Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

White House press secretary on the Islamic State: “This is actually just a war of narratives”

Sep 19, 2016 12:17 pm By Robert Spencer

“In some ways, this is actually just a war of narratives.”

No, it isn’t. A bomb just went off in New York City. That isn’t a war of narratives. That is a hot war, but only one side is fighting.

“We want to get out our counter-narrative against ISIL. And we’re having some progress, we’re making some progress.”

No, you aren’t. You won’t even admit what the motivating ideology of “ISIL” is. You don’t even dare to call it by the name it calls itself. You refuse to admit, much less examine, the sources of its appeal. You’re not making any progress at all. In fact, you don’t even have a “counter-narrative against ISIL.”

josh-earnest

“WH Press Secretary on War on ISIS: ‘This Is Actually Just a War of Narratives,’” by Alex Griswold, Mediaite, September 19, 2016:

When asked what steps Homeland Security was taking to address the threat of lone wolf and ISIS-inspired attacks in the West in the wake of the weekend’s terror attack, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told the hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday that it was really all just a “war of narratives.”…

“The other thing that we can do is work to try to lift up the voices of prominent patriotic Muslims in the United States. There are millions of them!” he continued. “They can speak to the poisonous, empty bankrupt mythology that’s being propagated by ISIL.”

“In some ways, this is actually just a war of narratives,” he concluded. “We want to get out our counter-narrative against ISIL. And we’re having some progress, we’re making some progress.”

That’s what concerned Earnest about Donald Trump’s rhetoric, he said. “We can’t give them the narrative victory of suggesting that every Muslim is responsible for this kind of terrorism. We can’t give into this narrative that ISIL wants to build up that the United States is at war with Islam. That is false and not true.”

    A Crocodile Fantasy

From deep within the delirious world of the open-minded crocodile apologists…….

Today we mourn for the victims and families of yet another in the series of senseless acts of violence perpetrated by an apparent ‘lone wolf’ crocodile.

But, just because one vicious crocodile attacks and kills unwary victims, should we condemn all crocodiles as heartless and evil? Doesn’t that seem unjust and unfair? The other crocodile communities of the world had no concept of what the renegade had planned to do. Obviously it must have been a mentally unstable croc to have done such a horrific deed, yes? Crocodiles worldwide would be justifiably insulted that public outrage had been directed at them, accused as a malevolent force showing no remorse towards the victims and families involved.

Indeed, if we continue to call attention to the relentless attacks these crocs continue to mount against the victims, it could surely result in increased violence as the aggrieved crocs show their solidarity. We mustn’t be so judgmental of the vast majority of peaceful crocodiles who wish to live side-by-side with the rest of the world. They have never, by themselves, committed such dreadful acts and they are, after all, as horrified as the survivors, roundly condemning the attacks (sometimes). And aren’t other crocodiles themselves often victims of the violence inflicted upon their own kind?

So let us all just coexist happily together in the swamp of peace and warmly embrace another clutch of crocs into our midst. Because we all know it would be the height of bigotry to lump all crocodiles together (even though they share the same DNA). In fact, it would be downright Crocophobic!

And we all lived happily ever after.

Insisting that this is a war of narratives is bizarre. Were those bombs just ideas? If Josh Earnest is actually a human being and not a realistic-looking avatar, then I don’t know how he can say this without laughing or throwing up…

If Earnest is really is real last name, then he should change it to MacLiar or something more appropriate…

Wellington, as an academic, I’m sure you are more than familiar with the idea rife at college campuses that there is no real truth, but just “competing narratives”. This is all about moral relativism.

Here’s some representative nattering on the subject by the Huffington Post:

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/william-grassie/seeking-truth-in-a-world-_b_1452389.html

Nattering indeed, gravenimage. What a load of pompous BS this article is by William Grassie, replete with big words and phrases, but this is exactly the kind of turgid, almost unreadable crap that college students have to deal with nowadays—–and why Dennis Prager has said many times that college education in our time likely makes a young person stupider.

I saw it first hand at the small college I taught at for twenty-nine years. Students, knowing that I would never grade them on their opinions, often showed me the garbage that other teachers where I taught pummeled them with, an example being a wretched poem entitled “The Pope’s penis” I also distinctly remember a young Asian woman saying to me confidentially that if she had to read one more damn African-American poem she was going to scream in class. And on and on and on with this nonsense.

Looked at from an historical point of view, it’s really the old battle waged by Socrates, who believed there were absolutes, against the Sophists, who used one rhetorical trick after another to prove otherwise. Of course, in Plato’s dialogues Socrates defeats the Sophists time after time. Complimenting this noble philosophical effort is the religiously based Judeo-Christian tradition, which also argues for absolutes as against the eventual wasteland which is relativism.

But one must have the right set of absolutes. Totalitarian ideologies also deal in absolutes but they are heinous ones. Fine examples of such ideologies being Nazism, Marxism and. of course. Islam. Fascinating as well as profoundly ironic is that modern Leftism, which is steeped in relativism, has made an alliance with the primitive and desultory absolutism put forward by Islam.

Thanks for that link, gravenimage. It helped remind me one more time how intelligent people can be very silly. Invoking La Rochefoucauld yet again, he nailed it when he opined, “The most trying fools are the bright ones.” Obama comes to mind here. So does Grassie. And so do those Sophists of old taken on by Socrates. And I leave you with this piece of wisdom by Voltaire, himself a skeptic like myself, to wit, if God (read absolutes here) does not exist then we’ll have to invent Him

Take care, my astute and highly well informed friend. Always good to hear from you.

Exactly, Wellington. Two things that stood out as especially absurd was the use of the silly term “distanciation”–which was coined by French Marxist philosopher Louis Althusser–over the much clearer word “distance”; and calling nature “a common reality-based reference”, instead of merely noting that it is reality. But there was lots more idiocy at hand.

          Very important points, Wellington.

I think Yeats put it beautifully in “The Second Coming”, where he writes,

“…The best lack all conviction, while the worst
          Are full of passionate intensity…”

How well that sums up what we often face–and no more so than now, with Mohammedans ready to murder for their foul creed, compared with waffling dhimmis in deep denial about the Jihad threat who are often ashamed and guilty about their own brave history.

Still, I will not despair–right has so often won out historically, despite our slow and inconsistent starts.

This fight is about understanding and defending our own civilized values as much as it is opposing the horrors of Islam.

Enjoyed your post with its philosophic nature, Wellington; especially your reference to Plato/Socrates’ thought “which also argues for absolutes as against the eventual wasteland which is relativism.”

Voltaire proposed that God may need to be invented, and Plato must have seen but a glimmer of God as the light in the cave – the Real, Good, True, Beautiful, Harmony. An Ideal in another, the real, “world”.

I wonder how Plato would have responded to Jesus? Skeptical, but admiring? In his (Plato’s) life he could never leave the cave to know for sure.

          Wellington,

          Thank you for the insight.

And to think this is where it all started:

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
          Genesis 2:16-17

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.”
          Genesis 3:1-4

Perhaps after enough bombings and murders, they might question their own “narrative” (i really hate that weaselword) , but it usually takes Liberals 10 to 40 years before they recognize that an ideology is evil.

White House press secretary – in other words, a professional spin-artist.

“The other thing that we can do is work to try to lift up the voices of prominent patriotic Muslims in the United States. There are millions of them!” he continued. “They can speak to the poisonous, empty bankrupt mythology that’s being propagated by ISIL.”

Great. How’s that been working out so far? Oh, yeah – it hasn’t. Face the facts: millions of muslims in the US as they may exist, there are certainly not millions of “patriotic” muslims. While there may be muslim individuals who happen to be patriotic Americans, they are so despite of their religion, not because of it – they are certainly not devout muslims.

“In some ways, this is actually just a war of narratives,” he concluded. “We want to get out our counter-narrative against ISIL. And we’re having some progress, we’re making some progress.”

Progress? Where? I see an escalation in islamic terrorist attacks in the US.

That’s what concerned Earnest about Donald Trump’s rhetoric, he said. “We can’t give them the narrative victory of suggesting that every Muslim is responsible for this kind of terrorism.

When did Trump say such a thing? I don’t like Trump, so please don’t make me defend him. Stick to facts, please.

We can’t give into this narrative that ISIL wants to build up that the United States is at war with Islam. That is false and not true.”

Doesn’t matter that the US is not at war with islam, islam is, by virtue of its orthodox teachings, at war with the US. Sunny ISIS said so. Shia Iran said so. Not exactly rocket science, is it?

    • JMB says

      Sep 19, 2016 at 6:39 pm

I agree with your reasoning. My only further comment will be on this stupid term “Lone Wolf” This is just a further attempt to distance these TERROR attacks from Islam.

As a former farm boy, I have seen the damage done to livestock caused by our native wild dogs (we don’t have wolves here). We have a big debate here, the Greens and the Loopy Left want to protect these dogs (Dingoes).Sacrifice a few head of cattle sheep, let the Dingoes live at any cost. No, a dingo is a dingo and will always attack livestock whether in a pack or as a “Lone Wolf.” It is just in their nature.

As for the millions of fine upstanding Muslims who contribute to our society, (where are they???), why aren’t they out there en-mass condemning terrorism? They wont, because just like the wolf or wild dog which will always destroy livestock it is in a Muslim’s’s nature to hate the West and it’s values. They secretly applaud every act of terrorism. Occasionally they may shed crocodile tears in front of a TV camera.

His eyes are dead, just as the eyes of the “prominent moslims” he is trying to get to say….what? Does he want them to say that “the poisonous, empty bankrupt mythology ” is also theirs?

Hello, Josh, “the poisonous, empty bankrupt mythology” is also what the moslims in this country swear by.

And, Josh, if isis and the other terrorists of islam were only trying to “talk our heads off” and arms and legs and hearts out, it would be so much easier to handle. If words could actually take lives, they wouldn’t need the swords, knives, bombs, pressure cookers, cars, etc. they are using.

If the terrorists were to target him, would he say then that it was just a lot of words? satan’s beast doesn’t have to kill him outright because he has lost any fight he might have waged against it.

i’m not going to address your point, but only a part of your post which seems to suggest that leftists are accepting the bollocks spewed by Islam. Which seems to be the case, that’s all.
    Female- accepting the bollocks.
    Male- giving the bollocks.
Just a simple thing regarding the shenanigans of the war.

Political correctness makes me sick. People are dying, bombs are going off, thousands are being murdered in the name of Allah.

Yet, this guy can say that it is just a war of ‘narratives’?

I hope it comforts the persecuted Christians of the Middle East, that they are not being raped, murdered, and sold into slavery, they are actually just part of a “narrative”.

Mr. Spencer’s writings have educated me regarding the stated goals of Islam: the conversion of all of humanity to one religion, with one god, one supreme prophet, and zero deviation from doctrine, on pain of death. Christians and Jews may be allowed to live as dhimmis, if they pay the jizya. Others, such as Hindus, were slaughtered by the millions. Presumably, agnostics and atheists are doomed as well. These facts have been well-known for 1400 years. Nobody in Saudi Arabia, Iran or ISIL is trying to hide their methods or their goals. They have given us fair warning: convert or die. This is what they were raised to believe, and the only rational response for us is to accept them at their word and prepare to defend ourselves and our way of life from the onslaught they have promised us.

The first step in self-defense is to eject from the councils of power in our land anyone who refuses to give heed to those who threaten to decapitate us (and do!). The most fitting punishment for a self-deluded fool like Josh Earnest would be to sentence him to stand for 8 hours per day in a public laughing-stock. With his neck and wrists confined in the wood, psychologists could interview him at length to learn precisely what could turn an intelligent-appearing mannequin or dummy into a seemingly sentient “spokesman” for the enemy. Then, measures could be devised to prevent embarrassments like him from arising in the future. Vote for Trump.

  24. Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde says

    Sep 20, 2016 at 2:58 am

All Muslims are Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Most Muslims are placid nominal cultural Dr Jeykll Muslims who don’t commit violence against non-Muslims as proscribed in the Qur’an and other Islamic texts.

Some Muslims are triggered into behaving like evil Mr Hyde. The trigger process varies for each violent Muslim. Some might be seeking meaning in their lives or redemption for past sins, or a desire to restore honour or alienation, which renders them susceptible to being groomed and molded by extremist literalist Muslims, whether a cleric at a Mosque or on-line, family or via exposure to jihadis. This triggering or radicalisation process transforms them into a Mr Hyde determined to enact the violence decreed by the Qur’an and Hadiths, whether by stabbing people in Minnesota or setting off bombs in NY/New Jersey.

The problem for authorities is to identify when a Muslim is transforming from placid Dr Jekyll and radicalising into evil Mr Hyde. All Muslims who believe in the Qur’an have the rabies-like precondition to start taking the Qur’an literally. Thus any Muslim who believes in the Qur’an has the potential to be a Mr Hyde killer.

This means every Muslim needs to be innoculated against the violent verses in the Qur’an, by actively rejecting them (which won’t happen due to concept of Bida or innovation) or every Muslim gets treated as a potentia evil Mr Hyde and is banished from civilized Western countries.

Donald Trump’s policy doesn’t go far enough. He just wants to halt some Muslim immigration into the US. Any Muslim already in the US unwilling to reject the violent verses in the Qur’an should also be required to leave.

The War on America domestically is an asymmetric terror campaign perpetrated by radicalized Muslims individually and in smaller cells, who are never the less part of a much wider conspiracy.

The enemy`s “Narrative” or Propaganda is sourced from their religious writings and interpretation of history, and preached to them by their clerics and leaders. They are
devoted religious fanatics who will sacrifice all, and consider it their religious duty to commit atrocities and to slaughter “infidels” in the pursuit of their goal, which is nothing less then the overthrow of western civilization.

The current “Narrative” or propaganda out of Washington refuses to acknowledge the sources of Islamic Terror and is being used to justify increased Muslim immigration while hampering efforts by law enforcement to investigate and prosecute radical Islamic terrorists. This situation is being exploited by America`s enemies.

We desperately need new leadership in Washington to counter the radical Islamic terror war being waged against us. The current leadership, and their candidate, are ideologically compromised to the extent that they are being used by the enemy to further infiltrate America and expand their operations here.

Donald Trump and Mike Pence fully understand the existential threat that radical Islam poses and will take the steps necessary to MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.

Josh Ernest has been and will continue to be a liar for the O Blame Bush Administration. Ernest: a deceptive and ironic name for a pathological liar. I don’t think truth matters with Ernest. He, like the FBI Director, will lie for a paycheck. Both are men without a conscience, supporting a pathological liar without a conscience.

There’s the truth narrative, and then there’s islam …

And what with islam being founded by a LIAR: muhammad–who’s probably the most notorious criminal that ever lived, along with those whom follow and/or defend this evil perp–well, no wonder there’s so much confusion. But there shouldn’t be this much confusion once you examine the ugly facts about islam’s evil founder: muhammad, and then the truth narrative can come into clearer focus.

I just don’t get this nonsense about not holding every Muslim responsible for Islamic “terrorism” (i.e the actions of devout Muslims in the cause of Allah). Every man, woman, and child who professes to be Muslim directly or indirectly supports the inherently violent, intolerant, supremacist ideology of Islam. And with the Koranic admonitions to Muslims to lie to non-Muslims to further the cause of Allah, why should I believe any Muslim?
