Yes. They have a perfect right to read from the Qur’an denying core aspects of Christianity during Christian worship. And free people have a perfect right to hold them in contempt as dhimmi appeasers giving away their own identity, culture and religion for the sake of “deepening friendships” with people who will never really consider them as friends, for they are forbidden to do so by that same Qur’an (5:51).
An update on this story. “Cathedral defends its right to read the Qur’an,” by Antony Bushfield, Premier Christian Radio, January 12, 2017 (thanks to Lookmann):
A Cathedral which faced criticism for reading passages of the Islamic holy book during a service has defended its right to do so.
But asked by the BBC if he knew what the Qur’an said about Jesus, the cathedral’s provost, Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, refused to answer….
A Muslim student, who was invited by the cathedral, read in Arabic from the chapter of Maryam, or Mary, which talks about the birth of Jesus.
The chapter states that Jesus should not be worshipped and that he is not the son of God. Although, it teaches that he is a prophet worthy of reverence.
At the time, the former Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, was quoted by the BBC as saying: “Christians should know what their fellow citizens believe and this can include reading the Koran for themselves, whether in the original or in translation. This is not, however, the same thing as having it read in Church in the context of public worship.
“The authorities of the Scottish Episcopal Church should immediately repudiate this ill-advised invitation and exercise appropriate discipline for those involved.”
In response, provost of the Glasgow cathedral, Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth said: “Such readings have happened a number of times in the past in this and in other churches and have led to deepening friendships locally, to greater awareness of the things we hold in common and to dialogue about the ways in which we differ.”

ECAW says
“Such readings have happened a number of times in the past in this and in other churches”
Yeah, but probably not in other mosques.
ECAW says
I have just heard from a contact of mine who emailed the Scottish Episcopal Church this morning asking whether such readings have in fact taken place in the mosques of the Cathedral’s interfaith dialogue partners and received the following reply which I think rather avoids the question:
“Thank you for your enquiry. This is a matter for St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow, and the Provost, the Very Rev Kelvin Holdsworth, has stated that over the Christmas season, local Muslim friends were invited into the Cathedral, and that the Cathedral has often received similar invitations to join local Muslims for their own festivals. In the course of the Cathedral’s celebrations of the birth of the Saviour, those present listened with interest to the story that Muslims tell of the annunciation of Jesus in the Qur’an. The Provost has noted that such readings have happened a number of times in the past in the Cathedral and in other churches and have led to deepening friendships locally, greater awareness of things held in common and dialogue where there are different ways.
If you have any further enquiries on this matter, please could you send them directly to Provost Holdsworth at office@thecathedral.org.uk.”
Any way, we know who to email now.
Mirren10 says
Thanks for that link, ECAW.
I’ve sent a pointed email, asking the very questions I think you have suggested they deliberately evaded. I won’t hold my breath for a reply ! ?
ECAW says
Yes Mirren, the question was whether any of the cathedral’s partner mosques in interfaith dialogue had allowed readings from the Bible in their services, particularly ones affirming the divinity of Jesus.
Can’t see it happening. That would be shirk, and we know what happens to shirkers don’t we?
I think the Muslima’s reading was clearly a piece of Islamic triumphalism. Something similar happened at the Vatican a few years ago:
“In June 2014 Pope Francis held a Peace Gathering in the Vatican gardens where a priest, a rabbi and an imam prayed for peace in the Holy Land. Along with his prayer for peace the unnamed Palestinian imam added the last 3 verses of sura 2 of the Koran. The last line of 2:286 says:
‘You are our guardian, so make us victorious over the tribe of unbelievers.’
making it plain to Arabic listeners just what his idea of peace was. This is completely in line with orthodox Islamic teaching that peace will ensue only after the defeat and subjugation of all unbelievers.”
Carlos Danger says
Good work. The author of the reply received by your friend is as cowardly as Kelvin is gormless.
Imagine looking to either of them as a faith leader.

It was farcical back then but now, in the wake of Brexit, Trump and the growth of parties specifically anti-islamic, it just raises questions about your mental sanity. Not that I think you’re insane per se – I mean, you’re just paid to spread anti-Western propaganda – but that’s how you come across – a raving lunatic who is demanding people no to believe their lying eyes and ears. One wonders if the congregation has a grasp of just why Jesus had to come in the first place. Why it couldn’t be anyone other than him, the only BEGOTTEN Son of God to be the perfect Sacrificial Lamb that takes the death sentence in our stead for our short fallen state. ALL have sinned and fallen short of God’s standard of perfection. Just from the outset Adam ruined it for all of his descendants. By rebelling against God and eating the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, his bloodline became cursed and condemned to death – eternal separation from God the Father.
.
The good news is that God so loved the world (his creation, mankind), that he gave his only BEGOTTEN Son, that whosoever believes (trusts and has confidence) in him shall not die, but have everlasting life. The tragedy is that VERY FEW people throughout history, and even today have taken this promise of eternal life to heart and put their trust in Jesus. The parable of the wheat and the tares teach us that there will be those who will be in the church who take on the cloak of religion and look like followers of Christ, and even say and do things in his name, but do not know him. When Jesus returns they will be gathered and thrown into the fire to be burned.

Woe to the shepherds who lead people away from Jesus.

Food for thought: If the Creator and Benefactor of humanity, had the power to create by “fiat” and with did so when he implanted in man (male and female) the ability to procreate after their own species, that is, a new human life through the union of man’s seed and the woman’s seed, which idea is totally His, from the start, on what grounds can we deny that the same Creator and Benefactor, would condescend to act upon the seed of a woman (Mary) without the intervention of a man’s seed, in order to bring into the world a human being (known as incarnation) to reconcile the world unto Himself through him, as the Bible states that He did? Is the Creator Himself limited to the use of the normal mechanics of bringing a new human into the world? Why can’t He do precisely what the Bible says He did, in becoming a man using the seed of he woman, as the Bible tells us He did in the beginning, after the transgression of the first man and woman? “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman….” Jesus did not come from the seed of the male, only the seed of the woman. If God was able to create man certainly God is perfectly able to enter into this world as a man, taking His humanity from the seed of the woman. I mean, if He has the ability to “create” the natural means of producing offspring, what prevents Him from doing what He did in the womb of Mary with the benevolent end of reconciling alienated man to Himself? The Muslims are complete imbeciles, spiritually speaking, when they deny the Son of God, saying, How can God have sexual relations with a woman to produce offspring? Does God, the Creator, need to resort to sexual intercourse in order to produce a human being in the womb of a woman? Sexual intimacy is the natural way He established to that end between male and female, but it does not follow that He himself is constrained by that method to bring about the same result. Any way you look at it, it is asinine to think and talk like the Muslims do. To use the idiomatic expression, “they don’t have their head screwed on right!”

Many Christians are confused enough, regardless of which Christian discipline they follow. They are not properly catechized, so they are apt to believe what was read to them. The reading is completely anathema to the message of Jesus Christ. My God, don’t be surprised if the registered parishioner roles and financial support dwindle. The islamists will not support you in ANY way. It is obvious that those who go along with this silliness do not understand the message of the Koran. Mary was the MOTHER OF GOD. Our Christian vibes (KJ, NIV, Douay, etc.) say it clearly when the angel Gabirel announces that You will bear a Son and He shall be called Jesus.” She is always known as the Mother of God. We can refer also to Jesus asking His disciples “Who do YOU say that I am?” And when Peter says “You are the Son of God then that makes it clear: :Mary would then naturally be the Mother of God (i.e.,”Theokotos”) This kind of idiocy would be stopped straightaway. None of these ecumenical affairs were ever held by the Protestants with the Catholics — which would have MADE SENSE> God help us!
Anthony says
With all due respect, Lucia, I cannot agree with your statement that Mary was (or is) the mother of God. That is absolutely absurd!! God has no mother. He is self-existent. Mary was the mother of the “humanity” Jesus, as Jesus in 100% man, and as such, he had a beginning, in her womb, when the Holy Spirit acted on her seed, from which He took his humanity. But, His Deity, His Sonship tp God does not have a beginning, He was with the Father from all eternity past, as the Bible tells us. The designation of Mother of God is foolish, unscriptural, that is, the Bible never refers to Mary as the Mother of God, the mother of Jesus, the man, yes, but that is the extent of it all. The other notion is a medieval construct, rooted in pagan and superstitious ideas.

there is the teaching of the Dual Natures of Christ, i.e. True God/True Man. this may not be the most helpful reference, but it fits the season: John1:14 (ESV).” … And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth ….” [John did see the TRANSFIGURATION and learned of the RESURECTION , seeing the glory (truth) first hand]
except that both natures in Christ Jesus went into and through death, the power of DEATH could not be broken and the REDEMPTION of ALL mankind could not have occurred.
Muhammad (lately contrived; full of lusts and having no compassion), by hearing Jibril conveying the final revelation of the Mother Book, systematically reduced the Anointed of God to mere man. the man, Isa (Jesus) was “made” by the allah god of islam (unknowable; the best of all deceivers) to be PURE … Righteous, something Muhammad never was.
the ignoble koran denies the DIVINITY of Jesus many time. (makes one think that the allah god was jealous.).

Mateen Elass says
Just to be clear, the Greek word used in this context is “Theotokos”, and it literally means “bearer of God,” not “mother of God,” which would be “theomater.” The early Church fathers were careful not to leave any impression that somehow Mary was the progenitor of God almighty. In fact, so careful were they that some wanted to avoid the word “theotokos” altogether, and use only the term “Christotokos” for Mary — the bearer of the Christ into the world. “Mother of God” is a phrase fraught with theological landmines.
Anthony says
I qualify the notion that Mary is the Mother of God as pagan and superstitious, because faith comes by hearing the word of God, in other words, our faith must be grounded in the promise of God, in the Word of God, not the tradition or metaphysical speculations of men; whatever is not grounded on the revelation that God has given to us in His holy word, cannot be called faith, but wishful thinking, at best, or gross superstition, at worst. Faith springs from the promise of God, since faith is “trust” in the promise of God. Therefore, calling Mary the Mother of God is not faith, it cannot be any component of biblical faith as it is not soundly grounded on the Scriptures.
Elaine McMurren says
Anthony, where do you think the Bible came from? It came from the Catholic Church.
somehistory says
Did you get that from your priest?
All of the Bible was written by Jews. The Jews had the first and major part of the Bible, although it was not called that, in their writings from Genesis thru Malachi. Then, when Christ came, His disciples, Matthew, Mark, John, etc., writer of the words that became a part of the Bible, were Jews. It is believed by some that Luke was of Greek origin, but even so, if that is true, he is the only non-Jew writer of the Bible Scripture.
The True God wanted all of mankind who wished to know His will and have His Word. He used many men to transcribe and translate His Laws and Commandments to us. The Catholic church does not deserve the *credit* for God’s Word.
boakai ngombu says
Anthony, with the dual natures understanding, Mary did bear and mother the God/Man, Jesus.

For those so called”Christian” clerics to allow the Qu ‘ran to be read in the building ,such as a cathedral that was constructed as a place to hold Christian worship services in is totally outrageous and outright wrong . Furthermore, the way for a person to discover the truth concerning the nature of Jesus is found in the Bible verse Isaiah 8:20. This instructs “To the law of the testimony. If they do not speak according to the word, it is because there is no light in them.” [N.K.J.V.] In other words, if a religious teacher has teaching that are in contradiction to the Word, the Bible, then that teachers is a false teacher who teaches false doctrines. The Muslim clerics, as the imam and mullahs, teach and speak doctrines about God from the Quran .
As the Quran in 112 teaches “He is God alone: God is the eternal begetteth not…” Likewise, this religious book which is the entire foundation of and for Islam further teaches in 19:35. “It is not befitting to God that He should beget a son.” In great contrast the Bible teaches in John 1:14. “The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory , the glory of the only begotten of the Father ,full of grace and truth.” Likewise John 3:16 teaches “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son… Then just a little further in verse 18 it is written about Jesus Who is “the only begotten Son of God. “ Other places in the Bible further teach that Jesus is the Son of God as in Matthew 16:15:16. Luke 1:35. John 3:36. First John 4:14. 15. 5:14,15. Moreover to be even more clear the Bible teaches that Jesus is the Son of God, Who is God the Father. As found in Matthew 3:16,17. First John 2:22,23. 4:14,15. Of course , it ,very much, needs to made even more specific . The Bible teaches that Jesus is also God the Son. As seen in Hebrew1:8 and First John 5:20. The imams and mullahs as well as the other apologists for Islam will try to “explain” this all away. As in they will try brush off all those Bible verse off by making the claim that the Bible had been corrupted, through time, by Christians and that’s why the Bible reads as it does. That claim they make actually underestimate the Power of God to protect and keep His Word safe and intact ,through time, and away from the corruption of men.
In conclusion ,with the above instruction of the way to find doctrinal truth in Isaiah 8:20 and in the light of the Bible verse provided it may be clearly seen, by all those who are willing to see, that Islam is in terrible doctrinal error and it is therefore a false religion, Proverbs 14:12. John 14;6.

I am not a fan of Muhammad and wonder why Islam is as populated as it is, except that it had to do with geographics and conquests. They always bring up the “Crusades” to vilify Christians and portray them as bloodthirsty villains, but was it not, finally, a necessary defense of Islamic warring campaigns that would have eventually taken over Europe if Austria had not stopped them in (?) 14th century??? Anyway, here we are again, with some not-so-friendly Muslims having skipped into Germany, Austria, Norway and Sweden alongside Syrian refugees and boy has Europe changed – I have watched and read everyday since Fall 2015. Now not so much because its all been done and now the almost daily repercussions. Thanks again for your defense of our wonderful Prince, Counselor and Ever-Lasting King – Jesus Christ.
Walter Sieruk says
First ,for churchmen who claim to be Christians ,for them to allow false teachers to enter a cathedral and then reads from a religious book, the Qu ‘ran that denies the very foundation of Christianity is a sin as well as an absurdity .
Second ,about Muslim clerics, be they living in the UK or the USA or if they are the mullahs of Iran and Afghanistan or the imams of Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia or any other country. All those Muslims clerics are, according to the doctrines of the Bible, Isaiah 8:20. false religious teachers .Meaning false teacher s who teach and indoctrinate the false doctrines of the false religion of Islam into the hearts and minds of others . Such false teachers are described in the Bible ,in Second Peter 2:1. “There were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privately shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.” [K.J.V.]
Therefore, to reply to the many different claims made by the imams and mullahs as well as the other apologists for Islam there is the Christian internet site. It’s http://www.answering-islam.org
In addition, it should be make clear that in the context and meaning of the above Bible verse Second Peter 2:1. The word “destruction” does not mean “loss of being but loss of well-being ,as the destruction of well- being . That is “going to ruin” by ending up and a terrible place of awful suffering which the Bible call hell, Luke 16:19-31.

Very true Kay. Unfortunately most young people aren’t versed in their faith. They are casual, cultural Christians so they think of Jesus as some cool love everyone hippie type if they think of him at all. Or they believe Christians are the embodiment of hate a la the Westboro Baptist Church and the spawn of Fred Phelps (what are they 50 members if that?) so they reject that.
If there is one thing to remember about Jesus even if you see him as a fairy tale, an historical figure, even if you are an agnostic or atheist, it’s this: Jesus told us that we are the children of God and taught us to act like it, treat others as we would like to be treated. He invited everyone in. Christians just celebrated Epiphany which is a message to all.
On the other hand, followers of Allah are not his children, not beloved, not worthy of a covenant by a God who keeps his promises but are slaves of Allah. An Allah who brags about being a deceiver, who is capricious and unknowable. Some proudly have the name Abdullah, which means Slave of Allah. Consider the type of culture that has created: fear, group think, totalitarianism and hatred for those not of your tribe.
