jay Boo–these boys dared depict Islam as violent, so Muslims responded by rioting, destroying shops, and beating the boys in prison.

But Islam has never cared about “irony”–just about Muslim supremacy.

I can tell this Muslim migration is weighing heavy on him and his family. They have seen things that most of us have only read about. It just breaks my heart thinking about the Christians, Jews, non-Muslims who fled Islamic persecution only to be faced with it again. We need to listen to these men and women who have first hand experience with that culture. The brutality and rape and violence is sickening.

To Michael Laudahn- I am so thankful these 4 young men want to go to Switzerland, and I will pray that Switzerland grants them permanent asylum. I am addressing my comment to you since you seem to have information I didn’t read. But I did read several facts about Swiss lawmakers taking a hardline on Islamists: anyone in a Swiss high school that won’t shake the teacher’s hand, or swim in the co-ed pool for physical education class will be denied Swiss citizenship. The Swiss government wants all “refugees” to assimilate into Swiss society and culture and they seem to not want to make any exceptions. Isn’t that a good thing? Isn’t it great that Switzerland does not seem to want to be politically correct, like Great Britain and other European countries? Would like to know your thoughts. Thank you.

          Sep 5, 2016 at 2:55 am

You’ve cherry-picked the things that fit your ‘swiss world view’, Linde Barrera. If you spoke german and lived in Swtzerland, you would know more of the whole scenario. And let me assure you, it doesn’t look good at all. – You’re welcome.

        • Alien Republican says

          Sep 5, 2016 at 6:27 am

Well Linde, you have been “subtly” reminded that you lack the experience and the language skills to understand whatever aspects of “Swiss” culture you are “cherry picking”. Good to know that Swiss are very much like Italians, French ord Germans, pretty much as “Americans” includes Mexicans and Canadians as well.

The stance towards Islamists in Switzerland is pretty much unapologetic. Just to give a few examples: The article meant to fight “hate speech” has been invoqued in one case against an Iman in Basel who recited from the Koran. No further consequences for lack of evidence but the precedence was set unlike in many other european countries that “hate speech” will bring muslims in trouble as well. Regarding muslims Switzerland had been lucky insofar that many are from Albania and Turkey and the generation from Turkey still very much influenced by “Atatürk” (secular). Furthermore many among turkish muslim being “Alevi”, usually Kurds with a way more relaxed attitude as far as religion is concerned.

The “self proclaimed” direct democracy has implement a constitutional ban of Minarets after a vote called for by the people of Switzerland. Enforcing is another matter, which is a weak point in the system.

Representetives from the SOCIALST party, Sommaruge (handshake), Fehr (banning burkas) have taken a clear stance in these matters but against opposition in their own party. Anyway, the message is out – not even “socialists” will take any BS from muslims.

Citizenship is not a right aquired by living in Switzerland. Usually the decision is by vote on a communal level but the left is busy undermining that procedure. Granted, there were many “unfair and dubious cases in the past. However, there has been a good reason for “cherry picking” new citizens: The municipality (“Gemeinde”) traditionally also pays a large part of welfare for those in needs and you want to keep the number low as it will immediately effect your taxes in smaller municipalities.

There is a lot that could be said but some frustrated second class expat won’t bother to tell you.

      • epistemology says

        Sep 5, 2016 at 7:47 am

I disagree. The minaret ban is a fact the Swiss people came out on top, they won against the Swiss elites who as nearly everywhere in Western Europe fear the loss of business with the oil rich muzzie countries.

Oskar Freysinger is a respected politician in Switzerland, btw on French Swiss he refuted the fly-by-night muzzie Tarik Ramadan, he scored all points although the stupid anchor woman was more on sleazy Ramadan’s side. The Swiss people have realised that Ramadan always lies when he speaks French or English.

What Linde Barrera said would be impossible in Britain or Germany (the worst country of all), the Swiss have an old democratic tradition, they know how to fight for their freedom.

        • Michael Laudahn says

          Sep 5, 2016 at 8:04 am

Did you know that SVP grandee Christoph Blocher prohibited discussing islam in his SVP party? He probably feared that his chemical company (Ems-Chemie) would loose access to oil.

Oskar Freysinger is clearly going the way of all ‘successful’ politicians: He is getting out of touch with reality. I doubt if he still can be considered a reliable ally of the people.

And regarding the alleged swiss freedom-fighting knowhow: Sorry again, my experience shows the swiss are rather craven people with a big mouth. The Wilhelm Tell myth (you know, the crossbow and first apple, then bailiff shooter) serves to cover this fact. Nowadays, they let themselves terrorise into silence by their own bailiffs, rather than by those sent by the Habsburg dynasty.

In reply to Micheal, despite his smart advice of DFTT:

Quote: “Did you know that SVP grandee Christoph Blocher prohibited discussing islam in his SVP party?”

I suppose not knowing the details of the current politics in a small country will make he commenter look ignorant ? It’s interesting to see that many in the Swiss left have no other “programme” that just opposing a former Federal Chancellor, which makes them the opposite of autonomous “thinkers”.

Whatever this former “Grandee” may ask for, I don’t see his party members following the alleged “prohibition of discussing” Islam. On the countrary, “Weltwoche” Editor Roger Köpper and member of the Swiss National Council has adressed the topic many times in the “Weltwoche”.

Quote: “He probably feared that his chemical company (Ems-Chemie) would loose access to oil.”

Probably ? Do you really think that he will walk to “oil taps” in Saudi-Arabia or Iran instead of buying raw materials on the european market ? Keep on guessing. It’s not that instructive but amusinng.

Quote: “Oskar Freysinger is clearly going the way of all ‘successful’ politicians: He is getting out of touch with reality. I doubt if he still can be considered a reliable ally of the people.”

You are just describing the ailement of the current establishment. What exacty makes Freysinger “out of touch with reality” ?

Quote: “bla bla Tell, bla bla”

You can be quite amusing, ‘Alien Republican’, however not in the sense intended by yourself, probably.

First, why do you respond on behalf of ‘epistemology’?

Second, my Blocher quote is based on reliable insider information (member of the federal parliament). It is, however, several years old and may therefore today be past its ‘best-before’ date. Still it may serve to indicate the spirit in the ‘free’ ‘direct democracy’ of Switzerland.

Third re Freysinger, you’re right insofar as I express my general feeling. My experience is that I usually can trust it. I haven’t heard from him for a long time, except that he has held a public, political office for several years. That doesn’t sound exactly confidence inspiring. .)

And why you brush my years-long hands-on experience with the swiss and their ‘authorities’ aside as’blabla’ must remain your mystery. You don’t like to hear the truth like most people, do you? It is not blabla. Cravenness, not couage, is the typical swiss attitude. Courage is reserved for myth man Tell only.

Finally, I hope RS will publish my detailed reply to your earlier message, which contained several links – to my knowledge, these need to be examined before.

Why did I not reply directly to M.L. ?

Maybe for lack of a reply link to your comment. You may have overlooked that replies are not nested endlessly….

“Second, my Blocher quote is based on reliable insider information (member of the federal parliament). It is, however, several years old and may therefore today be past its ‘best-before’ date. Still it may serve to indicate the spirit in the ‘free’ ‘direct democracy’ of Switzerland.”

Read again what you write. ONE single Person, of a party representing approx. 25% is mustered as “proof” that the democratic “spirit” is lacking ?

Well guess what, there are a lot of undemoratic institutions that work perfectly well WITHIN a democracy. Science for instance is not democratic as you don’t establish truths by vote but by facts (OK, there is alway a kind of informal agreement among pundits, still alway open to questioning). Any kind of business is not demcratic as well. You may be consulted out or respect for your expertise, personality or simply out of tactics to overcome resistance but in the end you just follow what management decides. Furthermore many fail to understand that despite parties and people calling themselves “democrats”, a democracy is a system how decisions are made or delegated. It’s not a specific world view, on the contrary.

Very sad that El Sisi cannot control Egypt. I lived there under Mubarak and really loved it. Mubarak was a strong man and could control the Muslims. That is what the Arabs respect. I used to attend the Thursday night Sufi gatherings at the ________Mosque. Don’t want to mention the place. The Pir ( spiritual leader). Told me that the Sunnis and Shia practiced DARK Islam and that they mixed politics and religion. The Sufis of Egypt are being persecuted by the Muslims just like the Coptic Christians. Good luck to those boys!

There was bloody persecution of Christians under Mubarak, as well–it just was not apt to be as bad as under the Muslim Brotherhood. It is much the same under Al Sisi–steadily ugly and violent, but somewhat short of a full-on genocide.

Islam is political to its core–there is *no* separation of mosque and state in Islam. Orthodox Islam *is* dark–but this is, and always has been, mainstream Islam.

As for the Sufis, despite their being frequently oppressed by their more orthodox coreligionists, you are mistaken in your apparent belief that they reject Jihad:

“In Egypt, no one gets punished for blasphemy against Christians,” Shehata said.

Indeed, Sharia law supersedes the Egyptian constitution in the minds of ALL Muslims, so therefore, blasphemers are ALWAYS killed.

The blasphemy punishment in Sharia law is DEATH for the blasphemer. ANYONE at all has permission to carry out the execution of the blasphemer without consequences…even a kafir may murder a Muslim blasphemer, because the Muslim has in theory become a kafir by blaspheming.

Sharia permits the murder of anyone who verbally opposes Islam, since they are at war with Islam:

“There is no indemnity obligatory for killing a non-Muslim (harbi) at war with Muslims.” -Reliance of the Traveller, o4.17, p.593

    Another Sharia manual states:
“We have already discussed killing the person who, with intent, curses the Prophet, belittles him or slights him in any way. The judgement in this case is CLEAR.” (i.e. the sentence is execution)- from Sharia law manual, “Qadhi Iyaadh in ash-Shifa”, Volume No.2, Page No. 27

The scriptural defense of the above is the following:
    – K.33.57 “Cursed they will be. Wherever they are found, they are SEIZED and SLAIN.”

    – A’li ibn Abi Talib reported that Nabi (saw) said “Whoever curses a prophet KILL him. Whoever curses my companions beat him.” (TABARAANI, DARAQUTNI)

Proohibited ‘Impermissible’ Speech from Reliance of the Traveller:
    Chapter ‘O’ 11.10
The (DHIMMI) agreement is also violated (A: with respect to the offender alone) if the state has stipulated that any of the following things break it, and one of the subjects does so anyway, though if the state has not stipulated that these break the agreement, then they do not; namely, if one of the subject people:
-5- or mentions something impermissible about Allah, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), or Islam.

Your “beloved Prophet Mohammed” (piss be upon him) was a mass murderer, plunderer, deceiver, thief, rapist, assassin, misogynist and paedophile – all according to your own Islamic literature. Even a cursory examination of that literature reveals to the intelligent reader that he was a narcissistic psychopath who invented a cult for his own enrichment and self-aggrandisement.

Mohammed was the depraved founder of the barbarian cult that became the cancer of the world.

To Suleiman Haq- As per your comment of Sep. 5, 2016 @1:50 am, I must straighten you out on a few points. First, Islam is an evil ideology. Any so-called “religion” that advises its believers and adherents to “kill, rape and take slaves and sex slaves” of individuals that do not believe or adhere to that religion is evil. Islam lacks the Golden Rule. Other religions have the Golden Rule. To refresh your memory, “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Secondly, the so-called prophet of Islam, Muhammad, was a very evil man. He did many acts of violence and cruelty to many innocent people. Why shouldn’t he be insulted? God alone is good. Third, I do not hate any Muslims because they are persons, and I am a person. But I do hate the evil ideology of Islam and so should everyone. I was in a large supermarket 2 weeks ago in my ‘hood where there are many Muslims. I was talking to a lady on line behind me and we were discussing the Islamist martial arts champion who refused to shake hands with his Israeli counterpart at the Olympics in Rio. I said to the lady “I do not hate Muslims but I do hate Islam.” Then the young lady cashier butted in and said to me “I am a Muslim and I hate Islam.” And she was not joking nor being sarcastic. So I said to her, “Be well my dear, and take care of yourself.” Finally, what do you value in life, Suleiman Haq? Are you a robot for Islam? Just remember you don’t know what you don’t know. That applies to all of us. The limited human Muslim mind cannot put limits on Almighty God, who is all knowing, all powerful and all merciful to all his creatures, not just some. And that means He can be born of a virgin and die on a cross to save us from our sin and disobedience. But He is only obligated to bless those who obey Him. I will pray for you.

I am going to copy it and keep it as proof that Islam is an evil ideology. Ali Sina wrote so many truthful realities in that response. Thank you again, carol, I really appreciate your activism about this. On a different note but related, I have been in contact with a man, “S”, in Thailand who says he is a Pakistani Christian and he fled Pakistan due to Islamist persecution. “S” must have found my name on Facebook, as I dont know this man. He sends me instant messages, and says Canada has a program of church sponsorship for people like him. He went to the UNHCR in Bangkok and they said they can’t help him! I believe that, because the UN has become a voice for Islam. In my opinion, the UN does not care about Christians or Jews. He said the gov’t of Thailand does not want these more than 11,000 Pakistani Christians to become citizens of Thailand. He asked me to help him and I contacted the Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, John McCallum. I am awaiting response from John McCallum. Regardless of your belief, would you say a prayer or have a positive thought for people like “S”? Thank you and God bless you, carol.

Are Christian men as privileged as Muslim men compared to women in Muslim Majority Countries?
Seems as if the women have more reason to leave. Still just men, or mostly, are escaping or being allowed to leave. It looks to me as if it is organized according to the will of their authorities instead of real escape.

It’s mostly just muslim men. Barely any Middle-east Christian men in Europe. Also, these Coptic Christian kids are teenagers who are currently sentenced to five years in prison for defaming Islam. All they did was like a Facebook post. Copts have been an North America and Europe for decades and have not caused any issues. They are not muslim. In fact, Copts are a very productive group, in Egypt and the USA. Low crime rate too.

“On this measure the most elite group in the USA, far eclipsing the Ashkenazi Jewish population, are Copts and Hindu Indians, with sixteen times as many doctors per capita in the USA than the average of the domestic population.”

      http://www.iga.ucdavis.edu/Research/All-UC/conferences/huntington-2013/clark-paper

Also, in Egypt, Copts are 10% of the population and have yielded 30-40% of the doctors there.

To Michael Laudahn and Alien Republican- Hello. I read and re-read your comments. And I’m glad you posted links. I do not know who is a “troll” here and who is not, unless they are obvious about it like “sham” or “shabeer” or “Rezali Mehil”. And that last one, Rezali Mehil, calls me and “Champ” wait for it–“phoney Christians”. Why? Because both Champ and I believe every individual has the right to defend himself or herself if attacked unprovoked. We also both are intolerant of jihad and believe and speak up for freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly and freedom of religion. But we speak out against any religion that says it is ok to kill innocent people if they do not believe what you believe. Islam is that religion, and there is none other that I know of, correct me if I am wrong. I personally believe the journalists and reporters should be successfully sued (just like doctors get sued for malpractice and negligence) when those journalists and reporters are not doing their jobs, and that is to tell the truth, report the facts and not give their opinions. That is why I trust and love Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller. They both deserve the journalistic equivalent of The Purple Heart medal for reporting the truth. What do you think of this?

    • Alien Republican says

      Sep 5, 2016 at 3:21 pm

      Linde,

Concerning “doing their jobs, and that is to tell the truth, report the facts and not give their opinions. ”

I wish you could have witnessed first hand the reactions of the german press when “Pegida” started with their peaceful marches about 18 months ago. It doesn’t really matter what your position towards “Pegida” is but the reason I’m mentioning that movement is that around the same time some pretty accurate terms for the media have come up, namely “Lügenpresse” (“lying media” which I would paraphrase as “daily lies”) and “Lückenpresse” (literally referring to reports full of “gaps”, “half-truth”).

Now, the really interesting part is how offended the media itself reacted to that derogatory terms and how they proved time and again what liers they were. The people of Pegida marching outright denied the “journalists” interviews, turning immediately their back on them often calling them “Lügenpresse”.

I would never have thought the dilema and diserved offence that would cause to journalist. While alway s reporting unfavourably about the movement in the worst of terms (violent hooligans, racists, danger to democracy, nazis, populist, right-winger and all that disgusting diatribe) they were complaining about being snubbed.

In one case one “journalist” faked to be part of Pegida to give a fake interview. Fortunately he was recognized. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5rEmB_KLFU

In all these months I could see time and again that little has remained of the ideals of journalism. Now at least I understand how people must have felt in the communist regimes.

Not only does the media reporting very very selectively, but unlike in the US media where at least the comment sections are open, here in many cases commenting is disables if topic are considered “problematic”. Not only islam but also articles that invite criticism concerning Merkel and that effects even some of the Swiss online-media.

I agree that independent bloggers such as JihadWatch have become for more reliable sources of information, while the traditional media seems hellbent on the opposite.
