Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Saudi Grand Mufti forbids jihad against Jews, calls Hamas “terror organization”

Nov 19, 2017 8:40 pm By Robert Spencer

If this report is accurate, this is another sign of the Trump Effect. I doubt this heralds genuine change in the Saudi worldview or Wahhabi Islamic theology, but the Saudis need the United States in their struggle against Iran, and so they’re making “moderate” noises. But the Qur’an and Sunnah say what they say. If the Iranian threat were to be neutralized, these signs of Saudi “moderation” would melt into the air, but they’re good to see while they last.

“Israeli min welcomes Saudi mufti’s anti-Hamas remarks,” Anadolu Agency, November 14, 2017:

An Israeli minister on Monday welcomed remarks by a mufti of Saudi Arabia that Palestinian resistance group Hamas is a terror organization.

“We congratulate Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, the grand mufti of Saudi Arabia, as well as the head of Ulema (Islamic scholars) for his fatwa forbidding the fight against the Jews and forbidding to kill them,” Israeli Communications Minister Ayoub Kara wrote on his official Twitter account.

The minister also welcomed the mufti’s remarks in which he considered Hamas a terror organization, adding “I invite the mufti to visit Israel; he will be welcomed with a high level of respect.”

Earlier, the mufti said while answering a question on a television program that fighting against Israel was inappropriate and said Hamas was a “terror organization” in reply to a question regarding last July’s anger across the Israeli-occupied West Bank when Israel shut Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is venerated by Muslims and Jews, following a deadly shootout….

The answer is to kick them out of the West, and develop alternative energy.

The Saudi King has said he is concerned about the Saudi economy, which is based almost entirely on oil reserves, which are now running low.

But that has never really bothered most Muslims before–and the devout ones not at all, unless they are extorting money from Infidels–so we will see.

  5. Ed Lee says

    Nov 19, 2017 at 9:25 pm

I disagree, Robert. I think this is a great development. The Saudis realize that their stranglehold on oil is rapidly disappearing because of horizontal, directional drilling and fracking (technologies invented and developed in the United States); plus, with the transition to electric cars just starting, they are being forced to take a giant step into the modern, economically diversified world. As you point out, they need our military equipment to keep the Iranians at bay, but that is just one of several things prompting them to back off from the hard line of Islamic fundamentalism. I think they also realize that the large number of forums like Jihad Watch are getting the word out, all around the world, about the true nature of Islam, and they know that they can’t win against an educated and informed public.

I also think this a major advance. So many times Robert and others have belittled the efforts of reformers, like Zuhdi Jasser and others, for being insignificant lone figures who are practicing their own Islam without any impact on the Muslim world. This is a grand mufti of Saudi Arabia. Big league.

Even if Trump was a motivating factor there must be some Islamic justification. For a fatwa to have any weight it must be based on text. Correct?

Finally, thanks to President Obama, Iran will be a major threat for a long time. The Saudis will have to cooperate with the US for a long time as well; hopefully long enough that it will actually have a major effect.

      …………………………..

RCCA–with the greatest respect–even if these reforms really do hold up–and I fervently hope they do–this does not actually change Islam itself one whit.

There have been lax rulers before–this does not mean that they have actually changed the creed of Islam–just followed it less closely.

As David Wood has pointed out, we are the first generation in the history of the world with full public access to the core Islamic texts and the ability to disseminate criticism globally. Islam as a doctrine may never change, but it can be fatally weakened, as countless Muslims who have never seen criticism of Islam are repeatedly exposed to such criticism and find themselves becoming apostates or their faith being shaken and reduced. Ali Sina and some others have for years been saying that Islam will die much more quickly than people suspect. What is happening in Saudi Arabia now is of course in significant part about the Saudis’ immediate strategic and economic needs, as Robert Spencer points out. But I think it is also perhaps to some extent about the increasing penetration everywhere of uncensored information and unavoidable transparency. Yes, there is a huge distance still to go. But what is happening in Saudi Arabia is not entirely a sham. However much you suppress freedom, it inevitably pushes like grass through the cracks in the concrete and breaks the concrete open. Who would have thought that the Soviet Union would raise up a Gorbachev who would himself shepherd in the end of the Soviet Union?

With information so quickly spread, it may well be possible that inoculation against islam can be done on a large scale.

I believe this is all tied to Kushner’s dealing, Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia and the huge arms deal with the Saudis. I think the Saudis are, again, *pretending* to be America’s ally and friend. (I don’t think the Israelis seriously believe it; their problem is they are so shortsighted when it comes to security issues that they will treat with the devil in order to deal with their most imminent concern, Iran.) The Saudis, I believe, are prepping for their upcoming war with Iran and building deals that will force the Americans and Israelis to side with them. A lot of young American lives would be lost fighting for a treacherous two-faced friend.

I suspect Trump played serious hardball with the Saudis. As Trump, like few politicians, gets it that Islam is totalitarian, we can suppose that he has been viscerally aware for a long time that Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s hearts of darkness fomenting terrorism and Wahabi Islam around the globe. As Trump was the only politician with both the awareness and the courage to suggest a moratorium on Muslim immigration, so I’ll bet he was much tougher on the Saudis than the terrible mediocrities GWB and Obama. I’m guessing the “Trump effect” is a big part of what’s happening in Saudi Arabia now.

I agree, Flavius. I’m still confused about the power grab, but I think it has become apparent that Iran is a power to be reckoned with. Fighting proxy wars around the globe with minions Hizbollah and the Houthis, and doing so pretty effectively, Iran has been pulling some very bold stuff everywhere you look, and making serious moves now to assert itself as a global power. Naturally, the Saudis are moving toward their equivalent of DEFCON 2, as Iran’s mortal enemies.
I am not nearly as excited as eduardo about Trump and Kushy’s recent late-night undertakings in Riyadh (let’s hope by some stroke of luck, they’ve pulled off something significant over there, deal-wise), nor am I as warm, fuzzy, and elated about the mufti’s pronouncements as some fellow posters; Like many here, I’m just a little too jaded about islam in general, and especially these republics and regimes, to really get my enthusiasm on.

Then again, this could all be fake news, and that mufti (I love saying the word mufti, don’t you?) could actually just be John Turturro with a makeup job, wearing a kaffiyeh in a red herring CNN press release.

Why would they intentionally take such an allegedly state-sanctioned risk at this point? Must be some nefarious reason.

While this sounds all too good, cautious optimism is the order of the day.
With the Islamic teams choosing their players to join up for the “big” conflagration, these are but the first steps of enticement. What is worrisome is that we will become embroiled in this very old conflict between Sunni and Shia Islam which will spill over into a wider proxy war between the US, Russia and China. I would much rather sell arms, sit back, and let them duke it out without a single drop of US blood spilled. It just isn’t worth it.

    • shortfattexan says

      Nov 20, 2017 at 8:32 am

I agree. It is tempting, on an emotional level, to say, “Yay, the Saudis have changed and everything is now wonderful!”

But the Saudis are dragging around a lot of historical baggage – they have an extremely well-deserved reputation for horrific barbarism on a medieval level, and it’s going to take a lot more than a few words to overcome that.

And your concern about getting caught up in the Sunni-Shia conflict is well-founded. The cynic in me (or the realist in me – whichever way you want to look at it) can’t help but notice the timing here – these statements (and so far all they are is statements) about liberalization and modernization are happening just as tensions with Iran are rising. Should the Saudis and the Iranians ever come to a military confrontation, the Saudis would have absolutely no chance at all without assistance from the US. If the US or some other Western power does not intervene, the Iranians would walk all over the Saudis, and that would be the end of The Kingdom of the Two Holy Places. Whether deservedly or not, the current occupant of The Oval Office has a reputation which suggests he would not be as likely to come galloping to the Saudis’ rescue as would either of his two most recent predecessors. So it seems likely these noises the Saudis are making about modernization are primarily motivated by self-interest – that is, by the Al-Saud family’s pragmatic desire to stay in power no matter what.

Of course it is true that the fact that the reforms are motivated by selfish reasons doesn’t necessarily mean they are not real. But once again, it’s important to point out that, for all the talk, no actual reforms have taken place so far.

It’s also important to ask whether or not the Saudi people will allow such reforms. Most Saudis are definitely not in love with their government, and it’s anybody’s guess as to how much liberalization they would be willing to put up with before they start pushing back. Doubtless there are many Saudis who would welcome some liberalization, but just as certainly there are plenty of hard-line Wahhabists who think the government is already too liberal. Of those two groups, which one has more political influence? And, just as important, which of the two is more likely to resort to violence to get their way? The Al-Saud family is acutely aware of the fact that if they push too hard, too fast, they can wind up kneeling in Deera Square.

Yes, that would be one sign that things are really changing there. And Hindu and Buddhist temples for the many foreigners working there.
But the only meaningful change will happen only when the Saudi govt. stops the relentless global funding of its ‘official’ Wahabbism which is spreading the poisonous ‘kill infidels’ theology and which is especially dangerous to all the children being forcibly and brutally made to memorize the Koran. Then this idea is permanently ingrained in their brains, thereby increasing their chances of growing up into hateful humans, despising other religions and non-Arabic cultures.

And de-fang the Wahhabist Clerics that are running the show from behind the scenes.

And stop the pissing match between themselves and Iran over who has the biggest balls (and the ‘right’ version of Islam) in the region.

And I could keep going on and on and on. Saudi Arabia has so many problems, so many layers upon layers of filthy problems.

Frankly, the whole place needs nuking. The culture eradicated. But, that’s not an option, unless genocide becomes acceptable – ergo, good luck seeing any actual, sincere improvement from that roiling, seething cesspit dump. The only thing I trust the Saudis to do – is keep being the sickening, decadent, dishonest, vicious, primitive animals that they’ve always been.

Dear All, does anyone have any idea on what parts of the doctrine the Grand Mufti based his statement? Did he quote abrogated verses? If he does not back his statement with true theological argumentation, we can safely say that it’s a PR stunt and that he does not believe it himself. But I cannot find any information on this… Greetings

HUH? You mean it is isn’t a floral arranging class?

OK… now let’s go a bit further and admit the obvious again: ISLAM CONTAINS A BIGOTED DOCTRINE OF WARFARE AGAINST DISBELIEVERS FOR THE SOLE REASON THAT THEY ARE DISBELIEVERS.

C’mon, Grand Mufti, you can do it.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is moving too far, too fast. Saudi society can not reverse 100 years of frothing Jew-hatred overnight. I anticipate a huge intifada in Saudi, soon. I wonder who MbS expects to support him when the shooting and bombing start?

Exactly! And this mufti is playing taqiyya to fool the West! There is no way he can go against Mo/allah’s edit to kill the jews and infidels. It is very well know Muslims lie and break all their treaties to serve their own interests and this is one of them. Nobody will pay any attention to it and Muslims will continue their jihad against all of us!

      ………………………….

Well, this is just absurdly ignorant. Individuals and groups can be “assimilated” through conversion or forced conversion to Islam, but this does not change their race or ethnicity.

The ethnicity of an area can be changed through invasion, intermarriage, rape, and driving out or murdering the original inhabitants, but this is a much different matter.

These last are exactly how the Levant and the entire Middle East became so heavily Arab.

Of course, besides conversion, and area can become heavily Muslim by also murdering and driving out non-Muslims. This has nothing to do with assimilation, though.

Does Ibrahim itace muhammed grasp this difference? I very doubt it, since this is the sort of “assimilation” he has in mind for us…

Another salient point–when civilized Infidels talk about assimilation, they mean immigrants assimilating to our societal values.

When Muslims talk about assimilation, they mean that the native population be forced to submit to Islam.

With guarded optimism we should encourage this grand mufti to become the voice of moderation within Islam. If he takes the opportunity to become the beacon of peace, and a target, then it may bring out morevoices of moderation in Islam. That could result in a divide between moderate and radical Islam.

If that happens we will at least be able to clearly identify our enemies and, perhaps our allies.

BUT ….. watch the legt hand of this mufti while he is showing us his right hand. A grain of salt can go a long way where takkiya may be involved.

Saudi Arabia stones women to death and regularly beheads victims in public. None of this is very “moderate”, I’m afraid.

If the statement by the Mufti is true, and he may have said it, see cites below, it and the Saudi rapprochement with Israel may be related to the deterioration of the relationship between Saudi and Pakistan. Years ago, there were reports that Saudi was funding Pakistani nuclear weapons programs in exchange for a promise of access to those weapons if Saudi needed them.
The Pakistanis seem to have reneged on this, and now the Saudis desperately need a regional, nuclear-armed ally. Hence Israel. What the Israelis will demand for their participation, and what limits they will put on their activity is yet to be seen.
Looks like a big furball developing there.
