Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Swedish researcher claims Viking burial clothes bear the name “Allah” in Arabic

Oct 12, 2017 8:42 pm By Robert Spencer

How far will the academic Islamopandering go? Apparently there is no limit, no matter how ridiculous it gets. This latest outbreak is receiving adoring international publicity, and has been uncritically accepted, such that immediately the Vikings have all become Muslim, and all their exploits are to be attributed to Islam.

The big story here is that the name “Allah” in Kufic Arabic script has been found on tenth-century Viking burial clothes. Here is what is on the garment:

And here is “Allah” in square Kufic script:

Here is another square Kufic “Allah,” with the terminal ha rendered more like the Viking burial image:

So that’s that, right? As Jihad Watch reader David puts it, “So the Islamisation of Scandinavia is a natural, laudable, and above all inevitable process: the Nordic peoples are ‘coming home’ to their ancestral belief in the one, the only True Religion.”

Maybe, but not so fast. In the first place, the square Kufic “Allah” is essentially some straight lines and a square. The Viking burial clothes could have happened upon a similar design by sheer happenstance; the word is not intricate or unusual enough to rule that out. Also, here is the whole image published in the Daily Mail:

Note the swastika at the top of the image (interestingly enough, the BBC cut the swastika out of the image in their story on this). A foreshadowing of the Mufti of Jerusalem and the Nazi/Islamic collaboration of World War II? No. The swastika was an ancient Norse image for the sun. But it was not an Islamic image. So even if the burial clothes do say “Allah,” the Vikings were not Muslim, because if they had been, they wouldn’t be employing the symbols of jahiliyya, the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.

What’s more, look at the bottom of the image. Presumably the symbols there, next to the supposed “Allah,” are just a bit of ornamental design. But there are four crosses in that ornamental design. Just ornamental, or indicative of a Christian influence as well? Wouldn’t a Muslim be careful not to include crosses in the embroidery? If they really are Christian crosses, and there is no way that possibility can be dismissed out of hand, then this is yet more indication that even if the three-lines-a-hook-and-a-square symbol is “Allah” in Arabic, this is more likely to be the burial cloth of a syncretistic, superstitious Viking who wanted to placate all the deities, not of a Muslim.

But that possibility doesn’t fit the modern mania to see the hand of Islam everywhere, so it will not be considered.

Parting question: is the design on the famous Greek diner coffee cup a variant of the square Kufic “Allah”? Are Greek diner owners actually Muslims?

“Were Vikings influenced by ISLAM? Arabic embroidery bearing the name ‘Allah’ is uncovered on 10th Century Norse burial clothes,” by Tim Collins, Mailonline, October 12, 2017:

Burial costumes from Viking boat graves have provided more evidence of contact between Nordic tribes and ancient Islam.

A study of the garments, found in 9th and 10th century graves, has revealed the presence of Arabic script invoking Allah.

The presence of Islamic artefacts at Viking sites was once explained as evidence of looting and trade, but new finds continue to reveal closer links between the cultures.

Researchers believe the latest discovery points to similarities between the Viking and Muslim view of the afterlife….

‘In the Quran, it is written that the inhabitants of Paradise will wear garments of silk, which along with the text band’s inscriptions may explain the widespread occurrence of silk in Viking Age graves.

‘The findings are equally prevalent in both men’s and women’s graves.’

This is not the first time that a Viking artefact with links to Islam has been unearthed.

A ring, made over 1,000 years ago, confirmed contact between the Vikings and the ancient Muslim world.

Unearthed in Sweden in 2015, it bears an ancient Arabic inscription that reads ‘for Allah’ or ‘to Allah’.

Annika Larsson and her colleagues have received a positive response among the academic community.

Oh, I bet they have.

    • Jayell says

      Oct 13, 2017 at 12:51 am

Research in York (England), which was taken over by the Vikings during the Dark Ages, has suggested that their reputation for rape and pillage is an unfair exaggeration. They might have been a little (shall we say?) ‘forthright’ in their unexpected foreign expeditions, but present-day Millwall soccer supporters might have been able to teach them a thing or two in discourtesy. And the historical evidence from York suggests that they could be quite civil and constructive. Just like our Friends of Allah? Hardly!!!

      • Robert Crawford says

        Oct 13, 2017 at 11:33 am

York was conquered and ruled by Vikings for a while, so it is a bit unusual in that regard.

        • Roopak Vaidya says

York may have actually been founded by the Vikings as an early trading post.

      • gravenimage says

        Oct 13, 2017 at 5:11 pm

Actually, the Vikings *were* terrible in this regard. Rape and pillage were very much a part of Viking “culture”.

For instance, genetic research has shown that every single woman in Iceland has some English genetic heritage. This means that they are all descendants of English women who were abducted and raped.

Of course, this all ended almost a thousand years ago.

Would that we could say the same for Muslims.

    • Joe says

      Oct 13, 2017 at 7:59 am

The Vikings were more traders than raiders, but they did both. They had trading posts from Kiev to Ireland. Around the time of Christ, they stole a ship from Black Sea and made it all the way back to Viking Land with it. They got around. The point is that they were well aware of Islam, but they never converted to it. The people who write these articles pretend that no history exists from that period.

      • Robert Crawford says

        Oct 13, 2017 at 11:32 am

They both traded and raided, often on the same voyage. The trade goods came from the raids…

  9. Matthieu Baudin says

    Oct 12, 2017 at 9:38 pm

Amongst other attributes, the Vikings were slave owning, slave trading, raiders and plunderers with a blood lust that was reinforced by cultural religious beliefs. I used to marvel at how the Swedes were able to move away from their bloodied past and take the road of relative peace and social stability; but if some are now fantasising about violent cultural renewal via an identification with Islam then the Christian led civilisation of the past thousand years in the Northern Baltic may unravel leaving a marvel-less ruin.

    • gravenimage says

      Oct 13, 2017 at 5:18 pm

Yes–it was largely Vikings converting to Christianity that led to an end to their raping and pillaging.

      • Matthieu Baudin says

        Oct 13, 2017 at 11:03 pm

Yes, hi Graven – Christianity came to the Baltic region about a thousand years after Rome. Not only did conversion end the Viking ‘fighting religion’ it also pacified and humanised the communities of the eastern Baltic, something that the Poles recognise so strongly that they often insist that the birth of the Polish identity came with the very act of conversion.

I just read (Wikipedia) about the Greek key design featured on the edges of the coffee cup in the photo of this article. This Greek key or Greek fret design is the modern term for the ancient symbol of the Maeander River of Asia Minor, today’s Turkey, and is actually described as a labyrinth in linear form. And we all know that the lands of ancient Greece included Asia Minor, but back then there were city-states such as Sparta, Athens, Lesvos and Troy, among others. And none of this had anything to do with Islam, thank God, whether historians like it or not!

    • gravenimage says

  11. Rob Crawford says

    Oct 12, 2017 at 10:03 pm

Designs like that are usually described as “abstract animals”. Or just symmetric patterns the embroiderer found attractive.

    1) Lots of cultures bury people in their best — and the Vikings believed dead warriors spend their after-life feasting and fighting in Valhalla. They dressed them for a fine party and fighting. That would have included silks for those with the wealth to own it in the first place.

    2) In Rome there’s a pyramid, built as the tomb for a man who served with the army in Egypt. One of the stories about the pyramid is that the builder, one Caius Cestius, had specified a rich burial for himself, with silks and all manner of expensive decorations, but the Senate, upset over the amount of wealth Romans were burying with themselves, banned lavish burials. So the Romans apparently buried people with silks, to an amount the Senate felt it was wasteful — does that mean they, too, had Muslim attitudes about the afterlife, despite this happening centuries before Mohammed had his mental breakdown? Or was it just a way to show off your wealth?

    3) Of *COURSE* the Vikings had contact with the Muslim world. There was never any doubt of that — start with the Varangian guard, where Vikings looking for wealth or fame served as the Byzantine emperor’s guards. As Muslims rolled over the Byzantines, the Varangians would have dealt with Muslims. That 1,000 Muslim-made ring could have been loot from battle as easily as traded.

Plus, we know the Vikings traded slaves with the Muslims. The Vikings would raid Britain, Ireland, France, or even Russia, and exchange slaves and gold with Muslims in North Africa.

They *also* traded with Christians, and we *know* they weren’t Christians until the 11th or 12th centuries. For that matter, Vikings settling/invading Britain generally stayed pagan, *despite* the Christian influence of the local Anglo-Saxons who were culturally and linguistically their cousins. If they didn’t convert to the faith of their neighbors who could speak to them in their own tongue (OK, with a thick accent), why would the convert to a faith they ran into after long sea journeys, with whom they had not a single word in common?

Reading from left to right the word ‘Allah’ starts with an ‘A’ which, in Arabic script is a vertical line. It is differentiated from the letter ‘L’, also a vertical line, by not being connected to the following letter. In the image the first letter is connected to the next therefore it is not an ‘A’.

And I really don’t care if a piece of Islam cloth is found at a burial place, in any way it is no excuse to conquer Sweden, although Sweden blew it.
But today, when it is a sunny day I am going to look if I can find an Islam cloth here in the graveyard and may be we get included in the resourcefulness, that once Islam was here, and we have to go back to our source, and think about this, I all of a sudden remembered that in the hippy time, I wore long skirts and I might secretly have longed for my roots, which probably came from Islam too, after all that was half an “islam dress” and guess what, I sometimes were a scarf around my head when there was much wind,
oh,oh,oh, I am loosing my roots. You think I might be a muslim? Pls say no! (arc).
But then I realise I am just a Kaffur Islamophob who is not violent, but just liked her own country and the freedom of speech and does not want her country to be run over by violent ,conquering , and murderous people, no matter from what religion they are.

Does the Buddhist Swastika imply some association with Nazism?
Of course not. That ancient image was appropriated by the Nazis to represent an evil ideology: there is no connection with Buddhism.

Imagine if some “researcher” saw this swastika symbol on a temple in South East Asia and comes to the foolish conclusion that this must mean they are all Nazis.

How idiotic are these “researchers” to think that there is any similarity between islam and Viking beliefs?
Odin,Thor,Freya etc were pagan gods.If you found a sword in a grave of a Christian and a similar type of sword in a muslim grave does that mean they are somehow related/believe in the same god?
    Of course not.

This must part of the leftie liberal revisionist history school to promote the false idea that islam has roots in European culture making it easier to justify the islamic invasion of the Eu which is facilitated by the leftie liberal politicians who run the EU(and why Hungary,Poland etc should not trust them).

In 2008,a French medievalist academic Sylvain Gouguenheim, revealed that the texts of ancient Greece often said to have been saved by the Arab muslims were in fact preserved by….. Syriac Christians.
{see “The strange death of Europe” by Douglas Murray 2017}.

Major developments in Architecture,Technology,Engineering,Mathematics and Science came from the West;the islamic world loves to claim credit for what the Romans, the Greeks, etc invented and discovered.

      Good post, FYI.

Just one point: the Nazis did not appropriate a Buddhist symbol. Some version of the Swastika is found in many disparate parts of the world, and with many different meanings–it can be seen on Byzantine church mosaics and in Native American carvings.

The specific Swastika symbol the Nazis referenced was the Teutonic “Hammer of Thor”.

Don’t worry about muslim rape and pillage! It’s what your muslim Viking ancestors were up to, as well!

Everyone knows there were links between the Vikings and muslim parts of the world, just as there were between the Vikings and Britain, Ireland, France, Kiev and Constantinople. This reads like another Islamic land grab, along the lines of “Andalucia”. Now, the imams will be claiming that Leif Ericsson was a well-known muslim and that muslims got to America ahead of the detested colonialist, imperialist, militarist, slave-driving profiteer, Christopher Columbus.

It’s all part and parcel of the ridiculous attempts to claim all sorts of discoveries for islam which actually occurred in the West. Even the invention of powered flight is disputed by Islamic “scholars”, on the basis that somebody had a vague idea about it earlier, without finding any way of putting it into practice.

So here is how one would spell the word Allah, and it’s spelled the same way everywhere, for the same reason you’re not allowed to draw Mohamed.
    الله
The letter A in the beginning would NEVER grammatically connect to the letter L, and the letter h is backwards, and is therefore meaningless. Remember this is a language where the placement of a single dot above or below a character can change and entire letter into a completely different one.

This is the kind of B.S you might get from Muslim Heritage.com in an attempt to portray islam as a benevolent influence on our ancient forebears. I guess we’re supposed to see this ancient textile as evidence that muslims were cohabiting peacefully with Scandinavian peoples of long ago, and that we shouldn’t be concerned about the rapes and enclaves and terror of today. Swedes are only “coming home” to their ancestral religion, so we must welcome muslims in friendship! But as an average Joe I don’t care about what happened a 1000 years ago. What matters is right now, what we’re living today with islam, the murder, the terror, the raping, and the cultural annihilation. Muslims and Vikings fought, traded, and it’s possible some even converted to islam, who cares? I’m sick of these feeble attempts by the left to undermine our commonsense dedication to good morals and country. I put this pseudo archaeology on the level of Erich von Daniken’s Chariot of the Gods and is not to be taken seriously. There are tons of ancient artifacts that bear a remarkable resemblance to modern day astronauts or alien beings as they are commonly depicted. But no serious scholar or intelligent layperson truly believes these are anything more than artistic coincidences. That’s what this design is too, it’s an artistic coincidence that has been exploited by people trying to rewrite history for islam. But it doesn’t matter to me even if it is true. One misguided Viking could never distract me away from 9/11 and the terror and suffering of islam. Stick your bad history up your ass, we want peace and freedom not fallacious history that distorts the bloody truth. Your paltry relics do nothing to stop the hate and bigotry of islam’s murderous creed. Stop treating us like children.

This is all coincidental nonsense that is only composed of trivial curiosities…

You’re right, David. And these trivialities create a stark contrast with the hugely dark motives of those who are exploiting them to distort history for islam. It’s just one more sneak-a-roo by leftists to pull the wool over our eyes. They do this because they don’t respect us, they think we’re all idiots. They throw these historical baubles in front of us and we’re supposed to go, “Wow! so interesting, islam is an old friend of ours!” But we’re on to them, this is a multi-fronted war with islam, they’re attacking us in every area of life. Over the years I’ve gotten better at spotting the devilish tactics of the left. Like most of us I was super dumb about the “religion of peace” in 2001. But now I can spot islam’s bigoted filth whenever it rears its ugly head, it’s a cancer of bad ideas corrupting people who should be protecting us from islam, not encouraging it. We’ve got our own historical evidence too, the bloody remains of the tortured and murdered for islam, and an abundance of historical writings of islamic atrocities that no reputable scholar would refute, and the rape epidemic by rapacious muslim men, the nasty enclaves, the riots and terror, the lawsuits… Somehow I’m not too impressed by that accidental lettering on some ancient textile. In fact I’m rather insulted they think I should care. I don’t feel any more consoled about islam because of this burial cloth than I do about Hitler when someone tells me he may have been a Christian. It’s a meaningless triviality when compared to the horrors he caused. Ditto for this relic and islam.

On the Island of Gotland in Sweden there is a small church (Gothem Church) dating back to 13th to early 14th century which has a painting of “Mahomet” and his name written under it.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothem_Church

The fresco from the 16th century shows Saint Christopher carrying Baby Jesus through the swift river. While True Christianity™ prevails, the Pope (“papa”) and Mohammed (“mahomet”) perish in the waves. In those days Sweden belonged to Denmark.

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gotland-Gothem_kyrka_Wandmalerei_02.jpg

Incidentally, there are also the headless remains of burried native Swedes from the same time period on that very same Island who for unknown reasons to archeologists, had been beheaded… They believe, instead, that they were ambushed by the “Danish king” and his men.

Europeans are completely blind to over 1,000 years of history where millions upon millions of white Europeans were captured in slave raids by African and Turkish Muslims and shipped and sold to continents around the world, and especially to the Middle East. In fact there is a 600 year slave manuals written by Muslims describing the characteristics of each slave from around the world they had captured. The Swedes are desperate to give their Muslim invaders some kind of link to their heritage no matter how fragile the fraud is. Of course the Vikings did meet Muslims during their travels through Russia to the Black Sea then all the way to Constantinople and beyond. When they sailed to the Mediterranean Sea and visited North Africa and the Middle East they absolutely had contact with Muslims. Did they convert? Maybe a few did. But it is highly unlikely. First of all Muslims do not allow drinking which was the major pastime of all Vikings. Viking lived pork too. The story above is wishful thinking , sort of like people who see pictures of Jesus or the Virgin Mary on the sides of barns or tree stumps. I don’t mean this as disrespect but that is mire likely than a Viking wearing anything that would say the words “Allah. If Swedes push this desperate hoax they are truly finished as a people.

Beginning Arabic language student chiming in: The initial vertical line is connected to the following two vertical lines, making it an “L” not an “A”. That would make the symbol “For God” instead of “God.” Also, and more importantly, Allah just means “God” and isn’t specific to the Mohammed-revealed version of God. “Allah” is the Arabic language “Dios,” “Dieu,” “Gott,” etc. and is used in Christian scriptures written in Arabic. How some researchers claim that symbol is somehow evidence of “Islamic influence” is straw-graspingly weird. The Arabic language predates Islam, and will probably outlast it.

While still a “pagan”, Vladimir the Great of Kiev (grandson of Saint Olga, the first Rus’ convert to Roman Christianity) was also a serious student of comparative religion. Among the delegations invited to Kiev circa 986 were representatives from the Islamic Volga Bulgars. Knyaz Vladimir was intrigued by their presentation and took “a whole course in Islam”. Ultimately, Knyaz Vladimir found restrictions on pork “ludicrous”, circumcision “frankly disgusting”, and teetotalism “out of the question”. Knyaz Vladimir ultimately opted for Orthodox Christianity to unify the Rus’ and baptized the entire population of Kiev in the Dnieper River in the fall of 989. As the author of “Vladimir The Russian Viking” (Vladimir Volkoff) noted, “if the Ottoman Empire did not annex Europe five centuries later, it is because a Russian prince was a little to fond of his cup of mead”!!

There was contact between Vikings and the Muslims living in Constantinople but the history is not nice. One sees very little about this written in public. Vikings used to go down the large rivers in Europe and raided the Slavic nations and took fair haired women as slaves to sell in the muslim market in Constantinople (as sex slaves). This is how they made lots of money and then came home to relax …. until the next raid. It was rather daring to do as some never came back.
