At Todd Green’s lecture Sunday, Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan Riggs said: “My fantasy is that we will have four or five people sitting in a room with Robert Spencer, and the other 2,500 members with Jerome at his rally. I think that’s what we can do to counter the fear that a speaker like this can bring to this community.”
Riggs should be ashamed. If the Muslims at the university really think I am not telling the truth, they should come and engage me in discussion during the Q and A, and prove me wrong. They can’t, so they’re boycotting, and instead of exhorting students to engage unwelcome and unpopular ideas and deal with them on a rational basis, the president of the university is encouraging them.
In this letter responding to alumni threats over my appearance, Riggs uncritically accepts and retails the defamatory and libelous falsehoods that I am “bigoted” and “hateful,” and somehow endanger Muslim students.
I hereby challenge President Riggs: prove your statements with quotations from my own writings, not from smear pieces from the Southern Poverty Law Center or other far-Left groups that have no intention of treating their targets fairly. Substantiate your characterizations of my work from my work, or retract and apologize. Also, I invite you to come to the lecture tonight, if you don’t end up canceling it, and if I am not shouted down by the Left-fascist thugs you are enabling and encouraging, then I challenge you to find any “hatred” or “bigotry” in anything I say.
I do hope you will take up my challenge, but obviously you will not do so. For being a president of a college who actively discourages the consideration of views that dissent from the establishment line, and actively discouraging critical thinking and free inquiry, you should be made to resign in disgrace. Instead, you will no doubt be hailed as a heroine by your Left-fascist peers and colleagues.
“President Janet Morgan Riggs responds to open letter from alums on Robert Spencer,” by Janet Morgan Riggs, Gettysburg College President The Gettysburgian, May 1, 2017:
Editor’s Note: The following letter is a response from College president Janet Morgan Riggs to the open letter sent by 375 alums urging President Riggs to not allow Robert Spencer to speak on Wednesday.
I want to begin by thanking those who signed the petition requesting that we rescind our invitation to Robert Spencer for caring enough about Gettysburg College to speak out. To say this is a complex situation would be an understatement.
Many Gettysburgians have expressed perspectives about whether or not Robert Spencer should be permitted to speak on our campus. Some think we should have denied YAF’s request to invite him and that we should have over‐ruled Student Senate’s thoughtful deliberations which led them to make the decision to approve this event. I have also heard from many who believe that allowing Robert Spencer to speak is the right thing to do, despite the fact that they find his views to be offensive and/or abhorrent.
I don’t know if our alumni who signed the petition have seen the letter I sent to campus about this, but you can find it here:
This letter was intended to provide some information to members of the campus community about the decision‐making process, the challenge of balancing our values, and the additional speaker that was invited.
We are concerned for the Muslim members of our community and have met with Muslim students to talk about what we might do to support them. We have also reached out to Muslim members of our faculty and staff, and some faculty members have reached out to our Muslim students to offer their personal support. Discussions are being held in classes, and students are planning a solidarity rally to be held at the same time that Spencer will be speaking—not as a protest of the speech, but as a way of showing their support for the Muslim community.
I appreciate the passion that our alumni have expressed on both sides of this controversy. It’s quite clear that our alumni are not united in their viewpoints. In one of the letters I received supporting the decision to allow Robert Spencer to speak, one of our graduates quoted American Civil Liberties Union National Legal Director David Cole: “For the future of our democracy, we must protect bigoted speech from government censorship. On college campuses, that means that the best way to combat hateful speech is through counter‐speech, vigorous and creative protest, and debate, not threats of violence or censorship.”
This is an extraordinarily complicated and challenging situation, one that is being played out on college campuses across the nation. I can assure you that we are giving this a tremendous amount of thought and attention, and I am pleased that our alumni care enough about Gettysburg College to voice their perspectives.
Sincerely,
Janet Morgan Riggs
President

Maybe this Janet Morgan Riggs should go live in Syria or Afghanistan for a year and see how that works out. I have never seen such liberal ignorance in my entire life. Instead of researching the truth about these Muslims and their cult, they reach out and placate and sympathize that they supposed are being so mistreated and misunderstood. These people are ignorant and delusional. Since she is an academic, she should be embracing knowledge and research and truth. The more I see this garbage, the more I wonder what these Muslims have over these braindead people.

We can focus on those words, but not regarding free speech on campus — instead on the commands for subjugation and violence by FULLY OBEDIENT, ORTHODOX, ALLAH-LOVING SLAUGHTERERS WHO HAVE TAKEN THE LIVES OF SO MANY INNOCENT PERSONS.

Indeed. Had she bothered to read any of Robert’s work with an open mind, she would quickly realise that there is nothing to “fear” and no need to sabotage his lecture.
But as always, this is a case of protecting yourself from smear and defamation by siding with those using threats and violence – rather than standing up for freedom of speech. Here’s something useful to talk about, some of that good intellectual dialog stuff, should Spencer ever actually make his presentation at this nothing college:
Congress just made part of the defense $ in the CR budget approved yesterday contingent on submitting a plan to defeat ISIS. Well, by Moslem history and standard practice that’s gonna call for either mass civilian casualties, or door-to-door combat, or both. But the real point is that the U.S. troops aren’t fighting ISIS, they’re fighting Islam. More properly put, they’re fighting the present day end of a 1,400 year long war called jihad. They’re fighting a defensive war, one they didn’t start. And they’re doing it alone, the other Infidel nations are watching from the safety of home. Spencer, if he ever presents there, should talk about the continuity, the whole, and of course that’s it’s all commanded in the scriptures.

The Law of Evidence embodies principles for getting at the truth. At play in the Gettysburg College left-fest are at least two of them. The Best Evidence Rule, “Bring before the trier of facts [judge or jury] the best evidence available.” The Rule Against Hearsay.
The college is violating both.
mortimer says
The college is clearly abandoning the pursuit of evidence, facts, sound reasoning and truth and instead pursuing Marxist propaganda and Leftist party doctrine.
The purpose of the ‘UNIVERSITY’ is to pursue ‘UNIVERSAL’ ideas that are valid everywhere and at all times.
Islam clearly mandates WARFARE AGAINST THE DISBELIEVER. Gettysburg College is trying to hide the fact, evidence and truth about JIHAD in order to defend a Marxist agenda of promoting anarchy and undermining Western civilization. This war against the Western culture of ideas, facts and reason is called ‘Cultural Marxism’.

If Janet Morgan Riggs actually took the time to investigate the things which Robert Spencer quotes, she would be surprised to see that it is all factual.
Here are some things for Janet Morgan Riggs to investigate:
1. Does Qur’an 9:29 calls for warfare against and subjugation of unbelievers?
2. Is chapter 9 of the Qur’an said to be one of the last revealed, and does this Medina chapter abrogate earlier peaceful Meccan chapters?
3. Is the Qur’an said to be the unchanged word of “Allah”, and is the message said to be valid for all time?
4. Are the Qur’an’s violent versus prescriptive compared to the Bible’s which are descriptive?
5. How do Islamic scholars interpret versus like Qur’an 9:29? Can this verse be found in books like the Shaafi manual on Islamic law “Reliance of the Traveller”? If so, what does it say about this verse?
6. What do the four major schools (Hanafi, Shaafi, Hanbali and Maliki) on Islamic law say about Qur’an 9:29?
7. Is Islam’s prophet, Muhammad said to be the perfect man, and his actions emulated for all time? If so, would Muhammad’s actions in the 7th century further the rights of the LGBT community in the 21st?
8. Did Muhammad keep slaves? Did he take part in war? Did he rape women? How old was was his child bride Aisha, when he consummated the marriage?
I would like to hear Janet Morgan Riggs opinion on Robert Spencer after she has investigated these points.

Janet Riggs is a profoundly shameful person posing as someone virtuous. And her type is most everywhere nowadays on college campuses in America where the utterly bogus distinction is made between free speech and hate speech, thus killing true free speech.
And imagine the very little she knows about Islam compared to what Robert Spencer knows. Reflecting upon this can only lead to the conclusion that this woman is not just shameful but extraordinarily ignorant.
Also, were Bertrand Russell, Winston Churchill, Oriana Fallaci, Ernest Renan, Arthur Schopenhauer, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson or David Hume still alive, I suppose she would treat them the same way she is treating Robert Spencer because these people also spoke the truth about Islam, which is as much a menace to freedom as are Nazism and Marxism. Not one Muslim-majority nation today is a truly free country. Not one. Does Janet Riggs even know this? Ah, this woman feels me with disgust.

i don’t understand one of this woman’s points in her letter:
“…This issue is difficult because it pits two core institutional values against one another:
• the free and open exchange of ideas and the exploration of their ethical and
spiritual dimensions; and
• the commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning environment. …”
inviting robert spencer fulfills both…so how are they pitted against each other?
mortimer says
Robert Spencer does not confirm the CULTURAL MARXIST ‘narrative’ (i.e. party doctrine). That is ‘heresy’ and the rulers of the college are the Grand Inquisitors hunting down non-Marxist heresy and preventing its spread.
They do NOT want the EXCHANGE of NON-MARXIST IDEAS. They are BLOCKING non-Marxist ideas in every way they can.
They want a MONO-CULTURE of CULTURAL MARXISM at the college, rather than IDEOLOGICAL diversity.
mousey says
thanks for the reply mortimer. Certainly they don’t want him to speak, but what did she mean when she said letting him speak was pitting those 2 values against each other? “free and open exchange of ideas” and “inclusive learning environment.” I don’t know, i guess i just don’t speak her language and i’m not sad about that.
gburgstudent says
She was referring to the Muslim and Middle Eastern students who felt threatened by Spencer’s presence on campus and therefore felt that their identity was being called into question and presented as violent. We allow a variety of speakers. The initial problem with allowing Spencer was simply logistical and security based. As a school of only 2500, we don’t have the infrastructure to handle large events or violent opposition. Thankfully, as we are not UC Berkeley and therefore capable of acknowledging controversial view points this proved not to be an issue. Young Americans for Freedom, the conservative group that invited him, has enjoyed full support from the College despite the many controversies they have created over the past several years. Speaking as a conservative student at the College, I would not in any way say that Gettysburg is party driven, liberally minded, or aiming to silence conservative opposition.

Hateful, bigoted, fear-mongering that should be shunned from public discourse (while the global jihad is free to spread unopposed).

Largely uninformed comments about JMR clearly not obtained from the college or its students. Not to mention that attacking her physical appearance or her personal life is wildly inappropriate and immature.

Al Lah was indeed the name for the chief pagan moon god in ancient Arabia, and there is no doubt that Muslims revere the black rock of Mecca. Is muhammed denying that all Muslims face this rock when they pray, and circle it during the Hajj? Determining the Qibla or direction to Mecca is, in fact, an obsession for Muslims.
But, really, most Infidels could not care less about such aspects of Islam.
What we are concerned about is the threat of violence and oppression from that supremacist creed.
Can ibrahim itace muhammed deny that Islam seeks the submission of all people to its savage tenets? Of course he can’t. And that is why he wants to silence Robert Spencer.

Love your reply, gravenimage, to the rube, ibrahim.
I would add here that having taught a Civil War Era Course at the college level, I took many students over more than two decades I taught this course to Gettysburg (and to Antietam too in Maryland, which is only some 65 miles away from Gettysburg). I know the town and battlefield well (including the Lincoln Diner in downtown Gettysburg where I had, on many occasions, scrapple——–and with that acquired taste you mentioned, to wit, thinly fried scrapple with maple syrup poured over it) .
I calculate I’ve been to Gettysburg at least 15 times (more like 20), and thus it pains me all the more that such a foolish woman as Riggs is head of the college that exists there (with beautiful grounds this college has I might add), amidst where men died and were severely wounded in huge numbers (as much in three days in that terrible heat of the first three days of July,1863 as in the nine years of the Vietnam War) to preserve what Islam KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT.
Riggs is a cruel jest in a location that she deserves not at all to be in. I am extra disgusted by the fact that such a lowly and stupid person would preside over a college where one of the greatest and most monumental events in all of American history transpired. And to think this limited woman is inveighing against one of the greatest persons in our time for the preservation of freedom, one Robert Spencer, only confirms to me again that we indeed live in the Age of Nonsense.
Sorry to go on as long as I have, but being the life-long Pennsylvanian that you already know that I am, to have the sacred town of Gettysburg corrupted ( I mean I’m talking sacred ground here in the cause of freedom, the equal of what even ancient Athens aspired to) by such a mediocrity as Janis Riggs makes me not literally nauseous but certainly metaphorically so.
P.S. If you have never been to Gettysburg and Antietam, once in your life you should do so. The two are as great a ground as exists anywhere in America. Should I ever have the opportunity to serve as your guide to said grounds, I would deem it a very high honor.
Gen Jones says
Thank you Graven and thank you Wellington. Your intelligence and experience as well as your patience is always appreciated.
Wellington says
Well, ibrahim, I guess you can overlook the over 30,000 documented Islamic terrorist attacks that have occurred worldwide just since 9/11 (a minor statistic to be sure considering that Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, et al. have committed so many more documented terrorists attacks in the name of their respective religion since that very dark day, September 11, 2001). Also, the fact that some 60% of the Koran is replete with hatred for non-Muslims, examples being Suras 98:6 and 60: 4, must be looked upon as of no account. Doing otherwise would be, most certainly, “Islamophobic.”
Then there is the matter of the founder of Islam. Unlike other religious and ethical founders such as Jesus, Buddha, Zoroaster, Lao-Tzu, Confucius——ah, it’s a long list——-Mohammed had thousands killed upon his orders, including, let’s see here, some 600 men from the Banya Qurayza tribe beheaded in just one day. And let’s not forget Kinana, whom Mohammed had burned alive, Asma bint Marwan too, killed while nursing her baby, and Abu Afak the poet for daring to criticize the Model Man. Ah, again, it’s a long list. But surely what a great and noble and wonderful man Mohammed was. Only an Islamophobe would doubt it, no?
And how about Islam’s love of freedom? Care to comment upon what, per every major school of Islamic theology to this very day, has to say about a Muslim who converts to another faith? Ah, why not? You could site Sura 4:89 for “comfort” here or the Bukhari Hadith, 9.84.57, where the Model Man himself says, “He who changes his Islamic faith, kill him.” Just makes me all warm inside reading this kissy/face, huggy/bear stuff about Mo. Once again, only an Islamophobe would conclude otherwise, no?
And while we’re at it, let’s not forget that wonderful love affair (actually romantic love in Islam is completely absent which is beyond pathetic but I digress) between the psychopathic founder of Islam, then in his fifties, screwing the nine-year old, Aisha. Convenient too that Mohammed never got a single sexual desire denied him by Allah. Yeah, not one. including for his own daughter-in-law, Zaynab. Yes, amazingly convenient! And bet the fool, Riggs, knows nothing of this, or, if she does, would stupidly bring up violence in the Old Testament not knowing at all that so much in the OT is only descriptive while ALL in the Koran is prescriptive. Yes indeed, counting on the current President of Gettysburg College to get most everything ass backwards about Islam is a sure bet.
And you dare to decry Robert Spencer who has had the courage, knowledge and wisdom to point out all the many troubling freedom-crushing factors that exist in Islam to this day. Well then, apply for a faculty position at Gettysburg College, bitterly ironically set in the same town where America fought for, per Abraham Lincoln’s words, the “last best hope of mankind.” I’m sure your application would be received well, at least better than Robert Spencer’s invitation to speak there, by an overeducated fool like Janet Riggs (truly, this is a disgusting and highly silly woman), which only illustrates in microcosm how those leading the West in the academic, media and political spheres today are indeed exceedingly and destructively foolish.
Hey, have a good day, ibrahim, you lout. Stick your soul where the sun never shines or, in the alternative, placing yourself where the deceased Mohammed is presently residing per Dante’s “positioning.” Yeah, think “Eighth Circle” here. Do so.

Sir, your comment is well-armed with knowledge and logic, being quite understandable for any civilized Homo sapience of our days. But Ibrahim’s level of knowledge belongs to the seventh century desert, when the only winning logic was that of knife, stone or some other cave-dwellers’ weapon. They simply can’t understand the very idea of someone being against their cave without a heavy stone in hand, so even the sharpest logic misses them entirely.

Ibrahim…. you speak like a dunce, and a robot. Oh, and the evil jews comment was my favorite. You are a
slouch when it comes to thinking, but your hating is indeed right up there with the other jew haters of Islam. Endemic, final, unbearably fixed, and tenaciously stupid.

“I have also heard from many who believe that allowing Robert Spencer to speak is the right thing to do, despite the fact that they find his views to be offensive and/or abhorrent.”
This woman hasn’t a clue about Robert Spencer. It is clear she has never taken the time to read any of his articles. If she did, she would discover that Robert doesn’t promote his “views” on the subject of Islam. Robert is an academic who strives to accurately present that facts derived from the fruits of his research. These facts speak for themselves and show that it is Islam is offensive and/or abhorrent. This woman sets a very bad example for her students by prejudging a fellow academic without even bothered to read any of his works.
“Janet Morgan Riggs graduated from Gettysburg College with a B.A. in psychology and mathematics and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton University. Janet returned to Gettysburg College in 1981 as a faculty member in the Psychology Department, where she served as department chairperson. She was appointed the 14th president of Gettysburg College in 2009.”
Clearly this woman is well educated. How can she reach this level just dismissing evidence without investigation or even thought? I guess once you have made it to the top and have gained tenure, you can just throw your thinking cap away and all the academic values that got you there.
Ms. Riggs – let me tell you something about Robert’s “views”. Often I have read articles from him that don’t even have a single word from him personally. There are nothing but several quotes from the most authoritative Islamic sources, in full context, to illuminate the subject of some article. No editorializing whatsoever. No interpretation. Nothing but the facts. There are in fact endless articles of this nature on this website. Try reading a few of them sometime. I guarantee you will find them, if not enlightening, at least thought provoking. (I have a feeling enlightenment won’t come easy to you, so I added the “at least thought provoking” after a moment’s pause while composing this comment.)

Wow.The Christian version of God is not three gods:it is three aspects of ONE God.
To think Christians are polytheists because allah couldn’t figure it out is exceptionally ignorant and shows how you islamic apologists are theologically incompetent and guided by fraudulent teachings of your counterfeit god allah and his mass murdering “prophet”.
As for calling the Holy Ghost satan..thereby speaking evil against God’s Spirit of Truth..
“An so I tell you that people can be forgiven any sin and any evil they say,but whoever says evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven”
Matthew 12 v 31
Your allah won’t save you from such a wicked and evil blasphemy!
Now we know where you come from and where you are going.
Your soul is filled with darkness and such a blind hatred of the Truth,
.
God have mercy on your soul:you are a blasphemer of the Spirit of God.
I feel so sorry for you….follow your allah as you wish but don’t expert any mercy from God.
“Whoever says something evil against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven..now or ever”
Matthew 12 v 32
And calling the Spirit of God ‘satan’ is not only evil but shows you the state of your lost soul.

Ibrahim, your attempt at ‘The Straw Man Argument’ is very poorly expressed. However, you should look up ‘Straw Man Argument’ and learn why your argument is a fallacy.
Ibrahim, Islam cannot be defended because it has no historical basis, it is amoral and opportunistic and it is self-referentially incoherent. The Islamic star and moon symbols in fact represent the divine couple Kabra (Allat) and Qos.

Riggs can.t stand to hear the truth, so she is anti free speech. Our school systems are loaded with left wingers who only want their ideology to be heard by our children. And we the tax payers are paying for this garbage. Schools should be where you learn to think and to make decisions based on facts and on information from many sources not just the far left LIBERAL DEMOCRATS.
student says
As a student of this college I am ashamed of the way our school handles any type of expression that goes against the leftist liberal opinion. After President Trump was elected JMR also sent out a letter encouraging students to visit the counseling center to deal with the trauma of DEMOCRACY. I love Gettysburg College, however, I could not be more disappointed in the way the college treats students that do not align themselves with its leftist opinion. They call for “free expression” yet when your opinion strays from theirs you are called innumerable insults not limited to “xenophobic” “islamophobic” “bigot”
gravenimage says
Thank you, student. Gettysburg College needs more students like yourself standing up for freedom of speech and democracy.

Sayyid Qutb said “The foremost duty of Islam in this world is to depose jahiliyyah from the leadership of man, and to take the leadership into its own hands and enforce the particular way of life which is its permanent feature. We need not rationalize Islam to them, need not appease their desires and distorted concepts. WE WILL BE EXTREMELY OUTSPOKEN WITH THEM. The ignorance in which you are living makes you impure, and God wants to purify you. Thus Shari’ah which God has given to man to organize his life is a universal law. “

Ms Riggs….”This is an extraordinarily complicated and challenging situation”……
Oh no it jolly well isn’t. The situation is very simple and very clear. Dr Spencer, as a well-qualified authority on the subject in question, has every right to express his informed opinions on this matter in public, and it is the duty of all respectable and respected academic institutions to encourage such expression of, and informed debate on, all points of view of any subject. If people don’t like whar Dr. Spencer says, they can therefore say so, with reasons, in an intelligent and civilised debate. That is known as ‘academic integrity’. In Ms. Riggs’ case that commodity seems to be in very short supply. So why is she in her job?
