“This is not a democratic decision, the council has ignored the vast majority of its electorate. The church has been ringing out for centuries, it’s not a new noise. It’s the beating heart of this town.”
Would authorities have been so quick to move on a noise complaint against a mosque making the call to prayer over loudspeakers? What do you think?
“Sandwich church bells silenced after neighbour’s noise complaint,” BBC, November 22, 2017 (thanks to Leonard):
The bells of a church which have rung since 1779 are to be silenced after a noise complaint by a neighbour.
St Peter’s Church in Sandwich, Kent, chimes every 15 minutes but Dover District Council served a night-time noise abatement order, despite 85% of the town’s population objecting.
Carole George, Save The Chimes campaign leader, said it threatened “traditions and history” in the medieval town.
The council said it had a “statutory duty to investigate noise complaints”.
More than 3,500 people signed a petition to keep the bells in the Norman church ringing.
The council’s decision this week will silence the bells between 23:00 and 07:00 GMT.
‘Beating heart’
It comes after the complaint was made in the summer. Save The Chimes then surveyed people in the town and only 15% were indifferent to, or did not like the bells.
Mrs George said: “This is not a democratic decision, the council has ignored the vast majority of its electorate.
“The church has been ringing out for centuries, it’s not a new noise. It’s the beating heart of this town….

So anyone within earshot of a mosk loudspeaker, now has a straightforward case to present if they try to do their 5 a.m. dance routine.

I would assume that they will come up with some kind of excuse for not doing the same to them. “Well, the church rang since 1779, so we have to let the mosques catch up.”

It is about thwarting the will of the people in support of lawyered deviants; foreign and domestic.
It is why our societies are crumbling out from under us.

Seems like the bells have been there a lot longer than the person who complained. Why did they move there in the first place. Tell them to move and ring the bells again.
WESTPAC Spy says
Yeah, that’s one thing that occurred to me when I was responding to Brian’s comment (2nd in the thread). If you came from a Muslim country and couldn’t stand the sound to the call to prayers, why on earth would you choose to live close to a church if you thought the bells would bother you?

Exactly so they can shut them down and replace them with the screeching Muslim call to prayer.

Now it is quite obvious that the left and Muslims often collude to harass Christians and suppress christian symbols from public space. In France the same “secularist” organization demanding the removal of a cross supported the construction of a mosque. In Spain leftists political parties along with Muslim organizations want to expropriate Cordoba’s Cathedral to make it a Muslim mosque.

The chimes are the town’s TRADITION and part of its touristy appeal.
A compromise might be reached if the chimes could be abated during the night to ring less loudly while still ringing.
The fear is that such restriction might lead to the imposition of discriminatory Sharia which forbids ringing of church bells entirely.

I agree – it is usually townies who have not grown up in the area and know little of the traditions.
However, at the risk of being out of step with everyone I think they have reached a good compromise. The bells can ring all during the day and only stop ringing between 11 pm and 7 am. Seems sensible to me and I was raised bang next door to the church – the bells could be a mite intrusive at times.

Read Matthew 24. It is the nightly news worldwide. If we live the normal life span, you and I will see the prophecies fulfilled in the book of Revelation. Matthew 24 tells us that the generation alive to see Israel stand in her place again after 2,000 years of being dead and buried in the nations, that generation (the 1948 Generation) will not die off before the SON OF MAN returns to rule the entire globe from Jerusalem.
HE is returning in your day. Are you ready to face HIM ?
Carolyne says
Gosh, I missed the deadline. I was born earlier than 1948. Oh! No!
Personally, I think it’s looney to believe that some God impregnated a human woman and they had a child. Believing in some place high in the sky there is apple pie for the good is looney, too. Christians worship three gods and Hindus worship many. Muslims worship one equally looney god.
Looney is as looney does.
There is no evidence of any of these gods. You are welcome to such delusion, though.
WESTPAC Spy says
So, what you’re saying is that the Christian concept of the trinity is beyond your limited understanding. Whoever wrote the Quran also didn’t understand the trinity. Whoever wrote the Quran also thought Christians believed in three gods; Allah, Issa (the wrong word for Jesus; in Arabic it should have been Yesua, thus making several claims the Quran makes for itself demonstrably false), and Mary. It’s exactly the kind of “trinity” you’d expect 7th century Arabic caravan traders and livestock breeders to come up with, but you’d expect a divinity to do much, much better. So in among the claims the Quran makes that are ruled out, is the claim to divine origin.
No, God did not physically impregnate a woman, and Christians believe in one God. We’re Triune monotheists.
There is a great deal of evidence for Jesus, God in the flesh. You can reject it if you like, but you can’t say there is no evidence. On the other hand there is no evidence for atheist Richard Dawkins’ favorite substitute for a creator, the multiverse. If it makes you feel better join forces with your fellow atheists and believe in something for which there isn’t a shred of evidence.
WESTPAC Spy says
“Personally, I think it’s looney to believe that some God impregnated a human woman and they had a child.”
As I said, it didn’t happen this way. The Gospel of John:
“The Word Became Flesh
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The trinity is a single God, but within the one God are three eternal, coequal persons. So Jesus’ wasn’t brought into creation when Mary became pregnant. He had always existed with God, and was fully God. He simply became man and entered into his own creation via Mary. It’s difficult to understand. I believe this is similar to what Einstein meant when he talked about God. A supreme intelligence, an immense spirit beyond human understanding. But one of the purposes of the incarnation was that humanity might know God. Somewhat amusingly both the Quran and the Bible say that God is unlike anything in nature and beyond human understanding. Yet Muslims constantly object to the very idea of the trinity because there’s nothing like it in nature and it’s difficult to understand. While Allah is easy to understand; one in being and one in person. In other words, they have to reject their own book’s concept of Allah in order to reject the Christian concept of God. So much for the divine origin of the Quran.
Hope this helps r.e. the doctrine of the trinity.

They told me blood curdling tales of Serbian police being overrun and ambushed by ethnic Albanians, the rampant drug and arms smuggling that led to the paramilitaries being brought in. The book INAT by Scott Taylor gives an excellent insight into the war without the NATO spin. He also explains the detremental consequences of the contentious bombing campaign

I have to admit, I would spin out if church bells were ringing every hour on the hour after 11pm at night and before 7am. That’s why I choose to not live near a Church or some other major public bell.
If the majority want to keep it – then keep those bells ringing at those awful hours. The minority who don’t like it can either move or invest in earplugs.
If they are Muslims who have made the complaint – then I suggest ramping the bell ringing up by a factor of ten. Blast that town, deafen everyone with bells for all I care, in that case!
LeftisruiningCanada says
On the 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 hours it will only be a single, double or triple ‘bong’ respectivly if its anything like the ones ive known. Really not that noticeable, especially once you’re accustomed.
The hourly ‘bongs’ will usually be the number of the hour. Midnight is the longest of course.
Could be wrong, but that’s how they often are. Where they still exist.
Sarah says
Well, I could handle the odd ‘bong’, LOL. Absolutely no pun intended!
I assumed they were ringing those bells, celebratory style. You are right – people do get accustomed to certain regular noises. If anything, everyone would probably notice if they suddenly stopped.
Here I am, picturing the mad pealing and ringing – aren’t I the big blonde today 🙂
LeftisruiningCanada says
The nature of the bell ringing wasn’t really made clear in the article, nor in several others published on the same subject.
The vagaries of european church bell signals are not required learning anywhere i’m aware of, so don’t worry 😉
Personally, the gentle and regular sounds of the 1/4 hourly and hourly time signals have always been welcome. They give a certain structure to the day, even a structure to the communal life of a place, especially to the people working in the fields who lacked watches, as was part of the original intent of the whole thing. Talking about it makes me miss it now. Ah well…..
Patricia Halligan says
Probably twenty years ago some historical old Church Bells were imported from England to be installed in a little stone Anglican pioneer church in Mandurah Western Australia where I lived for a few years. You should have heard the palava over the ANTICIPATED noise they were going to make early on a Sunday morning. That was even BEFORE they started ringing! The complaints came from the SECULARISTS NOT the Muslims as there would have been very few if any Muslims living in Mandurah at the time.Secularists are as big an enemy of Christianity as Islam is .They hate God and Jesus Christ with a passion which can only come from Satan.I also remember the rollicking Pope Benedict got here before his visit for commenting on the secular nature of Australia..A compromise was reached over the bells by a pathetically weak Anglican clergy which meant that their lovely sound was so muted they could hardly be heard a stone’s throw away at the nearby Catholic Church where I went to.I remember feeling very sad about it at the time.I am even more sad now because Christian freedom has declined even more since then as the secularist voices have got bolder, louder and more hate filled.
LeftisruiningCanada says
It’s true that rebellion against the Creator and His Son Christ is common to us all, until we are regenerated.
It’s also true, though less profound, that hearing the word ‘palava’ makes me want to be in WA again 🙂
Carolyne says
It seems to me that some of you who profess to be “Christians” are showing a lot of hate toward those who are not, i.e. Atheists. I thought hate was “Unchristian.” Didn’t someone say “Love your neighbor as yourself?” Or does than mean only love Christians and hate everyone else. How very Muslim of you.
LeftisruiningCanada says
Where is the hate Carolyne?
Sometimes i do express some frustration and such at the thought of what goes on, and sometimes make some jokes that might get me called a racist, but im not sure i’m being genuinely hateful.
Loving ones neighbor is certainly the idea, carried out in my own life with varying low levels of success, but it comes in many forms. Evangelism, from the Christian point of view, is really the most loving thing someone can do for another, though that is increasingly called hate too, even in England and Canada.
Hate isn’t necessarily unchristian either, though we must be careful how it’s defined. I do hate evil things, evil ideas, even evil people at times…though that last one is done knowing that i myself could very well be that evil person if the Lord had not changed things.
Islam is certainly hated without guilt, it being without doubt demonic and evil. Muslims on the other hand are a different story. They are imprisoned in an evil belief system, at the will of the evil one himself. Some, by their total identification with that evil can cause me to hate them……but then i remember that the apostle Paul too was once a murderer of Christians, and look what the Lord did with that one!
I don’t always love other Christians, and i don’t always love everyone else….ive felt dislike and hate for everyone. I am an equal opportunity hater i’m afraid. It’s not right, indeed it is sinful and knowing it be so while doing it only makes things worse……until i remember that Christ died even for those awful sins.
When i hate my brother or my neighbor i do that which Christ would have me not: When a muslim hates an unbeliever, they are not contradicting mohammad.
I guess there is the difference.
Im sorry if i have given a bad example by being hateful in your judgment.
Carolyne says
I don’t hate God and I don’t hate Christ. How could I hate something which doesn’t exist? You are free to do whatever you wish in this regard and I request you grant me the same favor. Thank you.
LeftisruiningCanada says
It may be that you don’t actively hate God, but there are many secularist who do.
According to Christian belief you are however in rebellion against Him. The denial of His existence is proof of that.
I know that will seem ridiculous, and may sound to you as bad as something a muslim might say.
The difference is that no Christian is going to abuse you in any way whatsoever. We will pray for a change of your heart, give you a Bible, try to do our fallen best to show Christs love for sinners, and His forgiveness of sins by taking our just punishment upon Himself on the cross.
No subjugation, no jizya, no sharia, no abuse and rape of uncovered women.
We are all humans dealing with a fallen nature, but there is a difference between the Gospel of Christ, and the islam of mohammad.
Hugo Hackenbush says
Noise is noise but one has to wonder: Did someone “build to the nuisance” and then demand the “nuisance” be removed? Did someone move near the church knowing that the chimes existed and then complain? In any event there is one good element in this in that the same principle can then be applied to any other sound nuisance. In particular, a NEW nuisance that intrudes on existing property such as a new mosque. The failure to apply the law equally will open the door to a lawsuit (I hope, as, after all, this is England).

Oh god!! Sounds familiar. Here in India many temple festivals that were going on for centuries, are being curtailed or whittled wherever there is a muslim majority. Slowly all infidel festivals will be curtailed or altogether eliminated
