Why would this “Islamophobe” not want a kidney from a Muslim donor? Because he is a “racist,” you see, and CBS is trying to teach its unsuspecting “Pure Genius” audience, who tuned in to be entertained, not hectored with political messages, that the only reason why anyone is suspicious of Islam or Muslims is because they don’t like “brown people.”
In reality, of course, people of all races believe in Islam and its jihad imperative. The idea that a man who needs a kidney would rather die than receive one from a Muslim is howlingly absurd (like the concept of “Islamophobia” itself), and could only be possible in TV Land.
“Patient Diagnosed as Islamophobic on CBS’s ‘Pure Genius,'” by Justin Ashford, MRC NewsBusters, December 16, 2016 (thanks to Pamela Geller):
Well, it seems Pure Genius is continuing to follow the Hollywood script by adding a patient with a case of “Islamophobia.”
On Thursday’s episode, “Around the World in Eight Kidneys,” the doctors at Bunker Hill are gearing up for eight kidney transplants, and sixteen surgeries. Each recipient will have a family donor for another patient, creating a chain.
Dean (Nick Hardcastle) is one such candidate who needs a kidney, with his wife donating to someone else on his behalf. He tells Dr. Strauss (Ward Horton) he’s all for diversity but doesn’t “want a kidney from just anyone,” hinting he’s seen someone he’s not too fond of.
Later, Dr. Strauss is prepping Dean for surgery and he demands to know who his donor is. Dr. Strauss tells him his donor is an Egyptian Muslim, which Dean finds unacceptable.
Dr. Strauss: Good Morning, Dean. You ready for your big day?
Dean: Depends. Now’s your chance to tell me, Doc. Straight up, just between you and me. Who’s my donor?
Dr. Strauss: We’re still on this.
Dean: Yeah. Because I’ve seen some pretty suspicious-looking people in the hallway.
Dr. Strauss: You know what Dean, fine. Your donor is Azeem Habib, She’s Egyptian and she’s Muslim.
Dean: Then I’m out. I’m not doing this. I’m breaking the chain.
Dr. Strauss: It’s too late to break the chain. Your wife’s already in surgery. The only person who wouldn’t get a kidney is you.
Dean: You set me up doctor.
Dr. Strauss: No, I didn’t. I simply protected the other patients from your bigotry. So it’s up to you. You can either take that hatred that’s inside of you to your grave, or you can open up your heart a little….

I doubt that the “pure geniuses”, the Ulamas, at Al-Azhar University in Cairo would allow any Egyptian muslim, or any muslim at all, to donate their kidney to a kafir.
How do the pure geniuses at CBS explain that? Maybe, they recommend suspending reality to believe and enjoy fantasy world fiction?

Brian Hoff – I am very skeptical about that. [“Muslims are allow (sic) to donate kidney”.]. Maybe they can donate to other Muslims, but I would like to see citations and references to acknowledge that they can donate to non-muslims. Has some Ayatollah or Islamic scholar ruled on that? I like to read it. I can imagine exceptionsfor non- muslims who support the jihad, but for any old kafir?
I am open to be convinced. As Angemon says: “Citations, please.” Well, maybe not always “please”.
BTW, Brian Hoff, your English makes me think that is not your real name. Am I correct on that ?
Jack Diamond says
You can find citations on the Islam Q&A site (from the Islamic Fiqh Council) that it is haraam to transplant organs on which life depends (heart, liver) but permissible for organs like a kidney.
As for going to a kaffir, it is permitted, an exception might yet be (the “scholars” are still debating) the same as that related to the matter of Muslims donating blood:
“It is permissible for a Muslim to donate blood to a non-Muslim, except when that non-Muslim is known to be in a position of fighting the Muslims (either by belonging to a state which is in a state of war with Muslims or by supporting aggression towards them). In such a case it is not permissible to donate blood, because this will help them to fight Muslims. If the Muslim has no way of knowing to whom his blood will go, he should act according to what he thinks is most likely to happen. If he thinks that it is most likely to go to a kaafir who is not fighting the Muslims, it is permitted to donate, otherwise it is not.”

The entire precept makes no sense to me. I am not a doctor, and science was never my strong point. BUT, A KIDNEY OR OTHER ORGAN, IF FROM A FAMILY MEMBER, HAS MORE OF A CHANCE OF BEING ACCEPTED, than one from a stranger. (Although organs from strangers can be accepted by the body)-.
So, if there are 8 donors and 8 needed recipients, medically, it makes more sense to do relatives.
(A friend’s adult child, some years ago, needed a transplant. The friend told me that there were numerous tests to be sure that the CHANCES WERE (and no 100% guarantee) that the body would not reject the organ.
This entire segment seems just stupid. (I -in my view, luckily, do not watch television-to be possibly subject to such utter nonsense).
gravenimage says
Oliver, my guess is that this is a “morality fable”–I use the term loosely–from “Pure Genius”.
You are quite right–doctors typically look for *very* close genetic matches, especially family members. Even leaving aside the question of organ donations in Islam–let alone the fantasy of Islamophobic ‘Mericans–the chances that an Egyptian would be a match for an American of European heritage is pretty unlikely.

Oliver, thanks for posting the name of the movie, “The Impossible Spy.” Years ago, I read a book about Eli Cohen. While I don’t remember its title, the book was excellent. The writers of that scene need a different analogy. Tell me, how many anti-communists in need of a kidney would have refused one donated by a communist? That would be a somewhat analogous situation. Few critics of the expansionist totalitarian agenda of Islam would, if in need of a kidney, refuse one donated by a Muslim. The objection to Islam is not physical or racial. If it were, then t Islam-critics would also be running around screaming about Hinduism and any other tan-skinned culture. But the idiots who wrote the scene on “Pure Genius” — how’s that for irony — maliciously or in the grossest ignorance paint people like me as a racist. I’m all for legal immigration coming to my country from all over the world, regardless of the immigrants’ skin color, provided they are not part of a totalitarian movement claiming large numbers of adherents. Yes, I know that many Muslims are not totalitarians. But hundreds of millions support totalitarian aspects of Islamic law, and moreover, have the core texts of Islam and the example of Muhammad on their side. Quoting Islam

(1) “Of all religious groups, Muslims are the most resistant to organ donation — largely because they’re confused about whether it’s permitted within their faith, a British medical expert told delegates to an international transplantation conference in Vancouver Tuesday. Dr. Adnan Sharif, a Muslim kidney specialist completing his training, led an international survey to find out why Muslims agree with organ donation, and would happily accept a transplant, but aren’t so keen on consenting to being donors. In an interview after his talk, Sharif said just over a third believed it was compatible with their Islamic beliefs. For the others, the two biggest reasons cited for being reluctant to donate was their interpretation of the Koran and the advice they heard from spiritual leaders at their local mosques. ‘Muslims have this argument, this belief, that organ donation is a sin even though most scholars say it’s OK.’ He said the survey detected some disturbing attitudes that would appear to be based on prejudice. For instance, ALMOST A QUARTER OF RESPONDENTS SAID THEY WOULD ONLY WANT TO DONATE AN ORGAN IF THEY KNEW IT WAS GOING TO ANOTHER MUSLIM. ABOUT 10 PER CENT SAID THEY WOULD PREFER TO RECEIVE AN ORGAN FROM A FELLOW MUSLIM. ‘It’s a help-your-own kind of attitude, but to direct an organ to a certain individual is not only unethical, but illegal.’” (http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Muslims+most+opposed+organ+donation+Survey/3414608/story.html).
(2) “We undertook a qualitative study of the attitudes of 141 U.K. Muslim Indo-Asians to organ donation. (…) With respect to organ donation in particular, its importance was generally discounted, often in deference to authority figures within the community who appeared negatively disposed. The culture-specific issues arguing against donation included a sense of the sacredness of the body, a fatalistic approach to illness, a belief that organs took on an independent role as ‘witnesses’ to an individual’s life on Judgement Day and an anxiety that the donor would have no control of the probity of the recipient of an organ. (…) A large number of participants expressed their belief that Islam forbids organ donation, on the basis of statements from the Qur’an and traditional Islamic literature. Participants commonly observed that organ donation is never mentioned in these sources. It was also a recurring theme that this issue should be referred to Muslim scholars to determine their opinion. When expressed, Imams’ opinions had a significant impact: 10 participants admitted to canceling their organ donor cards on the advice of their Imam. (…) Because they believed in organs acting as witnesses, many were also cautious about the individual who would be the recipient of their organs. MANY SAID THEY WOULD DONATE ONLY TO MUSLIMS—INDEED, MANY STIPULATED ONLY TO ‘GOOD’ MUSLIMS. SIMILARLY, THEY DID NOT WANT TO RECEIVE ORGANS FROM NON-MUSLIMS, SINCE THOSE DONORS MAY HAVE EATEN PORK, DRUNK ALCOHOL OR SMOKED, ALL OF WHICH ARE FORBIDDEN IN ISLAM.” (Fawzi S. AlKhawaria, Gerry V. Stimsona & Anthony N. Warrens, “Attitudes Toward Transplantation in U.K. Muslim Indo-Asians in West London”, American Journal of Transplantation 5(6), July 2005, p. 1326-1331 – http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1600-6143.2005.00814.x/pdf).
(3) “Christian Arab Americans were more likely than Muslim Arab Americans to believe organ donation after death was justifiable. Higher educational attainment and income, as well as greater acculturation into American society, were associated with greater odds of believing organ donation to be justified.” (Aasim I. Padela, Shoaib Rasheed, Gareth J. W. Warren et al., “Factors associated with positive attitudes toward organ donation in Arab Americans”, Clinical Transplantation 25(5), Sept.-Oct. 2011, p. 800–808 – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21175847).
(4) “Research has shown that Muslims are less likely than other religious groups to believe organ donation is ethically justified, and suggests that religious values may be an obstacle to donation.” (https://sciencelife.uchospitals.edu/2014/03/13/religious-beliefs-of-american-muslims-influence-attitudes-toward-organ-donation/).
(5) “While some studies suggest that Islamic ideals motivate individuals to donate their own organs or those of their relatives, a greater number of studies find religious beliefs to be a barrier toward organ donation among Muslims in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom. Furthermore, several studies conducted among Malays, Arab Americans, and British South Asians report that an affiliation with Islam is independently associated with negative attitudes toward organ donation. (…) Muslims who view life challenges as punishments from God may be less motivated to enter the donor pool on account of feeling that their organs may propagate God’s displeasure onto the recipient. Such a hypothesis is plausible because the idea that the donor’s organs carry spiritual ramifications for the recipient is featured in Muslim debates over donating or receiving organs from non-Muslims.” (Aasim I. Padela & Hatidza Zaganjor, “Relationships Between Islamic Religiosity and Attitude Toward Deceased Organ Donation Among American Muslims: A Pilot Study”, Transplantation 97(12), June 2014, p. 1292-1299 – https://pmr.uchicago.edu/sites/pmr.uchicago.edu/files/uploads/Padela_Relationshipsbetweenreligiosity%26deceasedorgandonationinAMs.pdf).
(6) “It is imperative for healthcare providers to examine Western Muslim attitudes on organ donation, because they are reluctant donors. A total of 68.5% of Western Muslims agreed with organ donation, but just 39.3% believed it was compatible with Islam (only 12.7% were registered donors). The main constraints cited by Western Muslims were interpretation of religious scripture (76.5%) and advice from local mosque (70.2%). Predictors for organ donation approval among all global Muslims included lesser degree of self-rated religiosity.” (A. Sharif, H. Jawad, P. Nightingale et al., “A quantitative survey of Western Muslim attitudes to solid organ donation”, Transplantation 92(10), Sept. 2011, p. 1108-1114 – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21956200).
(7) “South Asians in the United Kingdom are overrepresented on the organ transplant waiting list but underrepresented as organ donors. 68.4% of respondents agreed with organ donation but only 13.3% were registered organ donors. Muslims were less likely than Hindus or Sikhs to agree with organ donation (59.3% vs. 92.2% vs. 88.7%, p < 0.001) or be registered donors (5.0% vs. 40.3% vs. 25.8%, p < 0.001), respectively. Religious guidance was important for Muslims. Variables independently associated with organ donation approval were (…) more liberal degrees of religious belief." (A. Karim, S, Jandu & A. Sharif, "A survey of South Asian attitudes to organ donation in the United Kingdom", Clinical Transplantation 27(5), Sept.-Oct. 2013, p. 757-763 – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23909569).
(8) "A survey in 2005 in Turkey showed that as many as 21% of doctors cited religious concerns as a reason not to be more proactive about organ donation" (Michael Oliver, Alexander Woywodt, Aimun Ahmed & Imran Saif, "Organ donation, transplantation and religion" (http://ndt.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2010/10/20/ndt.gfq628.full#ref-13).
(9) "Of those participants who had not yet donated organs, the main reason cited for this were (…) Islamic religious beliefs (21.6%). (…) The low level of donation among health care professionals, who should be in the forefront of organ transplantation, and the predominance of ethical and religious reasons for not donating, are incompatible with the present state of medicine." (M. Topbaş, G. Çan, M.A. Çan & Ş. Özgün, "Outmoded attitudes toward organ donation among Turkish health care professionals", Transplantation Proceedings 37(5), June 2005, 1998-2000 – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15964322).
