Leave Islam. Forget reforming Islam. Never been done in 14 centuries. Muhammad in Mecca was not such a sweetheart. He was plotting the demise of the Meccans and Jews and made the covert Pledge of Aqaba (“blood blood, destruction destruction”). Its a complete lie he was ever about anything else. His embrace of the Jews was phony, as he soon proved. This is the model of conduct for all Muslims.

A moving story depicting the dark world of Islam from the inside, the isolation (from kaffirs) of the Muslim community, even within America. The contrast of his experience in Islam to the joy in life of the Christians he encounters. His critical examination of Islam leading him right out of Islam, because Islam does not hold up to scrutiny. Then the complete ostracism from his family that comes with conversion and apostasy.
Meanwhile, you have the opposite in the story of a supposedly Christian American, “al-Amriki”–not a kid but a grown man with a family–wanting to convert to Islam, wanting to run off and join the Caliphate (and participate in the promised apocalyptic end times), and wanting to rape and murder the unbelievers and the enemies of Allah. And believing that in raping and murdering he is doing WORSHIP (i.e. the Islamic prayers before raping his captive). Blood, death, war and human sacrifice. What Allah knows best.
But really, someone lured by the “peaceful” Islam, soft-soap sold to him with friendly da’wa, would not be repelled and horrified on discovering the real Islam? And anyone joining the Islamic State has discovered the real Islam. Somehow I doubt the lure of Islam for al-Amrika was anything so innocent.
He became an “emir” after all.
But it will be fascinating to see the completed movie and find out the truth, especially if it leads to his capture (though he supposedly carries poison with him to avoid capture). In any case, time is surely running out on this traitorous and demonic thug who used to be “one of us.”

It’s clear that muslims are in an abusive relationship with their ‘religion’.
As with all abusive relationships, leaving is usually the only certain remedy.
