You can see McMaster say this beginning at the four-minute mark:
“We are engaged today, as General George C. Marshall’s generation was engaged, against enemies who pose a great threat to all civilized peoples. As our World War II generation defeated Nazi Fascism and Japanese imperialism, and as later generations defeated Communist totalitarianism, we will defeat today’s enemies, including terrorist organizations like Daesh, who cynically use a perverted interpretation of religion to incite hatred and justify horrific cruelty against innocents.” — Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, speech to Virginia Military Institute, Center for Leadership and Excellence, November 21, 2016
In this video also, from May 2016, McMaster says this same thing. At 14:43, McMaster refers to “groups like ISIL, who use this irreligious ideology, this perverted interpretation of religion to justify violence. They depend on ignorance, and the ability to recruit vulnerable segments of populations to foment hatred, and then use that hatred to justify violence against innocents.”
This could be Barack Obama or John Kerry speaking.
As I explained here, this was during the Obama regime, when that was the official policy of the U.S. government, but President Trump has repeatedly criticized his predecessor (and his 2016 election opponent) for not being willing to call the problem of jihad terror by its right name. Since he has become President, he has repeatedly reiterated his determination to eradicate “radical Islamic terrorism.” If McMaster genuinely holds the view that the Islamic State is not Islamic, then he is a disastrous pick as National Security Adviser, and will continue the willful ignorance of the Obama administration, hamstringing efforts to understand, and counter effectively, the motives and goals of the enemy.
Brian Thomas says
I’m taking every single utterance made under the Obama regime with a pinch of salt until such time as people get to say new things under Trump. It is clear from the treatment of so many people that saying anything against the “Islam is a religion of peace” orthodoxy was a career ending statement.
I’m more interested if people were writing and talking about Islam before Obama and before 2001.
PRCS says
“It is clear from the treatment of so many people that saying anything against the “Islam is a religion of peace” orthodoxy was a career ending statement”
Not just relevant to political regimes. Consider the constant regurgitation of “radical Islamic terrorism”, “radical Islam”, “perversion of the faith” mantra by so-called journalists, educators, politicians of all stripes around the world, etc., etc., etc.
Ned Kelly says
Im convinced Trump has people in his office who are determined to sabotage him any way they can. This may be one of them.
Daniel Triplett says
McMaster seems sincere with his words, believing his own BS.
No one was forcing him to pander to Obama. It wasn’t a Q &A. He was giving a speech, choosing to speak those words.
If he truly believed otherwise and was simply trying to protect his job, why say anything about ISIS/IS at all? He could’ve spoken about 1000 other things.
If he can’t see that the problem is Islam, not ISIS, then we all have a big problem on our hands. The NSA Director sees the POTUS several times per day, and is a huge influence on him.
Bolton was the sanest of the final 4. A shame DJT didn’t pick him.
Pastor C says
Clearly, this was one of Barry’s minions! Why the h…is he in this position in the first place?
How did he get there?
I thought Trump was going to ‘drain the swamp?’
Besides, who vetted this guy?
Did Trump really know his true feelings, and how woefully ignorant he is about Islam, terrorists, Sharia, etc. before this sickening disgusting and brain-dead choice was made?
And if he knew, is the nation now being hoodwinked into believing Trump will do any more than Barry did to protect us?
Finally, if this president still purports to ‘destroy the Islamic State,’ how does this particular choice comport with that promise?
The last thing Americans need, in a time of war (particularly when we’re losing) is to receive mixed messages from still another Commander-in-Chief who says one thing and does another!
Daniel Triplett says
“Besides, who vetted this guy?”
You’re right. All 3 and 4-Stars are selected and vetted by the POTUS himself.
So, all 3 and 4-Stars on the roster today are Obama plants, with the same Worldview.
The military is a fine resource from which to gain superb performers, but you need to go to the mid-level officer ranks to find those less affected by politics.
This is not to say we don’t have some fine 4-Stars, but they’re in the minority. Best to draw from O-7 and below.
John W. says
I know it’s still way better than Obama and his minions but even I get tired of hearing about radical Islamic terrorism because it still tends to imply there is a peaceful side of Islam. And it ignores the other problems with Islam that are not related to blowing up things. But as I said, at least progress has been made. And yes this pick is a troubling one.
C T says
If one dumps all the non-Quranic sayings (“Hadith”), one is left with a holy book that can have its violent parts constrained to being applicable to a conflict over 1000 years ago and which specifically forbids compulsion in religion. So an Islam that only accepts the Quran can be peaceful. Does McMaster know this? Has he a clue what’s in the extra Sunni scriptures?
Max Publius says
It’s hard to say what his true opinions were under Obama. I recall watching Flynn on CNN a couple of years ago saying that his Muslim friends were informing him about Islam and they assured him it is a “religion of peace” yadayada. I thought then what a fool he was, but Flynn seems to have gotten his own opinion back after he retired from the Army and no longer had an Islamophile as his boss.
Daniel Triplett says
1. The President must understand we are at war to eradicate Islam, because Islam seeks to eradicate us, and has been trying to do so for 1400 years.
2. The problem is way too big for a conventional military solution, which leaves us one last option.
3. The only way to reconcile this conflict is with nuclear weapons. We can either use them first, or wait for our enemy to amass an arsenal they promise to use to destroy us.
Until our President believes this, we’re in grave existential danger.
Joe McDonald says
Now now!
Without destroying buildings or killing (if they are subhuman isLIEmists, is it still “killing”?), we can use “Neutron bombs”, basically like a giant flashcube at 10,000ft emitting a gamma ray burst. It sterilizes the jihadist zealots, then we have to wait a generation for the stench of isLIEam to fade into history, while not breaking any of our own commandments.
If real nukes are used, it should be just 1 for starters, with ground zero at mecca and on whatever day all the death cultists gather for their heretical blasphemous cesspool of homage to the pervert “prophet” and his bogus hate filled hallucinations & fabrications.
Clean up the gene pool because anyone stupid enough to believe a word of his spew is a defective mind indeed!
Daniel Triplett says
We’ve discussed this before.
This is war, and lots of our enemy will die if we seek victory. It’s how it works. It’s war.
I’m both Christian and a USAF war vet. I neither have nor feel any guilt for the enemy we’ve killed, nor should I.
Neutron bombs kill people, and preserve infrastructure, but people still die; make no mistake.
For destroying hardware, neutron bombs are a bad choice. For destroying population centers or large formations of advancing enemy lines, they’re an excellent choice.

CONOR CRUISE O’BRIEN

The lesson of Algeria: Islam is indivisible
For good measure: send a copy of the same article, suitably highlighted, to *every* Congressperson and Senator.
And to every *State* Governor and Legislator, for good measure.
Here are the opening paragraphs of that article, by the astute and erudite and cosmopolitan Irishman.
“Fundamentalist Islam” is a misnomer which dulls our perceptions in a dangerous way.
“It does so by implying that there is some other kind of Islam, which is well disposed to those who reject the Koran. **There isn’t.** {my emphasis – dda}
“Islam is a universalist, triumphalist and political religion. It claims de jure dominion over all humanity; that is God’s will. The actual state of affairs, with unbelievers of various sorts dominating most of the world, is a suspension of God’s will and a scandal to the faithful. The world is divided between the House of Islam and the House of War, meaning the rest of us.
“For more than two centuries now, the House of War has been in the ascendant, and the House of Islam has been abased.
“The remedy for this unnatural and intolerable state of affairs is jihad.
“Jihad is defined as “the religious duty imposed on all Muslims to wage war upon those who do not accept the doctrines of Islam”.
“The Prophet Mohamed himself not merely preached but waged jihad. God’s word, dictated to the Prophet and preached by him, is binding on all Muslims, and his example is their inspiration.
“In the glorious centuries of expansion, the jihad carried Islam from Arabia, to the west as far as the Atlantic; to the north as far as Vienna; to the south as far as the Sahara and down the east coast of Africa to Madagascar; and to the east across Persia and the Indian subcontinent into part of China and Indonesia.
“**What is going on today in the Muslim world is not the advent of some aberrant thing called Islamic fundamentalism but a revival of Islam itself – the real thing – which Western ascendancy and Westernised post-Muslim elites no longer have the capacity to muffle and control. The jihad is back.** {my emphasis – dda; these two sentences, when you print out a copy of O’Brien’s article for the attention of certain persons in government, should be marked with fluorescent yellow or light-green highlighter}.
Here’s another ruthlessly lucid paragraph, from further down in the same article.
“””All the great religions are the same” is the idea.
Only they aren’t.
….
“The Prophet Mohamed did not offer his followers a chance to live in harmony with their neighbours.
“He taught them to fight their neighbours, if they were unbelievers, and kill them or beat them into submission.
“And it is futile to say of those Muslims who faithfully follow those teachings today that their actions are “not intrinsically related to Islam”.
“We are facing an Islamic revival.”
Highlight *those* sentences, as well, in yellow or red or green.

I wonder when the simple facts obtain, and are stated clearly: A devout muslim is a danger to all others. Unlike devout jews, christians, buddhists, hindhus, bahai, et al, a devout muslim is a demonstrable danger to ‘all others’.
The theology of Mohammed, clearly stated that this be so, and it has been so demonstrated historically and in modern times.
No… all muslims are not homicidists, nor terrorists, but we will never see all those normal muslims rally and call for the elimination of those terrorists, and for those who sustain, maintain and create them.

Passages from Qur’an/sunn’ah which drive Islam’s supremacism, hatred of “unbelievers” and jihad.

I’ll play devil’s advocate: assuming that McMaster genuinely believes that ISIS is a perversion of islam (and I’ll reserve my judgement on that until he makes similar statements under Trump’s administration), what’s stopping him from being effective at military pursuing ISIS and its several branches around the world? Assuming, that is, he doesn’t have the same beliefs seemingly held by Obama – that American might was the issue and that pursuing terrorists only served to creating terrorists.
Steve Klein says
I am getting the impression, the constant barrage of attacks from the media is taking its toll on the president. These attacks (in my view) are almost exclusively about defending Islam / Muslims.

kessler says
Disaster…Why was this guy picked when his beliefs are completely at odds with those of Trump?
Indeed, he seems sincere in this speech. But I still cling on to the hope that he was just spouting political correctness as he would have been destroyed under the Obama administration for speaking the truth.
It’s a new dawn under Trump. Reality of the Islamic threat is no longer buried. It has surfaced and is in everybody’s face every day. Thank you Trump and please make sure you can trust your picks – I can imagine some will accept the role with the intent of taking down Trump. The hatred against an American president is at a level never seen before. Not a time to take chances with the people hired to work closest to him.
Do you think Trump is easily manipulated? I know he has been rock solid on his “islamic terrorism” stance, but I feel that he can be led astray – simply down to the fact that his knowledge seems limited.
If people close to him like McMaster has an agenda to manipulate his mind, I think it can happen.
I hope I’m wrong.
kessler says
And another thing – given the fact that Trump doesn’t have the knowledge and articulation to shut down his critics/opponents, for how long can he continue being beating up by them and maintain the trust of his voters? At some point the question mark simply becomes to big. The anti-Trump hatred seems to gain momentum even after it reached fever high weeks ago. People are jumping on the band-wagon because “it’s the right thing to do” and the thing which will “distance yourself from the bigots”.
It’s like an unstoppable epidemic.
For me, the leftist/liberal hysteria makes me support Trump even more, but I don’t know if that is the general consensus among his voters.
Anyway – I worry about Trump. I don’t want to see this fall apart. Because if it does, it will have a chain effect in Europe, and the alternative that will rise from the ashes is something which will welcome the death knell of our society.
Mark Swan says
kessler, what we do know is that President Trump weathered the whole world, seemingly
trying to stop him from being elected, they will have to do a whole lot more to get him to
flinch even, or so it would seem to me, I hope he stays strong.
Atheist Kaffur says
There is no perversion of Islam, Islam is Islam. What there is however is the cultivation of religious fanaticism. Religious fanaticism has all the baggage of intolerance, religious supremacy, hate and repression of freedoms. Lets call it religious fanaticism because it can be applied to all. That is what other Muslims who don’t support ISIS etc call it.
Mark DeFord Eletion says
The only perversion of islam is its modernization, as practiced by peaceable muslims like most of those living in the wast. ISIS is attempting to bring islam back to its original intent, and so from ISIS’ perspective, it is trying to undo the perversion, and recreate the original intent of islam, which is mostly attack, kill the men, rape the women, make slaves of the survivors, and steal whatever seems valuable.

Thanks for the article mr Spencer. I live in the Netherlands and support Geert Wilders and I agree with you that McMaster is a disaster where he apparently seems to believe that islam is a peacefull religion. This shows that the shamefull planned ousting of general Flynn not only was organised by the Clinton people like Ben Rhodes but welcomed by liberation theology indoctrinated dimmi christians in the White House as well. John Bolton should be in the White House instead of backstabbing dimmi’s. Mike Pence who positioned himself as a principled ideologue and supporter of the Tea Party movement, noting he was “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order, visited the obsolete Nato and the crumbling European Union and conveyed president Trumps opinion that although Trump said that Merkel made ‘catastrophic mistake’ with refugee policy and that Brexit was a good thing, that the US supports Nato if they pay their 2 % GDP share … but France under Marine le Pen might follow Charles de Gaulle to leave Nato because France does not want to pay taxes on the defense budget to be directed by the United Kingdom against Russia, the friend of France.
mortimer says
Hatred of dirty kafirs is NOT (I repeat) NOT an aberration, but the ‘essential’, canonical Islamic doctrine called ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ (allegiance and disavowal) … a doctrine ALL Muslims must believe AND practice to be admitted to paradise.
McMaster and his staff need to read the FOLLOWING:
‘ALLEGIANCE AND DISAVOWAL’ is a canonical, well-defined, intolerant, discriminatory doctrine of Islam that is ‘ESSENTIAL’, DEFINED, LEGALLY BINDING, PRECISE and OFFICIAL.
‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ – (Allegiance and Disassociation) is an Islamic doctrine that is very similar to apartheid. ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is an ‘essential doctrine’ (usul ud-deen). ‘Essential’ means that all Muslims must believe and practice al Walaa wal Baraa as a condition of being admitted to paradise. ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is a highly developed, well-supported and canonical part of Islam approved by the consensus of Islamic jurists. ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is legally binding and obligatory upon all Muslims.‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is precisely defined by Islamic jurists and is not a nebulous idea.
‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is an official Islamic doctrine and considered the second most important doctrine in Islam. Definition of ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ from Islamic sources:
-from “The Islaamic Concept of al-Walaa’ wal-Baraa’” by Khalid El-Gharib: …“[iv] to show enmity to those who show enmity to Allaah and His Messenger” (i.e. Muslims are to visibly demonstrate their enmity or towards the kufaar – non-Muslims)
-from a lecture given by Sheikh Abdullah al-Faisal (H.A.): “The implication of al-Baraa is that one HATES for the sake of Allah (SWT)…Al-Baraa means to recognize who your enemies are and to HATE them and EXTERMINATE them in their Endeavour to get rid of your Deen, al-Islam…Al-Baraa is to HATE the people who propagate Baatil (falsehood)—the Muslim should HATE them and (at least desire to) KILL them when the time comes.” (i.e. the hatred of Muslims toward the kufaar is for the purpose of ethnic cleansing).
Examples of Baraa from Historic Islamic Leaders:
-from Ahmad Sirhindi (1564-1624): “The honour of Islam lies in insulting kufr and kafirs. One who respects the kafirs dishonours the Muslims… The real purpose of levying jiziya on them is to humiliate them to such an extent that they may not be able to dress well and to live in grandeur. They should constantly remain terrified and trembling. It is intended to hold them under contempt and to uphold the honour and might of Islam.”
-from ibn Taymiyya, “Book of Emaan”: “… true believers show animosity and hatred towards disbelievers and never support them.” -from Umar Sulayman ‘Abd-Allaah al-Ashqar, “Belief in Allah”: “The Muslim should regard the Kuffaar as enemies and hate them because of their kufr, just as he hates their kufr (disbelief) itself.”
– from Sheikh Muhammad Saeed al Qatani, authoritative Saudi Sharia lawyer and imam at the Abu Bakr and Al Furqan Mosques in Mecca: “ The doctrine of al Wala wal Baraa is the real image for the actual practice of this faith.” (book “Al Walaa wal Baraa According to the Aqeedah of the Salaf”)

The first thing most military officers do when travelling to a theater of war is to study the IDEOLOGY and the HISTORY and RELIGION of the combatants to truly UNDERSTAND THE ENEMY.
I cannot be that McMaster has not studied the mind of Islam.
In brief, Islam has 3 essential doctrines that explain it. These doctrines come in pairs…
1) The Premise of Islam: Allah is single & Mohammed has all authority for all mankind.
2) The Mentality of Islam: To love Muslims & To hate disbelievers and separate from them.
3) The Method of Islam: To wage JIHAD & to EMIGRATE (or retreat).
If McMaster does not understand these three basic parts of Islam, he will not understand the motives of Muslims and never defeat the enemy.

Then they will know to cut the Gordian knot: just assume that a mohammedan is lying their face off, one way or another, unless what is said can be confimred by at least two or three independent non-Mohammedan sources of established veracity.
NO infidel can trust a ‘deal’ made by said infidel with *any* Mohammedan entity. EVER. No Infidel should EVER agree to or trust a ‘deal’ offered to them by any Mohammedan entity.

McMaster will be conversing with the 2 afforementioned people and others as well that share General Flynn’s view if Islam. McMaster needs to shift from troop command to National Security ADVISOR.
He could be obliquely saying that Islam is perverted altogether, which too many don’t believe even though it is. Unfortunately I don’t believe McMaster is saying that at all. He is way to honest and frank in his speech and mannerisms. I like that, 96% liberal DC will attempt to take advantage if him.
If he knows and understands this enemy better than we might think then he is avoiding making waves. IOW- Dont piss off Muslims which is part of the problem. Forget Muslims ‘feelings’. I’d rather him state it for the record rather than all this white wash and I get a bad feeling that he is setting a political/ social strategy of attempting to separate cold blooded thugs of ISIS from the standard Muslim. Good luck with that since standard, moderate Muslims are the aberration from violent, supremacist, fundamental Mohammadens.
Even more ambiguous he said the transition from the cold war to our new state of the world started with 911. Well who the heck does he think caused that?!?! That to me is the most disappointing part, not making plain and clear his honest assessment of 911 after mentioning it as a pivotal point in our history. Why is it part of our history then? Because the unspeakable act came from tbe Islamic controlled middle east, financed by Sauddi Arabia. Hopefully he’ll get some good advice moving forward.
Lucretius says
“They depend on ignorance, and the ability to recruit vulnerable segments of populations to foment hatred, and then use that hatred to justify violence against innocents.”
No, they depend on respect for the canonical texts of Islam and the high repute of classical scholarly commentary which takes these to explain how to live as a Muslim. One can see them doing this in their online pubs. And these teachings are governmentally supported in such countries as Saudi Arabia
If the Trump administration fogs up this phenomenon with the word “ignorance,” it will have made a terrible mistake and missed a great opportunity. Trump needs to use his talent for confrontational bluntness and “something to s going on here” to take the national sources and funders of this ideology to task and do his best to humiliate them on the world stage and embarrass them away from it. We should all contact Trump and Bannon to press this policy home.

Well he did compare this struggle to fighting the Nazis…although I think Islam is an even more formidable threat. Now he just needs to change “a perversion of Islam” to “the perversion that is Islam” and then place it in historical context. The Truth about Islam:
“Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it.” (Surah 2:216)
“Seek out your enemies relentlessly.” (Surah 4:103-)
“…make war on the leaders of unbelief…Make war on them: God will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them…” (Surah 9:12-)
“Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians]…until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued.” (Surah 9:27-)
“If you do not fight, He will punish you sternly, and replace you by other men.” (Surah 9:37-)
“Prophet make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home.” (Surah 9:73)
“Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them.” (Surah 9:121-)
“Muhammad is God’s apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another.” (Surah 48:29)
Quran (9:29) – “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” “People of the Book” refers to Christians and Jews. According to this verse, they are to be violently subjugated, with the sole justification being their religious status. This was one of the final “revelations” from Allah and it set in motion the tenacious military expansion, in which Muhammad’s companions managed to conquer two-thirds of the Christian world in the next 100 years. Islam is intended to dominate all other people and faiths.
Mohammed said, “Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him.” (Hadith Al Buhkari vol. 9:57) This command is practiced in almost all Islamic Fundamentalist countries today.
Mohammed said: “No Muslim should be killed for killing a Kafir (infidel).”(Hadith vol. 9:50) This means a non- Muslim.

When the sacred months are over, kill the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. – Surah 9:5
The fact is the core of their religion is to kill those of other religions and it is a religion of violence and bloodshed, not ‘peace’! Their first target is Christians and second Jews. Contrast this to Christianity where the Messiah Jesus says to “Love your enemies” and it is a religion of love and peace and non violence. (P.S. The Messiah has two arrivals, one as a servant sacrifice and one as a conquering King, see Isaiah 53 in the Old Testament. It lines up with the Spring and Autumn 7 biblical feasts given to Moses where there is a long gap inbetween; the summer of harvest or times of the Gentiles.) ( :

This guy is the wrong man for the job. He’s one of “them”.

Saying “a perverted interpretation of religion” is not the same as saying “a perverted interpretation of Islam.” Unless elsewhere McMaster has used the word “Islam” in that phrase, it could be that he believes Islam itself is “a perverted interpretation of religion” and that ISIL is practicing Islam, i.e., “a perverted interpretation of religion.” Let’s not be so quick to condemn. His unusual phrasing may be for a reason.

Is there a guidebook or official list of the perverted interpretations ?
