“‘As you can see, the assignment was in no way an attempt to diminish the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Nor was it designed to support the goals of Al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations,’ said Rob Schweers, ISU’s director of communications…’This is similar to the vital work being performed in our nation’s diplomatic and intelligence operations, such as the Central Intelligence Agency, or the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research.'”
How grand, except that it is extremely unlikely that such work is actually being done in the CIA or the State Department: in both, the official line is still that Islam is a religion of peace that has nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism. So they can’t really try to enter into the al-Qaeda mindset in any realistic way, because that would involve them trafficking in Islamic terms and concepts.
“Schweers added the assignment is simply an exercise in expanding critical thinking skills and analyzing international events through a ‘different lens.'”
Is that so? Iowa State University is all about critical thinking, even when it involves trying to get into the mindset of a despised group? Is that so? When is the assignment coming to write about the Garland jihad attack from the perspective of those defending the freedom of speech inside the event? ISU would never assign such a thing that would require it to get into the mindset of “Islamophobes” — isn’t that right, Mr. Shweers?
“Students instructed to write essay on 9/11 from terrorists’ perspective,” by Nathan Rubbelke, The College Fix, March 27, 2017:
A recent assignment in an international studies course at Iowa State University asked students to write a historical account of the 9/11 terrorist attacks from the perspective of Al-Qaeda.
“Write a paper that gives a historical account of 911 from the perspective of the terrorist network. In other words, how might Al-Qaeda or a non-Western historian describe what happened,” stated the assignment, a copy of which was obtained by The College Fix.
“Don’t worry about the fact you don’t agree with the terrorists, the point of the exercise is to consider completely different perspectives,” the assignment adds.
A university spokesman told The Fix the assignment doesn’t diminish the “tragic events” of 9/11 and equates the essay prompt to work undertaken by America’s diplomatic and intelligence agencies.
The assignment is part of an International Studies course taught by lecturer James Strohman, who’s taught multiple political science and public administration courses at Iowa State over the years.
The assignment aimed to view history from “different contexts.”
“Let’s focus on the 911 terrorist attack and how it might be interpreted differently by different people around the world,” the instructions read. “For this exercise, you have to ‘get out of the box’ of our thinking about what happened on 911 and view it from a completely different perspective.”
The assignment tells students this may be difficult to do, but that it’s an exercise examining the differences of people, cultures and historical perspectives.
Students were encouraged to use their imagination and make their papers as interesting as they’d like in the 500-word minimum assignment, and that there’s no correct answer, “just your ability to look at what we consider a heinous action from other perspectives.”
Strohman, a Democrat, former member of the Story County Board of Supervisors, and current member of the Iowa Employment Appeal Board, did not respond to The College Fix’s requests to discuss the pedagogical reasoning behind the assignment.
A university spokesman provided a statement on his behalf.
“As you can see, the assignment was in no way an attempt to diminish the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Nor was it designed to support the goals of Al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations,” said Rob Schweers, ISU’s director of communications, in an email to The College Fix.
Schweers added the assignment is simply an exercise in expanding critical thinking skills and analyzing international events through a “different lens.”
“This is similar to the vital work being performed in our nation’s diplomatic and intelligence operations, such as the Central Intelligence Agency, or the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research,” he said….

Seriously. The exercise may increase awareness of the JIHAD DOCTRINE. You do not understand an idea or ideology until you understand it FROM THE INSIDE. This does not confer AGREEMENT, but it may create a PERFECT UNDERSTANDING of the JIHAD DOCTRINE.
I want more people who UNDERSTAND the JIHAD DOCTRINE and CAN REFUTE IT PERFECTLY.
Westman says
Likewise. Not many people, viewing Pearl Harbor from the Japanese perspective, will suddenly become Shinto sympathisers.
In fact all college students should be reqiired to read the entire Quran and tested on the status of women, punishment of apostates, rejecting infidels, Allah’s punushment for the unbeliever, and Allah’s plan for the Jews. BDS would disappear, Linda Sarsour would be kicked off campuses, and Alec Baldwin would be looking for another gig.
Of course IS (Iowa State) won’t be requiring anything beyond liberal students imagining what Islam SHOULD be like.

Or the students could have anti-American sentiments cultured by Marxist professors reinforced. They could write about how America deserved to be attacked because of its “war crimes,” “racism,” “xenophobia,” etc.

Even though al-qaeda and Daesh (I.S.) are not exactly the same (but hey, Sprite and 7-Up are not precisely the same either), one can get a good sense of the jihadist mindset by reading the English-language article “Why We Hate You” by Daesh/I.S.

Well said Mortimer. One of the biggest problems the West faces is the mindset that everyone around the world is “just like us” and “they want the same things we do”.
This is simply not true and is an extremely dangerous paradigm.

Gary, This is just another fraud pushed by the left wing globalist Islamic lovers!! It does not matter what their stupid idea of justice was. The terrorist who brought down the towers, and killed almost 3000 people were evil, Islamic terrorists. There is no way this type of “understanding” should be tolerated. If I were in that so called class, I’d write him a paper alright….. Telling him that he and his idea of justification of murder of thousands of men, women, and children, is the same as helping them and others like them, to commit such horrors, and fail me……….. Evil is not to be justified by any civilized people..

A very interesting post….and a succinct analysis of the current state of the culture and the cultural conflicts that are only conflicts because some nihilistic narcissists are in love with the sound of their own voices giving sounds to their mental masturbation and the self-actualized beauty of their perfect minds. Oh well, I guess the final arbiter in this War of Ideas is what it always has been….he who kills the mostest the fastest wins all the toys and gets to proclaim the Truth because, as it is written, the Truth is anything that is said and is believed. I often wondered what Jesus thought when Pilate asked him the ultimate question: “What is truth?” I guess we will never know because Jesus never responded to the question and remained silent. When the cohesiveness of a culture of a people is destroyed, so are the people. Hellenistic Greece fell into ruin because it failed to assimilate the multitude of immigrants flooding into the land of plenty….Rome also suffered from a lack of an immigration policy that failed to assimilate the barbaric hordes flooding into Rome to partake of the loot and plenty that Rome offered. So will America go the way of these great civilizations and will also be ruled over by the savages who are not limited by self-imposed qualms of social justice, multiculturalism and political correctness. We can already see that the Islamists will impose their will upon if we give them the chance. And unlike the Westerners, they will not tolerate or include anyone who does not obey and pay homage to this great religion.

Shocking! The students should refrain from completing such an outrageous assignment.
Tony says
no, it is easy,, if a student will just do a little research they will just start putting up koran verses and leave it at that,, such as
Quran (2:191-193) – “And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief or unrest] is worse than killing… but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah] and worship is for Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun(the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)”
Quran (3:151) – “Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority”. This speaks directly of polytheists, yet it also includes Christians, since they believe in the Trinity (ie. what Muhammad incorrectly believed to be ‘joining companions to Allah’).
Quran (4:89) – “They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks.”
now that should be at least an A-
underbed cat says
Wouldn’t that be a shock to the young student’s mind or he may discard that idea and write about poverty and the “imperialist” government a more acceptable version…and if he did find authentic doctrine, would he arrested on the college campus for insulting the MSA, and worry about sharia law of slander? No doubt it would start the resistance, candle marches and riots. In the best of worlds it would be a crack in the wall of denial….that may be a result the instructor wanted but could not explain if he worries about tenure.
billybob says
Absolutely! This should be seen as an opportunity to expose the violence inherent in Islam. I would expect nothing less than what you wrote to get a passing grade, but you would have to add a bit about the evolution of Islamic thought that led to the formation of Al Qaeda to get an A.
Jeanette says
I have read for years that there are newer Korans being published sans the damning passages (to keep westerners ignorant until they can be overcome by Islam).
If the whitewashed version of the Koran was used, the students didn’t see those passages.

I would do this assignment and state as a Jihadist I was only following the dictates of the Quran. I would explain the culture of hate in which i grew up and the love for death in preference to life. i would write of the motivation to be a martyr and the virgins (metaphorically called grapes) i would receive. I would state the jihadist desire to see Islam dominate the world.
Wellington says
Yours is the best approach, Bloggerd.
somehistory says
I agree with Wellington, but it would likely be graded as failing.
In all likelihood, the prof wants a feeling of *righteous glory* felt by the murders to shine through in the papers. It’s much like people who have interviewed serial killers and written about them as though they were so much more intelligent than are the police who had to hunt them down, and that intelligence is worth more than all else and makes up for the fact that murders were committed.
But, you would be right.
Wellington says
I agree, somehistory. It is HIGHLY likely that this “professor” (I put the term “professor” in quotes because few in the liberal arts anymore are real professors, interested in the elucidation of the mind) wants a certain response, i.e., the West, and particularly America, being the bad guy, and such insecure and unknowledgeable people now dominate in the universities and colleges across America. Overwhelmingly they do, both in the classroom and in the administration.
And from personal experience, after 29 years of teaching at a small college, please believe me when I say these people are deficient in two areas: 1) overall knowledge; and 2) the capacity to entertain opposite opinions of their own from students without marking them down. Which actually points up a third area by default, to wit, a massive insecurity residing deep within these deficient people.
I saw it first hand where I taught, even told by many students who took me into their confidence, that you had better agree with professor so-and-so, give the pathetic rube what they want, or you would suffer the consequences grade wise. And so glad I retired when I did, sick of all this leftist shit (and yes, this horrible result is ENTIRELY due to leftist thinking and one knows this or should know it). I’m sad in retirement about all this but also relieved I no longer have to personally witness this leftist totalitarianism, this leftist drivel, this leftist indoctrination, which now dominates at most every institution of higher learning (now lower learning) across the American landscape.
Most people in America still don’t know how very terrible college education has become. I do. There are many things I don’t know, for instance how to fix a carburetor or how to cut one’s hair or how to install a garbage disposal. The sum total of what I don’t know could fill volumes. But I DO KNOW, first hand, what has happened to college education. And it is sad beyond all measure what has happened to it. This I DO KNOW.
somehistory says
I put “professor” in quotes or *..*s because they are only “professing” to know something worthwhile.
I have known a few who knew their subject, and allowed students to disagree without being penalized for thinking differently. Many, way too many, want to dictate what to think and believe and force compliance with the unspoken threats of getting a lower grade than is really warranted.
It means that many students have to lower their own standards just to make a passing grade. One must basically lie, pretending to agree with the “professor.”

Mortimer, Mortimer you know those alleged “educated leaders’ with the best interests of their ‘citizenry’, ‘flock’ and in general ‘human-kind’ will TELL you ‘True’ Islam (so complicated and unprecedented) is easily misunderstood except by the Grand Muftis who prefer only to explain bits and pieces at a time to the Islamic masses. After all they’ve been ‘humiliated over centuries by the West. Trust them Islam is a Religion of Peace.and the Western “Leaders” Comrade BO, Baby face Trudeau but sly with M103, Theresa May who doesn’t know what she knows, Ex Stasi Officer Chancellor Merkel who advocates eliminating that pesky Free Speech that’s spoiling her rule unlike East Germany, Francois Hollande who talks toughs, acts on what he needs to but if he does eliminate No-Go Zones and demand a primary loyalty France is finished with an already 20% Muslim population. Finally Fruit-loop Pope Francis who is either an idiot or a clever Agent provocateur towards One World. I don’t believe for a minute Pope Benedict voluntarily retired. He never would have allowed these State of Affairs. He understood exactly what he was dealing with when it came to Islam and Muslims who are committed to Jihad. I do believe this why they ended his Papacy. The the Right Arch Bishop of Canterbury with his embrace of Islam. Has anyone heard of the Grand Mufti of Mecca or Medina inviting the Pope or Arch Bishop to conduct a service in a Mosque there? We know that is only in fantasy world. It works only in reverse. As of this this date we are losing this War since we cant assess the enemy on the home from within and without and the lack of will by our so called leaders.

Okay… here I am, in the classroom, requested to write a historical account of the 9/11 terrorist attacks from the perspective of Al-Qaeda.
Answer: In Islam, Muhammad is considered to be “al-insan al-kamil” the (ideal man) or the (perfect man).
He demonstrates “An exalted standard of character.”Qur’an 68:4 / القلم 4. Muhammad is the supreme example of behavior for muslims to follow. He is… “The Perfect Man”
إِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُواْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُم So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them.
فَإِذا لَقِيتُمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَضَرْبَ الرِّقَاب Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers *, smite at their necksِ
From Al-Queda’s perspective, the 9/11 attacks were holy, and justified since it was against infidels, holding Islam back from it’s commandment to submit the world.
That should get me an A or expelled, depending upon whether the facts of Islam are allowed to be stated or whether that’s now considered a racist(??) microaggression- which is quite the irony, considering this is what you will find online about instructions for cutting off the heads of infidels:
Hold him Tie the arms behind his back And bandage his legs together Just by the ankles Blindfold the punk So that he won’t hesitate as much For on seeing the sharp pointy knife He’ll begin to shake And continuously scream like an eedyat and jiggle like a jelly Trust me–this will sure get you angry It’s better to have at least two or three brothers by your side Who can hold the fool because as soon as the warm sharp knife touches his naked flesh He’ll come to know what’ll happen It’s not as messy or as hard as some may think, It’s all about the flow of the wrist. No doubt that the punk will twitch and scream But ignore the donkey’s ass And continue to slice back and forth You’ll feel the knife hit the wind and food pipe But don’t stop Continue with all your might. About now you should feel the knife vibrate, You can feel the warm heat being given off, But this is due to the friction being caused.

But Professor, you clearly said there were no wrong answers. Therefore, how does every student who completed the assignment not receive a perfect 100? I have catalogued your instructions for this assignment. Must I have to expose you for an Islamic indocrtinator instead of a trustworthy professor?
John A. Marre says
Obviously this soft-faced faker wants us to feel sympathy for the Muslims who committed the murders on September 11.
JayT says
Since the university spokesman said there is no right answer this would naturally lead to there is no grading. If there is grading every student writing out the assignment should simply parrot what they find on the rebuttal letter from the Shura Council of 9/11 back to the U.S. government.
If you get less than an A, you simply challenge Strohman and assert there was no need to *imagine* the perspective from the Jihadis since it was easier to simply use their honest words laid out in the rebuttal document.
Conclusion – waste of time and parent’s money for any student doing this project.

A typical egghead of the leftist educator ranks. He’s asking students, at least most of which never swore their loyalty to Islam, never read through the quran, where there are death directives to non-believers.
And, Strohman, a touchy-feely Democrat, asks ISU students to put themselves in the place of the 9/11 hijackers who swore on the quran to martyr themselves in the commission of causing more loss of life and damage as ever happened in one event in our homeland and caused by religious fanatics.
Obviously, Strohman’s interest is whether ISU students could psyche themselves sufficiently to repeat a deplorable event like 9/11…..all in the interests of higher education, which in this case is secondary education at its lowest and courtesy of an egghead seeking “critical thinking” results at ISU.
He only seeks sending students into a trip to fanatic-land, that’s all.
Kris T says
The assingment did seem to make it clear that people strongly disagree with the Jihadi’s action, so I don’t see this being too horrific, quite frankly. What’s wrong with asking, basically, “why did they do this” – this exercise would answer that question. If we don’t understand the enemy we won’t beat them. Or should be stifle the free-speech of the professor? I think not. Maybe a better way would have to ALSO included as assignment entitled “describe the pain the families of the innocent victims of 9/11 would have talked about”, etc.
Keep up the good work, Robert.
mustapha crap says
This is a perfect opportunity for students to write about how the jihad imperative is mandated in the Koran, throughout 109 verses commanding muslims to kill non muslims.
This could really rather spectacularly backfire on the University, the laws of unintended consequences etc.
Time to write all about the justification and commands for jihad contained throughout Islamic doctrine.
Sam says
Is there any study in any university about an objective study of Koran and the relationship of Koran with what Muslims (Jihadis) do?
I bet no.

To meet the Professor half way in what he wants, I would give a depressed, suicidal, frustrated, account of my life as a slave to Allah. I would talk about the need to punch my ticket to paradise by blindly obeying what he commanded his followers. That, misery and desperation would continue in this life under Islamic culture and in the afterlife, unless I gave up my last shred of autonomy in order to kill Allah’s enemies. That I could see no other way out. That I had learned to distrust people, to harbor hatred for non-believers, to suspect joy, to hate freedom, to respect exploitation, to deceive, to justify myself to others with religious exhibitionism, to conceal/not deal with my sin, to not question Islam in the slightest, etc….ever since I was designated Muslim at birth. Still, it was never enough. My only hope, per Allah and Muhammad, was to kill and be killed in Jihad. Now, after committing the act, my eyes are opened. It is too late for me now. I shall eternally receive what I deserve.

I read these comments and was impressed with the “critical thinking skills” of so many of the writers….I then wondered if all of these folks had attended a class taught by this professor. WOW! what a successful instructor he is…the topic alone elicited many thoughts of a critical nature and indicate that these folks have had some experience somewhere along the line to develop critical thinking skills. Maybe this is just an example of unintended consequences and the professor was wrong to assume that only he and his ilk are in possession of critical thinking skills and only he and his ilk can devise scenarios wherein those with low critical thinking skills can be transformed into mental giants. Then again…….

First, this absurd nonsense is the outcome of the PC folly of multiculturalism. Second,in this twenty –first century “War of Ideals” since September 11, 2001 in this great and terrible conflict between the Judeo- Christian West and the Islamic East, the sad reality is that one of the things that is holding back much progress of the West is that many Westerners are infected by the worthless , sick and unrealistic philosophy that is called “Cultural Relativity.”
Which is the concept that all culture are equal because this C.R concept teaches the foolishness that all values derive their meaning within the specific social content. This folly of thinking leads, or misleads, many people to view every position as only “opinion” and that truth is only relevant to the person or society holding that view. In other words, discovering actual truth in impossible.
Such C.R is absurd, nonsensical and contradictory. For example, to say “finding the truth is impossible “Is a statement of contradiction. For in making that statement that is saying, in essence, “I have found the truth which is finding the truth is not possible.” It should be obvious that this “War of Ideas” needs to and should have a solidly based in and on truth and not by a worthless “war of opinions” A C.R. person would say about a scholarly truth teller about Islam with its different kinds of jihad , as Pamela Geller, that she is only giving her “opinion” on the subject.
Such ignorance is appalling. Just look at history. If Americans had that C.R. view ,as many Americans do today , then during World war II it would had been madness and a fools fight to go into battle against the military forces of Nazism if it was only just “opinion” that Hitler was wrong and evil. Likewise in this twenty-first century it would be nonsense, for example, for the US troops to fight and maybe even die in Afghanistan if it’s just “opinion” that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are wrong and evil.
Two other examples of the falseness of C.R. with its teaching that everything is only “opinion.” First is in the elate 1970’s two guys said “There are so many different religions that no one can ever know the truth about religion.” They were really saying that statement so dogmatically that they were self-contradicting. For they were saying that they know the truth about religion that is not one can know the truth about religion. Second, a shallow man in the 1980’s said when asked the question “Why do you always small talk ? You don’t ever talk about a topic that might have some value, as politics? After all , all thing are related “ That shallow C.R man replied “There are so many different political ideas that finding the true one is unattainable and all thing are not related.” The wisdom-less man was saying that he obtained the truth which is the he can’t obtain the truth and who does can is really truthfully say that all thing are not related in he can’t find the truth. How foolish, an obvious contradiction. What is needed to counter this nonsense C.R./P.C. is the concept of “Absolutism.” Which a definition of this, with the scope of the topic, is “An absolute standard or principle .” In this “war of idea’s it’s the Bible with its absolute standards and principles to stand firm against Islam is its different types of jihad with its many evils. In conclusion, in this War of Ideas a firm foundation for truth may be found in the Bible and not the weak folly of CR. in which everything is “opinion.”
