Jihad attacks inside the Islamic Republic of Iran are rare, and this one does not speak well of Iran’s security and intelligence forces, even in their current state of being flush with Obama cash. The Islamic State has claimed the attack, and has an interest in striking Iran as a Shi’ite nation. Sunni Muslims such as the members of the Islamic State see Shia as Rafidites, or rejectors, that is, people who have rejected the first three caliphs, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, and who are therefore heretics subject to Islam’s death penalty for heresy.
“Attackers bomb Iran parliament and mausoleum, at least 12 dead: Iranian media,” by Bozorgmehr Sharafedin, Reuters, June 7, 2017:
Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked Iran’s parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran on Wednesday morning, killing at least 12 people in a twin assault at the heart of the Islamic Republic, Iranian officials and media said.
Islamic State claimed responsibility and released a video purporting to show gunmen inside the parliament building and one man, who appeared wounded, on the floor.
The rare attacks were the first claimed by the hardline Sunni Muslim militant group inside the Shi’ite Muslim country. Iran is one of the powers leading the fight against Islamic State militants in neighbouring Iraq and, beyond that, Syria.
Attackers dressed as women burst through parliament’s main entrance in central Tehran, deputy interior minister Mohammad Hossein Zolfaghari said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
“One of them was shot dead and another one detonated his suicide vest,” he said.
About five hours after the first reports, Iranian news agencies said four people who had attacked parliament were dead and the incident was over.
At least 12 people were killed by the attackers, the head of Iran’s emergency department, Pir-Hossein Kolivand, was quoted as saying by state broadcaster IRIB.
“I was inside the parliament when shooting happened. Everyone was shocked and scared. I saw two men shooting randomly,” said one journalist at the scene, who asked not to be named.
Soon after the assault on parliament, another bomber detonated a suicide vest near the shrine of the Republic’s revered founder, Ayatollah Khomeini, a few kilometres south of the city, Zolfaghari said, according to Tasnim.
A second attacker was shot dead, he said.
The Intelligence Ministry said security forces had arrested another “terrorist team” planning a third attack, without giving further details….
Islamic State has often urged its fighters to attack Iranian targets and lambasted “heretic” Shi’ite Iran for helping the Syrian and Iraqi governments battle Islamic State, which considers Shi’ites to be infidels. The video released by Islamic State’s news agency Amaq included an audio track of a man saying: “Oh God, thank you. [Gunshots]. Do you think we will leave? No! We will remain, God willing.”

Berengaria – do you really believe the actions of a handful of muslim terrorists reflect the all the muslims on Earth (1.6 Billion – or 23% of Earth’s population in 2014)?
By that logic, you should label Christianity globally as an ‘evil sect’ and call for its eradication, because of Christian terrorists, like Andres Behring Breivik, who killed 69 young people and youth workers in 2011 in the name of Christianity. By your logic, Breivik’s actions represent all Christians (and my mum’s a Christian, and she’s not a terrorist!).
And if all muslims are terrorists, how come I – an open atheist – recently spent several days at a muslim friend’s wedding with around 400 muslim guests, and everyone I met was really friendly, nobody threatened me, and I survived? If 23% of the Earth’s population were all terrorists, we’d have all be destroyed long ago!
Again, I’m not religious at all, but I read the koran, and I found it to be totally contrary to islamic extremism.
Of course, as your views about islam are rather strong, I’m sure you’ve read the koran, so as to know enough about it? Because having a strong stance on a religion without reading their core texts would be very silly! 🙂
Finally, I will say I dislike all religion more broadly, as it’s a tool to control and manipulate people. But I believe in religious freedom to, so I’d never say somebody should not be religious, even if I think religion is one of society’s ills.

You make a good, eloquent, point that has made me reconsider some of my logic… I will read up on it, I assure you. I intentionally came here to a website broadly contrary to my established believes, with the intention of learning (both about different views, and possible shortcomings in my beliefs.).
Mirren10 says
Your post makes no sense, and you are re-arranging facts to suit your agenda.#
”By that logic, you should label Christianity globally as an ‘evil sect’ and call for its eradication, because of Christian terrorists, like Andres Behring Breivik, who killed 69 young people and youth workers in 2011 in the name of Christianity. ”
Breivik did not murder ”in the name of Christianity.” If you’re going to post here, I suggest you concentrate on **facts**, not wishful thinking. Read Breivik’s ‘manifesto.’
Even if Breivik *had* murdered ”in the name of Christianity”, he would have been rejecting the tenets of Christianity, because nowhere in the New Testament, or any other Christian texts, is it suggested, far less mandated, that Christians should murder those who disbelieve.
However, there are ample commands in the koran for muslims to murder the disbelievers. Particularly during Ramadan.
”And if all muslims are terrorists …”
No-one has said *all* muslims are terrorists. However, any muslim who accepts the tenets of islam, has the potential to become one, since the tenets of islam mandate it. The tenets of Christianity do not.
” … how come I – an open atheist – recently spent several days at a muslim friend’s wedding with around 400 muslim guests, and everyone I met was really friendly, nobody threatened me, and I survived? If 23% of the Earth’s population were all terrorists, we’d have all be destroyed long ago!”
Do you really think a personal anecdote belies the tenets of islam ? If you actually want to know what your muslim ‘friend’ really thinks of non-muslims, , ask some pertinent questions regarding the rape of Aisha at the age of nine, mohammed declaring he had been made victorious by terror, the verses in the koran mandating murder of all infidels until ”all the world is for allah” etc.
” … I’m not religious at all, but I read the koran, and I found it to be totally contrary to islamic extremism.”
Perhaps you could then explain to us here, who have also read the koran, and noted the preponderance of violent jihad verses, and contempt and hatred for the unbelievers, which parts you found to be ”contrary to Islamic extremism” ? Perhaps you could also point to those verses quoted by Isis, and all muslim terrorists, and explain their essentially peaceful, nature to us, if not to them ?
But of course you will do none of the above, as I am equally sure you will not reply to my comment, with factual observations, rather than your wishful thinking meanderings.

Fine post, Mirren.

Fair enough. I honestly will consider your points, as I appreciate your response is considered, and not hostile. I’m guessing we won’t end up agreeing overall, but I am open-minded to listening and changing my views, especially when debate is civil and pleasant. I’m sure I’ll remain a lefty wimpy snowflake, but I honestly will read up on some of the holes in my logic you’ve reasonably highlighted. And I accept there are some. And I accept I have the capacity to be entirely wrong. My wife will tell you, I make mistakes by the day!
And I’ll admit perhaps my lefty back was got up by the tone of the post I responded to, rather than just the sentiments. That is my weakness, and I should address that, even though I still believe said tone was a bit much, and not the best way to engender learning.
And I will endeavour to offer a considered reply. Right now though, I’m behind on a work deadline, so must stop being distracted!
brent_st says
Hi again Mirren, and hi gravenimage,
Firstly, I think the one thing we can agree on is that I’ve been a bit of an idiot. My post was reactionary, knee-jerk, ill thought and emotional. For that I apologise.
Second, you’ve really made me think. All Friday and all weekend, in fact. You’ve made me realise some things about the contradictions I turn a blind eye to in me being left-leaning: and about me basing ‘things I believe on facts’, rather than ‘basing facts on things I believe’, so to speak.
Indeed, you had me up in the attic digging out the Qu’ran I read years back, phoning a couple of Muslim friends (again, I’m an atheist myself, who is open minded to changing that view – so maybe close to agnostic) and doing a lot of thinking. A lot!!! I’ve been very distracted by the aforementioned contradictions. More on that below.
So, lets talk about my shortcomings (in my post above – we’ll be here all day if we touch on my personal shortcomings! 🙂 ).
The Qu’ran I read (handed to me by a very cheerful muslim with leaflets and such on a trestle table in central London perhaps five years ago) turns out to be a heavily edited example from 1989, using its assertion that Arabic is a ‘richer language’ to explain differences therein from other version. One could argue, thus, that it glosses over some of the more unpleasant content… or that it is a modernised interpretation for a different time. I admit, I don’t know enough to point to which it is. I’m making excuses in this case… but there you have it; the Qu’ran I read may not be a typical example. Perhaps some ‘recommended reading’ in terms of a couple of other versions – maybe at different ends of the spectrum?
Next, I accept my Anders Breivik argument had more holes in it than a sieve. While he has made a few references to acting as ‘a supporter of a monocultural Christian Europe’, I totally take your point that he was not acting under instruction of any core tenants. He cherry picked what he wanted to justify his behaviour.
Now – my friend’s wedding. I realise that was a horribly granular example, and I’ve been guilty of that before in entirely unrelated debates. So I must address that in general in my life.
But I did as you asked, and called other muslim friends. One spoke in detail. He said he considers himself a muslim culturally, and ‘mostly believes’ in god, but admits he struggles with that often. Of the contents of the Qu’ran, he rejects much of it as (to paraphrase) ‘something written by a load of horrible old men to control the world around them at the time’. Are you a muslim, I asked him. ‘Absolutely. But I’m a rubbish muslim too. I forget loads of the things I’m meant to remember. And I certainly do not recognise every page of the Qu’ran. Loads of it is horrific’. (All me paraphrasing, I should clarify).
That got me thinking about interpretation of religious texts, and how much actually flexibility is reasonable. I guess over in Christianity there’s some very different views of sexuality and so on, and some Christians would vehemently reject other interpretations of religious documents, from creationists to those who see the opening of the bible as a metaphor for evolution. I’d be interested in your thoughts on that Mirrem and gravenimage (and anyone reading!).
And, certainly, you’ve made me realise how I on the left can be so contradictory. I’m going to be very honest now, but I’m not saying I’m right… not at all! I’ve said out loud some very blanket statements in my life about how awful religion is as a means to control, and I’ve likely aimed most of that at Christianity (I was raised a Christian). But then I’ll defend Islam without knowing much about it, even though when I read the version of the Qu’ran I did read, I find it horribly authoritarian, superior, and extremely unkind to all kinds of people. I admit I (presently) don’t like the Christian bible either… but would I defend that? No, I honestly wouldn’t. Totally contradictory of me.
So you’ve got me thinking, do I tend to go with whatever puts me on what I feel is the moral high-ground (from my lefty perspective)/whatever suits me? I whine about the bible as a means of control one moment, and then defend the Qu’ran the next, and then say (and I believe this) how the Christian church played a wonderful role in my childhood community, and then I bash some Muslim countries treatment of women. Like I said, you’ve got me thinking.
I guess there’s nothing deeply wrong with having contradictory feelings. And here’s how I’m left feeling… I still do believe in peoples’ right to religious freedom… and I still do dislike more about religion than I like… and I’m starting to see how complete religious freedom can excuse horrific behaviour… but I do struggle personally to make sweeping statements about a large number of people when the variety of interpretations is so wide… but I admit making those sweeping statements when it suits my existing beliefs.
Equally, I’d love to hear thoughts on what could be done to stop all the horrors religion caused. If religion is about faith and belief, I don’t see how that can be reasonably managed or controlled, because telling people to stop believing is likely a fruitless endeavour. If a generic belief broadly were to be in some way outlawed or pushed from culture, how would that work?
Finally, I will say I still do feel very uneasy about the original post I was replying to here by Berengaria. ‘Whatever Islamic Sect, they belong to, it turns them into rabid Beings of no worth!’ I believe in education, guidance and second chances, and I find it very sad to call such a huge group of people ‘beings without worth’. Do others here agree with that notion, that muslim individuals have no worth as humans? Perhaps not?
Oh – and finally, finally, I hope its clear I do hate terrorism. As it happens, this weekend a good friend of my wife’s visited, and she was amidst everything during the terrorist attach in London Bridge. Her story of police bursting in and shouting ‘get under the tables and turn off your phones’ was very upsetting. Terrorism is horrific, inexcusable, and needs to be stopped.
Yours, a lefty snowflake you have put into deep thought.

This time its jihadists who are Sunni Muslims,of ISIS, murdering Shi ‘ite Muslims of Iran As in this jihad bombing. Other times its Shi ‘ite jihadist Muslims, as Hezbollah ,murdering Sunni Muslims Both the followers of different branches of Islam hate each other. Nevertheless Muslim of those two of Islam both believe that the founder of their religion, Muhammad, was an actually prophet of God. Likewise , they both believe that their “holy book” the Qu ‘ran is the actual word of God .All this lead to the important subject that it’s a good thing to define what Islam really is .Of the many ways Islam may be described, one of them is that a religion of denial. Meaning that Islam denies that Jesus is the Son of God. As in the Son of God Who is God the Father. Furthermore, Islam denies the Jesus is God the Son. In addition, Islam denies that Jesus is God. Before going over these three denials of Islam it first should the stated the Bible instructs the way to tell if a prophet or religious teacher is really from and of God or not is do the teachings and doctrines of that prophet of teacher really fit in accord what is found in the Bible ? For if that prophet or teachers and teachers doctrines that are in contradiction to the Bible then that prophet is a false prophet and that religious teacher is a false teacher and thus in doctrinal error and darkness. Likewise if a religion had teachings and doctrines that are in contradiction that is religion is in error also part of the world of darkness and is therefore a false religion. As the Bible instructs in Isaiah 8:20. “To the law of the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” [K.J.V.] With this clearly stated, three things should be known.
First, that Islam denial that Jesus is the Son of God is in great contradiction to the teaching of the Bible . Which reveals the Jesus is the Son of God? As seen in ,for example Matthew 3:16,17. 16:15,16. Luke 1:35. John 3:16-18, 36. First John 2:22,23. 4:14,15. 5:12,13. Second, that Islam denies that Jesus is God the Son is in strong contradiction to the Bible. As found in Hebrews 1:6-8. With emphasis on verse 8. Third, Islam’s denial that Jesus is God is in great contrast to the doctrine and teaching of the Bible. That Jesus is God may be found in ,for example, John 1:1;3. Colossians 1:15-17. 2:9. Romans 9:5 Second Peter 1:1. Titus 2:13. First John 5:20. Moreover, to further discover that the Bible teachings that Jesus is God all a person has to do is to compare the Old Testament with New Testament to see that Jesus is God. As in comparing Isaiah 45:22,23. with Philippians 2:5-11. Also by comparing Psalm 89:8,9. with Mathew 8:23-27. will reveal that Jesus is God. Likewise, by comparing Psalm 62:5-7 . with First Corinthians 10:4. shows the Deity of Jesus. Even by comparing the News Testament books together will show that Jesus is God. As in comparing Romans 14:12. with John 5:22. will show Jesus to be God. The list can go on but this should be enough, for all who are willing to see the truth, that Jesus is, indeed, the Son of God. That Jesus is God the Son and that Jesus is God.
The imams and mullahs as well as the other apologists for Islam will try to “explain’ this all away by making the claim that the Bible had been corrupted by Christians ,through time, and that’s way the Bible reads as it does. This claim, very much, underestimate the Power of God to protect and preserve His Word ,through time , and to keep in intact and away from the corruption of men. In conclusion, in light and information of the Bible in can be seen that Islam is a awful and terrible doctrinal error concerning it teaching about the Nature of Jesus and therefore Islam is part of the world of darkness. So Islam with its strong contradictions to the Bible is a false religion, Proverbs 14:12. So all Muslims be they peaceful non-ISIS members or the violent jihadist/ISIS members are thus invited to leave the false religion of Islam and come the and receive the Jesus of the Bible who is the only way to heaven ,John 14:6 and the True Light of the world. John 8:12.
In addition, there is the Christian internet site which replies to the claim made by the imams and mullahs as well as the other apologists for Islam. it’s http://www.answering-islam.org

muhammed wouldn’t know a fact if it bit him in the ass. ISIS has slaughtered Infidels and Muslims who it considers “heretical”, like the Shia here.
And the idea that ISIS has not attacked Israel is absurdly false:
“Rocket attack in Israel is declared part of Islamic State’s ‘jihad against Jews'”

The relative freedom from terrorist attacks within Iran has been one of the most compelling arguments that many Iranians have acknowledged encouraging them to stick with the political (theocracy) status quo. This terrorist atrocity is a significant development. Islam was a crude religion fashioned by Arabs and forced upon Persians. An increasing swath of young Iranians would like the ancient monotheistic religion of Persia to be resurrected and to form the backbone of a Persian Cultural Revival.

Yes, better, far better, that there be Magi in Iran and not mullahs.

The clarity of material by people like David Wood, Robert Spencer and Bill Warner can disabuse more and more people of internalized Islamic propaganda…

Believe it or not, Iran WILL reform and be a friend of Israel. God works in a cyclic manner.
“Everything old is new again. HISTORICALLY, Iran and Israel were buddies. Israel shipped
weapons to Iran during the Iran/Iraq war. HISTORICALLY, Iran and Iraq hated each other.
The rift will occur again. Sunni’s and Shia’s hate each other MORE then they hate Jews.
Iran will “turn,” and this will promote peace throughout the region.

“Republic of Iran are rare, and this one does not speak well of Iran’s security and intelligence forces, even in their current state of being flush with Obama cash.”
“Obama cash” sadly is American tax payers tax. Russia/ Syria are nice and cozy with the ROP as well and Putin uses the same usless ROP rhetoric that Obama did. A couple of cunts.
