Note that the National Catholic Reporter’s Ra’fat Al-Dajani uncritically repeats the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations’ claims about “anti-Muslim hate crimes,” without mentioning how often these “hate crimes” turn out to have been perpetrated by Muslims themselves (scroll down at that link to find many examples).
Ra’fat Al-Dajani also leaves out a few passages of the Qur’an which hapless National Catholic Reporter readers might find illuminating as they search for common ground with Islam. These include:
Jesus is not the Son of God and belief in the Trinity is “excess”: “O People of the Book! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter anything concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and his word which he conveyed to Mary, and a spirit from him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say ‘Three.’ Cease! It is better for you! Allah is only One Allah. It is far removed from his transcendent majesty that he should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.” — Qur’an 4:171
And: “It is not befitting to Allah that he should beget a son. Glory be to him! When He determines a matter, he only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.” — Qur’an 19:35
Jesus was not crucified: “And because of their saying: We killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger – they did not kill him or crucify him, but it appeared so to them; and those who disagree concerning it are in doubt about it; they have no knowledge of it except pursuit of a conjecture; they did not kill him for certain.” — Qur’an 4:157
Those who believe in the divinity of Christ are unbelievers: “They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary.” — Qur’an 5:17 (cf. 5:72)
Christians have forgotten part of the divine revelations they received: “From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the other, to the day of judgment. And soon will Allah show them what it is they have done.” — Qur’an 5:14
Those who believe that Jesus is God’s Son are accursed: “The Jews call Ezra a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah’s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! ” — Qur’an 9:30
Christians who do not accepted Muhammad and the Qur’an are the most vile of created beings: “Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence. And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion. Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the most vile of created beings.” — Qur’an 98:6
Muslims must fight against and subjugate Christians: “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden what has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” — Qur’an 9:29
Also, a hadith has Muhammad predicting that Jesus will return at the end of the world and break the cross, as it is an insult to Allah’s power to say that he would have allowed one of his prophets to be crucified:
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, son of Mary [Jesus] will shortly descend amongst you people [Muslims] as a just ruler and will break the Cross and kill the pig and abolish the Jizya [a tax taken from the non-Muslims, who are in the protection, of the Muslim government]. Then there will be abundance of money and nobody will accept charitable gifts. (Bukhari 3.34.425)
Muslims have sometimes taken this to mean not just that crosses will be destroyed in the end time,s but that they should be now. In Spain in 2015, Muslims broke into a church, spray-painted “Allah” on wall, and destroyed the crucifix. In Pakistan in 2014, Muslims destroyed a church that was under construction, and desecrated the cross. When the Islamic State occupied Mosul, it made destruction of all crosses in the city a top priority.
And here’s my favorite New Testament verse, this time referring to the National Catholic Reporter and Ra’fat Al-Dajani: “Leave them; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14)
“The Muslim Jesus provides common ground for Christianity, Islam,” by Ra’fat Al-Dajani, National Catholic Reporter, August 25, 2017:
As the country sits transfixed with one of the strangest, divisive and most unpredictable presidencies in the history of the United States, lost in the madness has been the increase in Islamophobia since Donald Trump was elected president.
Islamophobia, defined as “unfounded hostility towards Muslims and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims” has become frighteningly commonplace in the U.S. and this hatred and misinformation has found fertile soil in the past eight months of the Trump presidency.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has documented 451 incidents that stemmed from anti-Muslim bias between April 1 and June 30, 2017, 15 percent of which were acts of violence against Muslims. This represents a 91 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes during that time compared to the same time period in 2016….
The irony here is that most Americans really have no idea what is in the Quran, the Muslim equivalent of the Bible, beyond the mostly negative and out of context soundbites they hear on talk radio, cable TV or the internet. They have no idea that the three monotheistic religions that follow the same Abrahamic tradition, namely that Abraham was the first prophet of God, are Judaism, Christianity and yes, the third sibling, Islam….
The Quran specifically protects Jews and Christians as Peoples of the Book, the “Book” meaning revelations from God to Jews and Christians which gives them a spiritual connection to Islam.
As such, Islam recognizes as prophets many of the figures revered by Jews and Christians, including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. For Muslims, Muhammad is not a divine being. Instead he is a prophet through whom God delivered his message and an example of piety to emulate. Muhammad is not the equivalent of Jesus in the Islamic tradition, rather it is the Quran that occupies the same central position in Islam as Jesus does in Christianity.
It would surprise many to know that the Prophet Muhammad is only mentioned a total of four times in the Quran while Jesus, the son of Mary, is mentioned 25 times and Moses 136 times. The Quran dedicates a whole chapter to Mary, who is the only woman mentioned by name in the sacred text.
The Islamic version of the Jesus story especially, is quite similar to the Christian version. Jesus is variously referred to as “Spirit from God, “Word from/of God”), “Prophet-Messenger of God,” and the “Messiah” who will come back on the Day of Judgment to destroy the Antichrist.
Beginning with his birth, Muslims believe that Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary in a miraculous birth ordained by God. The Quranic verse says:
“Relate in the Book the story of Mary, when she withdrew from her family, to a place in the East. She screened herself from them; then We sent to her Our spirit (angel Gabriel) and he appeared before her as a man in all respects. She said: ‘I seek refuge from you in God Most Gracious (come not near) if you do fear God.’ He said: ‘Nay, I am only a Messenger from your Lord, to announce to you the gift of a pure son.’ She said: ‘How shall I have a son, when no man has ever touched me, and I am not unchaste?’ He said: ‘So it will be, your Lord says: ‘That is easy for Me; and We wish to appoint him as a sign unto men and a Mercy from Us: It was a matter so decreed.’ ” (Quran 19:16-21).
The Quran also relays how Jesus spoke in the cradle: “Then she (Mary) pointed to him. They said: ‘How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?’ He (Jesus) said: ‘Verily! I am a slave of God, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet.” (Quran 19:29-30).
The miracles performed by Jesus were not limited to his cradle according to the Quran. Muslims believe Jesus performed miracles throughout his life: “Then will God say: ‘O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favor to you and to your mother. Behold! I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit (the angel Gabriel) so that you did speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught you the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel. And behold: you make out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and you breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by My leave, and you heal those born blind, and the lepers by My leave. And behold! you bring forth the dead by My leave.’ ” (Quran 5:110).
Naturally there are theological differences between Muslims and Christians regarding Jesus but there are far more similarities and these similarities are what should be emphasized in order to show the common ground between these two faiths, which together represent 4.1 billion followers worldwide and 55.3 percent of the world’s population….

As Robert Spencer detailed in his introduction, the Qur’an denies the core teachings of Christianity: that Christ was the unique son of God, that he died on the cross, and was raised from the dead. If there is an ‘anti-Christ’ religion, Islam fits the bill perfectly. That the National Catholic Reporter could publish such nonsense is a symptom of how much trouble we are in because of ignorance, disinformation, fear, and selfishness masquerading as compassion. You can’t be compassionate if you won’t take the trouble to find out the most basic facts about the object of your compassion.

So much garbage in one small bit of print.
First of all, Abraham was not the “first prophet.”
When Adam and Eve were put out of the Garden, the first prophecy was said then, namely, enmity between God’s children and satan’s children. And the most important part, that the Son of God would come and be killed by satan, but that He would kill satan.
And, before Abraham, there lived Enoch and Noah, who also foretold things that God gave them to share with other humans.
On top of those things of which this fool has no knowledge, the character that moslums say is Jesus is non-existent and this fictitious person bears no resemblance to Jesus Christ.
A lot of outright lies can be found in this ridiculous writing. It’s all just a pack of them.

I’m kinda on vacation, so no way I’m going to read that stupid book now, but I do recall that mo seems to always be mentioned, perhaps not by name, but Al’s messenger this, and messenger that.
And the constant use of third person often sounds like Al and Mo.
If mo doesn’t get a mention, it’s likely because he wrote the daft book citing Al as his alter ego, so this lack of reference adds to the feeling that Al and mo are one and the same.
In any case, randomly talking about someone called isa does not make mohamed any less of a charletan.

Mohammed the Pedophile Prophet has scant mention in the Quran, but his example is put forth as that of the perfect man. Being a cult, Islam is actually Mohammedanism, i.e. placing its founder as the most important individual in history.
When Mohammed’s example is revered, it’s little wonder that Mohammedans engage in mass murder, rape, human trafficking, and various and sundry destruction.
Islam is Satan’s religion – the evil one rejoices in it.

“The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”
How Christians can be so blind to the hypocrisy of Rome amazes me.

James says
That paragraph, if you read between the lines – as such documents have to be read – is not saying very much; certainly nothing incompatible with faith in Christ. The word “profess” is the key to what is said – nothing is being granted to Islam; those lines are non-committal, without being rude. Which is a good balance to strike.
I may be “blind to the hypocrisy of Rome” – but only if “Rome” is guilty of “hypocrisy” here; but where is the “hypocrisy” ? Maybe the boot is on the other foot.
eduardo odraude says
This part of paragraph 481 does not say “profess”:
Surely that is false. Allah as described in the Qur’an is very different from the God of the Bible. Allah in the Qur’an tells human beings that they are not made in his image, for example. See https://quotingislam.blogspot.com/2011/06/core-islamic-texts-disagree-with-bible.html
Allah is mainly a God of fiat and command who defines human beings as his servants or slaves. The Biblical God is mainly a God of creative activity, who defines human beings as his children who are to imitate his creative activity, for example to “be fruitful and multiply.” One of the reasons democracy developed in Europe is that the Bible conceives the relationship between God and humans as contractual, as based on covenants. Even under European serfdom, the relationship was not unadulterated despotism: it was understood as contractual. The contractual element is largely absent from the Qur’an.
There are many other truly essential differences between Allah and the Judeo-Christian God. Even if one believes, as atheists do, that all religions are tissues of pure fantasy, nevertheless, some of those “fantasies” lead to very different social outcomes than others. The Judeo-Christian God tends over time to open societies. Allah creates tyrannies.
Greyhound Fancier says
I think your comment is correct – “professing” is giving an opinion, not necessarily stating the truth.
The statement from the catechism is quite gracious toward Mohammedans, who regularly twist the teachings of Christianity and Judaism into a pretzel.

Koran is a very bad copy and paste work from the Bible and Torah overseen by Mo. I came across an article which mentioned that Mo was not comfortable with Jesus being the son of God and his resurrection. Since Mo was an imposter he made it up that Jesus was merely a prophet.

Dave Flang says
Please red the entier article before jumping to a conclusion.
That this Jesus is God. For me, God was only Allah. And I believe Allah never got married so no sons for Allah. So I preached there that Jesus is not God. Then somebody asked me “Who is Jesus?” from the crowd. Maybe a Muslim, but he asked me, “Who is Jesus?” I was preaching He is not God but the question was, “Who is he?” To know who is He, I read the entire Koran once again: I read 114 chapters, 6666 words in the Koran. When I read it, the name of the Prophet Mohammad I found in Koran 4 places but the name of Jesus I found in 25 places. There itself, I was a little confused. Why does the Koran give more preference to Jesus? And the second thing: I could not see any women’s name in Koran: the Prophet Mohammad’s mother’s name, or wife’s name or children’s name, no. In the Koran, there is only one woman’s name that I found: I found Mariam, the mother of Jesus. No other woman’s name. And in the holy Koran chapter 3 the name of the chapter is “Family of Mariam,” and the holy Koran chapter 19 the name of the chapter itself is “Mariam”. One chapter is “Mariam”. So I was very curious to know “Why does the Koran say all these things?” About Mariam. Holy Koran chapter 3 verses 34 onwards says that Mary was born without original sin, she never committed any sin in her life, she was ever virgin. Koran chapter 50 verse 23 says that she went to Heaven with her physical body. Even the Assumption is written in the holy Koran. And then about Jesus, when I read chapter 3 verses 45 to 55 verses, there are 10 points which the Koran makes about Jesus. The first thing Koran says. (phrase in Ababic), the Arabic word which means “Word of God”, and the second thing, (phrase in Arabic) which means “Spirit of God.” And the third is (phrase in Arabic) which means “Jesus Christ”. So Koran gives the name for Jesus: Word of God, Spirit of God, Jesus Christ. And then Koran says that Jesus spoke when he was very small like 2 days old, after his birth He began to speak. Koran says that Jesus created a live bird with mud. He took some mud, formed a bird, when he breathed into it, it became a live bird. So I think that he can give life. He gave life to mud, clay. And then Koran says that Jesus cured a man born blind and a man with leprosy, etc. Curiously the Koran says that Jesus gave life to dead people. Jesus went to Heaven. He is still alive and He will come again. When I saw all these things in the Koran my thinking what the Koran says about Mohammad. You know, according to the Koran, Prophet Mohammed is not the Word of God, not the Spirit of God, never spoke when he was 2 days old, never created any bird with mud, never cured any sick people, never raised any dead people he himself died and according to Islam he is not alive and he will not come back. So there is a lot of difference between these two prophets. I didn’t call Jesus, God, you know. My idea was “He’s a prophet, but he is a prophet greater than Mohammad.” So one day I went to my teacher the one who taught me 10 years in Arabic College and I asked him, “Teacher, how did God create the universe?” Then he said, “God created the universe through the word.” THROUGH THE WORD. Then my question: “Word” is creator or creation? Must clear it. My question whether the Word of God is Creator or creation. Koran says Jesus is Word of God. If my teacher says that the Word of God is Creator which means Jesus is Creator then the Muslims must become Christian.
gravenimage says
Of course, this is not what Islam says at all.
gravenimage says
I should add that it is far more common for Muslims to claim that “Jesus” is a link between Christianity and Islam, as a way to snow the credulous Infidels.
In any case, this posits the idea that the Qur’an is entirely correct, and then pretends that this leads to Christianity–but this ignores everything else the Qur’an says about Christianity, and its enjoining the organized oppression and murder of Christians.
Ra’fat Al-Dajani cannot be unaware of this.
If you are familiar with this “journalist’s” output, you can see that he is generally a thoroughgoing dhimmi who regularly advocates bowing to Islam, especially when it comes to Israel:
https://www.ncronline.org/authors/rafat-al-dajani
He also slams Catholics for having an unfavorable opinion of Muslims:
“Only 14 percent of US Catholics have a favorable opinion of Muslims”
https://www.ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/only-14-percent-us-catholics-have-favorable-opinion-muslims
From his profile, it is hard to tell if he is a “Palestinian” Christian, a Muslim, or a Muslim apostate–but it hardly matters. He is an apologist for this vicious creed.
And in the above article he castigates Catholics for attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity, and accuses Catholics of “Islamophobia”. He does not even mention Jihad terror–the elephant in the room.
The only heartening thing is that many of the comments are critical of his whitewash of Islam.
Kay says

Note that most of the things that the Quran says about Christians and Christianity come from well-known ancient heresies: Arianism (denying the Trinity and the Incarnation), Docetism (denying the Crucifixion) and Gnostic works such as the Gospel of Thomas and the Coptic Apocalypse of Peter. Speaking as a jumble of ancient heresies, Islam proves itself to be exactly that. This was clear to writers such as St John of Damascus, Hilaire Belloc and many others. So should Christians really be asked to read these fabrications and falsehoods sympathetically, least of all by a writer from a respectable Catholic journal? Instead of writing fawning articles like this, let us ask Catholic journalists to consider ways for Christians to correct Muslim ignorance on Christianity and instruct them on exactly what Christ and Christianity truly teach, for there is absolutely nothing in the Quran about what Christ actually taught. We could start with the verse that says “Love your enemy”!

In his book “Which God?” Australian anglican priest and scholar, Rev Dr Mark Durie, discusses the differences between the Biblical God – as represented in the TaNaKh and the New Testament – and the Islamic concept of ‘god’. He has a chapter on the Jesus of the Christian Gospels, contrasted point by point with the Islamic ‘Isa’. Conclusion: YHWH and ‘allah’ are diametrically opposed; and the Islamic ‘Isa’ has nothing of any significance in common with the Christians’ Jesus.
Also, ex-Muslim Patrick Sookhdeo has written a useful little pamphlet for the Barnabas Fund. In fact, the main purpose of “Jesus” in Islam is to “break the cross and kill the pigs” in the last days–that is, to destroy dhimmitude, the small, uncertain space under Islam where Christians may live and worship. After this, they face the stark choice of converting to Islam or death. So–the main role of “Jesus” in Islam is to *kill Christians*.

This article and the fact that it was published in a Catholic journal really bothered me so I sent the editors this letter. I expect no reply:
Regarding: “The Muslim Jesus provides common ground for Christianity, Islam” article of Aug 25, 2017.
How dare you publish this article in a Catholic journal! Isa is not Christ and there is no common ground between the two. You are either misled or ignorant because the differences, and there are many, are overwhelming and unbridgeable. Some of what Islam teaches about Isa and Mary should be considered sacrilegious to Catholics. For example, did the author of this piece mention that in the Islamic scriptures it is written that when Isa returns at the second coming he will “break all the crosses,” and lead a genocidal war against all nonbelievers (Christians among others)? Did he tell you that in the Islamic scriptures it is written that Allah promised the Virgin Mary to Mohammad as a wife (or rather, rape victim)? He did not include these and other items in his article, did he? And you took him at his word that the connection was innocuous.
As a Catholic journal you should have seen the red flag: that Islam adamently denies the divinity of Isa (Christ). (In fact, they believe that Christians are engaging in one of the worst Islamic sins, idolatry.) How does that create common ground; the divinity of Christ is a central tenet of Christianity?
The truth is that the “Muslim Jesus,” Isa, is very problematic for all Christians (most of all Catholics) and does NOT provide any common ground. In fact, Muslims have a lot of explaining to do when it comes to Isa when they pretend to engage in ‘inter-faith dialog’.
This editorial failure is inexcusable. I am very offended that you were involved in the dissemination of this nonsense!

As for the Christian message, the New Testament never commands to hate anyone.
So they are opposite teachings. The Koran commands hate, and the Bible commands love. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

The Jesus in the Quran is not divine, not God and bows to the Prophet Mohammad as the last and true messenger of God. This is not the Jesus Christ of Christianity. There is no common ground between Christianity and Islam because Islam is a heresy.

Everything Jesus said, including prophecies, came through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The koran we see gets everything wrong about Jesus.
That’s probably because allah didn’t seem to know what the Holy Spirit was about since he thought the Trinity was a 3 god polytheistic system.
How odd it is of allah to make such a theological error.
How strange that allah misunderstood the Holy Spirit:it is not a separate god but the Voice of God Himself.
The Holy Spirit is the Voice of God.
Yet allah didn’t seem to understand that. .
There is no sign of the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit anywhere in the koran:because if there was, allah would not have completely misunderstood Jesus Christ.
Or be so anti-Semitic:allah would have perfectly understood the Jews.

God of the Bible says that a Word issued out of His mouth will not return without fulfilling its Errand. Therefore, the Word of God cannot change without its fulfillment. Therefore the God of Bible and the Allah of Quran are two opposite Persons. Therefore Catholics should be rejected too.

Why do you want to “reject Catholics”? Few Catholics embrace the vicious “Allah”.

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Tonantzin or the Virgin Mary? : Mexico History
While any discussion of the question of authenticity is outside the scope of this article, the use of these terms by Catholic writers is not. For example, one writer argues that in section # 26 of the Nican Mopohua, the Virgin is saying that she is the Mother of all the ancient Aztec deities! It follows from this, according to this writer, that the Virgin has incorporated the whole of Nahuatl (Aztec) philosophy and theology into Christianity, and thereby laid the foundation for the evangelization of the Indians. On this interpretation Aztec philosophy is nothing more than a Christian invention. But as M. Portilla showed in his work on Nahuatl philosophy, these terms predate the arrival of the Spanish missionaries and so cannot be used to prove Christian influence.

Jesus is NOT Muslim..
How scandalous to use Our Savior to draw people into murderous Islam. Muslims don’t believe that Jesus was the Son of God. They don’t believe He was crucified on the cross. They deny the resurrection. Other than that, they think Jesus is a pretty good camel-jockey. They’re OK with the fact he lied about the God-thing. Muslims think lying is cool. The end justifies the means. Anything to advance Islam…even putting up lying messages about Jesus on billboards. All good Muslims lie.
How dare they. How dare they hijack Jesus during the most sacred of Christian seasons. Can you imagine if Christians had put a billboard up in the Muslim neighborhood reading “JESUS IS LORD” during Ramadan? You know what the reaction would be…hope you have fire insurance.

I doubt either of these politicians are terribly knowledgeable about Pope Francis’s appeasement of Islam–this is likely just a nod at respecting the head of the Catholic Church. I would not make too much of it.

UNCLE VLADDI says
I just posted a few comments there – and so am now waiting to be censored and/or banned for my trouble LOL:
“The false Jesus described in the Qur’an is a muslim who was not the son of God, didn’t die (at all, much less for everyone’s sins) and will return to murder the remaining Christians and break the cross over their heads. The Qur’an says:
Christianity is wrong (sura 5:14);
Jesus is not the son of god (suras 19:35; 4:171);
Those who believe Jesus is God’s son are accursed (9:30-35; 19:88-89; 37:151-152; 61:6);
Jesus was not crucified (4:157).
Further, Christianity teaches original sin, guilt, free-will choice and personal responsibility; while islam teaches (abuses its victims with) the exact opposite: that there was no original sin, and no free-will choice because allah is a slaver who is behind your every action, such that when, like Muhammad, you commit a crime, then if you got away with it, it was never a crime at all, since allah caused you to commit it and let you get away with it. But if you got caught, only then was a crime, because that was allah’s will, too. Islam is a crime.”
