Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Eyewitness of Barcelona jihad attack: No priest came to comfort wounded, but Cardinal declared all religions peaceful

Oct 7, 2017 10:03 am By Robert Spencer

I received this most interesting email yesterday from Daniel Sexton, an American who was an eyewitness of the recent Barcelona jihad attack. Mr. Sexton is a Catholic, and he wrote an open letter to Cardinal Juan Jose Omella, Archbishop of Barcelona, lamenting Omella’s statements after the massacre, as well as the lack of any response from the Church at the scene. Whether or not you share Mr. Sexton’s faith, the import of this is clear: in Spain, jihadis are aggressively advancing, and in response, the Catholic Church is not only not being true to itself, but is actively aiding and abetting the conquest of the continent: “No priest came to give Last Rites to the dying or comfort the wounded and terrorized. But the Cardinal went to the hospital in the evening and said all religions are religions of peace.”

I have a background in Latin and ancient Greek and found your book Did Muhammad Exist?  to be revelatory. How is it that the scholarly consensus that Islam was a post-conquest creation of Arabs and that the Koran is actually a Nestorian liturgical book written in Syriac, not known in our universities? I tend to view you and other such as Elena Chudinova to be our Cassandras, issuing true prophecies that no one will believe.

Yet I spent ten days in Europe this summer with my sons. Europe was as I remember her from my youth when I had lived there for a year — steeped in a Christian past and lost in an epicurean present. We traveled through Catalonia, Languedoc, and Provence and the Islamic presence, from the perspective of someone who lives in Jersey City, to be almost negligible. On the last day, I was walking on Las Ramblas at 5:00 PM, reveling in my last few hours in this paradise and going over in my mind our visit. I thought perhaps Islam was not such a threat — that I should limit my exposure to Breitbart and Jihad Watch — and not be, as my newly minted Princeton politics grad says, such a hater. I saw a woman in a Burqa with a baby and pitied her for being so out of place. In the next moment, I saw the white van plowing through the crowd. I was ten yards from the Joan Miró mosaic where it came to rest. The dead and dying were all around me. I stayed and helped a grievously injured 16-year-old German girl who had been visiting with her parish. No priest came to give Last Rites to the dying or comfort the wounded and terrorized. But the Cardinal went to the hospital in the evening and said all religions are religions of peace. I wrote an open letter to the newspapers in Barcelona but no one bothered to call me back.

Here is Mr. Sexton’s open letter:

c/o La Vanguardia, elPeriodico, el PuntAvio

Cardinal Juan Jose Omella
Archbishop of Barcelona

Your Eminence:

Please accept this open letter to you and the Church in Barcelona.  I, myself, probably because of my sins, happened to be at the Rambla de Sant Josep  at the corner at Carrer de L’Hospital at the moment the van driven by young Islamic terrorists passed by coming to rest at the Juan Miro mosaic  last Thursday. I was unable to comprehend what was happening as the idyllic scene was replaced by a nightmare. The van with its human detritus sped by and a wave of terrified citizens and tourists overwhelmed. All around me was blood, and bodies and  people in torment and terror — babies, children, the old and the young.

The police and the security forces arrived almost instantaneously and were fierce and courageous and non-stinting as they sought to secure the area even while the perpetrators escaped back over their victims. Strangers offered aid to the wounded. Terrified children and babies were corralled into the adjacent stores. I saw one young guy jumping from body to body — giving CPR here,  making a tourniquet there. (I have read that Lucas Digne, the fullback for Barça, had run from the safety of his luxury  apartment with water and towels, and I believe that he is the guy I saw). At last, the ambulances began to arrive with medics, one by one. They addressed those in extremis first while those who were conscious had to wait. In the 45 minutes I was at the scene, several persons there on the pavement were pronounced dead as resuscitation efforts by just regular people were abandoned when the medics said there was no hope.

Yet one thing was conspicuously absent: not a single priest appeared in my sight to give Extreme Unction to the dying, to comfort those in agony, to give witness to those in shock that Christ is with us — that he has overcome the world and that we must be willing to undergo any and every trial for the sake of the kingdom. Even if he did nothing, a priest in his cassock would have born witness. Maybe a priest was there and I missed him in his jeans or shorts, and if so, then I apologize for my accusation. But the dead I saw had no minister of God to assist them. To me, this is inexplicable. There were four churches within a stone’s  throw — including the Basilica of St. Maria, the parish of St. Augustin, the parish of St. Philip Neri, and your very own Cathedral. If any of the deaths on the Rambla of Sant Josep were happy, it is no thanks to the Church.

I was in Barcelona with my sons for a  holiday and  I wanted more than anything for them to experience the glories of a civilization built on Christ and his love — but also his judgment. My mantra was the line from Hilaire Belloc, that “the Faith is Europe and Europe is the Faith.” In this vein, we marveled at Sagrada Familia and even more of the fanatical faith of Gaudi, which seems to embarrass or at least befuddle his current admirers. We made a pilgrimage to Monteserrat and ardently kissed the orb which the Black Madonna holds in her extended right hand — the world redeemed by Christ whom she had borne without corruption. We venerated the sarcophagus and the relics of the Virgin Martyr St. Eulalia in your own Cathedral.

Yet you said, after visiting the injured in the Hospital del Mar only hours after the attack, that  “God is the God of life and love in all religions….”

This is false, Your Eminence! There is only one true religion and, if you, a Prince of the Church cannot say that it is the Catholic and orthodox faith that comes to us from the apostles, who can? Moreover, it is demonstrably not true that the Allah of  Islam engenders life and love. Having read your comments yesterday and being familiar with Pope Francis’ denial of these truths, I was not surprised to read this morning that “at least 10,000 Catalans with links to the separatist movement have actually converted to Islam in recent years [and that] [i]t is believed that two out of every ten Catalan radicals who belong to the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), a far-left political party, are converts to Islam. The ERC, which now governs Catalonia, has  vehemently refused to sign a cooperation agreement with the central government in Madrid to fight jihadist terrorism.”[1] How anomalous is this that a movement that seeks to preserve and cultivate Catalonian culture morphs into the modern-day descendant of its ancient foe? Something happens to radical movements. The IRA in the 1960s, one recalls, became hardline Marxist-Leninists trained and armed by the Soviets.

Barcelona does not need minutes of silence or shouts of  “we are not afraid.” She and all of us need shepherds with testicular fortitude and faith to lead men to embrace with all of their hearts and all their minds the salvation which is from Christ alone and none other. No political movement or primitive cult of violence can compete with such a vision.

Sant Jordi pray to God to send us shepherds who will teach the truth! Santa Eulalia pray to God for us that we may not fail at the time of trial! La Morenata pray to God for us who mourn and weep!

My first thought from this interesting post. How demented, shortsighted and pathetic it is, that some Catalans see Islam as an ally in their fight for independence.

I hesitate to make a comment here. I am almost weeping at what I have read. The horror of what I have read has me speechless.
Were the clergy afraid their end would be like the priest in France? He died knowing the true source of the attack. Doesn’t their faith experientially enfold them in situations like this? The Christians in Islamic countries suffer worse than this daily.
Surely the absence of the priests/clergy was planned? They couldn’t all have been unavailable could they?
Is it part of a deeper plan to remove Christianity from Spain because Islam still believes Spain to be an Islamic country having previously conquered it? Is the RC church colluding with Islam?
The Pope has spoken about Islam having the same god as Christianity but when a comparison of their characters proves they don’t have the same God.
Why oh why is the Pope and his Cardinals deceiving so many? What is in it for them?
What do they think will happen at the judgment? Are they so deceived they are unable to perceive the stance they are taking?
Mercifully the general public assisted these sorely injured people, but it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth that Christians who at the very least could have brought blankets and towels were so conspicuous by their absence.
Someone much greater than I said these words, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
    Lord, have mercy on us.

It was PRIESTS who were conspicuous by absence. At least that was what the letter stated. They neede Teresa there to give them no pain medications as they died.
As soon as the Jews are gone, perhaps the church will get back to fighting Islam. What do you think? As all religions are peacefull. The Pope SAID so!! As did this cardinal!! Bow down to the vicur of chhrist on earth, your leader. Voted in by all the other peds. At least the Boston ped. Boston ped; Boston ped; everyone knows Boston ped. (sing to tune of Clevland Rocks).

There are those that say Francis is not the true Pope.

Also…. many Popes have expressed interest in bringing in new converts. I suspect that Francis sees Islam as a way to power. If Francis could bring one billion Muslims to the Catholic church, that would make him a very powerful and influential man.

At this point, potentially assimilating Islam means overlooking the fact that they are a murderous death cult.

Message for Cardinal Omella: – Caliph of All Islam, Abu Bakr al Baghdadi said, “Islam was NEVER A RELIGION OF PEACE. Islam is the RELIGION OF FIGHTING*.”

As quoted in “Islamic State releases ‘al-Baghdadi message’”, BBC (14 May 2015) (*Arabic “q-t-l” = fight to the death)

Cardinal Juan Jose Omella is CULPABLY NEGLIGENT in learning the JIHAD DOCTRINE. The history of Islamic Spain is book of object lesson about JIHAD, CORROSIVE SHARIA LAW and DHIMMITUDE.

By the end of the MYTHOLOGICAL paradise of Islamic-occupied Spain, there were no churches in southern Spain and practically no Christians. The churches had been cannibalized for building materials to build mosques, the Christians had been enslaved, slaughtered or persecuted to death or expelled in the thousands to north Africa to even worse conditions.

Andalusian Spain was a nightmare for Spanish Christians and Jews.

Add to the message for Cardinal Omella that Abu Bakr al Baghdadi (Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim al-Badri (إبراهيم عواد إبراهيم البدري) is one of the world’s leading scholars of Islam with degrees in Islamic studies of the Qu’ran and sharia from Baghdad University including a PhD.

Point out that Abu’s knowledge of Islam is considerably greater than the Cardinal’s or the Pope’s (sarc. off).

That cardinal who came out with is outrageously false statement exposes that he has a case of religious denial.. In other words he had is religious blinders on. Could it be ,maybe, that he is in this mental state of denial about the violent and deadly essence of Islam because his “Boss” pope Francis is so pro Islamic ? Nevertheless many Muslims do their very best ,by the violent action to prove that Islam is extremely violent.. Likewise ,the Quran instructs in much ruthless and deadly violence [5:33. 9:5,111,123. 47:4] .That is very string religious instruction for “a peaceful religion.”

Agree with Walter. Cardinal Omella is brown-nosing to Pope Frank.

If Islam is a religion of peace then why is it the only one that consistently produces religiously-motivated terrorist attacks each and every day of the year?

If Islam is a religion of peace then why were there 32,000 deadly terror attacks committed explicitly in the name of Islam in the last 16 years?

If Islam is a religion of peace then why did Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, have people killed for insulting him or for criticizing his religion?

If Islam is a religion of peace then why are Muslims are told to emulate the example of Muhammad who committed a violent act every six weeks in the last nine years of his life?

If Islam is a religion of peace then why did Mohammed say he was “ordered by Allah to fight men until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is his messenger”??

What a riveting and tragic account by Mr. Sexton.

I see from his biography on Wikipedia that Omella was appointed to his current post by Francis. No doubt he was carefully vetted by the Curia to ensure that his views on mohammedans do not deviate from the current received orthodoxy. Sadly, fifth columnists like Omella and many others will remain in place long after the current Pope has gone on to his reward.

It’s funny that most people fail to see the link between Catalonia separatism and Islam. The day of the independence referendum most people commenting on Breitbart supported Catalonia independence. They have no clue.

I think it is quite possible that if Catalonia separates from Spain it will become an islamic state. In recent years Catalonia goverment has allowed unbounded immigration from north Africa countries and Gulf countries, specially Qatar, are pouring money in that region.

Mohammedens in Catalan does not surprise. Some 40 years ago in my town, Mohammedens attached themselves to whatever the social justice issue of the time was. But their intention was to make allies to their own cause, which was other. I remember saying to one, “I don’t believe that.” And the response: that’s ok. We work together for a while then go our separate ways.”
I was a naive college student then and not yet a believer. Even so, the thinking gave me the creeps and I distanced myself.

I treasure the friendship of many Catholic people. In Spain, following this scene of terror and death, I would find the presence of priests and the pronouncements of lying, ignorant cardinals, to be ironic and hypocritical. At this time, assuming I understand correctly, the Pope is infallible. His pronouncements are perfect and the very word of God. Where do I read alarmingly similar statements about another arguable “religion” that could also be argued to be a criminal conspiracy? To stay a part of either group is to be part and parcel of agreeing, following, practicing and spreading its teaching. One is either in or out; but never halfway. Both consider any attempt to reform from the “masses” as violating the authority of the “leadership”, and possibly to both for not following accepted official doctrine, apostasy. There is a problem with both that is not being noticed. Why?

    Dear Mr. Sexton,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It is indeed shocking to live through such a terrible attack on innocents. I also thank you for sending that letter that will unfortunately not get published, unless someone with a conscious runs that news operation.

To all the rest, I would recommend that we not get into the Protestant-RCC-Orthodox arguments. Unlike Islam, we learned the hard way that killing each other in the names of Jesus, Joseph, Mary, the Saints, Apostles, and the Holy Spirit is not Christ-like. Let the scholars argue and let the rest of us choose freely what to believe.
At its heart the essence of Christianity is that Christ died for us, and through Him we are saved. The rest is icing on the cake. Compare that to Islam: The only way to guarantee salvation is to die during a war to force others to believe the same thing you do. Sorry for the sermon, but it makes no sense for us fight over who’s Jesus is better.

Lastly, compare the lack of clergy at the Barcelona massacre with the clergy in WWII. Read about the four chaplains that went down with the ship while saving others. All chaplains volunteered to go into harm’s way. What a difference.

I am not sure what you mean by this. Did you mean the Jews that tried to escape on the MS St. Louis only to be turned away by the countries that should have sheltered them? From what I have read, the so called leaders of the German Jewish communities told the “flock” to basically be quiet, do what Mr. Hitler says, and we will be OK.

Meanwhile, the Brits did everything they could to keep Jews from getting into “Palestine” due to the agitation of the Muslims. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was a vicious hater of the Jews and worked with Hitler during WWII. He helped to organize a Muslim SS unit in what was left of Yugoslavia.

Is this what you had in mind?

        • Frank Anderson says

          Oct 9, 2017 at 1:12 am

Rob and Guy, please allow me to interject: It has been a burdensome thought for me most of my life that about half of Germany’s Jews listened, read and witnessed Hitler’s hatred of Jews and did what they could to get away. The other half ignored all the warnings that started with the very first speech Hitler gave, ca. 1920, denouncing Jews. I cannot reconcile how such educated and thoughtful people refused to see what was clearly before them. It seems to me, true to Jorge Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the lessons of the past are condemned to repeat them.” Essay on the Life of Reason (1905), we are repeating the lessons of history today with the muslim invasion. I suggest with the greatest compassion and sympathy that the first deniers of the Holocaust were the Jews who refused to listen, many of whom paid with their lives. Must we, Jews and Christians alike, do this again?

    The Orwellian lies never end!
Many religions are NOT peaceful and islam is the prime example of this!

Do not trust in these rituals to save you, don’t wait until you think you have 5 minutes left for some ‘last rites,’ even if that could help, you may not have those last 5 minutes.
    Turn to Jesus today!
You just come in prayer, ask for forgiveness of your sins from Him, because He died on the cross and rose again for YOU and your sins, repent and turn your life over to Him. You will be born again at that time unto newness of life in Jesus. That is what the Bible teaches. You must come to Jesus. Not to ‘the church,’ not to Mary, not to a priest, or a ‘saint,’ or an ‘angel,’ but only to Jesus.

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never turn away.” John 6; 37
If you come to Him, He won’t turn you away!
    He is our only Mediator:
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…”
    1 Timothy 2; 5
    Don’t put it off!

It is amazing that so many who have a hatred for the Church use every website to attempt to destroy the Church. This discussion has degenerated into a Catholic Church bashing discussion – and done by people who can hardly formulate a coherent sentence.
Regarding Pope Francis and Islam. I am no admirer of his at all. He certainly causes mush confusion. But I do see him as a genuinely compassionate man who wishes to be nice to all – and believes that ultimately all will see the way to goodness and truth in the world – and pursue it. It is a naive way of looking at the world – and a fatal flaw in a leader. Francis lets his heart rule his head in almost every circumstance. But that is a common fault among most intellectuals in the world today. We have entered a post-rationalist age where ‘nice’ has surplanted ‘truth’.
Regarding the Pope and Islam. Pope Francis and many Church leaders really believe that by keeing opportunitues open for dialogue that eventually reason prevails. And so they say things like “Islam is a religion of peace…” But they know for sure that this is not the case. Indeed, just one view across the canvas of history show that Islam is supremacist and totalitarian – and has always been a blight on the world.
I remember a long discussion with a Papal Nuncio in Nigeria and he acknowledging the true face of Islam but insisted that there is no hope at all if the rational world closes itself off to the irrationality of Islam. I have presented a copy of Robert Reilly’s “The Closing of the Muslim Mind” to a number of highly placed Catholic Churchmen. Their eyes were open to Reilly’s persuasive arguments that Islam is irrational – and the Taliban mindset in Islam will never allow it to be influenced by reason. We saw across the Muslim world just what happens as when Pope Benedict, at Regensburg, challenged Islam to acknowledge that God cannot do or tolerate irrational things.
To conclude, I beg Catholics to relent from these personal attacks on Pope Francis. Popes come and go bringing whatever baggage they carry. Within a generation, except for a few, they are no longer of consequence. Remember Infalliability is guaranteed only when a Pope makes a declaration regarding faith and morals. There is no infallability given to Francis when he believes that Arsenal de Sarandí is the best team in Argentina or when he believes that Islam is a religion of peace.

Islam (not “radical Islam”) at its creedal, foundational and self-defining level is hostile to the Trinity, hostile to the atonement, hostile to the incarnation and deity of Christ, hostile to the New Testament, hostile to the authority of the Apostles, hostile to the Cross both as a reality and a symbol. Islam is authoritarian, polygamous, pedophilic, cleptocratic, hair-triggered, subversive, supremacist, intolerant, obsessed with sex and elevating sexual perversion to something holy or virtuous, violent, and belligerent. Islam is hostile to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Anything less than this, which is the truth about Islam, is intolerable.

No wee beasty priesty after attack, or during?? Must be having DUCK with the movie. Or maybey they ordered Chinese takeout food for the movie? Sum Yung guy is a favourite of priests world wide. Along with tide up voy. And voy do they like it! And sweet and sour. Not sour dough either. Wait…. I stand corrected, there was, and is a lot of hush money being pain in lawsuits world wide. Unfortunately most individuals, for their basic education, attend high school in public institutions. The basic goal of these institutions is to remove the ability of their students to think critically. I must laud the public school system for pretty much achieving their goal. This is all evidenced by the low scores in the tests among the other world societies.

People today only spout mantras to try to advance their agenda. Most people are agenda driven not fact driven. So called Institutions of higher learning are in essence closed societies. You don’t challenge the prevailing mentality. They distort to achieve their goals e.g. Remember the mantra “Global Warming” and how it changed to “Climate Change” when the facts didn’t the fit the the mantra.

Look at the claims about anything and compare it with the facts. For example, adherents of Mohammad have slaughtering, robbing and raping since it’s beginning. Just check it out on the Internet. How many people know of the Battle of Lepanto or Charles Martel, the hammer of the Franks?

“Repeat a lie often and it becomes the truth.” – Lenin

A couple of examples of this:

“Islam is a religion of peace.”

    “Guns control saves lives.”

    A couple of Einstein quotes:

“The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits.”

“Only two things are infinite the universe and human stupidity and I’m not sure about the universe.”

      Excellent point, m4truth4all.

May I add that the goal of the “left” is to get the child as early as possible, when their minds are pliable, like soft putty, then they can be shaped and molded, more accurately, indoctrinated, on what to think vs how to think critically.

“The battle for mankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom. The classroom must and will become the arena of conflict between…the rotting corpse of Christianity and the new faith of humanism.”
      – John Dewey (1859-1952)

And so, this idea was further promoted by Obama. In his State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress to expand access to high-quality preschool to every child in America. As part of that effort, the President will propose a series of new investments that will establish a continuum of high-quality early learning for a child – beginning at birth and continuing to age 5. By doing so, the President would invest critical resources where we know the return on our dollar is the highest: in our youngest children.

      – Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

The Blessed Mother has warned us that the smoke of Satan has infiltrated the Vatican….Considering the truth that Allah is Satan and Muslims are Satan’s army, we, Catholics are getting bombarded from all sides.

Spain should look at its history and do what Queen Isabella did when she EVICTED AND BANNED THE MUSLIMS from Spain…..The rest of the civilized world should do the very same thing.

ISOLATION IS THE ONLY WAY TO DEAL WITH SATAN AND HIS ARMY..send them all back to Saudi Arabia for Financing them and to Yemen for Training them and ban them from migrating or entering a civilized country.. Then, we in the USA should drill for our own oil and tell the Saudi’s to take a hike…..The Saudi’s can take care of their wayward children….We in the meantime can pray for the conversion of Muslims but let go and let God find them in the desert tents and caves. Even God uses ISOLATION and it is called hell!
