Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Hugh Fitzgerald: “I’m a Muslim — Ask Me Anything,” Answers 24-29

Feb 5, 2017 6:11 pm By Hugh Fitzgerald

Recently I offered 38 questions to ask those carrying signs proclaiming, “I’m A Muslim — Ask Me Anything.” Here are answers to questions twenty-four through twenty-nine.

24. This question goes to the matter of how women are treated in Islam. A Muslim man need only repeat “taaleq, taaleq, taaleq” to divorce — according to the Sharia — one of his wives. If the Muslim Interlocutor (M.I.) claims that this is false, you should respond that Muhammad himself divorced a wife in this manner, as is reported in a hadith of Muslim (9:3493). You can also google “triple-talaq” to find contemporary rulings upholding the practice, and examples of it being used, not 1400 years ago, but today. Divorce for women is far more difficult. They can apply to a Muslim judge (qadi) for a divorce, but they must have a “good reason” for it (mere claims of incompatibility will not do). In one of the “canonical” collections of hadith, Sunan Abu Dawood, Muhammad says: “Any woman who asks her husband for a divorce when it is not absolutely necessary, the fragrance of Paradise will be forbidden to her.”  Clearly the bar for wives seeking divorce is set much higher than that for triple-talaqing husbands.

25. This question again goes to the misogyny in Islam and the status of women. M.I. is likely to claim that Islam improved the lot of Arab women, compared to what they had to endure in pagan times. This is partly true. Islam did away with the practice of (female) infanticide that the pagan Arabs practiced. Another claim M.I. may make is that among the advances for women under Islam was the right to conduct business by themselves, citing Muhammad’s wife Khadija. But this claim is deceptive: Khadija was a successful businesswoman before she became a Muslim, or met Muhammad, so apparently this right for women to conduct business did not require the advent of Islam. M.I. will claim that the Qur’an provided women with explicit rights to inheritance, to property, the obligation to testify in a court of law, and the right to divorce. To which you are ready to respond that women might now have a chance to testify in court, but their testimony in Islam is worth only half that of a man. Quran 2:282: “And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not found then a man and two women.”

And while women were able to inherit property, they inherited only half of what a male relative would inherit: “The male shall have the equal of the portion of two females” (4:11). While women now had the right to divorce, it was, and is, under Shari’a, far easier for the Muslim man to obtain a divorce. And of course men could have plural wives, but a wife only one husband. And men had the right to beat their wives if they were disobedient. Having noted all this, you want to leave your listeners with Muhammad’s explicit description of women as inferior to men. The most effective quote to use for this is Sahih Bukhari (6:301): “[Muhammad] said, ‘Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?’ They replied in the affirmative. He said, ‘This is the deficiency in her intelligence.’“

26.Islam arose among the Arabs in Mecca, and it is toward Mecca, a city in the Hejaz, that Muslims everywhere turn in prayer. Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, the Perfect Man and Model of Conduct, was a 7th century Arab with the mores of his time and place. The only version of the Qur’an deemed fully accurate is that in Arabic. Among Muslims, the Arabs enjoy the permanent prestige of having been the ones to bring the Qur’an to the world, and in their language. This matter is raised as well in two other questions, #19 and #34. The charge that Islam is a vehicle of Arab supremacism cannot be refuted, and the experience of informants who have attended mosque open houses suggests that once made, it makes a deep impression on listeners, including not just Infidels but even some non-Arab Muslims who previously had never thought of Islam in such terms.

27. Just a simple historical question, or so it may seem. Muhammad died in 632. Arab armies then swept from the Hejaz, through Egypt and across North Africa, and then crossed into and conquered the Iberian Peninsula by 711, that is, in the span of 80 years. The M.I. might claim that it was the obvious Truth of Islam that explained its rapid spread, not military force. You will concede that there have been a very few places where Islam did spread without the aid of a conquering army – such as in the East Indies, where the conversion of local rulers in Java and Sumatra to Islam meant the adoption of the faith by those they ruled, on the well-known principle of cuius regio, eius religio (“whose realm, his religion”), or today, where demographic conquest by Muslim migrants, assisted by their unwitting victims in Europe, is the chief means for spreading Islam. But this question is designed to note that Islam was spread mainly by armies, not only those that made their way from the Hejaz all the way to and up through the Iberian Peninsula (until stopped outside Poitiers by Charles Martel), but also those Muslim armies that conquered much of the Middle East, including Iran and Syria and Palestine, or other armies that seized much of India and Afghanistan. You want to make sure that the overwhelming role of violence in the spread of early Islam is understood by the onlookers. It was not, as Muslim apologists claim, the undeniable truth of Islam that mainly caused its spread, but the scimitars of its adherents.

28. In a well-known hadith, Muhammad says he will not enter a home where there are “dogs and pictures.” By “pictures” he is held to have meant all depictions of living creatures, so that statues as well as portraiture are considered haram. There are also many other hadith against images of animate beings. The Bamiyan Buddhas were statues that had escaped destruction not because Muslims had granted them some kind of special dispensation, but because until 2001, Muslims had lacked the wherewithal to destroy them. If M.I. claims that the fact that the Bamiyan Buddhas had not been destroyed long ago shows that it was not a religious but a political matter (as if a clear distinction could be made in Islam), with the Taliban’s Mullah Omar supposedly claiming that he was so angered that foreigners were willing to spend money to repair the Buddhas while Afghans were starving that he decided to destroy them, you can point to the consensus of the 400 Afghan clerics who said that the statues violated Islamic law. And remind M.I. – and those listening in — that just as many thousands of statues, stupas, and temples (Buddhist and Hindu) had been destroyed over many centuries all over present-day Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, it was now the turn of the Bamiyan Buddhas, because the Taliban’s explosives proved equal to the appalling task. Even so, it took several weeks of diabolically dedicated dynamiting to thoroughly destroy the Buddhas. You have hereby introduced the theme of Islamic destruction of the world’s artistic heritage, over 1400 years, and also the day before yesterday, with the Islamic State’s destruction of the Temple of Bel (a Mesopotamian monument) and the Roman theatre in Palmyra. Wherever Muslims can destroy non-Muslim heritage sites, it seems they will. From their point of view, why should they be forced to endure reminders of any civilization other than the only one that counts, that of Islam?

29. This question raises the matter of the extreme violence of Muslims in defending the image of Muhammad. In the church of San Petronio in Bologna, a fresco by Giovanni da Modena from 1410 depicts the scene described in Dante’s Inferno, Canto 28, where Muhammad — a sower of discord — is in Hell, pulling at his own entrails. You might even quote Dante as a way of overwhelming your Muslim opponent: «Or vedi com’io mi dilacco! / vedi come storpiato è Mäometto!» (vv. 30-31), which means: “See how I tear myself open! See how maimed Muhammad is!” The Muslim plotters considered this precious fresco, 600 years old, as blasphemous, and consequently believed they had a perfect right to blow up the church, together with the offending fresco. You should be ready to note that although the plot was discovered in time, the fresco now has a grate in front of it, and visitors must view the fresco from a greater distance, so that in its dark side altar it is now hardly visible. A part of Europe’s artistic heritage has now, thanks to Muslim threats, even if present, has been effectively rendered invisible. The point being made is that with millions of Muslims now in Europe, the threat to the West’s artistic heritage is very great now, and can only increase pari passu with the increase in the Muslim population.

The Qur’an and Muhammad’s Sunnah are overflowing with violent exhortations and evil instructions that Muslims are expected to act upon. We ex-Muslims know that Islam ought to be abandoned.

Absolutely correct but why can’t our leaders see this. Even Trump was quoted as saying his travel restrictions were not about religion but about terrorism. Well what does he think inspires this terrorism?. The Islamic doctrines referred to in the link provided and in all the writings handed down from ignorant barbaric times which have or should have no value to today’s thinking person. Trouble is even in enlightened countries the gullible and lazy minds want a set of instructions of dubious origin going back to the bronze age to provide “the opium of the people” despite the vast amount of true knowledge now available to all

I think he more or less had to say it was not about religion but about terror because religious freedom forms part of the constitution.

For debate purposes, fine… Islam vs Women. Much debatable material on hand.
However, I don’t give a damn about Muslim women.
In the Western world, women fought hard and long for their freedoms. In Islam world, it is up to them to help themselves and not us to help them. They will only spit on us.

This talk about Muhammad putting a stop to female infanticide on the basis of moral considerations is phony. After all, he advised his rapist companions that when they rape conquered females, that they shouldn’t bother about whether there will be issues from such conquest rapes–or not. If there is life resulting from a rape, let it be, as Muhammad advised.

There was no advice from Muhammad that female war captives should not be raped. Qur’an 33:50, for example.

Then, of course, the flip side of infanticide is fully embraced by the West’s Liberal lovers of Islam. Late term abortion is indeed infanticide. And under the feminist banner of a “woman’s right to choose” women do have the right to abort if the fetus is not of the right gender.

It is better not to talk to a Muslim. One can’t convince them that Allah is no god and Jesus is Lord. They belong to a pre-historic cult.

As noted, this is not necessarily intended to convince the Mohammedan in question of anything, but instead to educate any listening Infidels of the truth about Islam–and of how many Muslims lie about it.

That being said, many Muslims *have* reconsidered their appalling faith after Infidels–especially Christians–have questioned them about Islam.

Throwing a spanner into the works of all these Ask-A-Muslim-Anything, Meet-Your-Muslim-Neighbor, Mosque Outreach events, instead of allowing the suave presentation, all taqiyya-and-tu-quoque,to proceed as planned, right up to the baklava that beckons at the end of the meretricious presentation, is worth doing –I’ve been privy to a few examples of this — and as you correctly note (there has been some confusion about the intended audience, a confusion I had not foreseen) the real audience are your fellow Infidels, not the Muslims who know perfectly well the answers, and know exactly why you are asking those questions, and are not amused.

http://corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp?chapter=2&verse=282 makes it clear the Quran 2:282 deals with how to draft contracts for debt repayment (and the payment of interest?). The contract must be dictated by the debtor, taken down in writing by a scribe, and witnessed by two of the debtor’s men (employees? slaves?) or one man and two women chosen by the debtor. Why two? “So that if one of the two errs, the second of the two may remind the other.” How are disagreements among these witnesses decided? What if the two male witnesses disagree? What if the two female witnesses agree with each other but disagree with the one male witness? And why does the debtor, not the creditor, get to decide who the witnesses shall be?

In Bukhari 6:301 ( http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/quran/bukhari/006-sbt.htm#001.006.301 ), Muhammad and some unidentified women agree that “the evidence of two women [is] equal to the witness of one man”, but Quran 2:282 doesn’t say so. What is the source of this assertion, and what does it even mean? In a sharia court, must the qadi do fact-finding by a sex-weighted average of the testimony of all the witnesses?

Is there some online Qadi Training Manual that answers these questions?

    Great answers, Hugh–to important questions.

For #29, I would add that Muslims are destroying art all over the world–not just the terrible case of the Bamiyan Buddhas. Muslims destroyed virtually the entire Buddhist and Hindu heritage of the Maldives, have destroyed even Islamic sites in places like Mali and Saudi Arabia, have destroyed ancient artifacts in the Islamic State, and that the Muslim who attacked police at the Louvre had a machete and paint with him–no doubt intended to destroy art if he had been allowed to enter that august museum.

Long but useful article. Dedicated to the useful idiots of the West who still romantically and ignorantly view Russia as “Bastion of Cristianity”.

…This enables the Kremlin to cultivate its international relations with Muslim countries, while parading itself as uncompromising in its fight against Islamist violence. In his speech of 2009 mentioned above, Medvedev announced that, owing to its large Muslim population, “Russia does not need to seek friendship with the Muslim world: Our country is an organic part of this world.”

Thank you Hugh and fellow commentators.

I keep a file of these questions and answers, plus other good telling comments, to refresh myself at a later date.

I have read koran, hadiths and sira, and sort of familiar with many of the arguments during the past 10 years.

Your questions are like doing a test, and makes me revise and update, and makes things more lucid in my mind,
When I have discussed and debated through the years, with others, again it is another learning curve.
That also makes one think and understand more so as to then how to relay the information.
Not to be over the top, or overload, as “less can be more” digestible, and to be effective and make people to be more curious to know a bit more, at another time.
There is very much a curiousness about islam though there can be a difficulty of getting past the benign peace concept. Still in “small bites” many are starting to get it.
I have always endeavored to relate to their level and experience in life,

Practice does sharpen the mind, and even making comments in these forums makes one’s mind work in detailing and understanding these problems, and hopefully a better communicator to others.

The tide is slowly turning, albeit slowly, as some people do not trust the politicians so much now, so want more direct truth of islam.

I also ask them to seek more knowledge of this ideology, and how to read the koran, considering abrogation and Meccan and Medina verses, plus other sources.

There are 5 English translations that are recognized by islam. They do seem to be in old English, but still very understandable.
It seems to add to a ‘gravitas’ in reading it, or in quoting the verses. Sort of less misunderstanding of the interpretations and before PC came in vogue.

A tedious book to read, can be done in an afternoon.
Do find the chronological order of the koran so you can see how it divides, like an old testament and new testament. Sort of helps with the flow to make some sense of things.

Theme 3. UNBELIEVERS – Unbelievers are bad, guilty and dangerous to the believers. They, …………….and those who disobey Allah, are punished in this life then they go to hell.

Theme 4. JIHAD – It is the duty of believers to spread Islam by jihad (fighting/striving in …………. …Allah’s way).

The Koran contains so much egregiously stupid, unscientific and historically incorrect information that it COULD NOT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY A GOD. To get around the stupidity of the Koran, Muslim apologists study a lifetime to explain away the obvious bone-headed errors In the Koran.

The Koran says a number of times that it is ‘clear’ (mubeen), however, it is not ‘clear’, but stupid and erroneous. Muslim apologists imply by explaining away Allah’s errors that the Koran is not ‘clear’, but extremely confusing. If Allah is confusing and not ‘clear’ then the Koran makes a false claim. If Allah is confusing and must be explained endlessly… when he thinks his communication is ‘clear’… Allah is deluded and Allah is the WORST of all communicators. Muslim apologists actually imply that Allah CANNOT COMMUNICATE CLEARLY because Allah requires the apologists to ‘CLARIFY’ his CONFUSING and STUPIDLY ERRONEOUS statements in the Koran. If Allah is so deluded, then he is not a ‘god’ and Islam is false.

Atlantic Monthly, January 1999, describes (credibly) the finding of manuscripts dating to the 9th century which show that the koran was rewritten, making it more virulent than even mo had imagined. Islam is a cult, not a religion. It fails the question of “What is a religion?” It is not entitled to the protections courteously afforded to religions by civilized societies. Note especially that muslims do not extend such protections to actual religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, etc. Instead of deference to islam, it needs to be challenged. Specifically, legal authority needs to require islam’s so-called leaders to prove that mosques, madras, etc., are entitled to courtesies extended to religion. Further, to be extended these courtesies, in any event, they need to acknowledge that sharia law is not applicable in any situation where a prevailing societal law already exists. There is something else that can be done to demolish this cult. That is to show that when life stops for a muslim, there are no “virgins” awaiting them. (BTW, what do these cultists think happen to women who die?) I think one way to show this is to clinically terminate life of many volunteers by chilling in a lab, then when brain and heart function are stopped, to attempt to resuscitate. If it works, then the survivors can be interviewed in a way to prevent lying, about what they saw, “felt” or experienced during their dead time. Who knows? If their anwers are credible, islam may win new adherents. On the other hand, it could result in a billion or so of new aposates.
