John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts, and served as President of the United States from March 4, 1825 to March 4, 1829. Of the 44 men who have held that office, he demonstrated the greatest knowledge of Islam. His impressions of that religion, however, were not favorable; today, he would be excoriated as a racist, bigoted “Islamophobe,” and were he President, there would be an insistent chorus of rage demanding his impeachment, resignation, and/or head on a platter. Consider the vicious and relentless hatred that is directed against President Trump for merely daring to try to impede the flow of jihadis into the United States by restricting immigration from six countries for 90 days. Adams, for saying the statements below, would be flayed mercilessly in a manner that would make the treatment of Trump look gentle.
But can anyone prove that anything he says below about Islam is false?
Hugh Fitzgerald will be along in a few days with a proper tribute to this far-seeing and honest man, but in the meantime, you can read his words about Islam and consider how much the public discourse has changed, not for the better, since the days of John Quincy Adams.
In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar, the Egyptian, combining the powers of transcendent genius, with the preternatural energy of a fanatic, and the fraudulent spirit of an impostor, proclaimed himself as a messenger from Heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth. Adopting from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God; he connected indissolubly with it, the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust, by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE.
Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. That war is yet flagrant; nor can it cease but by the extinction of that imposture, which has been permitted by Providence to prolong the degeneracy of man. While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men. The hand of Ishmael will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. It is, indeed, amongst the mysterious dealings of God, that this delusion should have been suffered for so many ages, and during so many generations of human kind, to prevail over the doctrines of the meek and peaceful and benevolent Jesus.
The precept of the koran is, perpetual war against all who deny, that Mahomet is the prophet of God. The vanquished may purchase their lives, by the payment of tribute; the victorious may be appeased by a false and delusive promise of peace; and the faithful follower of the prophet, may submit to the imperious necessities of defeat: but the command to propagate the Moslem creed by the sword is always obligatory, when it can be made effective. The commands of the prophet may be performed alike, by fraud, or by force.
The fundamental doctrine of the Christian religion, is the extirpation of hatred from the human heart. It forbids the exercise of it, even towards enemies. There is no denomination of Christians, which denies or misunderstands this doctrine. All understand it alike—all acknowledge its obligations; and however imperfectly, in the purposes of Divine Providence, its efficacy has been shown in the practice of Christians, it has not been wholly inoperative upon them. Its effect has been upon the manners of nations. It has mitigated the horrors of war—it has softened the features of slavery—it has humanized the intercourse of social life. The unqualified acknowledgement of a duty does not, indeed, suffice to insure its performance. Hatred is yet a passion, but too powerful upon the hearts of Christians. Yet they cannot indulge it, except by the sacrifice of their principles, and the conscious violation of their duties. No state paper from a Christian hand, could, without trampling the precepts of its Lord and Master, have commenced by an open proclamation of hatred to any portion of the human race. The Ottoman lays it down as the foundation of his discourse.

The survival and, even, expansion of the destructive, oppressive, unjust ideology of Islam seems inexplicable, unless we acknowledge:
“Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

I find it to be a joke when many people today, talk about how the world is richer than ever in knowledge and its flow is unparalleled in any previous era, thanks in a great part to the internet.
Here, we have someone who lived two hundred years ago when not only there was no internet but there wasn’t any of modern day communication and transportation tools, yet he fully understood this catastrophe that has been plaguing the world for over 1400 years now.
For those who argue that the world is progressing for the better, John Quincy Adams insights about Islam is a good rebuke to them and a proof that the world is regressing in at least one major way that will affect generations to come, for the worse!
Doc says
Yes, we have successfully dumbed down oir populous to the point that they believe the leftist crap spouted by the msm. Without those distractions Pres Adams studied the Qj’ran and muslim history for himself. People in our day and age would reach the same conclusion if they used their own brains.

No doubt that if JQA was alive today espousing his (historically recorded) sentiments, he’d be labelled as a hater, bigot and Islamophobe…..Islam has a ‘rich’ history of desecrating graves of it’s chief enemies, most notably Christians…I have no doubt that if Islam were to take over the world, including the U.S., JQA’s (may he rest in peace) remains would be susceptible to Islamic desecration…nothing is sacred to Islam, except mo.
mortimer says
Barry, if John Quincy Adams were alive today, his intellectual might would be making a big difference in the discussion of Islam.
John Quincy Adams would not be defeated in any discussion or debate about Islam.
Barry says
Mortimer, I wholly agree with that. He got a lot of that intellect (of course from mom and dad). I (sadly) first came to know of Adams/ Jefferson and many other founding fathers’ writings of what they called, ‘Mohammedans’ through writings of William Federer. He’s also a great source on early American history and Islam. Mortimer, all of those first patriots’ intellects and breathe of knowledge would utterly shame liberal ‘academicians’ of today. ….I’d love to see what they’d do to Karen Armstrong’s version of the crusades. ….

Yep. Not a wasted word.
He’d done his homework. You can see that, if you read the whole of the essays in which the passages that Mr Spencer has cited, occur.
Because, for example, at one point Mr Adams refers to the Fatiha, in terms that make it quite clear that he is aware of the hateful implications of that ‘prayer’: that it is ‘between the lines’ a condemnation of and incitement against Jews and of Christians. He is *clearly* aware of the standard tafsir of that text.

A true PATRIOT, JQA.
mortimer says
John Quincy Adams brilliantly deduced the ESSENTIAL DOCTRINE of Islam: violence and lust. There isn’t much else to Islam that concerns outsiders.
Adams must have become aware of the rape culture of Islam from personal conversations with women and men liberated from Islamic captivity.
The rape culture of Muslims witnessed in Sweden and Germany is a normative part of jihad, rather than an aberration. Koran 4.24 authorizes the rape of non-Muslim captives.
Enoch was right says
I liked his portrayal in the film Amistad. He obviously was a very principled man, a true student of the European Enlightenment and the principle of egalitarianism, as were most of the founding fathers. This is a principle that has been essentially abandoned by the SJWs Leftist feminists who naively endorse Islam as a religion of peace. Neither Leftists or Muslims (at least those who are true to its teachings) believe in egalitarianism. They believe in totalitarianism, and of course the Islamists will win in the end, simply because they are far more violent than the SJWs who aid them for the time being. As we see daily they both believe in violence and the acquisition of power by any means necessary, which is perhaps why they are allies. The cultural Marxists (including BLM) are not about ending racial hatred and segregation; they are for inciting it and for segregation. They are black supremacists. “Diversity” and “multiculturalism” are Trojan horse concepts for disguising the overthrow of Western civilization, including the principle of egalitarianism. Adams, thus, could be both against slavery and Islamic violence, because both are based on inequality.
Guy Forester says
The so-called feminists, LGBT etc. crowd, SJW’s and “progressives” are a good example of what money can buy. I highly suspect that if one vetted the large donors to these groups that hail Islam as a Religion of Peace (RIP is appropriate), the money trail would end up at certain OPEC doorsteps.
Apparently, money can buy ignorance, suicidal ideation, self-loathing, and denial of reality. Look what happened to most of the people that welcomed the Nazi’s as liberators in WWII. Same ending here. The difference is the above mentioned groups currently have the freedoms, rights, and equality they claim they are denied.
Give them a trip to any muslim dominated country and see how well it goes.

Many of these tools are “politically correct”, and believe that Muslims must be victims of the West. They are, in most cases, not being bribed to say this–they actually believe this tripe. I have a lot of otherwise decent neighbors who think this way.
Lorn Ferguson says
Adams and Thomas Jefferson hated each other…..But its fascinating that they BOTH HATED ISLAM and the Mahomet!! They were smart enough to understand what it was about! BAN iSLAM!!!!!!!! IT IS A CULT n it should NOT be allowed in America! The book threatens ALL non muslims and should NOT be allowed!!!! We have a CONSTITUTION!!!! islam goes against it!!!!
Wellington says
I think, Lorn, you have confused John Adams with his son, John Quincy Adams. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were indeed political enemies, but in their old age, after their Presidencies (1797-1801 for Adams; 1801-1809 for Jefferson), they became good friends and corresponded regularly (and amazingly both died on the very day of the 50th anniversary of the adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence, i.e., July 4th, 1826). There is no evidence, that I know of, respecting any personal animosity at any time between Jefferson and Quincy Adams.
Just for the record and all that. And may I end here by asserting that all three of these men were sterling characters, the like of which is seldom if ever seen anywhere in the world today. Again, just for the record and all that.
gravenimage says
Lorn, as Wellington notes, John Quincy Adams’s father John and Thomas Jefferson were bitter rivals at times, but returned to their close friendship later in life.
I think their actual differences were fairly small–but they wound up in competition for much of their later political lives. If you read their correspondence, they always maintained at least a grudging respect for each other even at the worst of times.
It is notable that Abigail Adams–John’s wife and John Quincy’s mother–always remained on friendly terms with Jefferson, and predicted, quite accurately, that they would be friends again.
Wellington says
I didn’t know about that prediction by Abigail, gravenimage. So thanks for that. Learn something every day, eh?
Shrewd woman she was. Like Martha Washington and several other women of that remarkable age (e.g., Dolly Madison), not only in American history but in all of history. What a generation of both men and women. Hardly any like it ever.

The founding fathers understood very well the continent they left behind and its inherent problems and were students of history and civilizations. America was the next best step in a dark world and they created the worlds most highly evolved political document all while being persecuted for it. It’s about what America is not. All peoples of the world know America is still the promise land minus Islamic doctrines that should not be allowed anywhere near our shores if our so called leaders actually followed our constitution.
J McGill says
it is odd that after ages of knowing that islam is nothing but purest evil and a hideous murder cult, there are still people in civilized countries so damned stupid they aid and support the monstrous cult and protect and glorify its purveyors in the this of year 2017! They should ask of muslims: “here, let me hold your coat while you prepare to slit my throat”

In part, it is because the West was so successful in beating back Islam for the past two hundred years–we “forgot” the threat of Islam.

dumbledoresarmy says
You will know the tide has turned when you get a President who quotes JQA, on Islam, either in his inaugural speech or in a speech at some great city pivotal to human civilisation.
dumbledoresarmy says
To elaborate upon the above comment:
Let us imagine an American President quoting, extensively, JQA on the subject of Islam, and jihad, and the necessity of resolute and, as applicable, ARMED, resistance against the Jihad, in his inaugural speech at Washington, DC, and *then* that same President making a similar speech, similarly quoting JQA, in London… and in Vienna (while making reference to 1683 and the Rescue of Vienna from the Ottoman Muslims, by Jan Sobieski), and in Moscow, and in Rome, and in Athens (quoting JQA’s passionate advocacy of the Greek Christian struggle to be free of the Muslim yoke), and in Jerusalem (at a newly-moved US embassy, no longer in Tel Aviv but in Jerusalem proper)… and in New Delhi (in the process of radically realigning the USA *away* from hideous Islamic Pakistan and *toward* Mother India) and in… Addis Ababa, while publicly calling to mind and honouring the centuries-long historic struggle of Christian Abyssinia to survive as a beleaguered non-Muslim island of light amidst a dark and bloody sea of Islam.
It’s time JQA’s words, from 1829, calm and lucid and relentless in their truthfulness, were brought into the present day and allowed to re-echo around the entire Infidel world.
I have another thought, too: those *brilliant* JQA Essays (on the Greek war of Independence, and on the Russo-Turkish war) though now (thank God!) digitised and readable online – Mr Spencer has provided the link , and I urge everyone to read the whole, there are lots more gems in there – need to be republished *on paper*, as a stand-alone.
I would say, in beautifully-presented pamphlet form, with a suitable introduction and/or commentary (by someone like Mr Fitzgerald; and if not Mr Fitzgerald, i am sure Mr Fitzgerald would know who *should* provide the commentary).
And not just in English. I propose a *diglot* edition – in *Russian* and English, the two languages ‘en face’ (English, with the Russian translation on the facing page). This republication of the JQA essays would be dedicated in memory of … the children of Beslan, and the dead of NYC and Washington, 2001; and of all Russian and American soldiers, past and present, who have fallen in battle against the Jihad. Launched simultaneously in Moscow, in Washington, in NYC (at Ground Zero) and in Beslan.

dumbledoresarmy says
When Mr Fitzgerald’s tribute to John Quincy Adams appears – every single one of us jihadwatchers must share it far and wide on every social platform to which we have access.
What John Quincy Adams said about Islam *has* to become common knowledge.

The link at which you can read in full the digitised version of these JQA essays is this:

http://www.archive.org/stream/p1americanannual29blunuoft.
At page 274 there is *this* additional gem (and I doubt that a man like JQA would have said it lightly; I think it is probably the fruit of long thought):
“AS THE ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLE of his [Mohammed’s] faith is the subjugation of others by the sword; it is only by force, that his false doctrines can be dispelled, and his power annihilated.”
The formal description of these essay is – “Unsigned essays dealing with the Russo-Turkish War, and on Greece, written while JQA was in retirement, before his election to Congress in 1830”.
Here’s what he says about the non-Muslim minorities of the Ottoman Empire.
“Those provinces are the abode of ten millions of human beings, two thirds of whom are Christians, groaning under the intolerable oppression of less than three millions of Turks.
“Those provinces are in some of the fairest regions of the earth.
“They were Christian countries, subdued during the conquering period of the Mahometan imposture, by the ruthless scymetar of the Ottoman race; and under their iron yoke, have been gradually dwindling in population, and sinking into barbarism. The time of their redemption is at hand.” [p. 303]
On the Greek war of independence:
“If ever insurrection was holy in the eyes of God, such was that of the Greeks against their Mahometan oppressors..”. (p 278).
I would urge people to go to the link and read the whole. Then: download, and print it off. Have your own copies.
Perhaps some members of the counter-jihad might like to conduct public readings of those essays, or at least of the most salient portions thereof… **on September 11**.

Vann Boseman says
I am a huge fan of Jefferson and would love to be able to claim that Spencer is wrong and that Jefferson was the president who demonstrated the greatest understanding of Islam. There is no arguing that JCA was the most eloquent president the US has ever had in expressing a full and powerful understanding of Islam. Practically, Jefferson did have misguided belief that Islam was protected under the First Amendment, but also practically felt outrage at the actions of Barbary pirates that he rightly associated with Islam. Jefferson undertook a private personal study of 4 religions in order to formulate his own beliefs. He wished this study to be destroyed when he died, but his study was found and published. At the end of the day those who claim Jefferson was not a Christians were wrong even if it should be said that Jefferson was a very different sort of Christian.
Because much of the writings that Jefferson studied were in Arabic, it is likely that Jefferson could read Arabic to me. At the very least he dabbled in learning Arabic. But I think that because Jefferson studied Islam on more than one level, he probably could read it well. Jefferson clearly understood that some languages could express some things better, or exclusive of, other languages. I have tried to read Jefferson’s autobiography but had to stop because Jefferson would think nothing of going off in French or Latin if he felt a point could be made better in those languages. Because Jefferson did this, I believe he understood the importance of learning Arabic.
Even if Jefferson had a tremendous knowledge of Islam, that does not necessarily mean he had a tremendous understanding of it. John Quincy Adams did have that understanding and expressed it very well.
In the early 80s, I was grouped in a course with Malaysian Muslims in a course at my university. They described themselves as devout and proudly said that they read the Koran instead of merely chanting the words. They felt that the US was obviously evil because how else could it be so rich. But also, they brought up Jefferson who they accused of not necessarily portraying Islam in a positive light. For them, this was evidence of the evil of the United States by one of its most important founders. Much more recently I learned from my wife who spent 13 years in Greek Cyprus that history in many parts of the world is like a wound that has only recently been made. While all the wars in the Middle East may be studied, there are people who live there that carry personal blood feuds over land based on which ancestor planted olive trees. While I may wish for everyone in the US to have a better understanding of history, I know that other cultures in the world look to history much more than here, even if their understanding of it may be extremely biased.
