Robert Spencer in PJ Media: Priebus Calls Aspects of Islam ‘Problematic.’ Are They?

Nov 22, 2016 4:45 pm By Robert Spencer

The Trump administration is about to make huge decisions based on the answer. My latest in PJ Media:

trump-priebus

President-elect Trump’s new chief of staff Reince Preibus touched the political third rail Sunday when he enunciated a truth that is almost universally denied. Even those who know it to be true seldom dare speak it in public.

Aspects of Islam are … “problematic.”

Priebus uttered this momentous word when he was asked on ABC about remarks made by Trump’s choice for national security advisor, Michael Flynn, about political aspects of Islam. Priebus responded:

Clearly, there are some aspects of that faith that are problematic and we know them, we’ve seen it. It certainly isn’t a blanket for all people of that faith, but Mike Flynn is one of the most highly respected intelligence officers in America. Certainly no one can deny that.

Certainly not, but many people do deny that anything about Islam is “problematic.” Hillary Clinton famously declared the following in 2015:

Let’s be clear: Islam is not our adversary. Muslims are peaceful and tolerant people and have nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism.

Clinton wasn’t just stating her own opinion. She was repeating official Obama administration policy — and what certainly would have been the policy of her administration, had she become president.

Priebus’ “problematic” comment comes after a campaign during which Trump repeatedly criticized Clinton for refusing to name the enemy as “radical Islam.” Clearly, the Trump administration intends to take a new direction regarding the jihad threat.

We can be just as certain that the Leftist political establishment and media will excoriate Trump for supposedly alienating peaceful Muslims and driving them towards jihad by calling their religion “problematic.”

So, major policy decisions are about to turn on this question: is anything about Islam actually “problematic”?

Certainly, jihad terrorists routinely — or primarily — invoke the Qur’an and Muhammad’s example to justify their actions and to recruit peaceful Muslims.

Abdullah Azzam — who, along with Osama bin Laden, co-founded al-Qaeda — wrote in his book length exhortation to jihad, Join the Caravan, that “the Prophet (SAWS) was a master of the Mujahideen” who “used to go out on military expeditions or send out an army at least every two months.”

Are Muhammad’s “military expeditions” in any way “problematic”? Egyptian scholar Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd explains:

If we follow the rules of interpretation developed from the classical science of Koranic interpretation, it is NOT possible to condemn terrorism in religious terms.

It remains completely true to the classical rules in its evolution of sanctity for its own justification. This is where the secret of its theological strength lies.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his fellow 9/11 defendants, in their lengthy apologia for 9/11, explicitly depicted it as an Islamic jihad attack:

Many thanks to God, for his kind gesture, and choosing us to perform the act of Jihad for his cause and to defend Islam and Muslims. Therefore, killing you and fighting you, destroying you and terrorizing you, responding back to your attacks, are all considered to be great legitimate duty in our religion.

Indeed, Taliban terrorist Baitullah Mehsud declared:

Allah on 480 occasions in the Holy Koran extols Muslims to wage jihad. We only fulfill God’s orders. Only jihad can bring peace to the world.

So, these terrorist leaders certainly found Islam to be “problematic.” Are these terrorists “extremists”?

Well — even though they were all devout Muslims determined to follow their religion properly — we should first turn to the authoritative sources in Sunni Islam, the schools of Sunni jurisprudence (madhahib), to answer that question.

Shafi’i school:

A Shafi’i manual of Islamic law was certified in 1991 by the clerics at Al-Azhar University, perhaps the leading authority in the Islamic world, as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy.

When discussing jihad, that manual stipulates that “the caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians … until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax.”

It added a comment from Sheikh Nuh Ali Salman, a Jordanian expert on Islamic jurisprudence: the caliph wages this war only “provided that he has first invited [Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians] to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya) … while remaining in their ancestral religions.” (Reliance of the Traveller, o9.8).

Of course, there is no caliph today, unless one accepts the claims of the Islamic State, and hence the oft-repeated claim that Osama, et al are waging jihad illegitimately, as no state authority has authorized their jihad.

However — they explain their actions in terms of defensive jihad. Defensive jihad needs no state authority to initiate it, and becomes “obligatory for everyone” (Reliance of the Traveller, o9.3) if a Muslim land is attacked.

And the defensive jihad is not declared over when peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims as equals is achieved. Reliance of the Traveller specifies that the warfare against non-Muslims must continue until “the final descent of Jesus.”

After that? “[N]othing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ descent” (o9.8).

Sounds problematic.

Hanafi school: A Hanafi manual of Islamic law repeats the same injunctions.

It insists that people must be called to embrace Islam before being fought, “because the Prophet so instructed his commanders, directing them to call the infidels to the faith.” It emphasizes that jihad must not be waged for economic gain, but solely for religious reasons. From the call to Islam,

“ … the people will hence perceive that they are attacked for the sake of religion, and not for the sake of taking their property, or making slaves of their children, and on this consideration it is possible that they may be induced to agree to the call, in order to save themselves from the troubles of war.”

However:

“[I]f the infidels, upon receiving the call, neither consent to it nor agree to pay capitation tax [jizya], it is then incumbent on the Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them, because God is the assistant of those who serve Him, and the destroyer of His enemies, the infidels, and it is necessary to implore His aid upon every occasion; the Prophet, moreover, commands us so to do.” (Al-Hidayah, II. 140)

Maliki school: Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), a pioneering historian and philosopher, was also a Maliki legal theorist. In his renowned Muqaddimah, the first work of historical theory, he notes:

“[In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and (the obligation to) convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force.”

In Islam, the person in charge of religious affairs is concerned with “power politics,” because Islam is “under obligation to gain power over other nations.”

Hanbali school: The great medieval theorist of what is commonly known today as “radical” or “fundamentalist” Islam, Ibn Taymiyya (Taqi al-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyya, 1263-1328), was a Hanbali jurist.

He directed:

“[S]ince lawful warfare is essentially jihad and since its aim is that the religion is God’s entirely and God’s word is uppermost, therefore according to all Muslims, those who stand in the way of this aim must be fought.”

This is also taught by modern-day scholars of Islam. Majid Khadduri was an Iraqi scholar of Islamic law of international renown. In his book War and Peace in the Law of Islam, which was published in 1955 and remains one of the most lucid and illuminating works on the subject, Khadduri says this about jihad:

“The state which is regarded as the instrument for universalizing a certain religion must perforce be an ever expanding state. The Islamic state, whose principal function was to put God’s law into practice, sought to establish Islam as the dominant reigning ideology over the entire world …

The jihad was therefore employed as an instrument for both the universalization of religion and the establishment of an imperial world state. (P. 51)”

Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee, is an assistant professor on the faculty of Shari’ah and Law of the International Islamic University in Islamabad. In his 1994 book The Methodology of Ijtihad, he quotes Twelfth Century Maliki jurist Ibn Rushd:

“Muslim jurists agreed that the purpose of fighting with the People of the Book (the Jews) … is one of two things: it is either their conversion to Islam or the payment of jizyah.”

Nyazee concludes:

“This leaves no doubt that the primary goal of the Muslim community, in the eyes of its jurists, is to spread the word of Allah through jihad, and the option of poll-tax [jizya] is to be exercised only after subjugation.”

The authoritative sources from these four schools of Islamic jurisprudence not only claim that Islam has “problematic” aspects, they claim that the “problematic” aspects are not “radical” commands — they are in fact central to Islam.

Further, this is to say nothing of the many, many passages of the Qur’an exhorting believers to wage war against unbelievers.

It would be illuminating if Hillary Clinton or John Kerry or Pope Francis or one of the others who maintain that Islam is a religion of peace produced some quotations from Muslim authorities they consider “authentic.”

Also, they would need to explain why the authorities I’ve quoted above, and others like them, are inauthentic.

While no single Muslim authority can proclaim what is “authentic” Islam, and thus it would be prudent not to make sweeping statements about what “authentic Islam” actually is, clearly many Muslims believe that authentic Islam sanctions violence against non-Muslims — and they can offer centuries of common, popular Islamic literature to back their belief….

He said that quite some time ago, even then any ‘golden age’ was in the past and Islam has acted as gigantic hand-brake on development in the Muslim world since.

Meanwhile Western civilisation has had the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the nuclear and now the digital age… never-mind military advancements.

The supremacist message of Islam, makes these all difficult to stomach.

So not only does it seem, Islam’s core message persists, it now comes with a civilisation-sized chip on its shoulder.

Certainly no one can deny that.

Wrong, Reince. Certainly the elites *will* deny it. I always detested Priebus as the worst of RINOs, a truly awful lot, for his lordship over a party that routinely sells out to big spending, open borders, lawless government, you name it.

But when he decided to make good on his word, and to back Trump’s call for returning America to a sovereign nation by returning to border control that most all other nations have, I had to give him credit. Now here he his breaking the hymen, so to speak, of mandatory silence on the Islam fictive reality, the inherently peaceful faith.

And it looks like Keith Ellison, he of the crocodile tears and terror ties, will become the chairman of the DNC. The starkest of contrasts between the so to move on RNC Chair vs. the soon to be enthroned DNC Chair. The battle line couldn’t be sharper. This is the way it should be, the way it should’ve been al along.

    “Problematic”.

    Understatement of the year.

We are dealing with a transnational and very ancient Death Cult – the Religion of Blood and War, but in a deeper sense, the Religion of Murder, Lies, Rape, Robbery and Slavery – that is super-dangerous because, like certain types of serial killer, it is able, according to circumstances, to mask its identity ; able, when ‘weak’, to turn on the charm or pour out a protective ink-cloud of BS. It is a system of Abuse to the nth degree, very practised at messing with people’s minds.

A *simple* Death Cult, like the thuggee system, or the Aztec system, or the human sacrifices at Kumasi in West Africa, is easy to recognise, because it always does what it does, out in the open, and everyone knows what it is.

*Islam* has a huge repertoire of techniques of deceit, ambush, concealment, masking, deflection, confusion; ways of creating confusion and exploiting denial in and division amongst its targeted victims and even amongst those that it has subjugated and is oppressing and exploiting as dhimmis.

Yes, dda, an understatement but for Priebus to utter even this is a HUGE step in the right direction. Actually, I think people like Priebus, Flynn and Trump himself (and Trump himself said earlier this year, “I think Islam hates us”———-he didn’t say some Muslims hate us but that this whole damn religion does and, of course, he was eminently correct here) are decidedly moving in the right direction. And it should also not be lost on anyone like you, who knows what Islam is really all about, what a Hillary Presidency would have said and done about Islam.

Give it time. Huge movements, dramatic turnarounds, usually don’t occur all at once. People have to get used to, take their time for, a 180 degree turn. For instance, coming to the conclusion that mankind could produce a major religion which is rotten to the core and a mortal enemy of freedom, equality under the law, fine music, good beer, romantic love, and happiness in general.

Glass half full here, not half empty I would argue. Hope you and yours are doing well down in Australia land where dhimmis aplenty, as in most every other Western nation, are only too ready to continue to make excuses for the worst religion ever.

Someone needs to produce a Michael Moore type documentary movie, but not produced by a douchebag. But just in the sense that it’s brutally honest, and released Worldwide in theaters everywhere.

Starting with Muhammad, who he was, and his rise to power. Proof that he’s the “perfect man” all Muslims MUST emulate. Why it is Muhammad is the ONLY person to receive these revelations, and why they seemed to change over time to suit his needs. Expose all of his lies, murdering, pedophilia, dishonor, robbery, sedition, and countless other crimes that would have him locked up on Death Row today.

Then an examination of Quran, Hadith, and Sira (all the threatening sections). An explanation of Islamic Abrogation, all the forms of Islamic sanctioned deceit, and the Three Stages of Jihad.

A brief history of history’s problems with Islam, from their hijrah, beginning in the 8th Century, all the way through the Crusades, to expel the Ummah from Christian lands.

Perhaps the film could have short and multiple video interview responses of Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, David Wood, and other Counter-jihad titans.

A real, no holds-barred expose on what’s happening with the hijrah, the destruction of Western Europe and the US, all according to Islamic plan. A clear statement of Islam’s objective, Worldwide Caliphate.

The film should include plenty of video footage of all the barbaric killings, to include beheadings, rapes, drownings, immolations, crucifixions, stonings, amputations, hangings, throwing people from high towers, ALL of which are mandated in their holy texts. Also including the horrible subjugation of Muslim women, FGMs and all.

And wrapping the movie up with a real World plan to win this zero-sum clash of two civilizations with only one winner. A detailed strategy of how the Kaffir wins, criminalizing the practice or promotion of Islam Worldwide.

This movie will shock. It will be profitable. And it will show the honest, horrible truth that 1400 years ago the Ummah started a war with the rest of us. They’re deadly serious about it, and they’ll never give up.

Most Kaffir are totally ignorant of all these things, and must be educated.

I’m trying to do this, but I need help.

          Nov 26, 2016 at 9:33 pm

Daniel Triplett, you have outlined exactly one of the better strategies to expose the realities of Islam. Too many of my fairly intelligent friends are simply not informed, too busy with their lives, etc. There are so many facets that may be explored to reveal the dark side of Islam — from the death penalty for conversion to the repression of women, stoning of adulteresses, honor killings, the ethics, or lack thereof, in taqiyya, cutting at the neck, treatment of and attitudes towards unbelievers in general, the jizya and the ultimate religious option for unbelievers which is conversion or death. The Allah-condoned rape and abuse of women who are unbelievers is now rampant in Europe. It is no secret that Islam seeks world domination with the elimination of all other religions. There is plenty of evidence that Islam as a religion of peace is a myth. Or, if Islam is to become a religion of peace, the 75 to 85% of the Muslim population that is peaceful needs to acknowledge and eliminate the passages of evil in the Quo’ran, the Hadith and the other scriptural texts. Again, I find so many people who are simply uninformed. We are faced with a dangerous condition that must be reversed. As you suggest, the movie industry can solve the problem. Assuredly, the will and the talent exists for such an undertaking, but the window of opportunity may be brief. That window is virtually gone in Western Europe with their Hate laws and examples of repression as in the case of Geert Wilders, but truth is protected by our First Amendment, and I suspect that hate laws would not prevail anyway in the US against the expression of fact. The making of such movies/documentaries would be a dangerous undertaking but such, regrettably is the nature of war. Without naming them, there are political movie makers out there who might carry the task. Assuredly, much would be accomplished. The best we can do as individuals is to spread the word with the hope that these ideas will catch and someone or some organization with the necessary power and influence will take action.

        • Daniel Triplett says

          Nov 30, 2016 at 2:48 pm

          @Sam Kent

Thanks for the response and for the ideas Sam. I’ll add them to the program.

I must say though, that when you hope for the “75 – 85% of the peaceful Muslims to challenge the jihadists, then remove all the violent passages from the [source texts]” I do believe that’s wishful thinking on your part that’s never going to happen. I’ve read that at least 80% of Muslims just in Dar al-Harb support Sharia. And I think the other 20% are lying, or else why do they call themselves Muslims? Sharia is Islam, and Islam is Sharia.

Islam isn’t a buffet, where they get to pick and choose which verses to follow (or take seriously). While Christians often do something like that, what with all the different denominations and all, Muslims on the other hand take the whole damn program deadly serious. People willing to murder their own children to please a fictional deity, or honor kill their daughters for a perceived insignificant sleight, are deadly serious about their cause. Many countries in Dar al-Islam require schoolchildren to memorize every word of the Quran.

There’s a reason the Quran hasn’t changed since Muhammad’s death, 1400 years ago. Muslims believe the Quran is the literal word of Allah. To reform it would be to deny the initial “perfection” of Allah’s word, and the compulsory emulation of his “prophet,” Muhammad, the perfect man.

To even suggest reformation is called “Blasphemy,” and will get you promptly executed in Dar al-Islam.

Remember also about “Abrogation.” The latter violent revelations, when in contradiction to the earlier peaceful revelations, supersede them, making the peaceful revelations obsolete. No one gets to choose to follow the “peaceful” verses, disregarding the violent ones. They’re ALL violent. The peaceful passages are obsolete, and may as well just be deleted entirely from the Quran.

But that’s one of the Ummah’s favorite ways of deceiving Kaffir: They point to the obsolete peaceful verses, saying, “See, Islam is a Religion of Peace.” But they know they’re lying with Taqiyya when they tell you that. They know about Abrogation, and now you do too.

That piece by Moore was very thorough and scholarly. Here is a little taste…

FROM “COLD WAR” TO GUERRA FRIA?
      Patrick L. Moore

Islam is a strong and robust religion driving a rich family of cultures which, for good or ill, are not the same as ours in the West. Islamic values and beliefs are often different from Western values and beliefs which are based on a competing Judaeo/Christian and Classical heritage, despite certain common origins and roots. To gloss over those differences is irrational and potentially dangerous.

For American policy makers to ignore the unique character of Islam and its tenets could be catastrophic. Someone once said, apparently in a hurried fit of summary, that “Communists” were, after all, only “Democrats in a hurry.” How tragically wrong he was. It would be foolishness on a similar scale to assume that Muslims are merely ethnic or colorful “Unitarians” whose core beliefs may be blithely disregarded for reasons of ignorance, political correctness or Modernist insensitivity to the power of religious conviction.

Hurrah! From the heights of our new government comes the opening salvo and a shot across the bow of the Islamic invaders. Finally.

See its warfare but its LEGAL warfare, its warfare but its HOLY warfare (which is the worst kind, actually).

    “Problematic” indeed.

Identifying these ‘problematic aspects’ and acknowledging them openly in the Public Domain is an essential step towards not only developing competent approaches to tackling Islamic violence, terrorism and related intimidation; it is also a necessary step for regaining a basic sense of self respect amongst non-Muslims.

A god who 480 times in the Koran exhorts Muslims to wage jihad is morally inferior to a lot of human beings. God ought to be better, unimaginably better, than men – not far inferior to them.

Islam is problematic in the same sense as Nazism was: both are chauvinistic, totalitarian and murderous death cults, except that Islam is much more depraved.

Aspects of Islam problematic?? I can hear all the imams and sheiks crying, “Islam is a ‘religion of peace!” Yeah! And pigs might also fly! This is the sort of madness which ensues when criminals make the law – and gullible politically correct Western leaders swallow their propaganda or Islamic taqiyya.

Because most people in the West come from a religious background, we tend to regard religion as a ‘sacred cow’ – not to be criticised or even offended in any way. And in these days of political correctness, most of our leaders simply don’t want to know about those aspects of Islam which might be “problematic” They might be called ‘racists’, ‘Islamophobes’ or ‘Xenophobes’.

Trump’s appointments seem to be men of a different calibre from those appeasing, complicit lapdogs for Islam under Obama, Let’s hope that they can peel off the ‘veil’ of this insidious ideology, and expose it for what it is – a criminal ideology which has no place in a civilized society.

“Certain aspects” of Islam are “problematic” even if you forget about jihad and terrorism. No free speech — if you draw a cartoon or utter a sentence they don’t like you can be jailed and flogged or just hacked to death. Apartheid for women. I wish the people who claim that Islam respects women would point me to one Muslim controlled country where women have anything close to equal rights. Sexual abuse of children — since Mohammed “married” a 9 year old girl (well 6 but we know he waited till she was all of 9 to rape her) and since nothing he did can be wrong — no problem forcing children into “marriage” (legitimized sexual abuse).

One cannot not analyze Islam into oblivion. In science, the simpler the explanation is the more beautiful the explanation! Islam is a medieval society of sex fiends and slave traders, who enjoy torturing and murdering humans. Muslims follow the demonic influence of Allah, AKA, Baphomet, AKA Inanna, AKA Sin, AKA Al Illah, AKA Iluma – the horned goat god of the ancient Sabaeans. The best way to tame them is with an exorcism using plenty of oil of Chrism and holy water! We can’t compel them but Jesus Christ can!
