UPDATE: It turns out that Sarsour made that gesture not to signify her own allegiance to the Islamic State, but as a signal of defiance after several Brooklyn College students were photographed making it when Pamela Geller spoke there a couple of years ago. Here is Sarsour’s caption to the photo:
Pamela Geller recently was given a platform to spew hate and misinformation at Brooklyn College, thankfully booed off the stage. After the event, she circulated a picture of Muslim Brooklyn College students holding up their index fingers and associated them with terrorists. As a result of her outrageous claims, these young people have felt targeted and threatened. For me, it meant you are #1, cause you had the courage to stand up to her! I stand in solidarity with them and want them to know that they should never let an evil woman like Geller make them feel less than. Stay proud, stay strong. We got your back. #PamHates #indexfingers#OneLove #UnityAtBC #takeonhate
Here is the photo of the Brooklyn College students:
Sarsour doesn’t explain why these students were not intending to make the Islamic State gesture; she just assumes it. As I said below about Sarsour: “It strains credulity to think that a Muslim as committed and informed as Linda Sarsour in January 2017 would not know its significance as a sign of support for the Islamic State.” It likewise strains credulity that these students did not know the significance of the gesture. A Muslim who is horrified by the Islamic State’s atrocities should be careful at this time not to make this gesture. Those who do not do so are deliberately inviting suspicion.

Linda Sarsour (more about her here) is clearly making the sign of allegiance to the Islamic State in this photo: the upraised index finger. The signal of the index finger held up is, of course, used in myriad contexts, and Muslims in general have used it as a sign of allegiance to tawhid, Islam’s absolute monotheism. However, in recent years it has become very much associated with allegiance to jihad groups, particularly the Islamic State. This signal has been known to be a sign of allegiance to the Islamic State for almost as long as there has been an Islamic State. It has been described as the group’s “ubiquitous hand signal.”
It strains credulity to think that a Muslim as committed and informed as Linda Sarsour in January 2017 would not know its significance as a sign of support for the Islamic State. Her defenders will no doubt heap scorn upon those who note this, and say it’s just a universal sign of being Muslim. To affirm that is to ignore a multitude of photographs of jihadis and news stories that have been published over the last three years. Linda Sarsour, in making this gesture, had to know what she was implying, and how Muslims the world over would understand it. She also could count on the credulity and willful ignorance of her Leftist allies to make sure that she would suffer no damage to her role as a civil rights heroine.
“Organizer For DC Women’s March Against Trump Pictured Flashing the ISIS Sign,” by Joe Hoft, Gateway Pundit, January 23, 2017:
A picture of one of the organizers for the DC Women’s March is making the rounds on social media.
Linda Sansour is seen flashing the ISIS sign.
Hundreds of thousands of mostly female protesters participated in a ‘Women’s March’ in D.C. on Saturday.
