Was there a question of a Ronald McDonald-led insurrection? Or of Big Mac-driven apostasy from Islam?
“McDonalds sent a very McRoyale tribute to Saudi’s crown prince,” by Leyal Khalife, StepFeed, June 23, 2017:
This week, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman appointed his son and current defense minister – Mohammed bin Salman – as crown prince of the kingdom.
The news was met with excitement from many – with several hashtags trending on Twitter in celebration of MBS’s new position.
Of course, it wasn’t just your ordinary Saudi nationals welcoming MBS via social media.
Burger franchise McDonalds joined in, sending its very own royal tribute to the crown prince.
McDonald KSA pledged allegiance to the crown prince via a tweet that has since been making the rounds online, garnering over 650 retweets at the time of writing.
“We pay homage to his royal highness Mohammed bin Salman. We promise loyalty and obedience on the Quran. We pray God safeguards our kingdom’s security, stability and safety,” the tweet says….

I won’t support McDonalds in Canada ever again. They could have congratulated the Saudi Prince without promising to pay homage to the Koran.
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
Hi Lynne, On first reading I was as dyslexic as you, but then I re-read the wording: “We pay homage to his royal highness Mohammed bin Salman. We promise loyalty and obedience on the Quran. We pray God safeguards our kingdom’s security, stability and safety.”
The homage is paid _to_ MBS _on_ the Quran. Would the homage be stronger if it were sworn on a stack of Qurans? How could one make a stack of Qurans without one Quran being at the bottom? Wouldn’t this be a violation of the rule that the Quran must be higher than any other book (on library shelves, for instance)? We need a fatwa on the practice of Quran-stacking.

Why does it upset you that a Saudi national, the owner of McDonald’s KSA pledges loyalty to his king and his religion?
Dean says
You filled in the blanks of this article. I am not a fan of their food or corporate policy but we cannot expect American international businesses and their foreign investors to be successful while advocating American principles. They are selling a product not ideology. However, it is unfortunate and upsets many libertarian expectations that even here so many of those that profit the most from capitalism cluelessly attack it or are at the front of the line for corporate welfare and government interventions against their competitors.

Interesting photo of the McDonald’s ordering counter. Is that a partition on the left? The genders have to be separated even when ordering a Big mac?

Yes. On the right, are shadow persons.
Manual Paleologos says
Most likely. Men and women have separate bus stops, and separate compartments on the bus. Men and women can’t work in the same office. The place is perverted beyond belief.

I haven’t eaten at McDonalds in years – cleaned my diet up. Maybe that is where the latest “Allahu Akhbar”er should have gone for a Happy Meal instead of blowing himself up:

Please, what choice do the McDonald’s franchisees have? If they said anything different beheading for apostasy or disloyalty to the crown is available. “Where you stand often depends on where you sit.”

Of the comments that I have read so far, your comment IS THE ONLY ONE THAT IS SENSIBLE.
This IS A FRANCHISE. THE FRANCHISE OWNER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONTENTS, NOT THE PARENT COMPANY.
MCDONALD’S HAS RESTAURANTS IN ISRAEL ALSO.
And some of them are KOSHER. (perhaps all, I do not know). (How they handle cheeseburgers- brilliant- real meat and soy based-not milk based- cheese; or real cheese and soy meat-not beef).
Frank Anderson says
Oliver, I get lucky every once in a while. Thank you.

Praying for the “kingdom’s security, stability and safety” is a good idea. The House of Saud is one of the big targets of jihadists thanks to the JIHADIST SCHOOL CURRICULUM that the Saudis devised to teach their children to HATE KAFIRS. Unfortunately, many of the students have concluded that the House of Saud are also KAFIRS.

When a king starts demanding an oath of loyalty from sandwich shops it suggests that there is major disquiet in his kingdom. We could be in for some interesting times.

Here’s a quote from the franchise founder, Ray Kroc, that they can hang on the wall:
“I believe in God, family, and McDonald’s. And in the office, that order is reversed.”
(But my personal favorite is: “If any of my competitors were drowning, I’d stick a hose in their mouth.”)

The statement is by a franchise holder-not the corporation. The franchise holder is in business, for the same reason any other sane business person is in business. TO MAKE MONEY.
And not piss off the government- at any level.
Manual Paleologos says
Exactly. And the franchise holder is a Saudi National. He may have civilized managers under him, but he runs the company. Why is it surprising for a Saudi to pledge allegiance to his country and religion?
When you do business in funny countries, you tread softly. Making a pro forma meaningless statement to congratulate the Shaw of Zvengoulistan on the marriage to his thirteenth seven year old wife, is routine. It is just noise.

McDonald’s KSA is owned by a Saudi. All companies in Saudi Arabia are owned by or have Saudi sponsors who have management authority. If you want to do business in KSA, that’s what you have to put up with. Sharia law is the law in KSA. If you can’t live with that, don’t go there. If you don’t steal, don’t murder people, don’t commit adultery and get caught, and don’t drink and get caught, it’s not much different from anyone else’s law. As an expat in a funny country, you learn to tread lightly, whether that is KSA or Red China. You’re there to make money, not to make political statement of to have a good time.
It’s the same with businesses. I can’t think of a much less political entity than a hamburger joint. They are there to hand out Big Macs and take in Riyals.
There is nothing controversial about a business making a pro-forma staement to honor the new Clown Prince and to obey the law.

” As an Expat ” ? Well excuse me, BUT I don’t feel or believe that I must prostitute what I believe or how I live or what I do because I can make more money somewhere else. I Value living in this Country a whole lot more than earning a bit more in some other country. And it allows me to enjoy the Freedoms that Americans are blessed with. ” As an Expat ” you obviously don’t have the same values that I hold so dear, nor the Freedoms that I enjoy ! Their is another word for ” Expat ” and it has five letters and begins with the letter “W”.
Manual Paleologos says
Nope. I did some contract work in Saudi Arabia, back in the “Good Ol’ Days” before they discovered terrorism. The money was decent, and life there was boring. We did some work for the Saudis, and took Saudi money back to the USA.
We lived about as you do. I’m sure you don’t murder, rape, or steal. We had a brewery in our compound, as did just about every Western compound, so we could drink beer if we were careful about not drinking the brewery dry. (I even knew a bar I could get into in Riyadh.) We didn’t get involved in country politics. We learned how Effed Up a people the Saudis are.
One think that traveling does, is it reinforces how good it is to come home.
I have served my country, and would do so again.
