Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Raymond Ibrahim: Islamic Projection: Why Muslims So Hate Infidels

Apr 10, 2017 3:10 pm By Raymond Ibrahim

A little known fact: when Muslims persecute religious minorities in their midst, they often justify it by projecting the worst aspects of Islam onto the “infidels.” A well-known phenomenon, “projection” is defined as “the attribution of one’s own ideas, feelings, or attitudes to other people.” One academic article states, “Projection allows the killer to project his (unacceptable) desire to kill (torture, rape, steal, dominate, etc.) onto some target group or person. This demonizes his target, making it even more acceptable to kill.”

Accordingly, anyone who listens to the last video made by ISIS inciting violence against Egypt’s Copts would think the Christian minority is oppressing the Muslim majority — hence the need for “heroic” ISIS to “retaliate.” Similarly, after ISIS slaughtered 21 Egyptian Christians on the shores of Libya in 2016, it made a video portraying its actions as “revenge” against the Coptic Church, which ISIS bizarrely accuses of kidnapping, torturing, and forcing Muslim women to convert to Christianity — all things Muslims regularly do to Christians in Egypt. (Apparently the killing of nearly 60 Christians in a Baghdad church a few years earlier—which the jihadis then also portrayed as revenge against the Coptic Church’s forced conversion of Muslim women — was not enough).

When a Muslim cleric said that “whenever they [U.S.] invade a Muslim country, they strike on a Sunday. Always,” he, too, was projecting what he knows of Muslim attacks on infidels. Look to almost any report of Muslim mob uprisings against Christians and their churches, especially in Egypt; they are almost always on Fridays — and naturally so: for that is the one day of the week when Muslims congregate in mosques for prayers, only to invariably hear sermons that rile them up against infidels.

But perhaps the best example is Ayat Oraby — the smiley-faced, pink-hijab wearing, Muslim woman and activist with many Muslim followers on social media. In a video she made some months back (around the same time that one authority said Egyptian Christians were suffering attacks “every two or three days”), this Muslim woman who often resides in America sought to foment as much hostility for the Copts as possible; and she did this by accusing them of doing to Muslims what Muslims are always doing to them. After calling the Coptic Church a “bunch of gangsters” and a “total mafia” that “rules [Egypt] behind the curtains,” she accused it of “stockpiling weapons in churches” and “striving to create a Coptic statelet” in an effort to continue waging “a war against Islam.”

Meanwhile, back in the real world — which consists of some 200 nations — Egypt is the 21st worst nation for Christians to live in; there they experience “very high persecution,” according to Open Doors, an international human rights organization. The abduction of Christian women and children and their forced conversion to Islam is par for the course; entire Christian villages and churches are regularly set aflame on the rumor that a Christian somewhere “blasphemed” against Muhammad on social media, or that a Christian man is dating a Muslim woman.

But many Muslims, such as this Ayat Oraby, ever seeing themselves as victims, are blind to such facts; their notions of reality are informed by Islam. And if Islam calls for constant hostility against the “other” — the non-Muslim, the infidel — who must be subverted or subjugated one way or the other, that must mean the “other” is constantly working to subvert and subjugate Muslims. This sort of thinking goes right to the beginning: the 7th century Islamic conquests — those wonderfully “altruistic openings” — are constantly portrayed, not as offensive warfare, but defensive. Muslims supposedly left Arabia, conquering and plundering their way through the Middle East, Egypt, North Africa, Spain, and into France, to preempt the infidels who apparently were preparing to set off for Arabia to snuff out a nascent Islam. Such is how the discipline of history is regularly mocked in Islamic schools around the world.

Let’s return to Ayat Oraby and consider her “projective” claims. She accuses Egypt’s Christians of controlling events “behind the curtains.” This is as ironic a claim as it is old. In 2010, prominent Egyptian cleric Khalid al-Jundi complained that in Egypt “Muslims have fewer rights than Christians, and even do not have the right to worship like Christians.” In reality and as is well known, Christian churches face immense restrictions; just talk of building one sets off mass riots and attacks on Christians. Facts speak plainly: there are 114,000 mosques in Egypt but only 2,000 churches; that’s 57 mosques for every one church, even though Christians are at least ten percent of the population.

Moreover, in a country where Islam reigns supreme; where Sharia (which mandates the subjugation of non-Muslims, a la Koranic verse 9:29) is part of the Constitution; where Copts have been conditioned over centuries to be content with just being left alone — is it reasonable to believe that these selfsame, downtrodden “infidels,” who make up ten percent of the population, are planning a violent takeover of Egypt?

As for Oraby’s claims that Egypt’s Christians are “stockpiling weapons in churches,” and “striving to create a Coptic statelet” to continue waging “a war against Islam,” this is another tired charge. Muhammad Salim al-Awwa, former secretary-general of the International Union for Muslim Scholars, once appeared on Al-Jazeera  and, in a wild tirade, accused the Copts of “stocking arms and ammunitions in their churches and monasteries” — imported from Israel no less, “the heart of the Coptic Cause” — and “preparing to wage war against Muslims.” He warned that if nothing is done, the “country will burn,” inciting Muslims to “counteract the strength of the [Coptic] Church.”

In reality, all that ever burns are Coptic churches at the hands of Muslim mobs and terrorists — as when nearly 70 churches were attacked and many destroyed following the ouster of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Muhammad Morsi. Moreover, it is Muslims who smuggle and stockpile weapons, including in mosques, in order to fuel their separatist jihads to secede from “infidel” powers (e.g., Chechen or Mindanao jihadi separatist attempts against Russia and the Philippines respectively; during the Muslim Brotherhood retaliation against the Sisi government, vast stores of weapons were regularly discovered in mosques).

As Coptic activist Mounir Bishai once put it: “Suddenly we [Copts] have shifted from complaints to self-defense, from demanding [our] rights to [trying to] convince the public that we are not depriving others of their rights… now we are being accused of amassing weapons… How have we suddenly turned from persecuted into persecutors, from the weak [party] into the strong and tyrannical [one], from the attacked [party] into the infamous attackers, and from the poor [party] into the rich exploiters? How did these lies become widespread, without us gaining any ground or improving our situation one whit?”

Even in the field of theology, Muslims are apt to project Islam’s notions of jihad and “martyrdom,” fighting to the death for Islam, onto Christian theology. For example, in the midst of the accusation that the Copts are stockpiling weapons to wage war on Muslims, the Al Azhar Scholars Front, which consists of Al Azhar alumni, once declared: “Christianity…is constantly defining its overt and covert policy of eliminating all its rivals or degrading [the followers of other religions] and depriving them of every reason to live so that they will be forced to convert to Christianity.”

In fact, this is precisely what Islam does: through jihad, “eliminate all its rivals,” or, through the institution of dhimmitude, “degrade [the followers of other religions] and deprive them of every reason to live so that they will be forced to convert to” Islam. This is both historically and doctrinally demonstrable.

Similarly, when Bishop Bishoy declared that Egypt’s Christians are reaching the point of martyrdom due to the increase in their persecution, this, too, was thoroughly “Islamicized” as a declaration of “war-to-the-death,” including by al-Awwa, who, during his aforementioned Al Jazeera rant, asserted that “Father Bishoy declared that they would reach the point of martyrdom, which can only mean war. He said, ‘If you talk about our churches, we will reach the point of martyrdom.’ This means war!”

Of course, the notion that a martyr is someone who wages and dies in jihad, or “holy war,” is intrinsic to Islam (e.g., Koran 9:111). Even the authoritative Hans Wehr Arabic-English Dictionary translates shahid (“martyr”) as “one killed in battle with infidels.” On the other hand, Christian martyrdom has always meant being persecuted and killed for refusing to recant Christianity — and this is precisely the definition that has for centuries applied to Egypt’s Christians, the definition that Bishop Bishoy clearly meant (see this article for more on the important differences between Christian and Muslim notions of martyrdom).

To recap:

  • Muslims regularly abduct, abuse, brainwash, and compel Christian girls to convert — and now Christians are accused of doing the exact same thing;
  • Muslims regularly smuggle and stockpile weapons, including in their mosques — and now Christians are accused of doing the exact same thing;
  • Muslims are constantly either trying to break away or conquer infidel nations — and now Egypt’s Christians are accused of doing the exact same thing;
  • Muslims seek to eliminate or subjugate the infidel according to the doctrine of jihad and dhimmitude — and now Christians are portrayed as seeking the exact same thing;
  • Islamic violence regularly pops up on Fridays, and now Christians (or merely Westerners) are accused of targeting Islam on Sundays.
  • Islamic martyrdom means killing others and oneself while waging jihad to empower Islam — and now Christian martyrdom, which has always meant accepting death rather than the renunciation of faith, is defined as the exact same thing.

This lengthy excursion into Islamic projections onto Christians using Egypt as a paradigm serves another purpose: it suggests that, if civilizational projection so pervades the Muslim world, despite reality, could that also be why the people of the West — most of whom either profess Christianity or are at least influenced by its ethics and mores — cannot accept the realities of Islam? Because they, too, project the ideals of their religious heritage — one that preaches love, tolerance, and forgiveness for enemies — onto Muslims and Islam?

Yes–we see this all the time here. Infidels just trying to survive are smeared as “oppressing” Muslims. It is just ludicrous.

Islam–violence and whining false victimhood–what a sickening combination.

You know Havoc, I think that too. Recently I found an area to live in where there are no muslims and it’s great –
No whining, no mosques, no hate speach, no “look at me I’m a victim” and best of all…no women covered from head to toe.

Silly me, here I was thinking that sincere piousness and adherance to religion was based on a change from the inside out and doing good to others as opposed to islam which requires only its women to cover up -and then proceeds to subjugate everyone else through their demands. Like in Birmingham in a particular muslim majority area, dog owners have been warned as muslims are offended…again.
(My neighbour has had her dog spat at by muslim neighbours, sadly.) It’s surely how muslim enclaves come about.

I so get this. We as individuals tend to do this. We criticize things in others that may or may not be there when actually we are just projecting our own faults and issues onto someone else. If people stopped doing this and looked at themselves and especially if they follow Christ, repented, the world would become much more peaceful.

Jean, this goes *way* beyond normal human tendencies with Islam.

No Muslims can rationally believe that the beaten Copts are threatening them, nor that Infidels wanting to live freely are oppressing Muslims.

        Apr 11, 2017 at 4:50 pm

Your view of “rational” is Judaeo-Christian based. Read Harry Richardson’s book “The Story of Mohammed” to get an under-the-covers look into the Muslim thought process. This book is a kind of Islam 101 introduction, explaining the life of Mohammed and how he structured his “religion” (Islam) and “law” (sharia) to ensure that his medieval, tribal thought process could not be questioned or changed. Metaphorically speaking, quit expecting dogs to think like cats.

And yes, Christians, and also Jews, in the West project their lovey-dovey ideas onto Muslims. And that’s precisely why the West is going to hell in a hand-basket, thanks to insane immigration policies and other liberal foolishness. Love the stranger, love one’s neighbor, love your enemy, the Golden Rule, turn the other cheek, etc. etc. (where’s my barf bag?) Leftist liberalism is just the secular cover for this sort of ethical generosity, taken to an illogical and very unreciprocated extreme. It doesn’t work with Islam, because in Islam one does not love an infidel back. That’s why mothers who have had their children saved gratis by Israeli doctors still want to see them die as martyrs killing Israelis.
When it comes to Islam, forget Jesus and Moses. Just listen to Leo “the lip” Durocher: Nice guys finish last.

Going to the Christian Watch List website was interesting. Egypt, as the article notes, is 21st with a 65/100 score for persecuting Christians. Right behind them at 64/100 are the Palestinian Territories. Israel, to no one’s surprise but those spewing anti-Zionist hate, is not on the list at all.
One way to look at the plight of the Copts – who I think are additionally hated by their Arab brethren because they are descended from the pre-Islamic invasion Egyptians – is that without Jews, they were the next obvious target of Islamic projection. Perhaps the Copts should demand their own statelet, after all they are the indigenous people and can realistically only look to themselves for protection – unless, that is, Egypt rapidly becomes, against all the evidence and odds, a true liberal democracy with equal rights assured all of its citizens. As the Jews learned, only in a state of your own can you live freely and without the fear that comes from powerlessness.

Islam contains an intolerant, discriminatory doctrine that is ‘ESSENTIAL’, DEFINED, LEGALLY BINDING, PRECISE and OFFICIAL.
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ – (Allegiance and Disassociation) is an Islamic doctrine that is very similar to apartheid.
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is an ‘essential doctrine’ (usul ud-deen). ‘Essential’ means that all Muslims must believe and practice al Walaa wal Baraa as a condition of being admitted to paradise.
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is a highly developed, well-supported and canonical part of Islam approved by the consensus of Islamic jurists.
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is legally binding and obligatory upon all Muslims.
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is precisely defined by Islamic jurists and is not a nebulous idea
    • ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ is an official Islamic doctrine and considered the second most important doctrine in Islam.
Definition of ‘Al Walaa wal Baraa’ from Islamic sources:
    • from “The Islaamic Concept of al-Walaa’ wal-Baraa’” by Khalid El-Gharib: …“[iv] to show enmity to those who show enmity to Allaah and His Messenger” (i.e. Muslims are to visibly demonstrate their enmity or towards the kufaar – non-Muslims)
    • from a lecture given by Sheikh Abdullah al-Faisal (H.A.): “The implication of al-Baraa is that one HATES for the sake of Allah (SWT)…Al-Baraa means to recognize who your enemies are and to HATE them and EXTERMINATE them in their Endeavour to get rid of your Deen, al-Islam…Al-Baraa is to HATE the people who propagate Baatil (falsehood)—the Muslim should HATE them and (at least desire to) KILL them when the time comes.” (i.e. the hatred of Muslims toward the kufaar is for the purpose of ethnic cleansing)

Examples of Baraa from Historic Islamic Leaders:
    • from Ahmad Sirhindi (1564-1624): “The honour of Islam lies in insulting kufr and kafirs. One who respects the kafirs dishonours the Muslims… The real purpose of levying jiziya on them is to humiliate them to such an extent that they may not be able to dress well and to live in grandeur. They should constantly remain terrified and trembling. It is intended to hold them under contempt and to uphold the honour and might of Islam.”
    • from ibn Taymiyya, “Book of Emaan”: “… true believers show animosity and hatred towards disbelievers and never support them.”
    • from Umar Sulayman ‘Abd-Allaah al-Ashqar, “Belief in Allah”: “The Muslim should regard the Kuffaar as enemies and hate them because of their kufr, just as he hates their kufr (disbelief) itself.”

One girl who worked at the grocery was friendly and smiled and would chat a bit. But wearing a hijab isn’t proof that the mind inside it accepts Islam all the way down. In fact, some of those hijabis don’t even believe in Islam. 🙁

Indeed, the Coptic Christians of Egypt should establish an independent state in Sinai that would be an ally of the Jewish State of Israel. These Christians could protect the monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai and help vanquish the Islamic State terrorists running free in the territory right now. It would also neighbour the important Suez Canal to the West and be close enough to Israel for Cheistian overland pilgrimages to Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. A western State of Sinai would also have kilometres of beaches on the Mediterranean and on the Gulf of Aqaba to create world class beach resorts for the Christians of Europe and the Americas.

A state that I feel that Israel would help in its defense.

A state that Israel would help with economics, technology, education, health, infrastructure, democracy though I do believe it is truly up to the Coptic people to ascertain to just what level of aid is needed and remain independent.

Also Israel to be careful in not making the new state dependent on them at a great cost, as a thriving neighbour would be the aim.

        A terrific idea.

        “Aegyptia Nova”.

The Gaza Strip would have to be part of such a state (it contains quite a lot of viable agricultural land). ALL Mohammedans would be turfed out into Islamic Egypt, to fill the space left behind by the departing Copts.

Population exchange. *Complete* population exchange – NO Muslims to remain in the territory the Infidels are accepting, just as NO infidels will remain in the territory that will become wholly Islamic. Unlike when India was divided, or when Mandatory ‘Palestine’ was divided, which in both cases has left the Infidel portion – modern India, modern Israel – with a large and dangerous Mohammedan Fifth Column, even while the non-Muslim presence in the Muslim portion (Bangladesh and Pakistan; Jordan) steadily dwindles away because of Muslim mistreatment.

and the thing is: the new entirely-non-Islamic ‘Aegyptia Nova” would NEVER need to fear attack from the Israel side of its border, and Israel wouldn’t need to worry about being attacked from the Copt side of the border. They would only have to worry about jihadis sneaking over the borders from those parts of their boundaries that fronted onto the dar al Islam. But it would be really nice to have at least part of one’s boundary with a friendly fellow Infidel state.

Muslims are getting uglier by the day but stronger and more influential. Christians in the Middle East may become extinct in one generation without one drop of tears shed for them. Muslims do not want them and the Christians in the West do not want to help them.

The main concern of the church leaders is to appease Muslims and invite their imams to read humiliating verses from the Quran in their churches.

You guys should get your priorities right: your first enemy is not Muslims but the enemy within. I don’t say the liberal or the left because the enemy exists across the political spectrum.

This is not going to change unless you do something revolutionary. your governments do not listen to you not because they are idiots but because everything is going according to their plans ( which we do not understand). Your governments know well that you will not do anything substantial that could make a difference because you are programmed to think through democracy.

It is depressing but you should expect that nothing to change until the Islamic take over, and then everything will change.

The traitors within, the PMs who visit mosques with piety – these are the first enablers we should repel.

Since then His demands for His true followers have been revealed to my mind:

    1) Any male not dressed completely in brown is to be killed. They are to be hung by their ankles, and then have their throats cut, causing their blood to fall onto the earth, pleasing Brown by creating a glorious rich maroon stain on the ground which will serve them well in the next world. Such is Brown’s absolute mercy.

    2) Any female not wearing brown (or combining other colours with brown) shall be raped. If the Brown-Shirts find this task too inconvenient at the time, they may kill them as though they were male.

    3) As yet we have no written laws, but still, if anyone does not accept my vision and revelations based solely on the words of Brown’s servants, the most glorious Brown-Shirts, they are to punished as above, that they will receive Brown’s mercy after death.

    4) Brown’s servants shall observe the following social convenients: no marriage under the age of six, items brown in colour may never be burned.

My religion was at first rejected for tax-exempt status, but soon my Brown-Shirt flock will occupy these government positions so the legislation will pass and Brown will be worshiped in all of the world!

    Stay Brown!

All criminals portray them selves as victims, and their victims as the criminals who forced them to commit their crimes!

It’s “How the Devil’s greatest trick was to pretend he doesn’t exist:”
    – BY playing the victim!

Maybe we should create a write-up describing a new religion filled with command/demands for murder/rape/slavery/robber; then try to get the Supreme Court to acknowledge its right for tax-exempt status.

    Not even a chance.

I lived in Egypt for several years during the reign of Mubarak. It was not ideal but it was much better then now. I want to relate an incident: as a painter I especially went to Egypt to sketch some of the most impressive temples of the ancient world. Three female art teachers (in Luxor) saw my works and invited me for coffee which I accepted. One was Muslim a d the other two Copts. When the Copts left the myslim told me how she converted to Islam: she read three books written by a Muslim writer -one on Christianity, one on Judaism and one on Islam. Then I asked her if her parents are Muslims: yes. If most of her friends are Muslim? Yes. You can’t learn about Judaism from a Muslim priest. She had no answer. The depths of ignorance….

It’s all about carnal pleasure! Mohamed said a man can marry as many women as he can afford. He can
have SEX slaves, and slave girls too. They claim to follow the 10 commandments, yet they glaringly omit the 7th, “Thou shalt NOT commit ADULTERY!” Since Christians follow the word of God, Who said: “One man, one woman,” they passionately hate us. It’s been that way since mohamed crawled out from under his rock, swinging his unholy scimitar across Christian necks.

    Malik,

The only reason America’s military does any strike is to stop groups like ISIS or Assad’s gas attacks.

I can understand your frustration with the airstrikes. But we can’t do nothing, because then ISIS will kill many more people–the fact no one intervened in 2014 is part of the reason ISIS got so much land and murdered whole villages, families….airstrikes aren’t ideal at all, but we don’t have much choice if we’re going to stop ISIS from getting stronger and killing thousands more people.

American soldiers don’t aim to kill civilians at all. Terror groups like ISIS or Boko Haram or Al Qaeda on the other hand target civilians on purpose.
Actually, ISIS has been known to force civilians to be human shields in Mosul, just so they can blame the west if there are deaths, when in reality most of the victims would still be alive if ISIS had not kidnapped them and kept them prisoners in a dangerous area.

No American wants innocent people to get killed in airstrikes—we don’t want Muslims or Christians or anyone to get killed. The real fault lies with terrorists who use those poor people are human shields in the first place.
For whatever it’s worth, me and many other Americans I know don’t consider Middle Easterners “devil worshiping terrorists” at all. I know there are good and bad people in any culture; and many of us pray that middle-easterners will be freed from ISIS and not have to worry about airstrikes ever again.

    A little off topic:

It’s a pity the Copts don’t have their own state. It seems to me they have at least as good a case as Israel.

They do have their own state – but at present, it is occupied, and has been for 1,380 years.

holy crap this recap- wow…. it sounds like the democrat party — always lying and accusing anyone and everyone that gets in their way of the very things and actions they, themselves, are doing, all for greed, power, and control…..

hmmm just saying, — as we all can see since Trumps been in office how corrupt and deceitful this party/organization truly is and to what level of deceit and lies they will sink to in order to achieve their one-sided shameful agenda/goals. This recap IS truly what they are all about.

They are not about pride in America or the American people- us, the true citizens of our Country as one people- the America people, but are driven by their shameful greedy power hungry mindset of control.

Shame on all that have no integrity, morals, conscience, or brains… those that refuse and fail to see the truth in real time…. Denial will hurt us all due to the failures of so many to face and see the truth honestly! God help us.
