Billions to the Islamic Republic of Iran. A massive influx of Muslim migrants, among whom will inevitably be an unknowable number of murderous Islamic jihadists. And now this. You’d almost think Obama wanted to weaken the United States, except that would be inconceivable…wouldn’t it?
“Pentagon may ease recruiting rules for obese people, pot smokers and single parents,” by Douglas Ernst, Washington Times, November 2, 2016:
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter spoke on “Force of the Future” military reforms this week that may involve relaxed recruiting rules on everything from single-parent enlistees to drug use and obesity.
A Tuesday event at City College of New York featured Mr. Carter speaking on the challenges of recruitment in a nation that is fatter, increasingly at ease with smoking marijuana, and producing more single-parent homes. The result has been a fighting force that is gleaned from rural areas at twice the rate of urban environments.
“We’re going to review and update these standards as appropriate,” Mr Carter said, Military Times reported. “Now, some of these things we’ll never be able to compromise on. And we will always have to maintain high standards. But at the same time, these benchmarks must be kept relevant for both today’s force and tomorrow’s, meaning we have to ensure they’re not unnecessarily restrictive.”…

You’re ridiculous sometimes.
Easing these roles would only strengthen the armed forces by increasing the pool of those who want or could serve. These are the same arguments that were used to keep women and non-hetero folks out.

Should pedophiles be allowed to babysit young children? After al, by your logic, it would strengthen babysitting services because it would increase the pool of those who want to watch over little children. There are perfectly valid reasons to have standards regarding weight, drug use and family status, whether you like it or not. Obese people are not exactly fit to fight. Pot smokers, even if they don’t move to heavier drugs, may have substance abuse problems and be unable to act when needed. And single parents? What happens to their kids if they are KIA? “Sorry little Johnny, your mother was captured by ISIS and gang-raped to death. Off to the orphanage with you”.

Thank you for your response and support.
When I was in the army (Reserves- but 6 months active)- there were stories from those who had been in Viet Nam, of GI’s smoking weed- then being so out of it- when there was danger- they were zonked. Not only were their lives endangered-so were that of those with them or nearby, or dependent upon them.
My personal view- do what Israel& Switzerland do -ALL ABLE BODIED SERVE.
A second alternative ( vetoed by George W. Bush at the behest of the social conservatives- probably-in my view– the best bill ever put forth by Dems.–) ALLOW ILLEGALS-OVER (not sure if it was 17 or 18-under-I think 35 or so) to ENLIST 2 YEAR MINIMUM. IF SERVE HONORABLY, AUTOMATIC CITIZENSHIP- AS LONG AS THERE WAS NO FELONY CONVICTION. And, parent(s) and siblings could apply- with no wait time-again, if no felony conviction.
Another alternative–USED IN WW2 (and I think Korea)-prisoners who volunteer, and serve honorably- conviction(s) removed from record.

I have a cousin that smoked pot and did hard drugs through his Vietnam tour. They diagnosed him with Post Traumatic Stress., He never saw any action. He was never shot at and he never fired his gun. He did say he could hear artillery in the distance and this caused him stress. The government has declared him 100% disabled and provides him as many free drugs he wants. The truth is that he has always been mentally deranged and he did drugs before his tour in the army. After Nam the Army kicked him out. Now we will pay for this worthless beggar for the rest of his life.

This is the kind of nonsense that undoubtedly tickles the fancy of leftists who want to enforce parity of results to avoid “discrimination”. There are perfectly valid reasons to have those standards. Look, people in urban areas can be just as fit as people in rural areas. They just choose not to. And maybe I’m seeing things where they aren’t, but aren’t people from rural areas usually more devout in their religion? You know, what democrats call “flyover country”?

Absolutely not going out showing my sympathies. No Donald Trump cap, and absolutely not any sign of supporting the only opposition party out of eight in the Parliament (Riksdag) here in Sweden. It is hated by media and lots of aggressive people. I use to say I am for the majority parties. Always saying the same as in media.
They give som 20.000 crowns ( some $2,500 ) a month to criminals, believing criminals will be kind if you give them money. Building up a mafia nation. Like in the arabstates. Many arabs here. More than from neighboring countries. Growing in numbers. Lots of males. Instead of fighting the ISIS.
It will be worse with a new democratic administration in the White House I am certain of. Everywhere.

A few weeks ago, in collaboration with ISIS jihadists, US planes attacked and murdered over 80 Syrian soldiers and signaled ISIS jihadists to attack immediately after the bombing. It’s the new 21st Century fighting force: obese single parent pot smokers (he forgot to include Muslims). The truth is they are scraping the bottom of the barrel of “volunteers”, who are there primarily because of the lack of opportunity for real jobs.
BTW, I live in a pot legal State and have smoked a little myself. I do believe that Prohibition had worse effects, wasting law enforcement, judicial and prison dollars, getting users fired from their jobs and breaking up families.
But honestly you should see these legal State-approved pot shops – they are devoted to ever increasing potency, extracts, concentrates and THC infused sodas and edibles in what seems like a single-minded obsession with getting as high as humanly possible.
I used to think that legal pot would be an acceptable and safer alternative to harder drugs, now I wonder if it may turn out to be an on ramp to them.
And then there is the blatant hypocrisy of the Government, which did a complete about face once they realized the magnitude of the taxation revenues – with no amnesty, compensation or apologies for the hundreds of thousands who they incarcerated for so many years.
Eric Jones says
No pot users. They spend all their time looking for pot. No Obese, not fit to fight. Obesity leads to other health problems. Single parents have no business being burdend with combat, if they die the kids become wards of the state. The USA should stop intervening everywhere and protect its own borders. And yes, Obama is trying to destroy our military from within. He is a 5th columnist Impeach Obama now.

The idea that cannabis users “spend all their time looking for pot” is both laughable in its lack of reality and totally irrelevant.
You clearly have not done any serious reading on the effects of cannabis if you think it causes people to act like meth-heads who ravenously search for their drug of choice all day long.
Secondly, a fair comparison of the impact of marijuana use on someone’s readiness to serve would be to compare it to alcohol use (which by the way is both more addictive and more detrimental to the health of the user). In both cases if someone has an *abuse* problem they will be less fit to operate in combat. However, recreational use of a moderate nature will have essentially no impact on readiness for service.
If someone is legally able to purchase and consume cannabis where they live, and is otherwise fit to serve, I see no reason why they should be excluded anymore than someone who consumes other legal intoxicants such as alcohol.

Yes, over the 25 years of my USMC-DoD Civilian career, the military establishment is deteriorating.
Old guys always say that, I know.
But sometimes, they are right, and this is one of those times.
This sort of thing happened toward the end of the Roman Empire, when Romans themselves degenerated beyond the point where they could become legionnaires and foreign mercenaries became the norm.
Maybe that’s why “we need our Muslim allies” so much, these days?
They will, after all, fight. For what, we’re a little in the dark,. But they do fight. That, we know.
Truth is, I’m not sure I’d fight for our current regime. That’s one reason that I retired.
AS we often said, “No good deed goes unpunished.” ANd, it doesn’t !
IF you actually fix something that’s wrong, you hadn’t better get caught, because you will have made the wrong people look bad.
At this point, given our losing streak, maybe we would be better off if we made the military into a Day Care for Single Parents.
If it’s national defense that you’re worried about, give it break.
No one in the Federal Government is concerned about it.
So, how can there be a problem?
“If it was really that bad, someone would have fixed it,” as we used to say.
No, I doubt that anyone can fix it.
Eventually, the last good people will be gone and it will collapse.
Strangely enough, it really doesn’t take that many good people to keep the rusty old thing running.
But when they’re gone, it’s over.
SAKOVKT says
This business actually started years ago when the DoD became a flagship for “environmental consciousness” and “safety”, probably with the Aberdeen Three in 1989.
Say whatever about the engineers involved, the environmentalists used the court victory to extend their control over everything, including things that really didn’t concern them.
Today, the worst thing a base commander can do is get an EPA or Safety violation on his record, never mind anything else.
This has over empowered the Safety and Environmental, Industrial Hygiene people to the point of disrupting other operations like training and maintenance.
Obviously, no one really wants to get hurt or act irresponsibly.
But the transgressions in question were isolated incidents and there are rules to remediate them.
The Political Left used Love Canal and the Aberdeen Three to extend its control over things it is essentially hostile to, to begin with.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal was another incident, and a big one, in which the Army did act pretty irresponsibly. However, Rocky Mountain was a Go-Co : army owned, contractor operated.
There’s a lot more to Love Canal than ever became widely known, too.
But that’s how the Left used the media portrayal to pursue its agenda.
Not surprising, the DoD has since become a champion of homosexuality, which is not a good thing for military units for a lot of traditionally sound reasons.
While Petreous’ COIN anti-terrorist doctrine might sound like traditional Galula or von Dach, it’s really just militarized social engineering and failed, like most social engineering.
Our army of the future?
I’d say, Orwell’s International Brigade of “Homage to Catalonia” or the soldiers’ council ridden Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic.
These were unmanageable military organizations.
Even though Orwell tries to glorify his comrades in the Spanish Civil War, it’s clear that Caballero was running a Goober Outfit that paid for its amateurishness and “equality” in the ranks.
Contrary to popular history, there was every reason to think that the Red Army would collapse quickly in the face of Operation Barbarossa, since it had been purged of Whites and re-staffed with Reds who did many of the same things that our army is presently doing, like using women in combat roles.
And don’t think that our army today does not have its political kommissars in environmental, safety , industrial hygiene. unions and human resources departments.
No, if you really want to fight a war to win, our military has long since given up that attraction.
And if you don’t win, was here any sense in fighting to begin with?
Right?
That’s the Fog of War which really isn’t all that foggy, anymore.
Do the right thing, and you’ll end up like Breaker Morant, “Butchered to Make a Dutchman’s Holiday”.
