Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Robert Spencer in PJ Media: Three Converts, Three Religions: George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Cat Stevens

Oct 16, 2017 6:17 pm By Robert Spencer

The conversions, once again, proved secular Leftist dogma about religion to be false. My latest in PJ Media:

The imminent release of “Trouble No More” — the latest installment of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series; this one covers his controversial 1979-81 “Christian period” — recalls the long-gone age of high-profile rock star conversions.

Dylan became a Christian, George Harrison dived into Krishna consciousness, and Cat Stevens embraced Islam, and each demonstrated, yet again, that Leftist dogma is false. The content of one’s religious beliefs does matter, and influences those who take their religions seriously.

Both Harrison and Dylan were widely criticized for their sanctimony. Reviewing Harrison’s 1973 album “Living in the Material World” in New Musical Express, Tony Tyler called the record “so damn holy I could scream.” In their book The Beatles: An Illustrated Record, Tyler and his co-author Roy Carr say of Harrison:

[I]t’s difficult to see why he travelled all the way to India to import a God who, by the sound of him (“The Lord Loves the One [That] Loves the Lord”) is as intractable and selfish as the petulant Jehovah of Victorian Sunday schools.

Reviewing Harrison’s “Extra Texture” album in Rolling Stone in 1975, Dave Marsh criticized the album’s “vague cant and astral pomposity,” and concluded:

Finally, we are faced with the fact that Harrison’s records are nothing so much as boring. They drone, and while chants and mantras may be paths to glory in other realms, in pop music they are only routes to tedium.

Harrison’s first wife Pattie may have agreed: she cited as one of the reasons for the breakup of their marriage his “obsessiveness” with his devotional practices.

Born-again Bob Dylan was similarly received. Performing in San Francisco on November 1, 1979, his first concert after his conversion, Dylan played only his new, Christian-themed songs. Reviewing the concert for Rolling Stone, Robert Palmer opined that “the unrelenting sermonizing grew tedious.” Reviewing Dylan’s 1980 album “Saved” for Rolling Stone, Kurt Loder called him “a perfect caricature of a Bible-thumping convert.”

The following year, reviewing Dylan’s subsequent album, “Shot of Love,” also for Rolling Stone, Paul Nelson quoted a lyric from one of the songs, “Trouble”:

“Nightclubs of the brokenhearted / Stadiums of the damned,” Dylan intones, and you wonder if these places could possibly be any worse than being trapped in a room with this record.

After Cat Stevens converted to Islam and started calling himself Yusuf Islam, there were no scathing reviews from Rolling Stone, because there was no music. Stevens/Islam quit the music business, as Islam forbids music except for nasheeds, songs praising Allah that are usually performed a cappella.

Islamic tradition records:

[T]he Prophet said that Allah commanded him to destroy all the musical instruments, idols, crosses and all the trappings of ignorance. (Hadith Qudsi 19:5)

Muhammad is also depicted as saying:

Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of ignorance. ( Reliance of the Traveller r40.0).

Islamic apologists in the West like to claim that only “Islamophobes” think Islam forbids music, but Cat Stevens certainly believed it did. Nothing was heard from him for decades. Then he began to resurface. Now he is a respected and venerated elder star, calling himself “Yusuf” without the “Islam” and singing pop music again. But as recently as 2010, there was published on YouTube a nasheed in which the author of “Peace Train” sang:

I’m praying to Allah to give us victory over the kuffar (unbelievers).

This bellicose prayer was in line with Yusuf Islam’s earlier post-conversion behavior. In 1989, he enthusiastically endorsed the Ayatollah Khomeini’s death fatwa against Salman Rushdie for insulting Islam. In a BBC panel discussion, he said that, rather than burning Rushdie in effigy:

I would have hoped that it’d be the real thing.

He further explained that if he were in an Islamic state and was ordered by the relevant authority to kill Rushdie, he would do so.

In 2004, Yusuf Islam was barred from entering the United States because of suspicions that he had been financing jihad terrorism. He acknowledged that some of his money may have gone to jihadis, but he claimed to have given money to them unwittingly.

Yusuf Islam has worked hard to soften his image, as George Harrison and Bob Dylan also did after the enthusiasm of their conversions wore off. But Harrison and Dylan had only to fight against perceptions that they were preachy and self-righteous. The former Cat Stevens had to try to demonstrate he was not a supporter of jihad terrorism and mass murder.

After their conversions, George Harrison and Bob Dylan became, at least in the eyes of some, annoying; Cat Stevens, by contrast, became dangerous. Harrison and Dylan never called for or approved of violence against anyone. Yusuf Islam did.

This is because of the content of the religions they each embraced.

Cat Stevens took up a religion that exhorted him to “kill them wherever you find them” (Qur’an 2:191, 4:89, 9:5) and “strike the necks” of the unbelievers (47:4). Given that the Islamic religion mandates death for blasphemers, it is not in the least surprising that Yusuf Islam endorsed the death fatwa against Salman Rushdie. Yusuf Islam became an endorser of brutality and murder because his new religion endorsed brutality and murder.

The Leftist media darling and renowned pseudo-intellectual “scholar of religions” Reza Aslan has claimed that religions are entirely what their followers make of them…

You know I have always wondered what if The Beatles at the height of there popularity in the mid-1960;s would have said to the youth and all people around the world that they are proud of there Judeo-Christian faith and accepted Jesus Christ as savior of the world and hope all people around the globe also accept Jesus Christ and his gospel of love and peace.

Do you think the world would be a different place now?

      Oct 16, 2017 at 7:27 pm

I doubt that the Beatles would have achieved the same popularity. Their “gospel” was sex, drugs and rock and roll. That’s what appealed to the youth of the day. Not much has changed except drug taking is more prevalent and sexual promiscuity hardly raises an eyebrow now. Oh, and the lyrics of modern songs are often much more suggestive. Cliff Richards, Pat Boone, Charlton Heston and many many others are/were Christians. Did they make a huge impact? I don’t see it.

        Oct 16, 2017 at 8:10 pm

To be fair, the spiritual search (even when naive or misguided) was as defining a part of that era as the sex drugs and rock and roll. As were the radical politics (or rejection of politics). The Beatles had a huge impact because they were great artists (together, not separately) in addition to being popular artists.

Pat Boone was a lot more popular than he had any right to be.

Also re: George. The same Hari Krishna pervaded his first post-Beatles record “All Things Must Past” which was a mega-hit (“My Sweet Lord”) and a critical favorite. Because the music was very good. The same could not be said about his subsequent records. In Dylan’s case it was almost entirely an antipathy towards Christians and Christianity and the personal feeling of being betrayed by their hero. I remember a local rock writer who just worshipped Dylan, always went on and on about his records, his concerts (the last one being the Alimony Tour). Dylan puts out “Slow Train” and does these “gospel” shows and the guy would never speak his name again. He turned to Bruce Springsteen and worshipped him. Typical rock critic.

          Oct 16, 2017 at 11:49 pm

The Beatles were not particularly about sex, and only one phase was druggish. McCartney was faithfully married to Linda Eastman for many years, until she died. Lennon was devoted to Yoko. George was devoted to his wife (but did he have more than one? I don’t recall.). Ringo I don’t know about.

I agree with Jack Diamond — the Beatles were great artists together — not separately. I’m not sure why, but to me Beatles recordings generally don’t wear out the way other tunes do. Nor do they get stuck in my head in one of those endless loops that can go on annoyingly for days with other pop songs.

How absurd, Valkyrie. First, there’s no such thing as a “radical Christian.” Second, Mark David Chapman was a murderer. Christianity has nothing to do with it. Jesus never says to harm or kill anyone. Only Islam says that (Jihad). So, just can it with your “radical Christian” BS.

Also, Lennon moved to NY because he loved the city. There’s no “reward.” He lived there and a psychopath murdered him. New York has nothing to do with it. What are you, a Muslim or an atheist? Definitely a leftist.

By 1966 the age of innocence was over, It was like a “Pandora’s box”
had been opened. The youth and to some degree the “older generation” of that time were very much captivated by The Beatles. I know, I lived thru it and my parents even liked the Beatles in the early years.

I do think The Beatles has had a big influence in shaping our society and culture which has come down to our day and age of more then 50 years of liberalism.

But the forces that shaped the ’60s and what followed much predate the Beatles. The ’60s did not happen as they did purely because of the Beatles.

As for their specific influence, George Harrison converted to Hinduism. This did certainly influence some fans–but the number of Westerners who converted to Hinduism were fairly small, and even fewer have remained Hindu.

Dylan and Harrison converted to peace. Stevens converted to Submission and was thus forced to change his name, not to keep anonymity, but to indicate his submission to a total life belief system that makes others submit, or else. A mediocre artist moved to an abominable way of life. And he’s never been called out for it. Dylan and Harrison took a fair amount of guff for their moves, but silence on Stevens. I wonder why.

Yep, that’s pretty much it. John Quincy Adams, way back in 1829, understood what Islam was about: he stated, flatly, that the essence of its teaching was to “exalt the brutal over the spiritual part of man’s nature”.

Islam *sacralises* murder, theft, rape (and adultery; if a kuffar married woman is seized in the course of jihad, and raped, the Muslim who rapes her is not, according to the sharia, committing adultery, because… *Infidel* married vows are of no significance whatsoever, the woman’s marriage vows are deemed to have been annulled the moment the mohammedan raider grabbed her and dragged her away), false witness (indeed, it encourages lying and deceit and outright BS of every kind), and unbridled greed/ covetousness.

      Allan Mandrowski,
Islam panders to mankind’s base instincts of dominance, sex, pillage, enslavement, and murder. Islam allows a person to commit all sorts of evil while at the same time claiming to be pious. Blaise Pascal stated that “men never do evil so thoroughly and joyfully as when they do it for religious conviction”, and that fits Islam to a tee.

Three very useful cases for a ‘compare and contrast’.
We need to rehabilitate ‘discrimination’, in the sense of ‘making distinctions between things’. Comparing and contrasting – making distinctions – are part and parcel of thinking, of sifting and sorting through things and ideas; in this particular case religious traditions. Prejudice is a bad thing but discrimination is a good thing, and when the New Left began to confuse the two terms and make them interchangeable, they were on their way to making empty and banal judgements of the world.

It was long before that, in one of the books (maybe Albert Goldman, can’t recall) Lennon watches a lot of televangelists on TV and finds the Lord, for about a week. If there is another story later, I didn’t hear it, his reaction to Dylan’s conversion was pretty acidic. John was prone to many short-term enthusiasms– Maharishi, primal therapy, radical politics. Primal therapy inspired a fine album. Politics almost ruined his songwriting.

I’m not sure politics ruined his song-writing — basically, leaving the Lennon-McCartney team killed, or at any rate greatly weakened, the song-writing of both. But Lennon’s politics were never fanatical, to my knowledge. For example, “If you want money for people with minds that hate, all I can tell you is buddy you have to wait”,

        and,

“You say you’ll change the constitution
        Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
        Well, you know
You’d better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao,
you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow.”

Islam leads into the next era of dark ages, worse than any other if carried out.

I also get tired of people hating on “Jehovah” in the OT, there is a reason for everything that is in the OT, and a good one, but man thinks he is wiser than God.

Of course true converts to Jesus will be persecuted, He even forewarned us of this all the time. It just goes with the territory, one of the crosses we have to bear and I am honored to do so.

I always get such a kick out of reading the persecution stories of Christians in those parts of the world like the middle east, they know what is asked of them and they have the muster, bravery, and courage (and another term I will avoid at this time) to do it! Contrast that to the sissies here in the West and it puts most professing Christians to shame (“what? I’m supposed to endure suffering for Jesus?!?” gasp!)

Then there is the ‘wisdom’ of the world versus the wisdom of God:

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 1 Corinthians 1; 18-19

As for music…the best experience for the soul (after the baptism of the Holy Spirit) is to lose yourself in true worship music, it has a beauty that transcends this world and existence if you are truly worshipping the Lord (who is more holy and lovely than anything one can describe). It is like a little taste of the kingdom of heaven with heavenly choirs. You just don’t know what you’re missing!

The gist of the article delineates the widening chasm between Liberal advocates of appropriate commentaries and those of non-Liberals. The fact that the arts is a competing channel of commentary means that its orators or commentators are singled out for their inert remarks. Juxtaposed to the confrontational and aggressive nature of Islamism it is deemed that Christianity and Hinduism are the cause of trouble notwithstanding that the fact that Muslims control the warfare conflagrating the world . Islam destabilizes India to this day in in the Kashmiri region; they already wrestled Bangladesh and Pakistan from the Hindus. The Liberals vigor is applied to dethrone Christian ethics and morals and fixing their agendas, hence the reason that Islam is its proxy authority. Islam’s bellicosity is aggrandizement of something Liberals salivate

Yusuf islam found allah alright but apparently couldn’t find God.
It’s too difficult for the convert to islam to reach that level.

It requires effort to find God but it is pretty easy to find allah.

One wonders does allah’s curse on those who listen to singers apply to songsters as well as songstresses?

“On the day of resurrection allah will pour molten lead into the ears of whoever sits listening to a songstress”
Reliance of the Traveller,Umdat al salik section r40.1.

Those who listen to a woman singer might have to be punished by the misogynistic, chauvinist allah.
But listening to a man is probably Ok.

Listening to a Jewish woman praising the God of Israel whilst singing in Hebrew:I think we can safely say that allah would be furious at that.

Idol Winner Mohammed Assaf from Gaza would agree. The Rebel was outside one of his concerts in London Ontario, and most people either supported his views on women not being allowed to sing, or wouldn;t believe he had said it in the first place….

Cat Stevens has gone back and forth on whether his music is allowed under Islam. Of course, the most pious Muslims consider it Haram.

I never heard of Cat Stevens actually stating that he wished for the mass murder of all Christians.
Many Muslims are law abiding, honest, giving and generous people.
To paint them or anyone with a deleterious Broad Brush is terribly wrong.
That’s like believing and erroneously stating that all Christians believe in following everything in the old Testament and would therefore agree with the idea of stoning people to death.

    • JawsV says

      Oct 17, 2017 at 2:19 pm

That is so dumb, “Sov Mary.” Muslims are mass-murderers who have been mass-murdering Jews and Christians in the 21st century since 9/11. Islam has Jihad — Islamic holy war against non-Muslims (Jews and Christians). Yes, Stevens agreed with the fatwa against Rushdie. That’s common knowledge.

Your “Christians” “comparison” is equally as dumb. Christianity doesn’t call for the killing of anyone. The OT is Judaism. It doesn’t either. As for stoning, Jesus stopped stoning. Muslims still stone people today. Did you know that? Repeat: Muslims stone people, mostly women, TODAY. So, just can it with your BS, Muslim.

Yusuf Islam is a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the slogan of the MB is: “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. The Qur’an is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope. Allahu akbar!”

His charity, Muslim Aid (and its cousin Small Kindness) is part of the Union of Good coalition of charities headed by the Muslim Brotherhood’s “spiritual leader” the despicable Youssef Qaradawi. Muslim Aid and the Union of Good are fundraisers for Hamas, a designated terrorist organization which calls itself the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine. Yusuf Islam even recruited for Hamas in the 80s. Muslim Aid was linked to support of jihadis, including al Qaeda, in places like Bosnia, Bangladesh, Somalia and Sudan. Yusuf Islam’s good friend Abdul Malik Muhajid, ran a front to finance Hamas and his group aiding Bosnian mujahideen was tied to the Benevolence International Foundation, a fund raising front for Al Qaeda, if you remember your 9/11 investigation.

Yusuf Islam therefore has blood (the blood of infidels) on his hands. He also endorsed the murder of Salman Rushdie for blasphemy. This is Islamic law, of course, and he is a pious Muslim. A pious Muslim believes in every word of the Qur’an and in following the example of Muhammad in all things.
Your comparison of Islam with how Christians understand the Old Testament is quite in error. As ex-Muslim Ali Sina put it:

“All Muslims believe in the same book, every word of it. They just practice it to different extents. We call those who follow their faith to the letter radical and the wish-washy ones moderate. There is only one Islam: The Islam of Muhammad and the Quran. It is the only Islam that matters. The rest is a bunch of lies. This Islam is violent. It instructs the believer to lie to the unbelievers, to cast terror in their hearts and to murder them.”

The distinction in behavior has to do with whether the Muslims are weak and vulnerable to their enemies (and follow the example of Muhammad in Mecca, showing the face of peace) and if they are in sufficient numbers and power to impose Islam or wage open warfare to “remove the obstacles” to Islam (Muhammad in Medina, founding a State and launching jihad war against mankind). This is Islam, regardless of what individual Muslims do or don’t do (“honest, giving, generous”). “The duty of jihad exists as long as the universal domination of Islam has not been attained. Peace with non-Muslim nations is therefore a provisional state of affairs only.” Encyclopedia of Islam

There is no mistaking what is obligated of Muslims in the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Muslims are to have hate and enmity for Allah’s enemies, which are those who disbelieve. This is a Qur’anic doctrine known as Loyalty (to Muslims) and Enmity (to “filthy”disbelievers). Jews & Christians are especially hated,”the worst of creatures “(Qur’an 98:6) and to be friends or allies with them is both forbidden and cause for charges of apostasy (Qur’an 5:51). Understand that Islam means “submission” and Muslims are not given a choice. “It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and his Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision” (33:36).

That is why you can paint them with a broad brush.

And so the last “revelations” on warfare from Allah and the controlling ones till the Day of Judgment…
The Verse of the Sword (9:5) giving “idolators” the choice of convert to Islam or DIE; and verse 9:29 declares war (combat, qital) on people for their BELIEFS about Allah & Muhammad, fight to kill them if they do not convert to Islam, even the People of the Book–Jews & Christians. The latter are given a third option of agreeing to live as subjugated people under Islamic authority, pay a ransom for their lives, and continue as Jews & Christian inferiors, humiliated and feeling themselves “subdued.”

“Islam has approved war so that the word of God becomes supreme…this is war for the cause of God (Holy War). Muhammad therefore, sent his ambassadors to eight kings and princes in the neighborhood of the Arab peninsula to call them to embrace Islam. They rejected his call. Thus, it became incumbent on the Muslims to fight them.”
–Dr. Afifi Abdul-Fattah (“The Spirit of Islamic Religion” p 382).

‘The Book of the Islamic State’ (1953) by al-Nabhani:
“The foreign policy of the Islamic state must be to carry the Islamic mission to the world by way of Holy War. This process has been established through the course of the ages…this process has never been changed at all. The Apostle Muhammad from the time he founded the State in the city of Yathrib, prepared an army and began holy war to remove the physical barriers which hinder the spread of Islam….by holy war, kingdoms and states were removed and Islam ruled the nations & peoples. The glorious Qur’an has revealed to Muslims the reasons for fighting, to carry the message of Islam to the entire world.”

Most of the leadership of al Qaeda came originally from the Muslim Brotherhood.

“Osama is “in all certainty, a mujahid (heroic fighter), and I have no doubt in his sincerity in resisting the occupation, close to Allah on high.” —Former Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammed Mahdi Akef, Nov. 2007

Osama bin Laden once wrote something absolutely mainstream orthodox understanding by the Muslim ulema (Islamic scholarship). Ponder it and think again about what “Cat Stevens” wishes for Christians.

“There are only three choices in Islam: either willing submission, or payment of the jizya thereby physical, though not spiritual submission to the authority of Islam, or the sword–for it is not right to let him live (an infidel). The matter is summed up for every person alive; either submit, or live under the suzerainty of Islam, or die.” (Note–What does this have to do with any specific political grievances? This is permanent eternal religious war)

“Muslims and especially the learned among them, should spread Sharia law to the world, that and nothing else…(Muhammad:)”I have been commanded to battle mankind until they declare there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah…He also said, per Berida..”Call them to Islam, if they respond (convert) accept this… if they refuse to accept Islam, demand of them the jizya…if they refuse, seek the aid of Allah and fight them. Does Islam, or does it not, force people by the power of the sword to submit to its authority, corporeally if not spiritually? Yes.

“In fact, Muslims are obligated to raid the lands of the infidels, occupy them, and exchange their systems of governance for an Islamic system, barring any practice that contradicts the Shari’a from being publicly voiced among the people as was the case at the dawn of Islam…They say that our Shari’a does not impose our particular beliefs upon others, this is a false assumption. For it is, in fact, part of our religion to impose our particular beliefs upon others.”

“Offensive Jihad is an established and basic tenet of this religion. It is a religious duty rejected only by the most deluded. Divine foundations that are built upon hating the infidels, repudiating them with tongue and teeth till they embrace Islam or pay the jizya with willing submission and humility. The Prophet was “sent in the final hours with the sword so that none is worshipped but Allah alone, partnerless.”

—-“Moderate Islam is a Prostration to the West”
Osama bin Laden (tr. Raymond Ibrahim, The Al Qaeda Reader)

Now do you understand why Yusuf Islam’s hands are bloody?

; The song “You’re so Vain” is all about Cat Stevens, a man that Carly Simon was deeply involved with, and that is the actual reason why Carly Simon can’t admit who the subject of the song is because she knows that Cat Stevens/Joe Islam would sue her for millions-of-dollars, that would go to fund suicide bombers/Jihadists.
Activities that any decent person doesn’t want any part of.

The key line is “You gave away the things you love, and one of them was me”, i.e., upon conversion, the Muhammadan has to give away all wordily things, including loved ones, similar to Jesus’ message. Religions are vain, and demanding.

The song “Anticipation” was written by Carly Simon expressing her happiness in looking forward to her first date with Cat Stevens. Cat Stevens/Joe Islam is a stupid person, and a real man never would’ve given up on Carly Simon.

She’s said the verses are about different men (there have been so many). Warren Beatty owned a horse called “Naturally” he raced at Saratoga Springs and it won. At least one verse is about him.

Besides being with Cat Stevens she married James Taylor. She liked insipid, cloying songwriters.
