The Washington Post, as one would expect from a key outpost of the establishment propaganda media, is appalled: “Never mind that there are fewer than 4,000 Muslims in this country of 10 million people — gun purchases spiked. One shop owner in East Bohemia, a region in the northern center of the Czech Republic, told a local paper that people were scared of a ‘wave of Islamists.'”
Only 4,000 Muslims! Such a small number couldn’t possibly mount a jihad terror attack, now, could they?
This is a common sense measure against a rising threat. The threat is rising because of Europe’s suicidal immigration policies. If Europeans don’t start defending themselves soon, it’s only going to get worse.
“Czech government tells its citizens how to fight terrorists: Shoot them yourselves,” by Amanda Erickson, Washington Post, January 6, 2017:
A couple of months ago, Czech President Milos Zeman made an unusual request: He urged citizens to arm themselves against a possible “super-Holocaust” carried out by Muslim terrorists.
Never mind that there are fewer than 4,000 Muslims in this country of 10 million people — gun purchases spiked. One shop owner in East Bohemia, a region in the northern center of the Czech Republic, told a local paper that people were scared of a “wave of Islamists.”
Now the country’s interior ministry is pushing a constitutional change that would let citizens use guns against terrorists. Proponents say this could save lives if an attack occurs and police are delayed or unable to make their way to the scene. To become law, Parliament must approve the proposal; they’ll vote in the coming months.
The Czech Republic already has some of the most lenient gun policies in Europe. It’s home to about 800,000 registered firearms and 300,000 people with gun licenses. Obtaining a weapon is relatively easy: Residents must be 21, pass a gun knowledge check and have no criminal record. By law, Czechs can use their weapons to protect their property or when in danger, although they need to prove they faced a real threat.
This puts the country at odds with much of Europe, which has long supported much more stringent gun-control measures. In the wake of the 2015 terror attacks in Paris, France pushed the European Union to enact even tougher policies. The European Commission’s initial proposal called for a complete ban on the sale of weapons like Kalashnikovs or AR-15s that are intended primarily for military use. Ammunition magazines would be limited to 20 rounds or less.
The Czech Republic came out hard against the directive. Officials warned — somewhat ominously — that the measure would limit the country’s ability to build “an internal security system” and make it nearly impossible to train army reservists. And a total ban on military-style rifles that can fire large numbers of rounds would make illegal thousands of weapons already owned by Czech citizens, potentially creating a black market for terrorists to exploit. Finland and Germany offered their own reservations; Europe’s pro-gun groups also mobilized against the bill with the support of politicians on the extreme right….

Every chance given, the socialist parties try to get all weapons… already three days after the Paris attack. The request for a law change was handed in. This request was waiting somewhere and juts the date was added. Germany had two mass shootings (Winnenden & Erfurt) red and green screamed for the collection on all guns. But nobody speaks that both had been under the same medication. Sure… tragic and why did they have access to. But this is no reason to scream ‘get all guns’. And sure a terrorist would by his AK legal, register and … 😉

Setting aside the other problems, it seems that the EU is destined to break up simply so that member states can protect themselves.
What could have led the EU to believe the outside world would never attempt to take possession of Europe and its assets? Certainly not the military history of Europe. Could it be related to a 70 year protection by another entity, NATO?

Just try to see it from the Europan standpoint. From the continental perspective only the Sowjets were seen as a possible threat. The world was dominated by Europe. Islam simply didn’t count and was the religion of some backwards subjugated regions in the world. People seem to forget that not that long ago Europeans actually outnumbered Africans.
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
The Washington Post article fails as basic journalism. I read it to find how the gun laws in Czechia will change. At present, “Czechs can use their weapons to protect their property or when in danger, although they need to prove they faced a real threat.” But a proposed constitutional change (whose wording is not reported) “would let citizens use guns against terrorists.” How does that differ from the present law? At present, Czechs may not use their guns to protect themselves or their property from terrorists, only from common criminals? Also, it is not clear from the WaPo article whether Czechs will have to obey EU gun directives, in violation of the Czech constitution.

For a change I am going to have to disagree with all the opinions expressed on this page.
Lax gun laws do not make citizens safe from terrorism or crime or plain loony people.
If that was the case the USA would be the safest country in the world and we see a massacre there almost every week.! I haven’t heard of any incidents in the Czech Republic and the police should be able to handle any from such a small Islamic population.
The answer to the terrorism problem is strict immigration controls and good intelligence work by the police.
Take the UK for example there is no demand at all for the people to be armed and despite the substantial Muslim population and ongoing threat of Islamic terrorism no one believes that carrying a pistol in ones back pocket will save them from a bomb or even knife attack but if guns got into general circulation gun crime would rocket to the levels of America. Being shot by ones next door neighbour over some trivial dispute is not any better than being shot by a mad muslim
I think the love affair Americans have with personal weaponry is delusionary.40,000 murders every year is nothing to be proud of. Its like a Vietnam war every year in terms of casualties.
The manic enthusiasm one hears from some quarters on this site and You Tube for more guns for everyone is like the drug/drink addict who wants everyone else to join their mad obsession and become like them. No thanks guys and I for one would agree to even stricter gun laws in the UK to prevent a person, like we had recently, with a licensed shotgun (a well known scumbag) from shooting dead his wife with it. Check out the comparative statistics. They don’t lie !!!!
lagitane says
First of all, remember that the U.S. is a country of over 300 million people. And most homicides here are not committed with guns. As horrific as they are, mass shootings still affect a small number of people; please do not make it seem as if they are part of every American’s day. Also, please note that Mexico has triple the murder rate of the U.S. with much more restrictive gun laws. And if you say, well, drug trade, etc., then you would have to excuse the U.S., too. The answer is not more guns; but on the other hand, had you been next to the airport shooter, would you not have felt safer had the guy next to you pulled out his gun in self-defense?
Greyhound Fancier says
Most deaths by shooting in the US are suicides. Check the Centers for Disease Control WISQARS database.
Lesley says
Check on the home invasion statistics in the UK as opposed to the USA. Allowing the population to arm itself does create challenges and there casualties, unfortunately, but disarming the population and police is also not without negative consequences.
I wonder how many British children might have been spared being raped by “Asian” men, if they thought they might get shot in the face by a girl’s crazy uncle…
A gun is only as dangerous as the manner in which it is managed, and stupidy will do people in one way or another. If there are no guns for the stupid to mismanage, they will harm themselves and others in myriad other ways; but a well-mannered firearm puts the power to survive and protect in the hands of the common people.
Lesley says
*are casualties, *well-managed. Sorry, my phone :-/

Places in America with more gun laws have more crime–Chicago, DC, bad parts of New Jersey, for example. Places with more gun rights have less crime. Look up work by Dr. John Lott. The data is pretty clear. I live in a heavily-armed area with lots of concealed carry, and anybody who starts randomly attacking people in a public place has a high chance of getting shot quickly. I saw the video of the subway stabber in London–how pathetic that no good civilian was able to pull out a gun snd stop him. It would have ended very differently in my neighborhood.
John Doe says
Agree and disagree. I think it is a matter of education. Look at Swiss gun laws and how little does happen.
But I agree with, there is no need to carry them public in CZ. If something goes terribly wrong it will effect the complete EU again.
Terry says
A good number (-percentage wise and numbers) are drug related; gang related (sometimes the two are connected) , and as someone else said, suicides. Many others are done by criminals-m against citizens.
The reality-yes, there are some (too many) random shootings, sometimes over trivial matters. And occasionally a wacko does a mass shooting- .
The Chicago shootings and homicide rate- numbers are high. But most were concentrated in lower income areas and (as er city) gang and drug related, with innocent people caught in the crossfire.
Go back almost 100 years, in NYC- there were murders committed by a small pick-puncturing (I think) the ear drum, or an area by the ear. (And most were undetected-admittedly, science has improved)- .
In 1948, when Britain partitioned the Asian sub-continent into India and Pakistan, and with strict gun control laws, over 1,000,000 (OVER ONE MILLION) people were killed- WITHOUT BEENFIT OF GUNS. Rocks; tree limbs; fire (arson); etc.
kangi_yotaka says
The average murder rate in the US is 16,000 per year – not 40,000. And that’s all murders, not firearm-specific.
And let’s be honest here. Sure, there are abusers killing their wives, on occasion – that sort of thing. But by and large, the murders are gang- or drug-related. A significant portion of murders are by the undesirable against undesirables … which isn’t exactly a bad thing. It’s not quite as good as Muslims killing Muslims in a Muslim country, but it does seem to be people we don’t want around taking each other out.
On rare occasion, there’s something even better – like the abused wife finally having enough and killing her abusive husband.
Lesley says
The sky high murder rate in Chicago speaks FOR arming the responsible population. When you outlaw guns, the only ones with guns will be the outlaws.

There is about 20 000 muslims in the Czech Republic. Most of them are Bosniaks or from former central Asian USSR countries. Their islamic “heritage” is very weak and heavily influenced by Europe or Russia.
Once again a proof that the far you go from Mohamed, the bearable form of islam you get. In a stark contrast to Christianity.

Gun owners have an inflated sense of self protection because the criminal, mental case or Jihadist generally have the very big advantage of surprise. And unsupervised guns take a terrible toll on children. However none of this is sufficient reason to disarm sane, responsible citizens.
Should the Ft Lauderdale airport shooter been given his gun back? No, IMO.
kangi_yotaka says
davej, the FBI had no legal reason to keep it from him. This is a nation of laws; you can’t take someone’s property. He went to the FBI; they took the weapon. After he was treated, no matter how superficially, and they did an investigation, no matter how superficial, they had to give the weapon back. Your opinion does not trump the Constitution and the law of the land. It would be ideal if the FBI could have seen the future and done something, but they can’t.
A proper hatred of Islam and jihadists is no reason to put the rest of us into a police state.

I have no problem with this Czech policy. It makes sense to me since outfits like the Islamic State have declared war on western countries.Besides, the Czechs undoubtedly remember 1938, when they were sold out by Britain and France in the hope of appeasing Hitler.
It makes some sense to allow citizens some options to deal with this. The recent airport shooting in Fort Lauderdale highlighted the US government’s inability to protect its own citizens.

It seems the Washington Post hasn’t heard of the Schengen Zone – consisting of many European countries (including the Czech Republic, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, et al). Schengen Zone countries don’t ordinarily have any border checks/passport control, except with countries that aren’t in the Schengen Zone.
So, a jihadi from a Mohammedan “no go” area in France, say, could just hop onto a plane, or a train, or a bus, and turn up in Prague to do his “bit” for Allah, with no questions asked when he crosses the border. Jihadis can even stroll or cycle across the German/Czech border, or the Austrian/Czech border – no questions asked.
And any citizen of an EU country can travel to any other EU country with a just a passport.
In other words: How many Mohammedans have free access to the Czech Republic? Answer: (At least) As many Mohammedans who have EU citizenship, or who live in the Schengen Zone (regardless of nationality)…
…i.e. MILLIONS OF THEM!

You can already kill a terrorist or simply anyone who is killing people whether with a firearm or knife – it is just selfdefence. But the most important goal is to secure the firearms law in the hands of the czech government against the gungrabbing European Union. The constitution would say that the legally armed citizens are the question of the inner security of the state thus the EU regulations cannot affect it. And, as a constitutional law, it would bw harder to change in the future. But this is not still sure and all of this can be a populistic gesture before the elections as the pouliticians see this topic as important for the electorate. Even the communist here support it !!! We will se how brave our prime minister (who is very pro EU) will be.
But even in the worse scenario the Ministry of Interior has serious estimations that more than 70% of the prohibited firearms would “get lost”. I think that the experience of the communist dictatorship is now quite useful.

A few observations.
One: closing the borders against ALL further entry of Mohammedans would be the most effective measure.
Two: evicting all Mohammedans currently inside the borders who are not citizens, would be the next step; and surprise-raiding and searching all mosques and razing to the ground all in which incitement or recruitment to jihad, sharia-pushing, and/ or *any* illegal activity was reasonably proven to be taking or have taken place.
Three: rejigging the laws so that any mohammedan currently holding residency or citizenship could be stripped of same and given the boot, should they be discovered to be engaged in sedition/ treason and/ or any other major activity in breach of Czech law and morality (i.e. threaten / attempt to kill an apostate or a ‘blasphemer’? .. get the boot).
Four: as far as homeland self-defence goes… do the Czechs have a compulsory period of formal post-school military training for their youth, like Switzerland, Israel, and Singapore? Because *that* strikes me as a sensible measure for any infidel country to adopt, these days. (Do NOT admit Muslims for this period of training).
It’s all very well to go on about how ordinary citizens with guns who spend a bit of time down on the range or engage in some recreational hunting can defend themselves, etc. BUT: I think that I’d rather that the person next to me on the bus or the train or in the street had had a really *thorough* period of carefully- thought-out formal training such as the Israelis put their people through, *before* that person had hold of a gun. When one hears about a ‘civilian’ taking action, with a gun, in *Israel*, to take down a jihadist, one MUST remember that that ‘civilian’ has most likely gone through months of IDF bootcamp, and if of maturer years, has probably *also* done the requisite periods of Reserve call-up refreshment training, as well.
