Even Rex Tillerson fell for it. My latest in PJ Media:
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) gained worldwide headlines — and praise — for its announcement last week that 130 imams in the United Kingdom were refusing to perform funeral prayers for the London jihad mass murderers.
But as is so often the case, there was less to this much-heralded display of Islamic moderation than met the eye.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the following last Monday in New Zealand:
I was actually encouraged when I heard on the news this morning that a number of imams in London have condemned these attackers and said they will not perform prayer services over their funerals, which means they’re condemning their souls. And that is what has to be done, and only the Muslim faith can handle this.
Moderate Muslims stood up at last, right? It certainly seemed so. From the MCB statement:
Imams and religious leaders from across the country and a range of schools of thought have come together to issue a public statement condemning the recent terror attack in London and conveying their pain at the suffering of the victims and their families.
In an unprecedented move, they have not only refused to perform the traditional Islamic prayer for the terrorist — a ritual that is normally performed for every Muslim regardless of their actions — but also have called on others to do the same. They said:
“Consequently, and in light of other such ethical principles which are quintessential to Islam, we will not perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer over the perpetrators and we also urge fellow imams and religious authorities to withdraw such a privilege. This is because such indefensible actions are completely at odds with the lofty teachings of Islam.”
This all sounds great, but there’s just one catch.
Muhammad himself is depicted in hadiths as forbidding funeral prayers formartyrs.
Islamic law forbids such prayers as well.
To be clear:
Withholding funeral prayers is anHONOR reserved for those who die while committing jihad.
In one hadith — hadith are reports about Muhammad’s words and deeds that, when deemed authentic, are normative for Islamic law — the prophet of Islam ordered:
[Two martyrs to] be buried with their blood (on their bodies). Neither was the funeral prayer offered for them, nor were they washed.
One of the martyrs’ sons recalled:
When my father was martyred, I started weeping and uncovering his face. The companions of the Prophet stopped me from doing so but the Prophet did not stop me. Then the Prophet said, “(O Jabir), don’t weep over him, for the angels kept on covering him with their wings till his body was carried away (for burial)” (Bukhari 5.59.406).
Muhammad told Jabir not to weep because his father was not dead, but alive:
But do not think of those that have been slain in Allah’s cause are dead. Nay, they are alive! With their Sustainer have they their sustenance (Qur’an 3:169).
Based on the hadith in which Muhammad orders the bodies of the martyrs not to be washed and funeral prayers not to be said over them, as well as others like it, Islamic law states:
[It is] unlawful to wash the body of a martyr … or perform the funeral prayer over him.
…
[A] martyr (shahid) means someone who died in battle with non-Muslims” (Reliance of the Traveller, g4.20).
What Rex Tillerson — and much of the Western world, and certainly much of Western media — took as a great show of Muslim rejection of terrorism was actually a display of Muslim adherence to Islamic law, Muslim acceptance of terrorist deaths as Islamic martyrdom, and application of Muhammad’s dictum “war is deceit” (Bukhari 4.52.268).
War is deceit, indeed. The Qur’an warns believers not to take unbelievers as “friends or helpers” (َأَوْلِيَا — a word that means more than casual friendship, but something more like an alliance), “except when taking precaution against them in prudence” (3:28). This is a foundation of the Islamic idea that believers may legitimately deceive unbelievers when under pressure. The word used for “guard” in Arabic is tuqātan, from taqiyyatan — hence the now familiar term taqiyya.
The renowned Qur’an commentator Ibn Kathir says that the phrase “except when taking precaution against them in prudence” means:
… believers who in some areas or times fear for their safety from the disbelievers … [may] show friendship to the disbelievers outwardly, but never inwardly. For instance, Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Ad-Darda’ said, ” We smile in the face of some people although our hearts curse them.” Al-Bukhari said that Al-Hasan said, “The Tuqyah [ taqiyya] is allowed until the Day of Resurrection.”…

We westerners have to learn that almost all Muslims lie. It is a habit, part of the culture of Islam. Every waking minute is directed by the Koran. We are infidels who Muslims assume are attacking Islam. They will do and say whatever they think they need to in order to defend their violent culture, including lying ( taqiyya ).

I agree that martyrs in islam can be treated in the way you described, based on hadith. In practice Muslims do perform prayers, based on ‘other’ islamic teachings. They even regularly do more than that for martyrs – they perform funeral prayers (in absence) around the world.
I do not know those imams but do not think they refrained from prayers for the explanation described in the article. Probably they said what they said to give some ammunition to their allies in the media and government. besides, one funeral prayer by any one is enough (actually more than enough in cases of martyrs)
But let us assume the imams were genuine and meant what they said. Let us also assume that a thousand Muslims went to the streets of London to condemn the attacks and Muslims wrote articles and appeared on TV to do the same. would that prove to the West that Muslims and Islam have nothing to do with terrorism? The answer is largely YES, it would. Politicians and journalists would consider such actions as a definite proof and would refer to it for years to come.
That is our weakness when it comes to Islam: a hint of moderation can outweigh decades of evidence to the contrary and 31000 terrorist attacks.

Salim, Thanks for the detailed comment. Very informative.. Very sad that the leftist West is always keen on taming Islam(or hoping as such) when in reality Islam has vehemently and murderously tried to tame the world for 1400 years.
Norger says
Thanks Salim. The subject of hidden meanings seems to come up all the time in Islam. I am reminded of something that a Muslim Brotherhood member reportedly said, to the effect that Muslim leaders would deliver public messages that would be understood one (pro-Sharia) way by the believers, and a different way by non-Muslims. The message here seems ambiguous, perhaps deliberately so. Do you think these Imams were actually intended to send the message to Muslims that these terrorists were to be honored as martyrs?
dumbledoresarmy says
You wrote – “Do you think these Imams were actually intended to send the message to Muslims that these terrorists were to be honored as martyrs?”
Perfectly probable.
salim says
Norger, I am not sure about this particular case. However, it is absolutely true that Muslim Brotherhood (MB) often say two opposing things. They do it regularly.
Example: MB denounced the killing of innocents in a terrorist attack but several of its leaders in Jordan attended the religious service of the suicide bomber, which was criticised by some activists. MB issued a statement that the leaders who attended the service did so on a personal level and did not represent the MB policy.
Such dualism is a very common Islamic practice.
Debi Brand says
Real quick–will aim to address this further, and post accordingly.
As all know, whatever is found in Shariah, only gets there because it is found in Qur’an or Sunnah–sunnah, which, includes all the “Prophet” did, said, rendered, in brief, etc.; therefore, his acts as detailed in hadith, in Sira and in maghazi.)
At the battle of Uhud, sira and magahzi, so too, Imam Ahmad, they provide, that, in brief here for now, “the Messenger of Allah … prayed over the dead.”
Same provide, others state, he did not pray over the dead of Uhud.
However, proceeding that statement, centered around the burial of Hamza–“Lion of God and His messenger [sic]”– as well as on the heels of it, Maghazi provides, incidents in which the said “messenger” clearly, refrained from praying over the dead in the way of “Allah.” (As did some among his companions.)
Thus, in his words, “Wrap them in their blood and in their wounds,” no need to wash them, no need to pray over them, for, once move, in words attributed to the alleged “prophet of Islam, the martyrs were those among those “bathed in blood for the Cause of Allah.”
In brief.

Wow, what a grand gesture of concern, they won’t pray for murderers! That’s about as helpful and meaningful to me as not picking their noses for an hour. These f*cks don’t impress me one bit with that fake concern. I would have been much more impressed if they’d soundly condemned all jihad violence and hate for their political religion. Had it been a bunch of Putin’s commies or korean spies that did the killing we’d be in WWIII right now. But these d*mn muslims can preach their hate and kill us like pigs and our news media and politicians only whimper excuses. Trump may be a klutz but he’s right about muslims, we need a travel ban. We’re seeing the same infiltration tactics in our nation as in Europe. All those nations we love–civilized, intellectual, humanitarian, free–are doomed to a future of islamic violence and oppression. They are robbing us of our free speech, our peace of mind, our lives, our kids and women are mass raped, nasty enclaves are gobbling whole neighborhoods… we can all see the handwriting on the wall. These invaders don’t respect us, we’re sheep for shearing. Welfare is their jizya and our freedoms a gateway to religious tyranny over us all. I don’t see why I should like any of them, even the nice ones. Do they wear a head scarf? go to a mosque? that’s enough for me, in my mind they’re all part of the same big problem. And the problem is islam. It’s destroying the entire western world, and I think it’s a travesty that so many of our own people are helping them do it.

It shouldn’t be that hard to catch the deceptiveness in things like the statements of these imams. It’s not like there are that many places to look for underlying motivations (pretty much the Qur’an or the hadith, right?).
For example, why would a Muslim who rejects every aspect of western culture even want to emigrate to a western country? Even if they were fleeing persecution? Answer: Sharia law forbids it, unless they have no alternative, or — wait for it — their purpose in emigration is jihad and spread of Islam. Knowing this, why would so many Islamic countries in the middle east, and elsewhere, refuse to take in every single Muslim who was seeking safety from persecution? That makes no sense, because that obligation (of the Islamic countries) would take precedence over the availability of financial or logistical support for the immigrants.
Take a look at the first few search results of a Google search for:
https://www.google.com/search?q=does+islam+allow+muslims+to+live+in+non-islamic+country
There is only one reason why a Muslim who rejects every aspect of western culture — in other words, a fundamentalist(1) — would want to live in a western country: jihad. Otherwise, they would believe it would doom them to hell.
1 I used the term “fundamentalist” to describe what many call “extremists”. But since the extremists derisively call Muslims who don’t believe exactly as they do “innovators”, I think that “fundamentalists” is a more accurate and revealing term than “extremist”, which implies that it’s a very unusual, or far-out belief. It is, apparently, all too common.

Uh, Clemente, all of Islam is extremist and deviant, founded by someone who shows many of the characteristics of a psychopath. Mohammed was a clever fraud enthralled with death and lust and treasure and he spawned the worst religion of all time, a religion which is a mortal enemy of liberty and whose holy book is a hate manual. Wake up. As long as you remain a Muslim you will remain spiritually dead, something not quite fully human, rather like Nazis were. And yes, I am most definitely comparing Islam to Nazism. Both are totalitarian ideologies that despise freedom and which, far from it, do not adopt a true Golden Rule for all.
Yes indeed, wake up and leave Islam but, of course, if you do be careful because every major school of Islamic theology to this day, Sunni and Shiite, requires death for someone who exits Mo’s warped creed. Mohammed himself said, “He who leaves his Islamic faith kill him.” {Bukhari Hadith 9.84.57} And right in the Koran, Sura 4:89, it states that “those who leave the way of Allah, seize them and kill them.” Wonderful religion you got there. Oh yes, wake the hell up. BTW, there is no Allah. Allah was just Mohammed’s hand puppet. Also, there isn’t one damn good thing in Islam that can’t be found elsewhere and yet there is much wrong in Islam that is difficult to find anywhere else. Done here.
Clemente says
Thanks for your reply and “concern” I guess, could you take a moment and look through the materials I posted before, I am well aware of screwed up things are in with Muslims however I wish to stand against the tide of tumult and adhere to Islam which is rooted in a correct understanding of the teachings, you compare Islam to Nazism which I find unfair but I can see your point if you want I can discuss as to why point by point at a later time since this will require some research and comparing but in the mean time there is a hero of mine named Abdul-Qader Al-Jaziri a man who stood up for Christians during French Occupation of Syria who was officially recognized by President Lincoln, also I dont mean to call the kettle black but Christians have done atrocious things that many in the West turn a blind eye to, (I am not absolving muslims of their actions) and I sincerely believe as far as my knowledge of Islam has brought me that God will deal with these murders, and at the same time I strongly believe nations need to put forth a concerted effort to stopping the terror which I know is far different than what the Quran teaches, its quite easy to cherry-pick the religion muslim or not and have it fit an agenda my friend. Thank you for your time.
Wellington says
When Christians did atrocious things in the name of their religion, they were violating the tents of their faith, contra Muslims so many times since the Koran is full of instructions to cut of heads (e.g., Sura 47:4), fingertips, amputate limbs, etc. Nothing like this can be found in the New Testament.
As for any violence in the Old Testament, it was for one place and time only, demonstrating that the Bible is often only descriptive while the Koran is always prescriptive. Remember too that Jesus never had anyone harmed or killed (ditto for other religious and ethical founders like Buddha and Confucius) while Mohammed had thousands killed or tortured upon his orders (e.g., some 600 men from the Banu Qurayza tribe beheaded in just one day). Not surprising since Mohammed himself said, “I have been made victorious with terror.” {Bukhari Hadith 4.52.220}
You know, every religion threatens something in the next world if one does not believe or do this or that——-you’re going to Hell, you’re going to come back as a cow or a carrot, etc. Many religions even threaten that the deity or deities they propound exist will do harm to you in this world too should you be slack in some way. But only Islam also instructs its believes to do harm in this world to non-believers and this is where Islam really sucks and thus is a menace to all mankind. I don’t give a damn what Muslims believe in, rot though I think it is, IF it weren’t accompanied by instruction to do harm to people in this world who criticize or oppose Islam in some manner. This is the heart of the evil in Islam. Some 31,0000 documented Islamic terrorist attacks worldwide just since 9/11 serves as partial testimony to this malignancy.
BTW, about 60% of the Koran is wrapped up with hating non-Muslims, examples being Suras 60:4 and 98:6. 164 verses exist in the Koran calling upon Muslims to wage war against non-Muslims “until all religion is with Allah.” {Sura 8:39} By contrast, 0 verses exist in the New Testament calling upon Christians to wage war to spread their faith. And if you think Islam is not a mortal threat to freedom, then you live in a make-believe world.
Also disgusting is that Muslims are permitted to come to non-Muslim countries and practice their faith openly, build their houses of worship, attempt to make converts, etc. while non-Muslims trying to do such things in Muslim lands would be in peril of their lives. So, Islam is guilty of a HUGE double standard and reeks of hypocrisy. It’s sickening all that is wrong in Islam. And as I already stated in a previous post there is NOTHING good that can be found in Islam which can’t be found elsewhere, not one damn thing, but there is much rot in Islam that is difficult to find anywhere else. Islam is a burden to all the world and the world would be infinitely better off if every Muslim woke up tomorrow a Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, or for that matter an agnostic or atheist. I suspect you will get none of this but then if you are a Muslim you are guaranteed to miss a great deal.
