The outcry over this tonight is predictable and immense. “International bullying,” tweeted Linda Sarsour. Yes, but Trump is the one who is standing up to it. The idea that the U.S. should subsidize its enemies and ideological foes is a hallmark of the failed foreign policy establishment that needs to be thoroughly repudiated.
“Trump threatens to cut aid to U.N. members over Jerusalem vote,” by Roberta Rampton and Michelle Nichols, Reuters, December 20, 2017:
WASHINGTON/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that vote in favor of a draft United Nations resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
The 193-member U.N. General Assembly will hold a rare emergency special session on Thursday – at the request of Arab and Muslim countries – to vote on a draft resolution, which the United States vetoed on Monday in the 15-member U.N. Security Council.
The remaining 14 Security Council members voted in favor of the Egyptian-drafted resolution, which did not specifically mention the United States or Trump but which expressed “deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem.”
U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, in a letter to dozens of U.N. states on Tuesday seen by Reuters, warned that Trump had asked her to “report back on those countries who voted against us.”
She bluntly echoed that call in a Twitter post: “The U.S. will be taking names.”
Several senior diplomats said Haley’s warning was unlikely to change many votes in the General Assembly, where such direct, public threats are rare. Some diplomats brushed off the warning as more likely aimed at impressing U.S. voters.
According to figures from the U.S. government’s aid agency USAID, in 2016 the United States provided some $13 billion in economic and military assistance to countries in sub-Saharan Africa and $1.6 billion to states in East Asia and Oceania….

I long ago learned from experience, both mine and others, that actions speak louder than threats. Bought friends go away as soon as the money stops. There is no reason to waste time and money on people or countries that must be bought.

Dead right. Trump is my hero!
Myrtel Linder says
Trump has truly surprised me, I had no idea that he had the guts to stand for what is right, at first i thought he was “the lesser of two evils”, but so far, he is doing a wonderful job, as the President of a Christian nation, an hated for his success, by our liberals!!
dumbledoresarmy says
Write to him. Tell him. **Encourage him**. Especially encourage him to follow through: to *move* that Embassy, ASAP. And encourage him to follow through on the matter of cutting ‘aid’: propose that Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and the ‘palestinian’ arab muslim pseudo-‘state’, should be first on the list to lose their subsidies and favours. And say – “Think of the money we’ll save!”

David M says
A country 20 trillion dollars in debt like the US shouldn’t be “giving” money to anyone, with the exception of direct food aid to starving people.
Linnte says
That’s exactly how I feel. It doesn’t make sense. Even the money we give to Israel should be reconsidered. I am all for Israel, but why do they need 4.5 billion dollars a year from us? That’s a lotta matzoh balls!
Carolyne says
I’m not even sure about starving people. North Koreans are starving, Venezuelans are starving. It is their own fault. Why should we subsidize these failed Communist systems? We have hungry people wright here in the US. Saw a homeless man yesterday. We need to help our own and let the Pakistanis, etc. fend for themselves and trust Allah to send them food.
Karen says
I agree w this. I’m sorry for the starving people in N Korea, but sending money or even food would do no good. Sadly, it’s pointless, and wastes scarce resources to try to help dictatorships. The corruption at the top diverts all the aid.
Lou says
Let’s see If Allah can at least send Manna to the Muslims for one day. Of course he can’t. In contrast, the God sent the Israelites manna to eat for 40 years in the wilderness.

When does Linda Sarsour have time to worry about President Trump since she spends all her time bullying Asmi Fathelbab and telling Asmi Fathelbab she has to accept sexual harassment as a good Muslim woman should?
Phil Copson says
“When does Linda Sarsour have time to worry about President Trump since she spends all her time bullying Asmi Fathelbab …….”
Richard – you are doing Sarsour an injustice here; after all, she found time to set up a charity collecting money on behalf of a Jewish organisation that had been targeted by her co-religionists.
Maybe one day she’ll also find the time to actually hand it over to them, since last I heard, they still hadn’t seen a penny of it…..
Angus66 says
All Safe out wanted was to APPEAR to be a friend to Jews, which is exactly what happened.
As you correctly pointed out it was nothing more than a publicity stunt.
Hats off to Trump for this move.
Even as a young boy – who knew exactly NOTHING about politics or world affairs – I wondered the following:
Why does my country give hundreds of millions of dollars to countries that hate us, our way of life and would like nothing more than killing every last American citizen?

Matthieu Baudin says
A thoroughly commendable approach by the President. This is all about a change of address for the U.S. Embassy in Israel. No-one is compelled to follow suit but if they play the old rouse of systematically frustrating and embarrassing the U.S. through the U.N. then they should expect to face consequences such as a reduction in foreign aid. Americans should hold their ground, let’s see in a new era and jettison the incoherent diplomacy of recent administrations.

This is a great idea, that I hope comes to pass. It is sheer vanity to think that we can moderate the behavior of radical brutes through UN payments, voluntarily submitting to blasphemy laws in our free Western societies, allowing Sharia to creep in via courts, laws, and financial institutions, and a host of other activities designed to appear ‘nice’. Accommodating Islam is a losing battle, because, as Robert Spencer would say, there is always more Islam to accommodate.
The time for open and honest engagement has come. Let’s deal honestly with our friends, and with our enemies. The chance for a positive outcome increases if we stand up for our values and interests, and draw some lines.
Richard says
Machiavelli wrote on the question of whether it is better to be loved or to be feared that if a monarch is loved, other monarchs will still act in their own best interests, whether it is damaging to their friend or not; whereas if someone is feared, that itself is the others’ self-interest.

For a number of years I have believed that the UN needs to leave the US and establish itself in some totalitarian country. The hate the US and they take advantage of their status in New York of not being responsible for crimes they commit. They do not even pay for traffic tickets. They park where they like, even in the middle of the street and there is no consequence. They take our money and try to destroy us. Not to mention the Real Estate taxes New York would get if that valuable property were developed to commercial or residential use. Kick them out. They are our enemies.
No more foreign aid to Muslim countries and no more UN in New York.
jayell says
The U.N. is now a spurious shambles since it has been hijacked by a gaggle of jumped-up nouveau riche nonentities who couldn’t tell the difference between a moral principle and a Wal-Mart advertising slogan, so Mr. Trump is absolutely right in telling them what they can go and do if they think they can dictate US policy and still expect it to be Santa Claus for their convenience. And talking about jumped-up nonentities with a clapped-out moral compass, why are we wasting time on the verbal pollution emanating from that hideous motor-mouth Sarsour, whom Mr.Trump should be charging for oxygen consumption on US territory as a designated walking waste of American space?
gravenimage says
There are more unfree than free or even semi-free nations in the world. No wonder the UN is such a mess.
Georg says
Exactly. Dumb leading the blind. It’s like when leftists rail against the US as being patriarchal or racist. Compared to whom?! Maybe against some hypothetical perfect entity, but compared to the mass of other countries we’re doing really, really well. Perhaps that could be noted at some point [when hell freezes over].
Karen says

Yet everyone falls for their tantrums. Oh dear.

I’ve left messages here and elsewhere for the New York planning people, suggesting that they could use that nice site more profitably. If the U.N. wanted a location that best reflected its current identity, then the wonderful city of Doha (aka Mickey-Mouse-Ville-on-sand + too many mosques) would be ideal, with its pretentious, oil-subsidised 21st.-century Disneyland architecture vainly attempting to conceal a 7th.-century social infrastructure that rightly belongs in a sociology museum. If that lot in their over-baked paradise can (with their characteristic honest integrity – sic) succeed in winning the bid to host the 2022 soccer World Cup (= running an ice-skating championship in a sauna), then they could also justifiably bid to host the permanent headquarters of the civilised world – according to their definition of the term, that is. And then their vast international airport might actually get a bit more business!

Do it Donald!
and I wish we in Oz would do it too, we give so much money to our “regional” partners who could not care less about us. I have been saying for ages that we should pull out of the UN human rights charter for refugees until Indonesia signs also.
Time we all stood up to the UN and stopped feeding the rabbit countries that just keep breeding without responsibility!
We wonder why there is a refugee crisis out of Sub Saharan countries?!? we keep feeding them!!

Dragar – the same could be said for the UK and ‘foreign aid’ much of which finances despots who hate us as a nation, but’re happy to take our money. Moshe says
Before cutting foreign aid based on UN votes, I urge President Trump to reread former President Obama’s landmark 2009 address in Cairo.
American foreign aid is essential, Pres. Obama shared, to address the tragic effects of Western “colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations.”
“As the Holy Koran tells us,” Pres. Obama reminded Americans and Egyptians alike, we should follow this guidance: “Be conscious of God and speak always the truth.”
“That is what I will try to do,” promised the former President: “to speak the truth as best I can, humbled by the task before us, and firm in my belief that the interests we share as human beings are far more powerful than the forces that drive us apart.”
President Obama was reminding us that all faith traditions echo the wisdom of Isaiah: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
Foreign aid under the Obama Administration aspired to these values. The FBI too is white as snow. I truly believe that. What’s more, if only Valerie Jarret were representing the United States in the UN today, there would be world consensus and not discord. Therefore, let us treasure Pres. Obama, Sec. Clinton, Robert Mueller and Andy McCabe: they have such beautiful souls in these troubled times.

Have you heard of the British Pakistani Christian Association? They have actually stepped up and urged the UK Government to *cease* giving ‘aid’ to Islamic Pakistan because of Pakistan’s institutionalised and horrible abuse of non-Muslim indigenous minorities. If anything, extended: demand that *all* UK ‘aid’ to any Islamic country – they’re *all* dreadful violators of human rights – should cease. The whole OIC should be as isolated as North Korea.

Motions at the UN are not by secret ballot, and shouldn’t be. UN elections are, and the complaint is that the secrecy leads to ‘clubiness’. Why shouldn’t a nation withhold funds from nations that oppose it routinely? Makes a lot of sense.

The seven countries that sided with the United States and Israel on a U.N. General Assembly resolution declaring “null and void” President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital are all small and obscure as world players.
Here’s the list:
1. Guatemala
2. Honduras
3. Marshall Islands
4. Micronesia
5. Nauru
6. Palau
7. Togo
If you haven’t heard of most of these nations, it’s because they are tiny islands in the Pacific.
Four of the countries — Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru and Palau — have combined populations less than Boise, Idaho. Nauru, for example, has a population of 10,000.
Put another way, the combined land mass of all seven countries puts it between that of Illinois and Florida.
Another 35 nations abstained from the 128-9 vote. Two are the United States closest neighbors, Canada and Mexico. The others are allies across the globe.

2. Argentina
3. Australia

Of the countries that had the decency and guts to vote NO: I would just like to mention that Palau is particularly well worth people’s tourist dollar. It has some of the most spectacular scenery and coral reefs in the *world*. World Heritage listed, if I recall correctly. Wonderful place for post-retirement tourist trip, or honeymoon, or just visit. So: reward them by booking your next holiday there!
Micronesia would also be a place worth visiting – beautiful and off the beaten track.
Give them some encouragement.
As far as the abstentions go – I am glad Australia abstained, but deeply ashamed that we didn’t have the guts and the moral clarity to step up and stand beside Israel in the midst of the shrieking mohammedan-led virtual lynch mob.
Abstentions need to be seen by the counter-jihad as a first step. They indicate a country that should be seen as ‘potentially-educable’. It is instructive that the Czech Republic and Hungary and Poland were among the abstainers; and that *South Sudan* was there as well.
Linnte says
Thanks for this list of nations. I was wondering who abstained and who stood with us. I don’t understand why Poland, Hungary and Czek Repub didn’t vote WITH us. Do you think it’s maybe because they are in deep doodoo with the EU, and don’t want to make waves?

Imagine if all those millions and millions that are being poured into assorted utterly ungrateful resentful mohammedan maws – notably Islamic Pakistan, and the so-called ‘palestinians’; and here’s a radical idea – cut off *Turkey* AND kick them out of NATO – AND cut off the abominable House of Saud, and the equally-vile Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, none of which need *any* ‘aid or special deals of any kind’ at all, they’re rolling in petrodollars – stopped.
The US would be able to clear a LOT of its national debt; and money that wasn’t redirected to clear debt, could be used as ‘seed money’ within the USA, to benefit Americans; and *that* would mean more money to pay for the necessary self-defence against Jihad.
