He is only voicing support for the protests against economic injustices, not the calls for the downfall of the Islamic Republic, but still, it is significant that a major figure of the Iranian clerical establishment would break ranks.
“Qom’s top legal, religious cleric announces support for Iran protests,” Al Arabiya, December 30, 2017:
A prominent hardline cleric responsible for being one of Iran’s leading reference on Islamic jurisprudence has voiced support for the ongoing protests currently gripping several cities across the country.
Considered the top religious cleric in the city of Qom, Hossein Noori Hamedani, on Saturday supported the popular protests against the high prices and high costs of living in the country.
“The people are demanding their right and we must support them,” Hamedani was quoted by the Iranian media.
He added: “People are demanding their legitimate rights because they suffer from high living costs and the difficulty of living, as well as the spread of unemployment,” calling on the government to work to reduce poverty and unemployment and avoid the anger of the people….

It’s like the old saying: if you can’t beat them (to death) then fake support them. That way the MSM is happy, doesn’t put them on the spot.

“islamic jurisprudence”
That must be like spending years studying for an “islamic studies PhD”:pointless and a waste of time.
….on a subject matter which can be defined thus:It is based on a house of cards standing on a foundation of sand… constructed out of a tissue of lies..
islam is based on the idea that ..
allah (who curses the Jews) gave his “perfect”..
koran(a book that never stops vilifying the Jews, denies Christ, promotes hatredetc)to..
muhammed(a mass murderer of Jews) with the help of..
jibreel{“The angel jibreel is the enemy of the jews”}
Since is based on a book allegedly given by an anti-Semitic parody of God called allah to a mass-murdering,self-appointed “prophet” muhammed through the intercession of an anti-Semitic fallen angel called jibreel it is obvious that so too is islamic jurisprudence based on the same warped principles.
islam:A “house of cards” built on a foundation of sand .
Iranians are Shi’tes so their version is as warped as the sunnis.
No doubt many people are fed up with having their country run by religious morons(the shites).

FYI, the brainwashing of Islam is deeper than you realize. Take a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Lakers and combine him with a believer in the master race theory and you are somewhat close to understanding the Islamic mindset. Even lukewarm Muslims support the political supremacism of Islam and have a lukewarm belief in Sharia law. They would be loyal to Muslims who are conducting jihad and not alert the authorities in most cases. Most Muslims are unenthusiastic members of Western societies who do not socialize with non-Muslims unless absolutely necessary.

I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t understand that Muhammad was an evil man or believes that an evil man would be chosen by a loving God as a prophet.
Kepha says
Never forget that the late Mohammed Riza Shah Pahlavi strongly identified as a Shiah Muslim and took his position as a sort of “defender of the faith” for that creed very seriously. His son Reza Pahlavi, whom some of the protesters are apparently now calling “Reza Shah” also identifies as a Shiah Muslim. Probably the overwhelming majority of the protesters, whatever they think of the mad mullahs, also see themselves as Shiah Muslims. This is a turbulence in a society and culture which official America barely understands at all. Let’s stay out of it. Be the well-wisher for liberty everywhere, but champion only of America’s own, PresidentTrump.

Very true, Kepha.
I very much hope things improve in Iran–but seeing this as a broad rejection of Islam there seems unrealistic.

He may simply be one of the clever clerics who sees and opportunity to re-brand himself as a “reformer” in case his fellow clerics get swept out power by a popular revolt.

this is an excellent sign! That guy seems to think the regime is crumbling and wants to save islam from being completely sidelined after Khamenei & Co are swept aside.

Oh, it’s a mullah in a white hat. It matches his beard. He must be the good guy. Most of them wear black hats and dye their whiskers orange.

I think that was a joke.

He has recognized the danger for their theocracy. In the mean time there may be more people in Iran, rejecting under cover Islam. In the West the Leftist Islam apologist like PM May are vomiting their rotten pusillanimity.
Ibrahim itace muhammed says
Such protests against economic hardships as à result of using resources to support freedom fighters líke Hamas and Hesbullah should better take place in saudi Arabia against zionist evîl saudi Royal Who steal more than half of the income from oil sales to finance deadly terrorist groups worldwide purchasing obsolète American weapons. In contrast, Iranian leaders are using thé ressources to manufacture weapons and promoting tecnological know-hows for thé développement of Iranian economy.
so, thé spending by Iran are not waste, the benefits Will émerge in thé future. Thé protesters are mere saboteurs serving the interests of foreign enemies of Iranian líke evil united states and evîl zionist state of Israel.
