Indonesia: Jakarta’s Christian governor guilty in “blasphemy” trial, gets two years prison

May 9, 2017 5:25 pm By Robert Spencer

Ahok committed the cardinal sin of being a Christian in a position of authority. Islamic law forbids non-Muslims to hold authority over Muslims. That Ahok was governor of Jakarta made something like this show trial inevitable. That Islamic supremacists got him on blasphemy, and had to get him in the first place for the crime of being a Christian in authority, is an indication of how far Indonesia has moved from its supposedly “moderate” character.

“Jakarta governor Ahok found guilty in landmark Indonesian blasphemy trial,” by Ben Westcott, CNN, May 9, 2017:

(CNN)Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok, has been sentenced to two years in prison, after being found guilty of blasphemy in a trial seen as a test of Indonesia’s religious tolerance.

In April, prosecutors had called for the blasphemy counts to be dropped in exchange for a lesser charge of “spreading hate,” but the judges appear to have ignored that recommendation.

The controversial Chinese Christian politician was put on trial in December over accusations that he insulted Islam while campaigning for re-election. He repeatedly denied the charges.

Ahok was detained immediately after the verdict and taken to the Cipinang detention center in East Jakarta, local media reported. He said he would immediately appeal the court’s decision.

The Jakarta governor sparked controversy in late 2016 after quoting a verse from the Quran to prove to his supporters that there were no restrictions on Muslims voting for a non-Muslim politician.

Almost no one who has been charged under the blasphemy law has ever escaped conviction, associate professor of Indonesian politics at the Australian National University Greg Fealy told CNN.

“The blasphemy law has really been a blight on the rule of law and democracy in Indonesia for decades,” he said, adding that “the fact that Ahok was charged at all was really a product of massive street demonstrations that frightened the government into acting.”

Growing conservatism

…While Indonesia has built a reputation as a tolerant, diverse nation, experts say Ahok’s conviction is the latest example of the country’s growing conservatism.

Recent years have seen large anti-LGBT protests in Jakarta in early 2016, a push to criminalize homosexual sex and passionate reactions to allegations of blasphemy.

An estimated 200,000 people converged on the center of the Indonesian capital to demand the arrest of its minority-Christian governor on November 4.

Since an edited video of Ahok’s remarks was released, hundreds of thousands of Muslim Indonesians have protested against him on the streets of Jakarta, with many calling for his jailing or even execution.
Roads near the Agriculture Ministry where the verdict was due to be delivered were closed from Monday evening in preparation, local media reported….

I thought it was the opposite. The verse he quoted was 5:51. Let not the Muslims take the unbelievers for friends or protectors. So in fact that verse is a restriction on Muslims voting for non Muslims!

    – this concept of “spreading hate” (analysis, discussion and any criticism of Islam) is chilling

    – many Western countries now have laws to the same effect and for the same purpose i.e. criminalizing the rejection of Islam

@Gwen well said. Of course Ahok couldn’t be charged with spreading hate, because he praised Islam, arguing that it is a religion of toleration – “quoting a verse from the Quran to prove to his supporters that there were no restrictions on Muslims voting for a non-Muslim politician”

Mainstream Muslims yet again prove *they know and accept* that Islam is a violent fascist ideology.

  4. Stan Lee says

The Indonesian Mayor of Jakarta, Indonesia receives a prison sentence for two years under the penalty of “blasphemy.” Apparently, a provision in the koran precludes any non-Muslim from presiding over Muslim constituents, and that is called “blasphemy” by Islam.
But now, let us leap to London, England, where a Muslim Mayor presides over its citizens who are a mixed religion population, and the UK is still more Christian than Muslim. Of course, for England, it doesn’t matter, the UK took in more than its share of Muslims and one of them was elevated to Mayor of London.
This is certification that Islam believes and practices bigotry. Yes, “the religion of peace” is as bigoted as can be, yet Christians do not call for London’s Mayor to be imprisoned under the charge of “blasphemy” as Islam would to a non-Muslim Mayor.
Islam’s claim as “religion of peace” is, once more a lie for only Muslims to believe. But, they want to believe anything that would describe Islam as endowed with privilege over all other faiths, and that is the big lie..
Muslims are compelled to believe such malarkey, whereas Christians are FREE to believe in the positive or negative.
The case is being made with issues as described above, that Islam needs religious legislation to have “superiority” over all other faiths, when in fact, Islam has not perfected a better wooden clothes pin or anything else in its 1400 years. But, they manage to stay current with methods of torture and killing.

This is a perfect example how blasphemy laws will be used everywhere they are implemented… unjustly, maliciously and as revenge.

What better way to absolve a debt? What better way to remove a political opponent? What better way to get someone in jail while you plot to take away his business or buy his property at a low price?

All blasphemy laws, I expect, are being abused by Muslims in all 13 countries where they are on the books. Nothing stops Muslims from bringing malicious blasphemy suits.

I live in Australia. We have around 300 million Muslims at our front door. This is the nation that Obama and Mr Penny consider the ideal “Moderate” Muslim nation. There has always been “tension” (read village burning, murder and evictions of Christians) between Muslims and Christians, apart from Bali which functions pretty much as a separate country. For now. The “tension” used to be restricted to provinces, especially Aceh, that instituted Sharia (coming to a country near you!). Now the sanitised and watered down Islam is being replaced with the real thing. This was utterly predictable. Australia’s pathetic response got along the lines of not increasing tensions with Islam.

      Yes, this is so true.

It is amazing that the world is silent on the Indonesian (Muslim) domination of West Timor (Christian) and subjugation of West Papua (Christian). Millions of people under the boot, still striving for decolonization and we don’t hear anything from the virtuous western media or cashed up NGOs.

US progressives and Europeans need to remember:
“Indonesia has an armory that includes some of the most modern and formidable weapons systems from the West and Russia. Its arsenal includes 420 aircraft of all types, 152 helicopters, 221 naval ships, 468 tanks, 1,089 armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs), and 80 towed artillery. GFP 2016 country-by-country data shows Indonesia fields some 476,000 active military personnel, the largest active military force in all of Asean, supported by some 400,000 active reservists.”

Indonesia has always had hot bed areas of Muslim conservatism, Aceh is one example. But it was surprisingly liberal in other areas. I speak from experience having visited several times. The nation’s constitution guarantees religious freedom, the only requirement being the “belief in God”. That has given the Christian and Hindu populations some protection. But the Christian population is rising and in the 1990’s there were Islamist attacks on Christian areas like the Spice Islands and in Sulawesi. Many Christians were killed. This latest court victory will only encourage the forces of Islam to step up their demand for an Islamic Republic.

    • Leefromoz says

      May 10, 2017 at 3:55 am

“The nation’s constitution guarantees religious freedom” – beware the sophistry used by Islamofascist countries. In fact the US Dept of State reports on Indonesia:

“The Ministry of Religious Affairs extends official status to six religious groups: Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism.” – see https://www.state.gov/j/drl/rls/irf/2010/148869.htm

Not recognizing Judaism (for example), leads to Jews having to register as another religion – for example see one Jew’s story at http://www.insideindonesia.org/being-jewish-in-indonesia

“My National Identity Card lists me as a Christian, since every citizen is required to profess one of six prescribed religions by law – none of which is Judaism.”

Islamofascist countries also abuse non-Muslims by stealth, and the Dept of State notes of Indonesia:

“During the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the government…failed to prevent abuse and discrimination against religious groups by other private actors and at times failed to punish perpetrators of violence.”

In this way the Muslim criminals governing Indonesia tacitly oversee numerous atrocities designed to destroy non-Muslims and their religions (many of which atrocities have been reported in Jihad Watch) while claiming innocence to the international community.

It’s incredible that an Islamofascist country which formally denies religious identity to Jews (among many other religious people) is not subject to international pressure commensurate with a regime which echoes Nazi persecutions.

        • Leefromoz says

@Baucent According to Indonesian national identity cards, there are actually zero Jews in Indonesia – lol. You see, this is the tactic of Islamofascism from Muhammad onwards – always discriminate against non-Muslims, always tax them more, look the other way as they’re murdered and raped and their houses of worship destroyed, and eventually the world will only be filled with Muhammad’s rapist death-cult.

Don’t allow yourself to become an empty sock-puppet to be filled by the manipulative Islamofascist hand.

Had Ahok lost the mayoral race, a blasphemy law conviction would just be another human rights violation. In addition, if he’d won, it would have nullified that.

With the near certainty of the blasphemy conviction, the Muslim candidate probably figured he had the mayorship in the bag.

It would be so easy in a saner world for the West to unite and cut diplomatic relations with Indonesia, including forbidding tourist travel to the islands until they let this guy go free. You would see Indonesia snap out of it just like that and let this man go. We don’t stand up for Christians? At least in non-violent ways, in keeping with the spirit of Christianity? Same thing anywhere Christians are persecuted.

The West could do so much if they all fully understood the threat. Cut all Islamic countries loose until they change their laws to stop the persecution of Christians, death for apostasy, and all the other barbaric practises. Isolate all Islamic countries and leave them to themselves. Cut them off from the world banking system, the international telephone exchange, everything. For each step they take in the right direction, restore a privilege. Each step in the wrong direct take one away. Let them know in no uncertain terms that they are considered barbarians who are not yet ready to join the world. We don’t need their stinking oil. Let them drown in it.

The difficulty is that before putting the dar al Islam properly in quarantine, it would be necessary for the USA, China and Russia to disentangle themselves from current entanglements with, respectively, Islamic Pakistan and Islamic Iran… and then act, in concert, massively, overwhelmingly, to *annihilate* Pakistan’s nuke capability *and* Iran’s little nuke project. Turn all nuke-related installations into enormous smoking holes in the ground.

NO mohammedan country should be permitted to have any further access to *any* sort of modern infidel-created weaponry; any location where a mohammedan entity was thought to be working on developing Weapons of Mass Destruction would have to be annihilated as soon as identified.

Just for that statement, every branch of Hizb ut Tahrir currently within any Western country should be shut down, and banned, and all known Hizb ut Tahrir operatives, agents, proxies and franchises evicted from said Western countries, permanently.

No known Hizb ut Tahrir member should be permitted to remain on our soil, nor should any be permitted to *enter*.

And then we do the same to the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, Hezbollah, and the rest…

The Ummah is an Organisation that 1/ has in its rule-book, and frequently enacts, the death penalty for defectors and 2/ has in its rule-book, and frequently enacts, savage punishments – up to and including death (see Theo Van Gogh; see the murder of apostates and ‘blasphemers’ in Bangladesh – on any person anywhere, member or non-member, who *dares* to question, criticise or in any way oppose the teachings, goals, and personnel of the Organisation…. or who is merely *accused* of having done so, whether they in fact have done so, or not.

An Organisation whose membership feel entitled, licensed, to KILL 1/ defectors and 2/ member and non-member critics of the Organisation, is NOT an Organisation I want in operation in my country.

In what does Islam differ from an organised crime gang, or ‘family’? Only in sheer numbers and the fact that its vicious activities – slaving, raping, robbing, and mass-murdering – are ostensibly done at the behest and in order to please its bloodthirsty divinity, and in emulation of its bloodthirsty and violent warlord Founder, long deceased.

For me, the apostasy law of Islam alone is a ‘deal-breaker’, the thing that tells me I don’t want card-carrying adherents of Islam in my country; add to that the blasphemy law, which like the apostasy law is *very much* alive and well in the attitudes and conduct of many Muslims *and* in the legal system of many Muslim countries, and you’ve got a *double-whammy* ‘deal-breaker’.

Indonesia is always touted as an example of Islamic tolerance in a muslim country.

If this is tolerance, do we want to see intolerance?

Citizens of countries like Canada, which is considering making “Islamophobia” legally a criminal act, must step back and look at who they have elected and consider the ramifications of allowing criticism of Islam to be criminalized.

Gays and women especially will be targets for Islamic militants and Sharia advocates. Only truthful criticism of Islam can prevent abuse of gays and women by radical Islamists.
