“They will not rest until every one of the names on SPLC’s dubious 900-member hate list is purged from the Internet. Make no mistake.”
Indeed. But is it possible that the SPLC made a mistake, or added in some groups based on political motives? Why, of course not: the SPLC is infallible in matters of “hate groups”:
“Note what they didn’t do? They didn’t actually read the sites to verify they were ‘hate sites.'”
What we are seeing happening is a quintessentially fascist, totalitarian enterprise, advancing rapidly with no pushback.
“Is Google Working with Liberal Groups to Snuff Out Conservative Websites?,” by Paula Bolyard, PJ Media, August 19, 2017:
UPDATE August 19 5:43 p.m.: ProPublica came out today with the expected hit piece on Robert Spencer, Jihad Watch, and others they disagree with, repeating the Southern Poverty Law Center’s smears and legitimizing the dishonest group’s hate list. In the article titled “Despite Disavowals, Leading Tech Companies Help Extremist Sites Monetize Hate,” Lauren Kirchner along with two fellow
journalistsactivists documented the recent blacklisting of “hate websites” by tech companies and, although they didn’t come right out and say it, strongly implied that this should be the norm. They accept without question the hate designations bestowed by the SPCL and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The article leaves no doubt that ProPublica — which is working with Google, remember — wants to see more blacklisting. They will not rest until every one of the names on SPLC’s dubious 900-member hate list is purged from the Internet. Make no mistake. They are marshaling forces to pressure advertisers and tech providers to take conservative sites down. Just take a look at this list of Christian groups that made the list because they haven’t jumped on the LGBTQ bandwagon.ProPublica explained what they’re doing with excruciating duplicity under the guise of “journalism”:
We supplemented the SPLC list with a list of top extremist websites provided to us by the Anti-Defamation League. The ADL does not publish this list and supplied it to us for research purposes. [Wasn’t that super helpful of the ADL?]
See the list of websites we investigated. Download the data.
We located websites associated with the SPLC hate groups and combined it with the ADL’s list of hate sites. [Because 917 isn’t enought — they want more scalps.] We then compared the combined SPLC/ADL lists with the Alexa’s Top Million websites and filtered our list to use only websites that had enough traffic to appear in the top million sites worldwide.
We then wrote software to automatically browse to each website and collect a list of external domains contacted by each website. In the wake of Charlottesville, some popular white nationalist websites, such as The Daily Stormer, were shut down and we removed them from our list. Others, such as Richard Spencer’s National Policy Initiative, were shut down after we finished collecting data and so we included them in our results.
In order to identify which domains loaded advertisements or provided payment forms for the hate sites, and to eliminate domains that only provided basic functionality, we checked the external domains we found on those sites against the AdBlock Easylist. This crowdsourced list is used by ad blocking software to hide ads when users are browsing the internet.
[…]
In order to verify our results, we visited every website and clicked on the payment links to determine if a working credit card form was loaded, and we visually inspected each site to ensure that the ad networks were actually delivering ads when we loaded the page.
Note what they didn’t do? They didn’t actually read the sites to verify they were “hate sites.” It continues:
We then contacted all the websites and the tech companies and asked them to verify whether our results were correct. In some cases, such as Google Custom Search, the company clarified for us that although some websites were using the technology, none were being paid for its use.
If the SPLC and ADL, with their (growing) list of “hate groups” are going to be the arbiter for approved online speech, we have reached a very scary place in this country. It will be the end of the Internet as we know it and America will be no better than totalitarian China and N. Korea.
Guy Forester says
I wonder if there are grounds for a lawsuit against both, as you now have documented financial losses as well as an attempt to limit or negate first amendment free speech.
I hope that several of these now delisted sites can try a class action lawsuit against both. You are free to offer an opinion, but not free to act to limit the rights of others or to cause financial harm as an attempt to limit the rights of others. A form of extortion.
Interweb Deuce says
It is ridiculous how the SPLC and ADL continue to impugn and slander individuals and groups who have actual valid concerns which are fact based with evidence and events. The Left shows how they are willing to censor and go after anyone they disagree with, not based on any merit, but simply based on ‘if you’re not Left you’re wrong and must be shut down’ mentality.

When arrogance arises, evil isn’t far behind. “I’ve long regarded Morris Dees and his Southern Poverty Law Center as collectively one of the greatest frauds in American life,” wrote the late progressive journalist Alexander Cockburn in 2007.
By accepting the corrupt list of the SPLC, without question, ProPublica has entered the area of supporting fraudulent accusations, and is now (possibly, unknowingly) committing fraud.
There are too many entities being recklessly damaged for the SPLC and ProPublica to avoid lawsuits. I would suggest that JihadWatch join with the Christian groups in a group lawsuit and help the SPLC and ProPublica spend down their war chests; when a positive judgement is reached at the SCOTUS then decide whether to sue PayPal, Amazon, etc for damages. If Paypal lost a large judgement they wiuld be inclined to sue ProPublica for false information, and ProPublica might then sue the SPLC to recover their losses. In any case, neither the SPLC or ProPublica has done Due Diligence.
I for one will donate to the costs of said lawsuit.

What is Pay Pal’s responsibility. I love to use PayPal as it is easy, but are they also deciding to drop people or organizations because of what they call hate speech? I am disappointed in all of the tech companies. I do not get why they are liberal when they have been so successful in a capitalist society. Liberals like socialism, which does not promote free market capitalism.
Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY) says
Naive questions: Do users have any legally enforceable contract with companies like PayPal and Google? If so, how do the two parties get a copy of the contract signed by both the parties (including by an officer of the company)? Surely cursor-clicking does not count, because there is no proof of who clicked, or which cat pounced on the computer mouse. Where can I find information about the enforceability of such online “contracts”? (By the way, a month ago I wrote a handwritten letter to the Verizon legal department asking for a copy of their customer contract for internet-telephone-TV service, for review by me and my lawyer. I am still waiting for an answer.)
billybob says
Do users have any legally enforceable contract with companies like PayPal and Google?
Of course they do. There is usually a Terms of Service statement available for any service you use, and it is indeed legally enforceable. This defines your contract with said service, and its terms are legally binding to both parties. Only one small problem. These terms are ALL in favour of the service provider, and provide no relief for you whatsoever. It is a take it or leave it proposition for you. By using the service, you automatically agree to all the terms – that give you no rights whatsoever.

I just got news of this over on Brietbart.
Back when the Internet got going there was the sentiment that it would liberate voices to speak freely and break the chains put of free speakers put on us by the opinion programmers in the mainstream media. And to some extent that happened. But when speech got digitized, a dark lining was put on that sunny cloud. Ditto for when fund raising got digitized. Power was centralized into the hands of the technology elites, virtually all of whom are liberal and thus against free speech.
And the tech elite are now on a campaign to curtail hate speech, whatever that is. Oh the irony and telling the factual truth, even when easily verified, is what’s getting silenced. Meanwhile, actual hate speech, based on lies and evil suppositions, is flourishing.
The day is not too far off when they’ll step beyond putting brakes on funding sites like this and will simply shut it down by government edict. If you doubt that, remember that the judiciary is almost entirely liberal and has made a growing sequence of illegal decisions in just the recent past.

Thanks for all that you do. There is no worse example of hate than the jihad being waged by Islamic extremists and keeping people informed of their activities is a very loving thing to do. They should take it up with them.

She received the note below from ProPublica.
Did Robert Spencer also receive such a note?
==================
Hello Ms. Corcoran,
I am a reporter at ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative newsroom in New York. I am contacting you to let you know that we are including your website in a list of sites that have been designated as hate or extremist by the American Defamation League or the Southern Poverty Law Center. We have identified all the tech platforms that are supporting websites on the ADL and SPLC lists.
We would like to ask you a few questions:
1) Do you disagree with the designation of your website as hate or extremist? Why?
2) We identified one tech company on your website, PayPal. Can you confirm that you receive funds from your relationship with those them? How would the loss of those funds affect your operations, and how would you be able to replace them?
3) Have you been shut down by other tech companies for being an alleged hate or extremist web site? Which companies?
4) Many people opposed to sites like yours are currently pressuring tech companies to cease their relationships with them – what is your view of this campaign? Why?
Our deadline is 5pm EST today.
Thank you,
Lauren Kirchner

Here is one of them:

JihadWatch.org is a “hate” site? That’s damned ridiculous.
Significant portions of Islam’s core texts clearly do advocate and/or encourage hate and violence against non-Muslims as well as against Muslims with independent interpretations as well as against those who leave Islam.
Is it “hate speech” to point that out? Of course not.
And “hating” that aspect and that interpretation of Islam — and exposing those who follow that interpretation – is not “hate speech” either.
i.e. It’s not bigotry of any sort.
Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch exposes hate and bigotry and violent acts based –according to the perpetrators themselves — on specific interpretations/readings of Islam.
That’s what SPLC and ADL SHOULD be doing also if they kept to their mission.
Instead, they indiscriminately and unjustly clump together individuals who don’t have a bigoted or hateful bone in their bodies with truly bad types.
Not good.

I would suggest, gravenimage, that the last word you wrote, i.e., “Madness,” is pretty much equatable to modern Western Leftism. I do distinguish old-fashion liberalism from what it has devolved into, i.e., Leftism, but I also think there is a connection, a thread, running between old-fashion liberalism to modern Western Leftism and this is why I often use the term “modern liberalism” instead of “Leftism” to indicate this thread, this “continuity.”
Old-fashion liberalism, which was sane to be sure and never confused evil with good, was still too inclined to more government, to more control of the populace, for instance government-run health care like Medicare and Medicaid instead of health-care savings accounts that would be tax-free or health-care vouchers (much as food stamps) for the poorest Americans. Big things (including stupid big things) have small beginnings, rather like the acorn that grows into a mighty oak tree (though a mighty oak tree is a good thing while……). In short, the inclination to more government led to far worse things because more government very rarely works out well, short-term or long-term.
Well, you get my point here. Unfortunately, while many Republicans still have sound ideas too many of them have lost their guts. A person like Romney comes to mind.

I take your point, Wellington–but I don’t think it had to be this way. Still, it is, and creeps like those at Antifa and the SPLC are now ironically wearing the liberal mantle, which is just shameful. I think this is why many real liberals are increasingly identifying as conservatives–I largely include myself among them.
And while you know that I am–in general–more liberal than yourself, I don’t want you tho think that I am for big government–I am not. Generally, I am just for freedom of speech and equal rights (real equal rights, not special rights for in groups). I know many conservatives are for just the same things.

What needs to be circulated as much as possible, and I confess I’m not sure of the many ways to do it, is that the SPLC is itself a hate group. In fact, it’s arguably a greater and more menacing hate group than the KKK and the Neo-Nazis because I’m not aware that these admittedly atrocious organizations want to shut down free speech as the SPLC does AND such right-wing hate groups, let’s face it, have relatively few members, few overall supporters and almost no substantial financial backers. By contrast, the SPLC has quite a following one way or another and is drowning in money (just look at the salaries of its “leaders” for confirmation of this financial fact).
Yes, the SPLC is one of the most powerful hate groups in America. Turn the tables on these leftist, fascist bastards one way or another. For starters, how about a bumper sticker that reads “The SPLC is a hate group.” Just sayin’ here.
Japetto Donatelli says
It looks to me like the SPLC is the biggest hate group of them all, suing and blackballing anyone they don’t agree with. They present themselves as some kind of civil rights group, but they act like Nazi brownshirts smashing heads and breaking windows. They look to me more like fascists with a partisan political agenda than an objective watchdog fighting hate. And by the way, who appointed these self-important crusaders the task of deciding who and what is hateful, anyway? I’d like to know. This Morris Dees guy must think he’s god or something, telling others what they can and can’t talk about. I’ve seen their list of “haters,” it’s an outrage that Spencer’s site is on the same list with skinhead Nazis and the KKK, and so is Geller’s “Atlas Shrugs” and “ACT for America!” both ardent defenders of freedom and purveyors of important news and views about islam. Who but a bigoted idiot would ever think Brigitte Gabriel, a true patriot and defender of human rights, should be defamed as a dangerous “hater?” Who but a biased ignoramus could think an intelligent humanitarian scholar like Spencer is working to advance hate? And who but a close-minded bigot would think that a passionate defender of freedom and educator like Pamela Geller is anything resembling the KKK or Nazis?
From my deepest heart I think this is a great injustice what this organization does, the SPLC. They do not operate in the spirit of goodwill, they don’t honor free speech and they are mean in their tactics, suing and defaming worthy people that deserve to have a voice in America. The SPLC isn’t reducing hate they are causing it with their hateful strong arm tactics and infringing on the right of others to Constitutional free expression. It almost seems criminal in some cases, and it’s certainly immoral. They are not the “good guys,” they only pretend to be the good guys.
Well they can call me a “hate group” too for all I care, cuz I’m hating them big. I’m going to pull out my trusty Voodoo Doll (my god of choice) and I’m going to curse them into the ground. I’m going to pray to my little stuffed god fervently until those hateful haters suffer the same unjust and cruel treatment they dispense onto others. And there ain’t a d*amn thing they can do about it cuz religious freedom guarantees me that right. and if they care as much for me as they do islam and muslims then they’ll honor my right to do it! So good luck with your dark and glum future, cuz my god always, f*cking always, answers my prayers.
Geller, Spencer, and Brigette, SUE THEM! and demand they stop defaming your character.

I see now that David French has published a headline article at NRO on the left’s move to squelch free speech on the Internet featuring PayPal’s move on JihadWatch. As is typical for the RINOs, French couldn’t help but write “ProPublica, a respected journalism outlet” in the piece. Well, is it *still* respected? Of course it will, that’s a permanent status. This is the same as the required lead-in that Robert Mueller has unassailable integrity, even though he accepted the Special Counsel assignment knowing full well that doing so is a violation of the special counsel law, prohibiting counsels who are friends or business associates of targets and witnesses.

SPLC’s hate group directory also includes fathers’ rights / men’s rights groups under the class “mysogyny”. For example, Paul Elam’s “A Voice for Men”. (Unlike the radical feminists on SPLC, real feminists support both good parents of daughters, also fathers. Clearly, SPLC’s expanded agenda and biased scope has greatly weakened its focus on actual hate violence.)
Norger says
One of the best sound bites on this issue comes from this article:
“Protecting free speech is not something we do because we agree with all of the speech that gets protected. We do it because we believe that no one—not the government and not private commercial enterprises—should decide who gets to speak and who doesn’t.”
The issue is whether the SPLC, ProPubica (or whatever their name is) should have to power to decide who gets to speak on an issue– Islamic terrorism and jihad– which is a legitimate subject of public discourse. Robert Spencer is harshly critical of Islam because he is intelligent, articulate, deeply learned and takes an honest, unflinching look at Islamic history and Islamic theology. The SPLC et al don’t have a single representative who could stand up to Robert Spencer for 5 minutes (without being utterly demolished) in a legitimate discussion or debate on, for example, whether Islam is a religion of peace. For a few years now, the tactic has been to demonize Spencer by smearing him, without actually engaging with him on the substance of his views. (“Don’t you know that he was banned from entering the UK”) The “smear campaign” hasn’t worked, mainly because Mr. Spencer is good at he does, and speaks the truth. Robert Spencer is too effective, therefore he must be silenced. It really is quintessentially fascistic.

Also, Christians see two types of people: converts and potential converts. We are to love all; God first, our family in Jesus, our family, friends, strangers, and even enemies. There was no room on the list for hate, and we don’t hate people, we hate sin and false religion.

This is utterly ridiculous, but it is also quite frightening. We are seeing this country falling apart to the point you can’t even give a horse the same name as Robert E. Lee’s horse. Anything is “hate” if it disagrees with you. The Republicans are a hate group to the Democrats and the Democrats are hate group to the Republicans. The Bible is hate literature because it condemns sins someone might want to commit. I am sorry, but I do no see anything on this web site that could be construed as hate – unless it is hate to warn someone that an individual intends to kill them. Robert Spenser is a patriot! This web site would not be necessary if the news media would inform the American public about the terrorism taking place daily throughout the world. What Mr. Spenser does by warning about Muslims is no different than someone warning a family with young children that the dog they just brought home is a rabid pit bull. Will it bite or kill the children? Who knows? But shouldn’t they know what they are bringing into their home?
Japetto Donatelli says
Good analogy, don’t warn about the rabid pit bull, we don’t want to offend the rabies virus. It’s the same with islam, don’t warn about its fascist hate because we can’t offend those who live it. And let’s not condemn crime either, we don’t want to offend the criminals. And whatever you do, don’t defend liberty and equality over religious barbarity, or you’ll be a racist bigot islamophobe. We have a movement in the west that says tolerating the intolerable is a moral and legal obligation for us all, even if it might get us killed or destroy our nation’s freedoms. It reminds me of the Salem witch hunts, except now truth and freedom are the demons they want to destroy.
