Tunisia has abolished a decades-old ban on Muslim women marrying non-Muslims…Tunisia is viewed as being ahead of most Arab countries on women’s rights, but there is still discrimination particularly in matters of inheritance
This represents a victory for Muslim women, but it also highlights the ubiquitous inequality of women under Sharia principles throughout Muslim countries, as well as the inequality of and discrimination against unbelievers.
Tunisia also recently “passed a landmark law to ‘end all violence’ against women,” despite the teaching of the Qur’an:
Men are in charge of women by right of what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend for maintenance from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in the husband’s absence what Allah would have them guard. But those wives from whom you fear arrogance – first advise them; then if they persist, forsake them in bed; and finally, strike them. (Quran 4:34)
“Tunisia Ends Ban on Non-Muslim Men Marrying Muslim Women”, Breitbart, September 15, 2017:
(AFP) — Tunisia has abolished a decades-old ban on Muslim women marrying non-Muslims, the presidency said Thursday.
“Congratulations to the women of Tunisia for the enshrinement of the right to the freedom to choose one’s spouse,” presidency spokeswoman Saida Garrach wrote on Facebook. The announcement comes a month after President Beji Caid Essebsi called for the government to scrap the ban dating back to 1973.
Until now a non-Muslim man who wished to marry a Tunisian woman had to convert to Islam and submit a certificate of his conversion as proof…..
Tunisia is viewed as being ahead of most Arab countries on women’s rights, but there is still discrimination particularly in matters of inheritance.

The fact is that Muslims don’t allow their women to marry non muslims because they know it is non islamic, not because the government doesn’t allow it. Muslims in the west practice this ban on such marriages even though all governments in the west allow it.
Peter Buckley says
“Muslims in the west practice this ban on such marriages even though all governments in the west allow it.””
You clearly haven’t a clue what you are talking about. These marriages are quite common:
“In the UK, 21,000 interfaith marriages were recorded in 2001. Although no new statistics on the issue have been released since then, imams in the UK told Al Jazeera that these figures have surged in recent years.”
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/12/2012122795639455824.html
The fact is, as I repeatedly point out, that even those who continue to self-identify as “muslims”, are , possibly unwittingly, rejecting Quran, and moving away from (leaving) Islam. Remember the recent ruling in Tunisia, which rejected Quran in favour of secular, humanist law……
Jack Diamond says
and from from that article:
“Interfaith relationships have at times led to ostracism and violence against the couples, sometimes even resulting in forced marriages and honour killings. According to the UK constabulary, 2,823 honour crimes were reported to the police in 2010 and an estimated 10,000 forced marriages take place in Britain every year.
Many women in interfaith relationships, says Sanghera, have been disowned by their families, who in turn are often shamed with hate mail, threats and assault. “They never overcome the shame element of what their neighbours and the community will think,” says Sanghera. “And their daughters become part of a witch-hunt, always looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.”

“their women ” that’s the main problem.women are not property, regardless of their religious beliefs, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, non-believers, Buddhists …. people are not properties. Muslims do not allow individual freedom.

By doing such move, Tunisian authorities hope that those Muslim women would influence those non-Muslim husbands to eventually convert them to Islam. Don’t assume that Tunisians become “liberal” now and will ever allow those women apostatizing from the iron grip of Ummah and thus becoming non-Muslims!
Gondor says
You’re right about the end goal, but actually it’s not about converting the men at all. It’s about Muslim offspring.
Basically Imam Taj Hargey spells it out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HBknbHp3R4
Muslims have turned round and said let’s make the religion both patrilineal and matrilineal as well.
If kaffir men won’t convert and Muslim women won’t marry. Just change the rulebook so that any offspring are still Muslim and idiot kaffir men pay for the upkeep.

This is such a BIG DEAL that I fully expect sheikhs will soon make fatwas to assassinate politicians. Vigilantism is normative Islam, rather than an aberration.
eduardo odraude says
I will be surprised if this major breach of the sharia ethos is allowed to last. I hope so. Sharia of course permits non-Muslim women to marry Muslim men. But Muslim women marrying non-Muslim men is against sharia, in part because such marriages, it was thought, could undermine the supremacy of Islam.
eduardo odraude says
Clearly, if a Muslim woman marries a non-Muslim man, she is going to find it much easier to abandon Islam than if she marries a Muslim. So this is important.
Baucent says
That’s the key point. Also any children from the marriage may not be raised as muslims. and that is the greatest fear of the Muftis. Any weakening of the hold of Islam over individual lives, weakens Islam as a whole.
John A. Marre says
Marrying a Muslim woman would be the stupidest thing of all. One of her brothers, cousins, uncles or her father would kill you.

Query: What non-Muslim man with any sense would marry a Muslim woman? You’d have to be a doofus of a dhimmi to marry a Muslima. At the very least you’d probably think that Islam is just fine, at worst gullible enough to convert to the worst religion of all time.
Don’t mean to put a damper on what, theoretically, looks like a loosening up of draconian Sharia law, but the kind of non-Muslim man who would marry a Muslim woman (unless she had clearly and unambiguously indicated to the prospective bridegroom that she wants “out” of the Islamic faith) has to be a fool, so how much, in the final analysis, is that a victory for freedom since the preservation of freedom should never rely upon fools to preserve it?

Bravo, Wellington!

I have been to Tunisia and it didn’t seem that liberal to me. You never saw women sitting in cafes or being equal to men. Also with the horrible attacks against tourists at the Bardo Museum and on the beaches, it is clear that the radical element remains strong there. I fear for the couple that tries this.
David says
Let’s wait and see how well this goes with the masses.
LeftisruiningCanada says
Sounds like good thing for women in Tunisia, hopefully many who desire freedom from Islam will find it a little easier to find their way out. As mentioned by posters above, the main hinderance will be potentially violent relatives and the wider faithful population.

What non muslim would even think about doing this? Marry the mutilated, good gosh.
I’m desperate for a woman, any woman, even a woman that is no longer a woman! This is pathetic beyond description.

Oh, come on people…Many Muslim women do not get their clits cut. It’s mostly in certain groups..
Any little progress in this marriage arena is welcome.
I am glad for such changes, even if it comes in little fits and starts. At least it’s something.
Wellington says
But many do get their clits cut and it is endemic in the Islamic world. This should be the point and not yours. As for being glad for this change, please read my September 15th, 5:38 P.M. post above.

A moot action. It takes five minuted to recite Shahada and presto! the man is mohamdenized.

I think women who do this are trying to get out of islam and it is as much as they can do considering the apostasy rule, their kids at least will be free of the disease.
