Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

McMaster and Gorka: Understanding or Misunderstanding Islam?

Feb 27, 2017 11:59 am By Brian Thomas

There are two fundamental ways to view Islam in the West, and it is now clear those who hold to the “Islam is a religion of peace” view, which has held sway over the affairs of the West for so long, are fighting a desperate rear-guard action to remain in charge following Trump’s rise to power.

As we watch the public pronouncements and the actions of the new administration, we have to carefully determine which path administration officials are on.

It’s pretty clear that Trump himself, throughout his campaign and with his first appointments, completely rejects the old view of Muslims falling prey to a mass misunderstanding of a peaceful Islam. Michael Flynn rejected this view; that was clear from his many public pronouncements. Having him brought down by the shady leaking of supposedly sensitive gathered intelligence was a blow.

Robert Spencer quoted from the New York Times’ latest piece on Flynn’s replacement as national security adviser, General H. R. McMaster. As ever, to confirm what General McMaster said to the first “all hands” staff meeting of the National Security Council, the New York Times quotes its most reliable government sources by citing “people who were in the meeting” and noting what “several officials said.” Ah yes, those anonymous sources are so busy. According to those anonymous sources and the agenda of the New York Times, therefore, General McMaster is continuing to reaffirm the “Islam is a religion of peace” doctrine. Robert is correct to be suspicious about McMaster’s approach to Islam until we see what practical effect he has in his role.

We also have Dr Sebastian Gorka. Any reasonable reading of his book Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War would place him over toward the Trump and Flynn side regarding the underlying ideology of Islam with deep suspicion. That paints a big target on Dr Gorka. The first shot came from Eli Clifton writing on an obscure blog concerning an old Hungarian medal Dr Gorka wore, which Clifton claimed was evidence of antisemitism from Gorka. An interesting claim from Clifton, who has written for the notorious Jew-hating site, Electronic Intifada. That charge was easily debunked, so a new charge was needed.

Up to the plate steps the New York Times, and this time they’re going for the jugular with the charge that Gorka is an “ill-informed Islamophobe”:

The new point man for the Trump administration’s counter-jihadist team is Sebastian Gorka, an itinerant instructor in the doctrine of irregular warfare and former national security editor at Breitbart. Stephen K. Bannon and Stephen Miller, the chief commissars of the Trump White House, have framed Islam as an enemy ideology and predicted a historic clash of civilizations. Mr. Gorka, who has been appointed deputy assistant to the president, is the expert they have empowered to translate their prediction into national strategy.

Mr. Gorka was born and raised in Britain, the son of Hungarian émigrés. As a political consultant in post-Communist Hungary, he acquired a doctorate and involved himself with ultranationalist politics. He later moved to the United States and became a citizen five years ago, while building a career moderating military seminars and establishing a reputation as an ill-informed Islamophobe. (He has responded to such claims by stating that he has read the Quran in translation.)

Interestingly, this is what Dr Gorka says about the Qur’an in his book. He advises a critical review of the Qur’an, especially with regard to the pre- and post-Medina chapters, which is advice that I wholeheartedly endorse:

First, since September 11, 2001, every American should own a Koran. There are no excuses. Every day you can switch on the television or the radio or open a newspaper and hear or read pronouncements about “what Islam is” and “what the Koran says.” Most of it is wrong— very wrong. You owe it to yourself, your family, and all the Americans killed on 9/ 11 and since to know the truth. Do not take anyone’s word for it. Find out for yourself by reading the actual Koran. One of the most reliable and recognized versions is the The Holy Qur’an: Text, Translation and Commentary translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, available at Amazon.com.

Once you have a Koran and start to read it, take care to note the enormous differences between the half reportedly communicated to Mohammed in the beginning in Mecca, when he was weak and without followers, and the latter half, allegedly written after he returned from Medina with thousands of followers, the leader of a mighty military force. It is the post-Medina chapters of the Koran that are naturally favored by groups like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State. They are not in fact “perverting” religious texts but skillfully applying those alleged revelations that best support their cause.

Back to the New York Times hit piece:

In 2015, he caught Donald Trump’s eye, perhaps appealing to someone who had no government experience by declaring everything done by the government to be idiotic. Most notably, Mr. Gorka derides the notion that Islamic militancy might reflect worldly grievances, like poor governance, repression, poverty and war. “This is the famous approach that says it is all so nuanced and complicated,” Mr. Gorka recently told The Washington Post. “This is what I completely jettison.”

For him, the violence emanates from the “martial language” of the Quran, which has hard-wired aggression into Islam. Like the recently fired national security adviser Michael T. Flynn and Mr. Bannon and Mr. Miller, the architects of the ill-conceived executive order barring the entry of citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, Mr. Gorka sees Islam as the problem, rather than the uses to which Islam has been put by violent extremists. The contrast between them and the policy makers of the previous three presidential administrations could not be clearer: For their predecessors, the key has been to fight terrorists, not assault an Abrahamic religion.

They bring up the “ill conceived executive order.” It is still blocked on legal grounds, mostly a function of the ridiculously political courts that blocked it, and without reference to the stated reasons for the order, which I still consider to be transformative and indicative of the Trump administration’s significant break from the past.

The gist of Mr. Gorka’s worldview is that the United States is locked in an ideological conflict with “radical Islam.” A report he wrote with his wife assesses that “it is the key failing of U.S. efforts to fight terrorism that we have not understood the importance of ideology.” He attributes this failure to a “systematic subversion of the national security establishment under the banner of inclusivity, cultural awareness and political correctness.”

This is a supremely uninformed and ahistoric claim, as evidence demonstrates. Consider the raft of recently declassified United States government assessments of Islamic militancy going back nearly 40 years. The C.I.A. has produced in-depth analyses of Sunni radicalization dating to 1979, when Wahhabi messianists seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

It’s hard to know why C.I.A. assessments from 40 years ago are proof of anything very much. In his book, Dr Gorka refers to 1979 as the “Annus horribilis,” the point at which modern jihad went global. He’s pretty clear to trace the ideology of modern Islamic terror back further, and he does point out the inherent calls to violence and the specific reasons why Mohammed was not successful as a leader until his Islam became a doctrine of conquest and war. In his chapter on 1979, he lays out the three massively important events that year which boosted global jihad: the Iranian revolution, the siege of Mecca and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The Afghanistan invasion, particularly, set the scene for one of global jihad’s greatest triumphs: the defeat of the Soviets, in which it was aided by the C.I.A.

The rest of the New York Times hit piece continues with an optimistic read-out of America’s supposedly huge success in dealing with the growing number of people who continue to misunderstand their peaceful “Abrahamic religion” and insist on blowing themselves and others up so regularly.

Who are we to believe is running the new policies of the Trump Administration when it comes to tackling terrorists who profess so strongly to be acting in the name of their Islamic faith? Trump, Gorka, Bannon and others, or General McMaster, as told to the New York Times by “people who were in the meeting” and “several officials”?

Gorka has made numerous television appearances since his appointment, but spoken relatively little about the finer details of defeating jihad. This is probably because the opposition (media) is unable to relate to the finer points of what he thinks.

At CPAC, Gorka appeared on a panel that was ultimately uninspiring, possibly because of way too much input from Zuhdi Jasser and other wonkish advisors and army men who kept returning to an endless quest for a reformed, peaceful and moderate Islam. For the most part, Gorka stuck to ideas familiar from his book, centered around the completely different and incompatible value systems of Islam and the Judeo-Christian world. However, he made one statement, coming back from something Jasser said, about the US not being at war with Islam, and citing the example of the Jordanian pilot who was tortured in an ISIS video. Gorka said: “This idea that we’re at war with Islam is really fallacious. Because what’s the religion of the guy in a cage who was burnt alive. He’s not a Baptist. He’s not a Hindu. He’s not an Episcopalian.” That’s a backward step. The pilot was killed by Muslims because they considered him to be an apostate for waging war against them. For Gorka, who often refers back to the Cold War, there is still some reluctance to firmly classify Islamic teachings as a root issue in public.

There is another aspect of the Cold War period that Sebastian Gorka refers to that is in need of some evaluation. He is entirely correct in comparing the fight against Marxist communism of that period to the present-day fight with Islamic jihad, but he should avoid being blindsided by the thinking of most Cold Warriors. These heroic patriots were hindered in their goal of establishing real liberty in Europe, for throughout the Cold War era, the fight was exclusively focused on the Marxist communism being spread by the USSR. Never was the European states’ so-called “democratic socialism” to be portrayed in a negative light, though socialism was the key identifying marker in Marxist theory. “Socialism light” was to be looked at through the fingers; the Cold Warriors couldn’t afford to anger their European allies.

We simply can’t afford the same mentality with Islam. Civilizational (or stealth) jihad is the key element driving Islam forward; violence is but a means in achieving that aim. Saying that we are at war with “radical Islam,” or that the terrorists are un-Islamic, in order not to offend our Muslim allies, brings us to the same dilemma faced by these Cold Warriors: yes, the Marxist empire imploded, but socialism still lives on in all of its destructive forms. We are still fighting it to this day.

We’re watching a titanic struggle for the future of the United States and the free world. If the U.S. can take a sane lead, perhaps Europe can be saved. One thing is for sure: the old guard and the New York Times will be running a fierce campaign of opposition to anyone who tells the truth.

Perhaps confused Progressives and others should start reading Muhammad’s biography. It is much more accessible than the other doctrinal texts. To understand the motivations of Muhammadans, one has to understand Muhammad.

Agreeing with berserker. The ‘SIRA’ is Mohammed’s official biography and NOTHING can be known about Mohammed without it, since it is the only source of a timeline for Mohammed’s life. Even that timeline is suspect, though, since it is unaware of ‘LEAP MONTHS’ which were added to the pagan lunar calendar when it got about a month out of whack. The ‘Sira’ is not pure history… it is propaganda. BUT WHAT PROPAGANDA! It depicts Mohammed, not as a prince of peace, but as a vicious, unforgiving, emotionless warlord … someone who somewhat resembled Stalin in his lack of empathy for his victims.

No one who read the Sira would mistake Islam for a religion of peace.

        Indeed.

What’s more, according to reliable hadith, the “Messenger of Allah,” a man, clearly well familiar with the camel, he stated of jihad and its place in Islam, “’‘Jihad is the hump (the most prominent) of deeds.’” (at-Tirmidhi)

Therefore, regarding that statement and so too the framework of the mentioned camel, take the hump out of the camel, what happens?

You kill the camel. You end its life, the camel falls hump-less and lifeless to the ground.

So it is with jihad—the hump, the pinnacle, of Islam—in Islam. And the alleged “Messenger of Allah” knew that well, thus both preached and practiced jihad like-manneredly.

The fact that an individual with the resume of Mohammed would be considered the exemplar for any religion should give pause to anyone familiar with Mo’s horrifying behaviors.

A good biography of Mohammed should be enough to convince anyone that he could not have been a prophet of anyone but Satan, and that his example only leads to sin and misery.

Robert Spencer’s book, “The Truth About Muhammad,” is an excellent book to learn about the beginning of Islam and the Warlord Mo. Mo was a very violent man and he made many statements about waging jihad against the infidel. A few are below.

“I will cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers, so strike [them] upon the necks [behead them] and strike from them every fingertip’” (Koran 8:12).
“Fight those among the People of the Book [Christians and Jews] who do not believe in Allah nor the Last Day, who do not forbid what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not embrace the religion of truth [Islam], until they pay the jizya with willing submissiveness and feel themselves utterly subdued” (Koran 9:29).
“Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever you find them—seize them, besiege them, and make ready to ambush them!” (Koran 9:5).
“Fighting has been enjoined upon you [Muslims] while it is hateful to you” (Koran 2:216).

I have heard Dr. Gorka lecture and agree with his assessment that Islam is not only our ENEMY, but it’s also the EVIL of our Time! Sadly, too many of our Liberals and Conservative alike think that Islam is nothing to fear and that it is a “religion of peace,” something that it is NOT, nor ever will be.

Most liberals believe the myth that Islam is a religion of peace, or that it is no worse than any other religion, which we in the know understand that both statements are false. Islam is a religion of war and it is by far the worst religion in the world today. Islam is truly an evil religion that allows its followers to rape, assault, kill, and enslave infidels and to molest little girls.

If McMaster DOES NOT UNDERSTAND the jihad doctrine … and it appears that he does not … McMaster SHOULD NOT remain in this post.

This KEY FAILURE to understand PERFECTLY the JIHAD DOCTRINE totally disqualifies McMaster for a leadership role in such an important task as DESTROYING JIHAD.

It appears that McMaster has not mastered the Koran, the Sira, the hadiths, Sharia law and the tafsirs (canonical commentaries) … and yet, PREPOSTEROUSLY, he presents himself as an EXPERT on Islam… so he is UNQUALIFIED and should be replaced in the quickest way possible.

    • Stan Lee says

      Feb 27, 2017 at 2:06 pm

After hearing former President George Bush’s “take” concerning Islam a statement which he repeats as during his presidency, it is obvious that he and Gen. McMaster are in agreement concerning Islam as “a religion of peace.” As Bush never understood it, calling for “freedom of religion” as a cover-all to include Islam, McMaster is of the same politically correct school.

I agree that even though McMaster is highly recommended by other retired Generals, he misses the real significance of Islam behind the PC screen of it being “a religion of peace.” That leaves us strictly in a limited reactive strategy which allows that “religion of peace” as much latitude as it can take under the circumstances of the appointed General operators in Washington, DC consider as infallable. He will be late to any understanding of the scheming Islam.

In order to respond to Islam’s war upon all non-Muslims, including the United States, Islam’s #1 target in this world, the military man holding his present post in the Trump administration is more than a step down from General Flynn, who had a more realistic understanding of Islam than McMaster does.

President Trump was acting upon advice of other General officers (apparently) and though McMaster may have an excellent military record, the question of Islam as the enemy to our homeland may never have been approached until recent when McMaster stated his understanding, which is bound to become a problem for the U.S.A..
I think he was a hasty choice because the pressure grew upon Flynn and the President sought a replacement after two other Generals declined the post. It would have been better had the administration not rushed to fill the Defense spot so quickly.

According to other Generals interviewed on Fox News, McMaster is rated as an “excellent” officer who will not be moved about his opinions once he has made his choice. That may work in dealing in a shooting war with Afghan insurgents, but now McMaster is in a more nuanced situation and his belief of Islam as a “religion of peace” is his stumbling block. We cannot afford such a misunderstanding on his part. This must be qualified by the administration with no punches pulled.

I agree with Mortimer’s assessment, as far as I am concerned McMaster will have to be replaced ASAP, his “Religion of Peace” stand would inhibit what actions must be taken concerning Islam’s true intentions which are one and the same as those of “the religion of peace.”

And look at was an unmitigated disaster Bush was. The terrible waste of treasure and blood on an Islamic country that was was probably half way down the list of 50 Islamic countries in order of enemies. Then to out do his blunder with the greatest blunder of all, to nation build in two countries that didn’t want his Jeffersonian democracy but only Islamic law. Probably the biggest failure of American foreign policy, in the history of America.

Very costly in lives and resources. We were naive and stupid civilians, led by naive and blind military strategists. I hope we don’t follow that path again. I haven’t read Gorka’s book but I was thoroughly disenchanted with his appearance at CPAC. He let Mike Waltz and Zuhdi Jasser spew their drivel without challenge. He said we are not at war with islam. He also made a ludicrous analogy of defeating Islamic jihad to Reagan defeating the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was imploding anyway. Reagan just gave it a push. Islamic jihad, on the other hand, is growing and gaining strength. Frankly, I think the guy in the audience who shouted “impossible” would have been a better speaker than Gorka was.

The very last thing we need, now, is to position military officers loyal to Barry (who remain willfully blinded to the terrorist-ridden tentacles of Islamic Ideology) in positions of authority and responsibility in a time of war.

I have no idea as to who vetted this McMaster character. But, clearly, they missed it.

President Trump would be well advised to fix this ill-conceived appointment as soon as possible. Otherwise, our nation will deeply regret what follows.

‘Useful infidels’ (who personify the ‘Ostrich Complex’) must be carefully scrutinized themselves, not enabled to intentionally mislead our president about matters they, clearly, know little or nothing about.

That statement DOES indicate a certain degree of ignorance upon Dr Gorka’s part, in that he fails to mention Islam’s ‘doctrine of abrogation’ which is accepted by every major Islamic school. That doctrine resolves the earlier peaceful Meccan passages with the later, Median passages. The doctrine asserts that what is last said is what counts. Which means that ‘radical’ Islamists are theologically correct. That they hold the theological high ground. Thus it is not possible to be a devout Muslim while also rejecting Allah’s commands to do violence upon the infidel.

It’s ironic that the amount one needs to know to understand the real nature of Islam is really not that great: the character and behaviour of Muhammad; the Meccan and Medinan phases of Muhammad’s career; the 14 centuries of Muslim barbarism that are consistent with Muhammad’s example and the doctrines derived from his behaviour and the so-called “revelations”. Once you know these easily discoverable things you see it for what it is but even intellectual heavyweights like McMasters find this too difficult.

There are many comments that could be made here, I will confine my self to two.
The Qu’ran didn’t come from China or… Brazil, it was written in what is now Saudi Arabia 1,800 years ago and must be seen as a product of the time and place of it’s origin. It is very easy to, with our eyes in 2017, to read right over the top of it and misunderstand completely.
Second- why the conflict that is going on Today. There are two reasons. The first is- look at the advance in communications- The Web, Cell phones, which are ubiquitous and transmit pictures as well as text, Social Media- the Twitters, Facebooks, Redit, Snapchats et. al. What this means is- that the world has shrunk-considerably and people who never could interact at all now can easily.
The second is Mass Migration, very particularly ( and disasterally) in Europe, found people with absolutely incompatible views were, it turns out, living down the block or right next door. The result is what you see.
You do need to understand where these people came from. The best record I an give you is a book about Sharia. It is titled Cruel and Unusual Punishment and written by Nonie Darwish. This articulate woman lived in Egypt for the first thirty years of her life. She is now and American. The first half of the book is devoted to the history of how and why this Muslim culture came from. Why are they the way they are.
The first half is where your understanding is going to take a leap.

Understanding Islam ? OK ., the following is one good way to understand Islam.
What is called “Radical Islamic Terrorism” , is very much based on religion. The religion of Islam For Islam’s “holy book” the Qur ‘an [the Koran] instructs on the use of violence and killing for the advancement of Islam. As found in ,for example 2:191. 4:89. 5:33. 9:5,111,123. 47:4. Furthermore, it may be illustrated that if Islam is represented as a tree then the fruits then the fruits of that tree are the many brutal, violent and deadly jihad terror entities. Such as ISIS, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, al Shabaab , Hamas, Hezbollah, P.I.J. etc. With this statement, the Wisdom of the teachings of Jesus may, very much, apply to this subject. For Jesus taught “Ye do know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” After saying this Jesus told them what He told them when He said “By their fruit ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:16, 17, 18,.20. [K.J.V.] In conclusion, Islam is a corrupt tree and also a false religion, Proverbs 14:12. John 14:6. First John 2:22,23. 4:14,15. 5:12,13,20.

    1. I replied to a Gorka tweet about our Saudi pals being “the good Muslims”, noting that, yes, they are good Muslims–good, Salafist Muslims. He responded the he and I have a different definition of “good Muslims”.

    2. From his book’s title, “Defeating Jihad”–although I have not read it–one might think jihad is not a component of Islam; that Islam is not its driving force.

McMaster and Gorka: Understanding or Misunderstanding Islam?
    ………………………

Fine article by Brian Thomas. That ugly hit piece by the NYT is very much indicative of the push to have us go back to sleep regarding the threat of Islam, as McMaster would advise.

Besides the situation with the erudite Dr. Gorka, there are rumors that McMaster is trying to oust Steve Bannon, as well. I would advise all American Jihad Watchers to wrote the White House to express their support for Gorka and Bannon and the acknowledgement that it is Islam that is the problem.

      Seconding that, gravenimage.

I also hope that ‘Act for America’ is mobilising their membership, en masse, to do similar (re writing to the White House to express support for Gorka and Bannon, and to state that it is Islam that is the problem).

    Salient points re the koran-
    1. It has no chronology; verses are arranged by order of length so events appear in random order.
    2. Consequently it is hard to tell what are ‘Mecca’ verses or ‘Medina’ verses.
    3. Therefore, even knowing the principle of abrogation [allah changing his mind] one cannot apply it.
    4. Conclusion- a *simplified koran is needed, with full chronology showing the timeline of Muhammad’s
    history.
    5. *the koran is very repetitive, boredom is a big deterrent in reading it. As are the many nonsense verses.

Conclusion- is there such a readable, easily understood koran? YES –

Islam as a ‘religion of peace’ is merely Islamic propaganda bought into by the useful idiots on the Left. The facts of Islam’s teaching, it’s bloody and aggressive 1,400 year holy war against non-believers, it’s barbaric cultural practices, and the chaos it creates proves beyond any doubt that Islam is a supremacist belief system hallmarked by intolerance, bigotry and hypocrisy.

Sharia Law is the nemesis of Democracy. It does not allow for freedom of religion, expression or belief. Democracy and Islam is an oxymoron, a state of affairs that cannot possibly co-exist. Every Muslim government is either dictatorial, autocratic or theocratic and hence anti-democratic.

Muslim demonstrators in Europe are on record and marching for, an end to democracy and freedom. We fought for freedom and democracy in WW II and we will again!
