Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Reza Aslan’s agenda: showing Hinduism and Christianity as violent, Islam as peaceful

Mar 9, 2017 7:07 pm By Robert Spencer

David Wood several years ago pointed out a feature of Reza Aslan’s work that, as time goes by, increasingly appears to be the central feature of all his work: he downplays or denies the violent aspects of Islamic teaching, while exaggerating or inventing violent elements in other religions. In No god but God, Aslan portrayed Muhammad as peaceful, explaining away or ignoring the violent actions that Islamic tradition attributes to him. In Zealot, Aslan portrayed Jesus as violent, resuscitating a long-discredited theory that Jesus was a member of the Zealot sect that rebelled against Roman oppression.

And now in this critique of Aslan’s controversial Believer episode in which he eats human brain tissue, Vamsee Juluri (the same person I took to task here, but who writes with great perceptiveness and acuity in this new piece) notes how Aslan is doing the same thing with Hinduism: trying to demonize it and depict it as violent. He focuses in his cannibalistic Believer episode on a small, odd, violent sect — one member even threatens to behead Aslan. Juluri charges that the episode was “contrived to actually de-humanize Hindus.” The overall effect is the same as the one Wood noticed regarding Aslan and Christianity: Aslan seems intent upon portraying non-Muslim religions as violent and filled with irrationality, but then when discussing Islam, is intent upon showing it to be benign and rational. His overall purpose seems to be Islamic apologetics, subtle dawah for the post-religious secular Leftists who would watch a show such as Believer, designed to foster complacency about the jihad threat and opposition to any effective steps to counter that threat.

This agenda makes clear why Aslan, despite his increasingly obvious Islamic heterodoxy, remains so popular with Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups in the U.S.: he has also spoken at events sponsored by the Muslim Students Association, a Brotherhood group, as well as at an at an event co-sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Perhaps they recognize that he shares their overall agenda.

“‘As if Touring a Zoo’: Reza Aslan Goes From Propaganda to Denial Over Believer Controversy,” by Vamsee Juluri, Huffington Post, March 9, 2017:

The sheer ignorance of CNN’s Believer seems to have achieved that most elusive of things in American democracy: bipartisanship, even if in censure and condemnation. Democratic senator Tulsi Gabbard expressed the pain in all our hearts and pointed out how appalling it was for CNN to sensationally depict human beings “as if touring a zoo.” From the Republican side, the founder of the Republican Hindu Coalition Shalabh Kumar called the program “disgusting.”

Few people who watched the show seem to have found much of value in it. Parth Parihar of the Hindu Students Council wrote a strong, moving piece in HuffPost, while even non-Hindu viewers and reviewers found the shallow discourse and sensationalism morbidly uninspiring. Asra Nomani and others found in it an apt moment to remind Reza Aslan that his seemingly objective and open-minded approach to different religions is not quite so at all. He had after all, famously mocked CNN in a tweet soon after the Boston bombing for calling it a terror attack, and expended quite some energy these last few years not simply in presenting a pleasant face for Islam after 9/11 which is understandable, but in sanitizing the truth a bit more than that too.

That tendency to sanitize, to put it politely, is the problem with Reza Aslan.

Some readers, particularly those who are familiar with South Asian discourses and issues might wonder what could be considered “sanitization” in a program that dealt with outcastes, cannibals, and indeed the “Hindu caste system” as a whole (interestingly, the program and all the concerns about its possible impact on the safety of Sikhs, Muslims, Arabs and other South Asians who look like Hindus did not seem to warrant any expression of concern from some leading progressive South Asian activist groups).

So what exactly does Aslan’s foray into the “city of death” with its excreta-hurling gurus sanitize? Very simply, it is meant to disguise the total reality of why he, and CNN, and their particular lens for looking over it, are all there in that place and at this time in history, and what they are doing. This is not a speculation on intent. I will accept Aslan’s stated premise of the show at face value. It is not even necessarily about Hinduism but about fascinating fringe religious groups, and the Aghoris certainly fit that bill. Granted.

But the question remains: if the premise of this episode was to humanize the Aghoris (and no one can object to that), why was so much of it contrived to actually de-humanize Hindus?

If we look carefully at the text, and its silences, and the forces surrounding it, the truth is quite clear. The Aghoris are not the real story. They are like a magician’s practiced gesture of distraction, calculated to get you looking the wrong way. And what they are diverting us from is the basic, overwhelming reality here.

How on earth is it possible that in the 21st century, in America, a professor gets away without showing a drop of concern about cultural appropriation, savior complexes, or even reputation? How does he ignore two days of incredible outrage and urgency stemming from the only two things confronting us on television, the shootings of Hindus and Sikhs on the one hand, and the frightening CNN promos about cannibals and death on the other?

How does someone witness all of this, and then, in an interview on the morning of the broadcast, proceed to declare, presumably with a smile, that controversy is “awesome”?

And then, after the program airs, and it shows not much of an improvement over its sensationalist and inaccurate promos either (except for that fig leaf appeal to the conscience that somehow it is fighting the evil of a vaguely and metaphysically evoked “caste system”), how does someone ignore the questions raised by responsible people, leaders, scholars, activists, genuine liberals, and then declare in a post-show message that he understands that they are offended—not by anything else—but by the show’s treatment of “caste discrimination”?

How does someone ignore all of it to say just that? How does someone know that his charmed world of prestige will not change one bit tomorrow even if he tramples on the Hindus, ignores them totally? What sort of privilege lets you do that?…

What Aslan put his name and face to was fundamentally propaganda. You don’t even need too much knowledge of India’s complex sociology to fight it, but just attention. Just watch the program again, and examine the visuals and question their connection to the narrative. Aslan drones on about rebirth and untouchables, and what do you see; an everyday scene in India, nothing more, people napping contentedly under a tree, or on their doorsteps. Without the narrative you see life as it is. But with the voice-over, what you believe is that the same man napping outside his door is there because he is “untouchable,” sleeping outside rather than inside, and he is waiting to die, be cremated, have his ashes “dumped” in the Ganga, so he can be reborn, first as a Shudra, then as a Vaishya, then as a Kshatriya, then as a Brahmin, and then finally moksha.

Phew. What a tiresome journey. Good thing that in between this show CNN was also showing us trailers about Finding Jesus.

Then, there is what the program does not show us, a million things that might damage its narrative, a billion people whose realities contradict it, not the names of the thousands of communities that make up India, not the fact that the present Prime Minister comes not from the tip but the base of the so-called caste pyramid, not the scholarship that shows increasingly how much of a colonial construction the whole simplistic “pyramid” and the discourse around it is.

And the most obvious flaw, pointed out by many viewers on twitter even as the show was airing, was the set-up of the Aghoris as somehow the only people offering mixed-caste schools and services in India. Amma, the hugging saint, does it. Sri Sathya Sai Baba, my own guru, did it. Many, many, spiritual figures, traditional and innovative, run schools in which all castes mix and play. And yet, the conceit of this show was such that it could anchor a whole episode and the reputation of its host on making it seem that only the Aghori philosophy had the possibility for human redemption in the benighted mess that is Hinduism.

Why this deliberate and convoluted premise? Perhaps the producers or some of the sponsors expect some well-meaning viewers in America to think, let’s see, if the only way Hinduism “permits” freedom from caste is by eating corpses or s**t, then… why don’t they all just choose a religion that lets you be free without eating corpses or s**t? Perhaps?…

If Reza Aslan wants to show that a religion is violent. All he needs to do is start with its founder. Muhammed and step down the steps of history….Picking Hindus shows Reza’s sinister agenda…

Any Muhammed: . THE PERFECTION OF EVIL. Mass Murderer, Rapist, Child Molester, Child Beheader, Terrorist, Torturer, ….Muhammad was a hands on Fuhrer Prophet. He not only ordered mass murder, torture, raping of sex slaves but he personally beheaded his enemies, raped their women, plundered their property, and sold the women – he and his men did not want as sex slaves and their children into slavery to raise funds to finance his jihadi armies.

A child is the very essence of Moral Perfection. To take a child and sexually molest the child is evil. To molest a child while proclaiming to be a prophet is a despicable evil act. To involve a child (Baby Aisha) in a massacre (Banu Qurayza) is a depraved horrid act of pure diabolical evil. To behead children is unspeakable evil.

As long as Reza Azlan has a koran-indoctrinated public to which he can make such ridiculous comparisons, because we do know the truth concerning Islam, he will be able to fill himself with the satisfaction that he has an audience which looks forward to his Islamic distortions, simply because distortions are all they care to know.
However, for those of us with honesty in mind, the truth will prevail.

I agree Stan but even to this day many want the fantasy, but the media has no excuse, not to research authentic doctrine, we can no longer be silenced.

The former Prime minister of Denmark of 2001-2009 and Secretary General of NATO 2009-2014 gives an excellent summary tying recent events together and how America can restore stability to the world. Very well done and professional. Please watch this if you have 5 minutes it’s a very simple breakdown of what’s happened and why we need to intervene. I disagree with his statements that only Americans have the moral courage to carry out a real plan against what we face. Plenty of people around the world are ready to pitch in, it’s the EU that’s obstructing real solutions.

There is an attempt to break the morale of Hindus and there are many forces at work in Europe and the U.S. itself.Instead of Islam which is an expansionist,socio-political cult, they are going all guns blazing against meek Hinduism. The Christian evangelists are going to repent weakening Hinduism later when the “cute Muslims’ turn against them,as they always have in history,in a classic act of betrayal=which is not evident today due to self-imposed blindness.

Reza Aslan’s agenda: showing Hinduism and Christianity as violent, Islam as peaceful
    …………………

On the thread about Aslan eating brains, this is *exactly* what I noted he was doing–making other faiths look bad, while whitewashing the horrors of Islam.

For instance, in that case, he was focusing on an obscure sect whose practices are rejected by most mainstream Hindus.

  10. Terry says

    Mar 9, 2017 at 8:46 pm

This morning, on the radio, the show was commented on. Two points were made- 1. CNN is doing so poorly in ratings,, (gee-wonder why?); viewers ( getting some intelligence)); and is not a news station or journalism, (they stopped being journalistic years ago) but a sort of entertainment station. and therefore, item 2.

Reality t.v. shows make money, so (the CNN people-apparently decided)-do a reality show. And this was the result. (The second is the opinion of the person doing the narration on the radio program).

He also said, the reaction was, this is sick.

The Muslims and their supporters are not “sick,” and to say they are is to let them off the hook.

Anyone who supports the agendas of the Muslims (kill everyone but themselves; mutilate all females in the world, etcl) is EVIL, not sick!

Our inability to call something evil, and then eradicate is already helping the Army of Charles Mansons (Pamela Geller’s phrase) with their plan of massacre.

Another point–as off-putting as this sect practicing cannibalism is, they do not actually hurt anyone. The bodies they consume and use in their worship were cremated and put into the Ganges by their loved ones.

So even in this case, Islam–which enjoins its followers to oppress and murder unbelievers–is *much* more harmful.

Anyone with common sense can easily tell that Aghoris are not main stream “Hindus”, Hinduism is unlike any religion, it can be a religion or atheistic if you want it to be if you just believe in morals and not god. The religion is up to you.

And not to look at cannibalism in a favored light, they are not exactly eating a live human, but a dead human, both are gross and vomit inducing, but they are doing what their faith asks them to do. And no one has any qualms. BTW, did Christians really eat Jesus’s flesh and blood?

And to think of it, cannibalism is present in all living being.

    P.S. I’m not a Hindu, well I don’t consider myself a Hindu, I’m an atheist

Christ’s human body, after resurrection, rose uncorrupted to Heaven where he is “seated at the right hand of God the Father”. None of us can say exactly what that means in every detail, but, as always, we’re told the important parts. Catholics and others take Holy Communion. The Bread and Wine are truly transformed into Christ’s Body and Blood and we receive Christ in this way. It is an actual physical occurrence that truly changes us and imparts grace into us, but it also reflects the way we’re supposed to become one with God, as he made us. When you eat something, that thing becomes a part of you–if you eat a lamb, the substance of your body will be partially made up of the lamb that you ate. In the same way, with God, we’re supposed to slowly become one with God by receiving him in Holy Communion.
Satan on the other hand, invites us to consume drugs and engage in other sins, which have the opposite effect, of making us less like God and more like Satan, who is himself in complete rebellion against God and has invented a perversion of every form of goodness, what we call sin.

God could achieve this goal of bringing us back into communion with him any way he wants, but he seems to me to be the supreme artist and that’s why I believe he has done it primarily through Holy Communion–because this is such a beautiful way, the most beautiful way perhaps, for him to start bringing us out of our sinful lives and into his perfection. It’s a good thing when we eat good, whole foods and drink healthy substances and become strong in the world and God has simply given us the highest form of consuming food and growing stronger (also a reflection of the manna from Heaven that came to the Jews in the desert). He has made the most important growth, spiritual growth, a higher reflection of how we experience physical growth throughout our lives. It’s quite beautiful and makes perfect sense if explained as a teacher teaching schoolchildren or, better yet, a father teaching his children.

When one is faced with the violent material in the Quran and Hadith and the biographies of Mohammed one must downplay or deny the violence of Mohammed and his henchmen. If one does not deny the violence then practicing Islam becomes an exercise in following the example of a murderous gangster. For most people copying the example of a gangster such as Mohammed would be repulsive. Denying the violence one turns the practice of Islam into simply becoming an obedient producer of new muslims.

“Even though he sees it fly,he insists the duck is a goat”.

There is an actual teaching from muhammed that may be useful as a cure to all those Islamic apologists in denial about the truth of muhammed.
“Drink camel urine. It contains the cure for all ills”.This is an actual hadith.
Maybe those who are in denial about the reality of islam like Mr Aslan, need to follow their founder’s advice and start drinking the sanctified golden liquid that is,according to muhammed,a cure for all ills.Surely muslims must obey their “prophet”?His Sunnah.

Perhaps the camel-urine drinking “prophet” was “on the sauce” when he said:-
“Teach your children to pray at the age of seven and beat them if they don’t at ten”.
No compulsion in islam eh?But what about the children forced to pray?

The future performance of this sick show wiill speak a lot about CNNs audience. Theven event does give rise to some questions….

Will this start a trend of sickos going to India to do the same thing?

I really doubt it. The Aghori are a tiny sect that has little appeal even in Hinduism. Besides eating dead bodies and using them in worship, they have to live in filth. This is a form of asceticism.

Back to the rankings. IF CNn was 2nd to Fox with 787,000 viewers and Fox had 1.6 million-

THEY HAD LESS THAN HALF THE NUMBER THAT FOX HAD- AND CNN HAS BEEN ON THE AIR A COUPLE OR MORE DECADES LESS THAN CNN.

        Is that a bragging point?

The boy Reza has been weaned on camel-piss , can’t seem to get on the wagon…… There is a need for a ‘camel-piss’ anonymous for damaged Muslims….

Doesn’t he have a mosque in Isphahan to visit?????

Islam will always claim to be peaceful regardless of the actual actions of violence , intolerance and mayhem it brings upon the world.

Whoever set up Islam (NOT illiterate, ignorant, gonads-on-the-hoof, Latter-Day Charles Manson called Mohammed) knew that millions or billions of unceasing lies over many years would eventually endanger the entire world.

Who or whatever set up Islam was brilliant beyond anyone who was living at that time.

So who or what could that entity have been, that entity who set up a faux religion to mock everything decent in every other major religion and and to destroy every other religion? Who could that have been …. hmmmmm ….. ?

Instead of trying to convince the Kaffirs, why doesn’t Aslan spend time with the young men wanting to become Jihadis about the “peaceful” nature of Islam.
    – The Progressive Kaffirs are suckers for people like Aslan who make a tremendous amount of money fleecing the gullible.

Perhaps?…

Why, this sounds like the sort of paranoid conspiracy theories that only a right-winger/racist/Trump supporter would believe! /sarc. off

I thought the writer of this piece was doing a great job taking Aslan apart – until I came to the part where he tells us that “Sai Baba” is his guru.

I cannot take anyone seriously who has Sai Baba for a guru.

Besides, he is a dead guru.

        – Yes Singh, he was that and more.

        – It is truly unbelievable after everything that has come to light about this figure, that there are still many Western “intellectuals” who consider him “holy”, a true “guru” and a “saviour”

All true, RCH–as off-putting as their practices are, the Aghoris are *not* hurting others–would that we could say that of pious Muslims.

The entire ‘religion’ of Islam was plagiarized from Chritianity and Judasim by the master crook, camel piss drinker, and goat fornicator Mohammed. Deep down inside Muslims know that their religion is nothing but a sham – a cheap and pirated version of two great religions their shit and false prophet appropriated. Inwardly Muslims lack full confidence about their religion because of it’s many depravaties. They compensate by an overt show of religiosity and by trying to discredit all other religions, especially the three largest – Judaism, Christianity and Hinduism. Muslims, far more than other religious group, attack and condemn other beliefs. They wil go to great lengths, as Arse-lan’s example shows. It’s their way of dealing with deep rooted insecurities about Islam that won’t go way. Insecurities that loom larger with every atrocity and as Islam is put increasingly under the microscope. Another symptom of this inner turmoil of Muslims is their extreme sensitivity to any criticism of their religion. It’s too close to the bone for them. They react in a violent and hostile manner. They will happily criticize other religions but when it’s their turn they can’t take. Crybabies at heart, nothing more. As more and more people learn more and more about Muslims, they despise muslims more, and who can blame them.

This salesman solidly places his bet on the old concept, “One (sucker) is born every minute”.
I suppose he could try to sell his self serving narcissism to the middle east Christian populations, but I think he should do it soon while some are still left. Maybe convince the Mrs. to help sell their “product” around the Arabian peninsula. Heck, if they “buy” it, maybe I’ll consider it too! I’ve heard that area is a bit of a tough sale. Now that I think about it, the salesman may have actually sold me on one of the products of Islam: a “No Solicitors” sign, like they use.
