Obama Admin issues veto threat of Guantanamo bill

Sep 14, 2016 2:00 pm By Christine Douglass-Williams

The White House reiterated that the “continued operation of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay weakens our national security by draining resources, damaging our relationships with key allies and partners, and emboldening violent extremists.”

A president who has been doing back room deals with Iran to the tune of tens of billions is talking about national security and key allies.

The statement to veto the Gitmo bill included a warning that “banning transfers could infringe on the president’s powers.”

Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski, who introduced the bill “until new safeguards are in place” said the administration…

… “is so intent on fulfilling a campaign promise to close Gitmo that it’s released more than three dozen detainees this year and cleared another 20 for transfer.”

Obama argues …

… “detainees are transferred from Guantanamo Bay only after a rigorous interagency review process assesses, based on all relevant facts and circumstances.”

What system of evaluation has the Obama administration – and even the West at large – demonstrated to gain a shred of public confidence? The public would be in most danger from terrorist plots, potentially as catastrophic as 9-11 (and worse) given that the Guantanamo detainees are the ‘worst of the worst’ , steeped in jihadi warfare strategy and determined to execute that strategy. And let’s not even think about the potentially deadly alliance between Islamic State mujahideen and these believed-to-be reformed Guantanamo detainees, the latter of which would be deemed heroes by the IS; while the IS young jihadists would elicit the excited frenzy seen when blood is fed to a shark.

Last year, a former Taliban commander who was at Gitmo for years, not only resumed activities with the Taliban but defected to ISIS prior to being killed on Monday.

A Freedom of Information request in 2013 forced the release of the names of some 44 detainees and the stunning revalation that the Obama administration admitted that they were “too dangerous to release”  but also too tough to prosecute or put on trial.

gitmo-releases

“White House issues veto threat over Gitmo bill”, by Dave Boyer, Washington Times, September 13, 2016:

The White House issued a veto threat Tuesday over a House bill that would prohibit the use of federal funds to transfer any terrorism detainees from the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba to the mainland U.S. or another country.

The administration said in a veto message that the House bill would “seek to foreclose entirely the executive branch’s ability to determine appropriate disposition options for detainees, including to transfer them consistent with our national security and our humane treatment policy.”

The administration has been transferring dozens of detainees to other nations willing to accept them. President Obama has said he wants to move some of the remaining detainees to prisons on the mainland, pointing out that the U.S. already has imprisoned some terrorists in such facilities without incident.

Lawmakers in both parties oppose the transfer of Gitmo detainees to the U.S., saying it could invite terrorist attacks in the communities where they are jailed.

There are currently 61 detainees at Gitmo, many of whom have been approved for transfer to other nations.

The White House reiterated that the “continued operation of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay weakens our national security by draining resources, damaging our relationships with key allies and partners, and emboldening violent extremists.”

The administration submitted a plan in February to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. It said the legislation to be voted on this week “represents an effort not only to extend the facility’s operation — as have the other unwarranted legislative restrictions on transfers — but to bring to a standstill the substantial progress the administration has made in safely and securely reducing the facility’s population.”

Rep. Jackie Walorski, Indiana Republican, said the administration “is so intent on fulfilling a campaign promise to close Gitmo that it’s released more than three dozen detainees this year and cleared another 20 for transfer.”…

Obama’s plan is clearly to release all remaining detainees to frenemy countries after the election. Most won’t be incarcerated for long in those countries and many will return to to jihad. He will most likely also cease payment on the Guantanamo lease and hand it back to Cuba to make sure it stays closed — especially if Trump wins.

The sticking point will be KSM, but Obama will have no qualms about ignoring the law and moving him to a US prison, or even turning him over to a frenemy country.

A simple solution would be to just shoot them. A bullet cost nothing and a guided missile is expensive so if you are going to have to kill them after release why not just shorten the process?

The White House reiterated that the “continued operation of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay weakens our national security by draining resources, damaging our relationships with key allies and partners, and emboldening violent extremists.”

OK, let’s go by parts. And keep in mind through all of this that we’re not talking about teens who decided to smoke pot on the wring place at the wrong time – we’re talking about hardened criminals who have waged war against the US and/or its allies

“the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay weakens our national security by draining resources”

What amount of resources are required to run Gitmo? What amount of resources is being spent on welfare and benefits to “Syrian” “refugees”? Going by that logic, the “refugee” resettlement programs must also be weakening your national security. How about food stamps? Or any other state expenditure? You know what would be really terrible for your national security? Letting unrepentant criminals who waged war against your country go scot-free to keep waging war and pass on their knowledge and ideology to God knows how many people. How much will it cost to keep tabs on them after being let go? How much will it cost to look for them when they inevitably disappear to wage jihad?

“damaging our relationships with key allies and partners”

If your “key partners” and “key allies” have a problem with you jailing criminals then maybe you need better allies and partners. Because those are neither your allies nor your partners.

    “and emboldening violent extremists”

You know what emboldens this particular brand of “violent extremists”? Showing signs of weakness. You know, like letting them go.

What will the Obama administration (or former members of it) say when a former Gitmo detainee that they let go ends up killing American (or British, French, German, etc.) citizens and destroying American (or British, French, German, etc.) property? “At least we didn’t damage our relationship with Turkey, Iran, Pakistan or Yemen, whom we value as key allies and partners in the fight against violent extremism. Plus, we cut on state spending – more left for Obamacare”. No, probably something more along the lines of “We may never know what drove these people to return to wage war against the US but it’s Trump’s fault. It’s the Republican’s fault. It’s the guns’ fault. It’s the fault of all those people who think freedom of speech means they can say whatever they want”.

Why would imprisoning terrorists, who according to the O are not Muslims, anger Muslims?

I know a good way to close Gitmo before Obama leaves office. How about execute the remaining detainees? Then we can safely close Gitmo without being under renewed threat from these hardened enemies of the U.S. Win-win.

“A president who has been doing back room deals with Iran to the tune of tens of billions is talking about national security and key allies.”

Obama’s list of key allies is not the same as our list. Obama is working to protect those that *he* considers to be key allies. Also when it comes to national security, the article does not say US National Security. It says “our national security”. The antecedent is not defined.

My guess is that he is concerned about Cuba and Iran as key allies and is concerned about national ( (Iran + Cuba + Obama) = our ) security. He is most certainly not concerned about Isreal, UK, France, Germany, United States ETC in any of this.

This promise – read “threat” – to veto the bill, like the promise “to close Gitmo” is only one of countless anti-American acts this president has perpetrated on the country during his reign. It should come as no surprise. Obama has been releasing these and other criminals throughout his term. And one of his first acts as president was to announce that he’d close Gitmo if it was the last thing he did. He’ll do his best to accomplish this, believe me!

This is a man who loves nothing better than releasing criminals onto the streets from Federal prison, unless it’s releasing jihidis into our cities and streets to do their mischief. Check his record, Possums!

Guantanamo is more than just this storage facility for evil, dangerous terrorists. It is also a strategically important US military base. I don’t know whether Obama wants to close only the prison, or ALL the operations on that island.

My guess is he wants to close the whole base down, abandon the entire island, and give it to his dear friends, the atrocious Castro brothers.

Only less than 60 days til we see the backside of this atrocity. Hope everyone manages to get Trump elected; it it’s Hillary, we are in for more of the same, only worse, and you can cross the USA off your list of sovereign nations.

    Cheers!

“We have George Bush to thank for the catch-and-release program.”

Accelerated exponentially by Obama——–and had Obama been in charge as of 2001 instead of 2009 I hope you realize that there would have been no Islamic barbarians at Gitmo in the first place.

Think priorities here and thus properly assess the lesser wrong in contrast to the much greater wrong. Or is it still all Bush’s fault?

Stop referring to Obama as ‘The President’ He is a disgrace. perhaps, ‘The Resident’ [of the White House] is more apt.

Obama is one son of a bitch who is hell-bent on destroying America one way or another. He just hates western civilization. But unfortunately, America voted for him not once, but twice and he is still popular. What the hell!!!

    • Carolyne says

      Sep 15, 2016 at 3:37 pm

I’m not sure America elected him twice because I believe the second time was a fraud.

There are a number of things which infuriate me about Guantanamo, one of which occurred when George Bush was President. The Muslims incarcerated there insisted that our American military were dirty and not worthy of touching the Koran, so our personnel wear white cotton gloves when touching that monstrous book of evil. Also, our military does not allow females to have any contact with the prisoners because they (The prisoners) consider females unclean. So our government agreed with that.

These men are prisoners. They are not guests of honor. It shouldn’t matter what they want, especially at the expense of the worth of our military.
