“Our purpose is for people to go back to their roots. We are Muslim Turks and have been banner-bearers of Islam for a thousand years. We cannot see why there is such sensitivity for Christian traditions and not for our traditions like Hıdrellez, Nevruz and other religious and national holidays.”
One wonders if these Muslims were holding Santa at gunpoint for Islam while Guinean President Alpha Conde was in Ankara assuring the Turks that he knew that Islam was a religion of peace.
“Ultranationalist group hold man dressed as Santa Claus at gunpoint to protest Christmas celebrations,” Hürriyet Daily News, December 29, 2016:
A group of men from the youth group of the ultranationalist Alperen Hearts protested Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in Turkey by holding a man dressed as Santa Claus at gunpoint on Dec. 28 in the Nazilli district of the western province of Aydın….
The provincial head of the Alperen Hearths in Aydın, Burak Yaşar, said they were aiming to “bring people back to their roots.”
“Our purpose is for people to go back to their roots. We are Muslim Turks and have been banner-bearers of Islam for a thousand years. We cannot see why there is such sensitivity for Christian traditions and not for our traditions like Hıdrellez, Nevruz and other religious and national holidays. We organized this protest against Christmas celebrations, reminding people that we should be celebrating our own national holidays instead,” he said.

eur, like I have said before, Turks will be Turks!!! This land of Attaturk is in shambles !!!! The Christian Turks are fleeing in droves, those that are not in jail, and can get out of this up and coming Islamic Nation. Not any longer a secular one… Just like their beautiful Van Cats, crazy by nature.. Beautiful, but nuts… Turks, know what Attaturk wanted for you, secular, not Islamic, tolerance for Christians and others.. So sad that your President is as nuts as they can come!! TO BAD the Turkish military could not follow Attaturks rule, and throw the bum OUT!!

There are few Christians left in Turkey at this point–the Armenian Genocide wiped out most of them a hundred years ago, and the sad remaining remnant has been leaving–or being killed off–ever since.
The entire remaining Christian population in Turkey–including a few brave apostates from Islam–is no more than 160,000–out of a population of 75 million. That would make them about 0.002% of the population there.
But I’m sure you are right–given the increasing Islamization of Turkey under Erdogan, Christians are probably fleeing.

Also, while Attaturk did indeed want to see Islam suppressed, he was fine with pious Muslims slaughtering Christians, The last of the Armenian Genocide took place under his auspices, and he did nothing to stop it.

“Ultranationalists”? Funny thing: Santa Claus, a.k.a, Saint Nicholas, a.k.a., Nikolaos of Myra was a Greek bishop living in what today is Turkey. And he lived in the 4th century, so long before islam came into scene. If they were “ultranationalists” they should be celebrating Saint Nicholas, not decrying him. How about referring to them as what they are: orthodox muslims following a mainstream sect of islam?
eur says
They do not even know who Nicolas was or care about. The Selyucids were Islamized and invaded that part of the world, the present Turks are their descendants, San Nicolas is not part of their past, they came with Islam, they destroyed Byzantium and they turned it into the infected well that today is Turkey … An ancient land full of traces of ancient cultures, grand civilizations, prehistoric settlements … Islam has destroyed everything. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians(They did know who Nicolas was.) were killed by the Kurds pushed by the Sultan … and years later muslims killed a million more Armenians. Nowadays the Turkic ethnic groups are majority where they were not and on top they say that it has always been a Muslim pane. It is an insult to reason, Muslims always doing massacres and denying reality.
The historical and Christian human heritage has disappeared, have made it disappear. The new Muslim generations study adulterated history, is more impregnated with victimhood when the Turks have always been the imperialists … is incredible. The Arab peoples rebelled against the Turks … then the French and the English betrayed them (controversial subject) .. but the Arabs were Bedouins, there were no countries, only tribes, lands dominated by the Turks.

What is needed is a raising of consciousness among the masses in the territories conquered by Arabs and their Turkish or Mogul successors which would lead them to embrace with pride the buried and suppressed achievements of their pre-Islamic ancestors. It may be necessary for Muslims to recognize and mourn for the oppression, enslavement, rape and indignities that one fraction of their ancestors imposed on the greater part, often the overwhelmingly greater part, of their ancestral lineage. Secularism and the political disestablishment of Islam would necessarily follow.

Other secular people cannot easily celebrate Muslim festivals even if they want to. Muslim festivities involve slitting aminal necks in a horrific way, which secular and normal people find it very hard and cruel to practice. Muharram involves inflicting wounds on themselves and on others including children which is also very hard to practice for the normal man.

Actually Muslims showing hate for that fictional character that is the non-entity called Santa Claus is acceptable .For that Santa Claus character is nothing more than a useless worthless third level myth . Likewise, Muslims as some have done in past Christmases cutting the heads off statues of the mythical character is much better then Muslims cutting the heads off real actual human beings. For Muslim to direct hate and malice towards the fiction /myth rather an people in fine.
Moreover, those Muslims who think that the Santa Claus myth ,in any way, represents Christianity are showing their own total ignorance about the essence of Christianity which is centered of Jesus and not that Santa Claus character. In reality that Santa Claus non-entity is really anti-Jesus. So the following essay explains .
This just past Christmas season with many decorations of glitter, one of which is that fictional fantasy non-entity called Santa Claus. Some Christians agree and some don’t that this third level myth is of no value and is even terrible. Only worthless mythical character that distracts and subverts the center of focus from the God -Man Jesus to valueless character of fiction, Santa Claus. For example during the 1960’s when I was eleven I was taken to a Presbyterian church Christmas social. The minister of that church gave no mention of Jesus but had a man come into the room as the guest of honor .He was dressed up and Santa Claus
Furthermore, some Christians have, well spoken, when they had said the Santa Claus is a type of Anti-Christ. Meaning a usurper of Christ or a Christ –like substitute. After all, Jesus taught many good values. This substitute for Jesus, [S.C.] wants little girls and boys to be good and rewards them for it. Also, in the Bible Jesus had great power and performed miracles. Likewise ,this usurper [S.C.] has great magical powers .As to visit with gifts the homes of millions of people in one night. A further example of this myth character being a Jesus usurper who is god- like is the song HERE COMES SANTA CLAUS . one of the lines in that song is “He doesn’t care if your rich or poor he loves you just the same….” What blasphemy .that some like Jesus ! Then there is the other song in which some of the lyrics are “He knows when you are sleeping ,he knows when your awake , he knows when you are bad or good so be good for goodness sake…” Now this clown [S.C.] is all-knowing, as in god-like .
The very worst of all was on Yahoo news ,this month, which ran a tragic story about a small terminally ill child who died in the arms of an actor playing the role of Santa Claus. In other words that was a news story of a child who dies in that that usurper arms [S.C.] and not in the arms of Jesus. In short Christians should feel nothing but disdain and abhorrence about that fictional character Santa Claus.
DFD says
Origin of the Santa Claus:
====================
Originally Wotan/Odin dressed in red coloured furs and drove across the firmament in a slay pulled by reindeer. This happened at the time of the ‘Yul/Yule’. To be exact, on the shortest day of the year. The gifts he distributed were not made by elves, they were made by the slain who enjoyed his company, care and hospitality in the walled halls, Wallhalla. The gifts were for the children of the slain and their widows, later on the poor and the orphans were included. The story was modified, a Christian Saint was used, and thus it helped to spread Christianity among the northern tribes.
Incidentally, Jesus birthday was approximately around March, Gregorian Calendar, according to most experts and historians. It was put onto or into the winter solstice on account that the Roman god Sol was supposed to have died on the shortest day of the year, hence darkest day. He supposedly resurrected himself the next day, and thus the days grew longer since with his resurrection the light returned. Consequently the church put Jesus’ official birthday on the same day – doesn’t need an explanation. There was nothing wrong with that move, it was and is widely accepted that monarchs (Jesus is King) have often official birthdays, whilst the actual birthdays are completely different and unrelated. I have no explanation for this practice.
PS: Why Wotan/Odin? They are identical. The proper pronunciations are: Wohd’n and Oh’dn; phonetically that is. It’s just a question of the Germanic dialects. German and Deutsch are two very different languages.
gravenimage says
Actually, the origin of Santa Claus and Christmas gift giving had a number of points of evolution–Roman Saturnalia, St. Nicholas of Myra, Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, the 19th century writings of Washington Irving and Clement Moore, and even 20th century Coca-Cola artist Haddon Sundblom–all were steps in the development of Santa Claus as we know him today.

Yes, Walter, you have expressed your bizarre antipathy for the benignant figure of Santa Clause before.
Does that mean you’d be fine with Muslims holding a gun to the head of someone dressed up in a red suit before a group of terrified kids?
But even if you loathe the idea of a figure who is kind to children, your assumption that Muslims just threaten those dressed as Santa is mistaken:
“Tajikistan: Muslims shouting ‘infidel’ murder Santa Claus”
https://www.jihadwatch.org/2012/01/tajikistan-muslims-shouting-infidel-murder-santa-claus
Surely you don’t consider the brutal murder of this young man who dressed up to wish his friends a happy new year “acceptable” as well?
And you are further mistaken if you believe that Muslims just hate Santa Claus, and have no animus for Jesus Christ.

My kids were told at a young age that there is no Santa Claus. Mom and dad buy the gifts, but they get a gift for the birthday of Jesus. They know Santa Claus was made up. There are child bibles with drawings and kids were told about Jesus as toddlers.

Well, that’s fine. The idea that it is impossible to worship Jesus and allow kids to innocently enjoy Santa is mistaken, though.

Hey, you are just a little off. St Nick became ‘secularized’ as Santa Claus. Christians know about the real St. Nicholas, but secular people kind of adopted the Santa Claus idea as a kind of fairy tale they tell their kids…. to make Christmas more special. There is no real controversy here….and if you are an atheist and don’t get in to the santa thing you just don’t celebrate Christmas. In our civilization all things are allowed.
Johan Elzinga says
St Nicolas as a symbol of the Christian past was a warrior. St Nicolas today is father Christmas, giving presents to children. I wonder how many centuries it takes before the equivalent heroes of the muslim world will be turned into beneign well-doers giving out presents to children instead of holding guns to the heads of people of other religions.

You got it right there, rbla. What the West needs to do for the pre-Islamic gods is what Stan Lee did for the Norse gods: re-invent them, make them palatable, make them good, but fallible, evil but complex. The pagan gods are everybody’s heritage now. So much can be done with them creatively that can’t be broached with a monotheistic all-good deity.
