“A main reason for the trip is to try to strengthen relations with the 1,000-year-old Azhar center that were cut by the Muslim side in 2011 over what it said were repeated insults of Islam by Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict.”
What did Benedict say? Andrea Gagliarducci of the Catholic News Agency explains that after a jihad terrorist murdered 23 Christians in a church in Alexandria 2011, Benedict decried “terrorism” and the “strategy of violence” against Christians, and called for the Christians of the Middle East to be protected.
Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam, Ahmed al-Tayeb, whom Pope Francis welcomed to the Vatican in May, was furious. He railed at Benedict for his “interference” in Egypt’s affairs and warned of a “negative political reaction” to the Pope’s remarks. In a statement, Al-Azhar denounced the Pope’s “repeated negative references to Islam and his claims that Muslims persecute those living among them in the Middle East.”
Benedict stood his ground, and that was that. But in September 2013, al-Azhar announced that Pope Francis had sent a personal message to al-Tayeb. In it, according to al-Azhar, Francis declared his respect for Islam and his desire to achieve “mutual understanding between the world’s Christians and Muslims in order to build peace and justice.” At the same time, Al Tayyeb met with the Apostolic Nuncio to Egypt, Mgr. Jean-Paul Gobel, and told him in no uncertain terms that speaking about Islam in a negative manner was a “red line” that must not be crossed.
So Pope Benedict condemned a jihad attack, one that al-Azhar also condemned, and yet al-Azhar suspended dialogue because of the Pope’s condemnation. Then Pope Francis wrote to the Grand Imam of al-Azhar affirming his respect for Islam, and the Grand Imam warned him that criticizing Islam was a “red line” that he must not cross. And he hasn’t, and won’t. But all those who think that it’s marvelous that the Pope is “respectful” and refuses to “poke them in the eye” should remember: Benedict’s supposed insults to Islam were denunciations of jihad attacks on Christians. Pope Francis won’t be so indelicate.
“Leave them; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14)
“Pope to Egypt to Mend Ties With Islam but Conservatives Wary,” by Philip Pullella, Reuters, April 25, 2017 (thanks to David):
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis hopes to mend ties with Muslims on his trip to Egypt on Friday but faces criticism from church conservatives for meeting Islamic religious leaders after a spate of deadly attacks against Christians.
In a video message to the people of Egypt on Tuesday, Francis said the world had been “torn by blind violence, which has also afflicted the heart of the your dear land” and said he hoped his trip could help peace and inter-religious dialogue.
Security is a primary concern less than three weeks after 45 people were killed in attacks on Coptic Christian churches in Alexandria and Tanta, claimed by Islamic State, on Palm Sunday.
But Francis has insisted on using an ordinary car during his 27 hours in Cairo, continuing his practice of shunning armored limousines in order to be closer to people.
Francis will meet President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi; Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, the world’s most influential center of Sunni Islamic theology and learning; and Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, who barely escaped the Alexandria bombing….
A main reason for the trip is to try to strengthen relations with the 1,000-year-old Azhar center that were cut by the Muslim side in 2011 over what it said were repeated insults of Islam by Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict.
Ties with the center were restored last year after Tayeb visited the Vatican. Tayeb, widely seen as one of the most moderate senior clerics in Egypt, has repeatedly condemned Islamic State and its practice of declaring others as apostates and infidels as a pretext for waging violent jihad.
The Vatican says that Francis, who denounces the idea of violence in God’s name, is convinced that Christian-Muslim dialogue is more important now than ever. Papal aides say a moderate like Tayeb would be an important ally in condemning radical Islam.
In Tuesday’s message, Francis said he hoped the trip could bring “fraternity and reconciliation to all children of Abraham, particularly in the Islamic world, in which Egypt occupies a primary position” and “offer a valid contribution to inter-religious dialogue with the Islamic world”.
WAR OF RELIGION?
The pope’s views are not shared by all Catholics, however. Some conservatives say there should be no dialogue with Islam and that a “war of religion” is in progress.
Italian historian Roberto de Mattei said the Palm Sunday attacks should be “a brusque reality check for Pope Francis”.
The perpetrators were “not unbalanced or crazy but bearers of a religious vision that has been combating Christianity since the seventh century,” De Mattei, editor of the conservative monthly magazine Christian Roots, wrote in an editorial….
A leading Catholic scholar of Islam, Egyptian-born Father Samir Khalil Samir, said that Francis meant well but was naive.
“I think his ignorance of Islam does not help dialogue. He has said often that we know that Islam is a religion of peace but this is simply a mistake,” Samir, who is based in Beirut, told reporters in Rome.
“We know there are certainly times of peace and a willingness for peace on the part of many Muslims but I can’t read the Koran and pretend that it is a book that is oriented towards peace,” he said.
The region has witnessed a massive exodus of Christians fleeing war and persecution in the past few decades, accelerated recently by the rise of Islamic State. Francis said in his message he hoped his visit could be a “consolation and … encouragement to all Christians in the Middle East”.
He will visit Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral to pray for the 28 people killed in a Christmas season blast last year and lay flowers in their memory….

Francis is mentally-challenged.
Jon Leeds says
Pope Francis though he means well, does not know when to keep his mouth shut. He opens it all the time at the worst possible moments, often speaking off the cuff, and even his faithful followers and spokespersons are left holding the bag trying to explain what he “really” meant.
james.mich says
Not that; just dangerously naive and ignorant where Islamonazism is concerned. One need not be a fool or a scoundrel to do harm. Most of what he says is defensible – Islam appears to be a blindspot.

He’s not naive, he’s complicit in the entire jihadist project. Now, he’s in a situation to save face for the institutional church and he won’t be able to. This Argentine Freemason has found his niche in an overly compromised church and can at best, kiss the feet of the Imam in Egypt and pretend he’s doing the humble work of Christ. All his posturing at this point is too little too late and lacks the courage required that Benedict had in telling it like it is………..
Lois Petersen says
You’re right. This article says he is naive. I don’t believe that. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is for One World government. And in all honesty so have the last several popes. Just read their encyclicals. I pray that peoples eyes open up soon.

The train crash between atheist states and Islamist states pope Benedict warns about is a rather optimistic prophesy: Islamist states will crash with any state and anyone anywhere and everywhere, anyway and everyway, and finally they will crash with themselves.

Islam doesn’t just clash with radically atheistic states, but with *all* Infidel polities.

Maybe the Pope is just saying that Islam is a religion of peace…knowing it certainly is not but practicing taqiyya on the Imam. Wouldn’t that be a trick. Then traveling to the Churches with camera’s to the people and the church were the jihadist visited and murdered….laying flowers for the victims…that might just get broadcast to the west….the imam knowing that he is declaring islam is a religion of peace might get a little fazed by what the Pope is actually acknowledging without speaking a “red line word”…maybe he is doing that on purpose for all to know what happened a silent signal. Then he can secretly return to the west and witness what he heard from the Christians and minorities.

Not really. Infidels say that Islam is a religion of peace all the time–either they are clueless or lying.
Muslim institutions do not really care which.
And no–saying that Islam is a religion of peace–whatever the motive–does not benefit Infidels in the long run. It just further allows Muslims to lull Infidels into a false sense of security.

Yet another story of Islamic intolerance: A convert from Islam: In Morocco Christians celebrate Holy Week “hidden” (http://tinyurl.com/kz4me2f)
The same intolerance from government and society against non muslims occurs in all countries with an Islamic majority: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, etc. In these countries, with sharia-based laws, leaving Islam or criticizing it is punished even with death and people of other religions are repressed and discriminated against. (http://tinyurl.com/n2h72hr)
According to Aid for the Church in Need there are “334 million persecuted Christians in the world”, mainly in Islamic countries (http://tinyurl.com/j8ygyus).
Most islamic countries haven’t signed off the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, instead they come up with their own Cairo Declaration of Human Rights which explicitly rejects freedom of conscience and religion and establishes superiority of Islam over other religions.
Some call Islam the religion of peace, but evidence indicates that the most appropriate title is the religion of intolerance, or even more appropriate, the religion of violent intolerance. Terrorist violence and Islamist guerrillas are only manifestations of this intolerance. Islamic terrorism and islamic guerrillas always happen in countries with sizable muslim minorities.
Liberal politicians in the west refuse to accept that islam is intrinsically intolerant and that intolerance often turns out violent, despite mounting evidence all over the world. They continue blindly importing muslims into western countries in order to satisfy big corp requirements of cheap labor, aware that many of those muslims are intolerant and often violent against non muslims. They think they can manage the damage.

The resignation of Pope Benedict, who is still in good health, remains a mystery to me. Worse still is the appointment of his successor.
How come that at this moment in history, as Islam and Muslims are at the peak of their jihad, we have a Pope whose mission seems to be to support Islam and kiss the feet of Muslims while turning his back to the massacres of Christians in Egypt, Syria and Iraq?
And how come that all that coincided with the fact that almost all of Christian leaders of the West do their best to distract the attention of their nations from the threat posed by Islam? Even Trump, whose mission was to wipe out ISIS, confused his supporters by bombing the Syrian air force, which was bombing ISIS?
How come that all the MSM suddenly seem to agree on never associating Islam with violence?
Never been a fan of conspiracy theories .. but is there a huge conspiracy right up at the top?
Monty says
There is a conspiracy. Europe’s economy is so entwined with the Middle East that offending Muslims would be an economic disaster. So they settle for a social disaster instead. It is also spiritual. The bible predicted these events a little under 2,000 years ago. “…..that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. And for this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they might believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness.”
gravenimage says
Even with so many quasi-socialist governments in Europe, Europe is *far* more productive than is the Muslim Middle East. They produce little except oil–and the rest of the world is catching up in that department.
Given all the “foreign aid” the West spends on Dar-al-Islam–and the threat they present to us–I think it would be far more cost-effective for us to cut economic ties.

The difference is that they are not trying to invade the rest of the world (that didn’t go so well last time) and they don’t rob/kill/rape those who are not Japanese. Well, not any more. The Japanese learned something after WW2. The allies stood up to Japan as they stood up to Hitler. The Pope should fearlessly stand up for morality, like when Christ cracked the whip at the money changers in the temple. He should denounce the deliberate misinterpretation of Christ in the Quran, which says Christ did not die on the cross. He should denounce the mischaracterization of Islam as an “Abrahamic faith”, and he should denounce Muhammad as a false prophet, and worse – a murderer, a rapist, and a thief who was aware of the Christian message but denied it to create his own false religion.
Imagine how the world would react… What – a few innocent Christians might be murdered? They are being murdered now as we speak! Let them die for a good cause – because their Pope stood up for Truth. Not for a Pope went to Al Azhar on his knees like a dimmi – shame on him!

The Pope may have authority or decisive influence on Catholicism, but of course none on Islam. His interpretation can be challenged by comparing it with the opinion of influential Muslim scholars.
And either the pope’s interpretation should be rejected or if it is believed, and the interpretation of Islamic Scholars is ALSO believed, that then should be proof of multi-interpret ability of an Islam that has no real leadership-authority defending and enforcing Islam;’s core tenets.
The church is only asking Muslims to condemn Islamic State and terrorism but that is completely useless. As Muslims scholars and leaders can tell their own audiences; “yeah, we condemn Islamic State and it’s terrorism, but we condemn Israel and America and their terrorism MORE.”
Islam has no pope, only Islam scholars, but while even Catholics seem to be capable of contradicting the Pope and stay Catholic, in Islam it is even more allowed, possible and practiced that the leading Islamic scholars are not followed to the letter by Muslims who nevertheless do not get thrown out or leave the faith.
The late Hans Jansen, Arabist (but in essence Islam-expert professor) did consider this a weak point and achillesheel of Islam; lack of doctrinal enforcement and lack of possibility of real eviction out of Islam.
Islam has many “rotten apples” and instead of throwing them out officially, Islam threathens them with death when they want out of it!
All that occurs is that Muslims condemn other Muslims, without any consequences. We outsiders still see all of Islam and all of Muslims in effect prophit from those they condemn.
Logic for this’ All Muslims love Islam and all Muslims thus prophit from terrorist acts, the scaring away of Christians in as far as Islam prophits from this.

If the Pope wants to further peace and understanding between Christians and Muslims, why doesn’t he go to Egypt with a copy of the Qur’an in which he has highlighted with a yellow marker all the exhortations of death, suffering and humiliation to all who disagree with what it contains and obtain an explanation for them.
He won’t because there is no acceptable explanation for such statements in todays modern world.
The Catholic Church virtually ignores the Old Testament and most nominal Christians haven’t read it anyway so he probably thinks Muslims do the same. Many do but many don’t and combined with a crazy political desire for world dominance they attempt to put these evil exhortations into practice.
Unlike the Catholic Church with a leader who claims to be gods infallible representative on Earth and who can “interpret” the scriptures to suit the occasion Islamism has no such single figure so they all have a go and fight to the death over it. That and the primitive tribalism which still exists in Islamic countries is why they are socially backward compared to the West.
The Pope really ought to know better but I guess he knows the games up for religions of any kind and wants to buddy up with a fellow peddler of irrationality ,myth, superstition and magic even though he must or should know it is pure evil !!
