Until just the other day, Arthur Wagner was a leading member of Alternative for Germany, the anti-Islam party that has the Homeric epithet “right-wing” permanently affixed to it, and is known for its mantra that “Islam doesn’t belong in Germany.” Now, this once senior member of the party in Brandenburg, where he sat on the AfD’s state legislative committee, a member of the state committee with responsibility for churches and religious communities, has caused a sensation by converting to Islam.
He resigned his position on the party’s national executive committee on January 11 for what he called “personal reasons.” He will remain a member of the party. “The party has no problem with that,” its spokesman Daniel Friese said, adding that the AfD represents the interests of Muslims, and also of Christians and homosexuals.
Wagner became an AfD member in 2015 after switching from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU).
He refused to answer questions about his conversion.
“That’s my private business,” he told the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel.
No doubt Muslims, and not only in Germany, are delighted with this news. For what could it possibly mean other than that the light of Islam, its truth and beauty, had shown so bright that even someone like Arthur Wagner, despite the dismal company he had kept at the AfD, managed, as he learned more about the faith, and saw the wonderful effect it had on the Believers with whom he came into contact, to overcome his “islamophobia” and, still more heartening, simply had to become a Muslim himself?
Might there be more to this curious case than simply one more weak-minded Infidel — think of Tony Blair’s sister-in-law — being persuaded that Islam was the faith for him? The Tagesspiegel reported Wednesday that Wagner, who joined AfD shortly after it was founded in 2013, has in the past been active in a group assisting refugees.
It seems to me that there are three possible reasons why Arthur Wagner decided to convert to Islam. The first is the most obvious: that having been dead set against more Muslim immigrants, he decided to have a look into the faith whose adherents, according to his own party, “have no place in Germany,” and was struck by the sheer wonderfulness of Islam. After all, the refugees he’d been assisting were mostly Muslims, and inclined to sing the praises of their faith. To do what Wagner did out of genuine belief is not impossible — strange things happen every day.
But there are two other conceivable explanations for Arthur Wagner’s behavior. The first may be called the “cherchez-la-femme” (look for the woman) theme. Among the refugees Wagner had been helping, there might well have been a Muslimah who caught his fancy. And if she responded, well, since he’s not exactly Gregory Peck, he might have been thrilled.
As a female refugee, she would of course see a solution to all her problems if she could land this particular fish, and he, in turn, would be delighted to have such a mate. Of course, given that in Islam, men are superior to women, it would be unthinkable for a Muslim wife to submit to a non-Muslim husband. Before getting married, the non-Muslim husband-to-be must, therefore, convert to Islam. Which Arthur Wagner may have been perfectly willing to do.
There is still another conceivable variant. Muslims in Brandenburg, knowing of Arthur Wagner’s work with Muslim refugees, and of his desire for a mate, might have persuaded a Muslim woman, refugee or not, to respond to him, all in the path of Allah of course, and then to demand that he convert so that they might marry. What a coup for Islam that would be — and has now turned out, in fact, to be. You can just imagine how often Muslims will be bringing up the case of Arthur Wagner, as proof of Islam’s greatness, for it can “overcome even the worst sort of islamophobia.”
The third possible explanation is of the filthy-lucre sort. He might have thought of it himself, or someone may have suggested to him that, by turning Turk, there was money to be made. Think of all the speaking engagements now available to Arthur Wagner, throughout the deepest-pocketed Muslim lands — in Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar — or even audiences of Muslims in Germany. His subject would be the one that every devout Muslim wants to hear: “Why I Became A Muslim.” That triumphalist topic ought to be worth 50-100,000 dollars per speech, given that he was a high-ranking official in the AfD, the most unlikely, and therefore the most valuable, kind of convert. And after all, Wagner would have done nothing wrong. He became a Muslim, and now he’s speaking about it. Why shouldn’t he? How dare anyone question his motives? Is he any worse than so many of our past presidents, secretaries of state, national security advisors, big shots of every sort, who once out of office head out to the Gulf (Persian, Arabian, take your pick) to pocket most generous honoraria? Arthur Wagner has a story, he wants to tell it, and there are people, his fellow Muslims, who want to hear it.
Eventually we’ll find out what led Arthur Wagner to the One True Faith. If there’s a woman involved, he’s not going to keep her waiting. If it’s money he is after, just keep track of his speaking schedule. And if, mirabile dictu, he actually went from warning about Islam to becoming a Muslim, because he has indeed become a True Believer, then not just in Houston, but in Germany, Europe, the entire Western world, meine Damen und Herren, we have ein großes Problem.
Westman says
As espoused in Netflix’s, “House Of Cards”, the man who wants political office for money is a loser – the real game is power. How about a 4th option? Perhaps Wagner is creating a Muslim political party or inserting himself as an intercessor for Muslims?

*I do*. It’s not just that Arthur Wagner retreated from the fray–that might be understandable, given the abuse those openly concerned about the threat of Islam suffer. We see Anti-Jihadists here sometimes take a break from time to time when things get too depressing or intense.
But he didn’t do that–instead, *he went over to the enemy*. There is no excuse for that.
Diane Harvey says
A fourth, He lost his frappin’ mind.
mortimer says
Exactly, Diane. Anyone who joins Islam becomes amoral, obscurantist and incoherent, because Islam cannot be intellectually defended. It should be noted that almost everywhere now, Muslims have abandoned debate, because the COUNTER-INTELLECTUALISM and retreat from reason within Islam are FULLY OBVIOUS every time one hears a Muslim apologist speak.
Islam’s inconsistency becomes plain to see when Its myriad FLIP-FLOPS on every topic are revealed to a new Western audience.
CRUSADER says
Obviously the real reason is option #2: “cherchez-la-femme”…. It spins spies.
….and of course option #3 is a natural sequence…to pay for the woman….and money brings power and position…so, hmmm, lots of reasons to go rogue.
[Maybe, as far back as Himmler, ugly German males have held fascination for occult and kinky sexual attractions that boggle the minds of most naturally neutral folk.]
mortimer says
Arthur Wagner is ASHAMED to admit the real reason of this FLIPFLOP to the dark side. There is a sordid story behind it. We will learn it eventually.

A 5th reason. He thinks they will win — so, like a coward, he converts early. That way he keeps his head on his shoulders (when and if they take over). And with the majority of elites virtue signaling for Islam he has lots of company.
Islam might win the battle in Germany thanks to Frau Merkel. But many in the West are awakening to the existential danger posed by Islam. We will not surrender, we will never surrender. As Churchill said –“Come then, let us to the task, to the battle, to the toil — each to our part, each to our station”
TheTooner says
I think that’s a very real possibility. In this struggle there will be some, perhaps many, who will lose hope and convert.

Germany is a great place to be FROM.
Wellington says
Been that way from at least 1848 onwards, after all those revolutions going on back then in most of Europe, when my own ancestor, my German great-great grandfather, made his way to America.
I regularly reflect upon this and thank him for that. I am the beneficiary of his wisdom to this very day. Put another way, better by far to be a German-American than a German. Someone like Eisenhower comes to mind to further prove my point here.
CRUSADER says
Wellington,
Given your German roots,
why aren’t you calling yourself Von Blücher?
He came in the nick of time, after all, and made the difference in the mop up.
😉
Wellington says
Well, CRUSADER, Von Blucher was a Prussian, never mind his arriving in the nick of time to save, dare I say, Wellington, but my ancestors were from Catholic Bavaria, so this is why, among other reasons, I am not engaging in the appellation of “Von Blucher.”
After all, my ancestors on both sides, both German and Polish, were devout Catholics and so the Prussian Lutheran, Von Blucher, simply will not do. Nor, I fear, will I, having become the pagan that I am. But I digress.
CRUSADER says
Wellington, I like it when you digress. I learn each and every time you do that.
And, having seen the movie “Napoleon” (again) recently, I think yours is a fine appellation, sir.
Keep posting, Duke. Keep posting, Minister.
(you can’t see it, perhaps, but I bowed)
gravenimage says
I like your digressions, as well. 🙂
Kepha says
@Wellington at 8:54 PM:
Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, was an Anglo-Irish scion of the plantations which kept the Roman Catholic “native” Irish down.
But I hear you. My German roots are Jewish (although I am of the Reformed Christian persuasion), and my grandfather left to keep out of the Kaiser’s army–he didn’t want to spend a few years being cussed at by a Prussian NCO. My grandfather, it turns out, was from a little town lying just about where the old Roman _limes_ ran; so, perhaps, some of my ancestors may well have been dumped there in the wake of the 70 or 135 A.D. uprisings, back in the day when the Prussians were just a barely hear-of Baltic tribe.
gravenimage says
Kepha, one need not agree with the actions of a figure like the Duke of Wellington on all points to admire his storied defense against Napoleon.
I have just finished reading a fine book on the explorers Lewis and Clark. I admire these men greatly–but still condemn their being slaveowners.
This is not contradictory.

Jihadists may have some pictures of this schlub doing some kinky stuff with a bacha bazi Afghan boy. They told him convert or else. They could also be threatening his family. Let’s not kid ourselves that jihadists are above that; they are looking for propaganda points by any means necessary.
dumbledoresasrmy says
Yes. That is another possibility. *Blackmail and threats*.
utis says
He could also have been a mole, implanted from the start to infiltrate and snoop. There is also simple blackmail (only the nearly extinct species of true investigative reporters could discover what else is his “private business”). And let’s not forget that old persuader — threat of bodily harm to himself or his family.
If he’s got a muslima turning him out, that will have to surface eventually anyway. Meantime, I hope the AfD is smart enough to keep him completely ignorant on important things. And to not turn their back on him and his proteges.
CRUSADER says
This could make for a fetching movie screenplay.
utis says
Well the part about AfD watching their back is dead serious. Check out Leon Trotsky, who literally turned his back on a comrade and got an ice-pick in his head. Or Julius Caesar. Or Holofernes.
“No man can serve two masters,” as the Bible says.
dumbledoresasrmy says
That thought had occurred to me, also.
What better way to demoralise an inchoate resistance movement, than by sneaking someone into it – preferably to weasel their way into a high-ranking/ front ranking position – who then publicly and dramatically ‘turns’??
jewdog says
Wagner could actually be an old-right adherent to German fascism. Most AfD members are sincere people alarmed at the dangers of Islam and mass migration’s effects on Germany; they are not anti-Semites or racists – no, those buzzards tend to flock to leftwing parties and hook up with their fellow Jew-hating dreamers from Islamberg. But, there are also the die-hards who never threw in the towel after WWII ended. Some of them emigrated to Arab countries, converted to Islam, and helped in the war effort against Israel, but others became conservatives in the Pat Buchanan, paleo sense. It’s logical that they would admire Islam for its militant character, as Hitler did, and convert. My bet’s on that.
Mockingjay says
– Vey good point. And VERY likely indeed.
– He probably already believed that Jews were a great source of evil in the world, and now he has fully converted to that “religion”.
WorkingClassPost says
Yes, he could’ve believed all that AfD is far-right, extremist, neo-nazi propaganda, and joined them for that reason.
Then he realized that wasn’t true and the only way to get those ‘goodies’ was from islam.

So, this thread goes far back…and it works on the weaker-willed and the predilcted and the susceptible…
such as Herr Wagner.
Hindu American says
That “72-houris in after-life” reward thingy is a misread. I think the reward in the after-life is a 72-year old virgin.
David says
The other misread, or mistranslation, is “72 raisins”
gravenimage says
Yes–because raisins can be described as “modest” and “dark-eyed”… 🙂
StellaSaidSo says
Or perhaps the ‘cherchez les enfants’ scenario is more likely. The blackmailing potential of the classic ‘honey trap’ is not what it used to be. I wonder if Herr Wagner has ever been a guest on the Lolita Express…?
LeftisruiningCanada says
No…it would have a more refined name than that, and probably be a helicopter headed to some grim looking castle or châteaux or something.
StellaSaidSo says
Yes, you’re right, LIRC. Definitely a grim, grey fortress, high up in the mountains, with a discreet heli pad in the east tower, guards in smart uniforms patrolling the perimeter, and Kevin Spacey on Reception. Plus cellars full of hidden cameras and little boys in lederhosen. Am I getting close, do you think…?
LeftisruiningCanada says
Close to a nightmare if we keep imagining things in this direction 😀
StellaSaidSo says
Maybe someone has some serious dirt on Wagner, and conversion, followed by compliance with instructions, is the price of survival.
Custos Custodum says
Supposed “right” parties in Europe and, yes, here in the U.S. are often heavily infiltrated by government spies.
Either Wagner was one of them, or the spies found some dirt on him. Time will tell.
StellaSaidSo says
My thoughts exactly, CC. I suspect that, either way, we won’t hear a lot from Herr Wagner for a while. If we hear from him at all.
LeftisruiningCanada says
He has felt the power of the dark side…and turned to it.
CRUSADER says
LIRC,
What’s keeping you from turning Islamic?
You get to hang with hommies and treat women as whores….
You could live the gangstah lifestyle, broh.

LeftisruiningCanada says
“What’s keeping you from turning Islamic?”
Only Christ, i suspect. I’m not strong enough to fend off such powerful evil.
gravenimage says
I find nothing about Islam attractive. In fact, I cannot conceive of anything more repulsive.
LeftisruiningCanada says
Well yes, there is that too. But probably more than one person has gone up against islam thinking they couldn’t be taken in by the cult, and ended up joining them in the end.
It’s not just ideas we’re up against i think…
gravenimage says
I know some people eventually go over to the enemy out of fear or exhaustion–this is the case with some humiliated or threatened dhimmis. This is at least somewhat understandible.
But things had certainly not reached that point with Wagner. I suppose some people are attracted to evil. *Ugh*.
elee says
Did he get a visit from some Turkish “civilians”?
reyol says
Another possibility: He was Muslim all along and sprang his “conversion” at the critical moment when AfD was about to upset the German political order of things.
eduardo odraude says
Could it be that there are laws in Germany against excluding someone from a political party on the basis of religion? And so this Muslim infiltrated to the highest level of the AfD and only then brought his Muslim beliefs into the open? And now that he’s in the leadership, it will be tricky for the rest of the leadership to demote or expel him without people being able to charge the party with unlawful discrimination? And while all that is being sorted out, he will use his leadership vote to try to hinder the party’s efforts to limit Muslim immigration to Germany? Or perhaps I am making a bunch of mistaken assumptions, since I don’t know how politics works in Germany…
Perhaps some Germans might be able to enlighten…
dumbledoresasrmy says
That is distinctly possible. After all.. “War is deceit”.
Groups like the AFD and Pegida need to be very, very careful about background checking people who join.
gravenimage says
Yes–and some people who join these groups–or at least show up at rallies–also pose as Nazis to discredit them. Just repulsive.
Voytek Gagalka says
How long will take him to grasp that however great thing he did there is no exit from that decision now, unless he be willing to put his head on the “apostasy” block?
ketzel says
No surprise. People who help the less fortunate from other cultures are already enablers, even if they are “right-wing” or whatever. Someone who loves their own culture wouldn’t voluntarily spend time among rabble from a hostile culture. If I’d been there, and the AfD asked me to identify in advance who wasn’t all that pro-European, I’d point to “that guy over there, the one helping immigrants, he’s going to turn, because social workers are the type.”
StellaSaidSo says
‘…because social workers are the type.’
You’re right, ketzel.
Social workers are leaders in the expanding victim-enabling industry. Their jobs depend on a steady supply of helpless clients. I would like to see some solid evidence of the success of this ‘profession’ in facilitating the transition from dependent welfare recipient to productive citizen. So far, all we are seeing is more welfare dependence, more criminal behaviour – and more social workers making more excuses.
gravenimage says
Not every other culture is hostile. Islam certainly is, though.
Chand says
My guess is a change of heart in Wagner came from interacting with the refugees, coming across some exceptional human beings who must have gone through hell but retained their humanity, with a lot of love, forgiveness, resilience and filled with the sheer joys of being alive.
He might have sensed that some of their strength might have come from their Islamic culture. Islam might have seemed simpler and easier for him or he might have read the Koran and seen some kind of light.
He might have felt happiness at his own transformation from a rabid Muslim hater to a more compassionate human and hung on to it.
Like Hugh says: ” To do what Wagner did out of genuine belief is not impossible — strange things happen every day.”
Of course I might be wrong and Hugh’s other two reasons might be the real ones: Muslima honey or money grip.
mortimer says
Chand, he doesn’t want anyone to know the REAL REASON because, no doubt, the reason for converting is a SHAMEFUL, SORDID ONE that he cannot be proud of.
LeftisruiningCanada says

Then we had better let him know it’s been abrogated. It’s only fair.
“He might have felt happiness at his own transformation from a rabid Muslim hater to a more compassionate human and hung on to it.”
Because only rabid haters can oppose the islamization of their country. Gottcha.

Most converts to Islam don’t last more than about 19 months. They discover Islam is PROFOUNDLY INEGALITARIAN and lacking in warmth. It is a culture of people wanting to be MORE ISLAMIC THAN THOU.
Anyone who isn’t ISLAMIC ENOUGH is close to being a dirty kafir or a vile ‘hypocrite’ who should be slaughtered.

LeftisruiningCanada says

Oh yes extremely far-fetched.

Speaking to ABC Western Queensland, Rise Up Australia candidate Pam Hecht said the biggest issue facing people in the electorate of Kennedy, which Bob Katter holds by 18.3 per cent, was the conversion of Indigenous people to Islam.
”I don’t know whether people are aware, but many of the Aboriginal people in northern Australia are being targeted by Muslims and in some cases are being paid to convert to Islam,” she said, describing herself and the electorate as ”farmers . . . just ordinary everyday people”, who ”want to be free to go about our business’’.

Well thanks JD, perhaps lebel will even read some of those articles.
StellaSaidSo says
An inducement of $40,000 is not ‘far-fetched’, lebel, if the target has influence, or access to someone who has influence. Much larger sums of money have changed hands in order to buy politicians, corrupt elections, or facilitate building approvals for ‘places of worship’.
‘Reverts’ can be picked up very cheaply by recruiters, who deliberately seek out the vulnerable. A desperate drug addict will recite any mumbo-jumbo in order to relieve his cravings. The lonely will respond to anyone who shows an interest. The stupid will sign up for anything if the sales pitch is persuasive enough or the price is right.
Islam has no conscience, and no shame. If submission cannot be achieved by one means, it will use another. Buying or blackmailing or bludgeoning, it makes no difference.

I didn’t read all the comments so may be repeating a previous one. SOME of the right in Germany are Nazis. Islam hates Jews and is basically fascist. We see how well they got along in WW II when Haj Amin al-Husseini collaborated with Hitler and raised a Muslim division to fight in the Balkans. Hitler granted the Arab World honorary Aryan status.
This may have added to one of the previously mentioned issues like money, woman, blackmail…
John says
I am not a Christian, so I have no dog in the fight over whose god is real.
But Islam may, at least superficially, appeal to a simple kind of man. Most humans only care about satisfaction of their basic needs, getting sex, getting rich and getting on the top of the food chain.
Also Islam rather than soft Christianity may be more fitted to setting scores with violence.
And that may be appealing to a certain type of males or females joining nationalist or far-right movements.
It may just be, that Wagner was never into defending democracy, secularism, freedom of thought or the rights of women, and most humans aren’t either.
Islam speaks to the gut, and thas makes it more persuasive to the average stupid human.
Christianity speaks to the kindness or a higher foregiving god, and that may not be a survival advantage.

islam is definitely designed to encourage the darker side of human nature, no doubt about it.

But Islam may, at least superficially, appeal to a simple kind of man. Most humans only care about satisfaction of their basic needs, getting sex, getting rich and getting on the top of the food chain.
…………………………………
Only if one’s “simplicity” is pretty brutal and uncaring.
More:
Also Islam rather than soft Christianity may be more fitted to setting scores with violence.
…………………………………
This is certainly true.
More:
And that may be appealing to a certain type of males or females joining nationalist or far-right movements.
…………………………………
I think it depends on how you define this. If you are talking about neo-Nazis, you are certainly correct. If you just mean someone who is a patriot and cares about their nation and culture, probably not.
More:
It may just be, that Wagner was never into defending democracy, secularism, freedom of thought or the rights of women, and most humans aren’t either.
…………………………………
This may well be the case. I am not as cynical as you are, though–I think a lot of civilized people do care very much about these things. There are just a lot of people who are still in denial over the fact that Islam is a threat to these values.
More:
Islam speaks to the gut, and thas makes it more persuasive to the average stupid human.
…………………………………
This is true. The average IQ level of Muslims is quite low, and the group most attracted to Islam in the West is violent felons.
More:
Christianity speaks to the kindness or a higher foregiving god, and that may not be a survival advantage.
…………………………………
John, you can be kind without supinely rolling over for savagery. At their best, this is what culturally Judeo-Christian nations are like.
As for survival in general, it is notable that people live longer, are better fed, housed, get better medical care, and overall have a much higher standard of living and more opportunity in civilized Western nations than in Islamic hell holes. And if people do suffer misfortune, there is more likely to a social program or charity to help them than in the Muslim world.
The attraction of Islam is not survival, it is *dominance* over others. That’s why our defending ourselves is of such vital imporance.

” that may be appealing to a certain type of males or females joining nationalist or far-right movements.”
Just to be clear, Nazism was almost completely a left wing system, since Fascism is left wing in itself. “Extreme right’ has been falsely attributed to neo nazi movements because of the one less left wing aspect of their beliefs which is, as you say, nationalism.
The only people to whom fascism and and nazism look ‘far right’ are extreme lefties like communists. That they are pretty much identical in practice, though having different reasons and goals, apart from their international versus national focus, only makes it more comical.

The other name for Nazism, of course, was “National Socialism”.
The extremes of the far “right” and “left” are virtually indistinguishable.
LeftisruiningCanada says
We would have to properly define terms before that second statement could be agreed upon, because authoritarianism is not necessarily a feature of extremely right wing political ideas.
Whenever too much power accrues in one location we will tend to see very similar practical applications of that power. In that sense, any political philosophy can end up looking the same, though the reasons underlying it may differ.
As always, we see the wisdom of the founding father of the USA in their division of powers. Though they were not all Christians, they certainly reflect a Biblical standpoint on the nature of Man.

Maybe the Muslims in Gerrnany should dangle a mate also in front of Angela, with a fat check to help. Now that would be something to chat about!. Leave Wagner alone, he is just a small bean in the soup. His conversion, for whatever reason, will help others to check the level of their own faith.

If we have enough of these poisonous “beans”, it will destroy the soup. Luckily, traitors like Wagner are still a rarity in the civilized West.
Eric jones says
Maybe Mr. Wagner was contacted by an attractive Muslim woman in hijab in the German version of Facebook or Linkedin . The woman asked for contact and to be in his friend group. He could not resist and was reeled in. Men over a certain age are susceptible to this. Some men think they are Don Juan and can deal with any woman without risk. Mr. Wagner got lured in.
I myself was a target of being approached by a pretty woman in a hijab on a social media website. I never responded and the effort to lure me stopped. The work I do makes me skeptical and I am from a military family. I knew the pretty young lady in hijab was a recruitment effort. I resisted.

You made the right decision, Eric. Muslim women are active recruiters for Islam on social media.

Good for you, Eric.

Will there be more like Arthur Wagner–people who at least see part of the threat of Islam, then decide to go over to those whom they *know* are bent on destroying us? Just as there were a few from the free West who betrayed us to Fascism of Communism, there are bound to be some who betray us to Islam. May these traitors be few.
LeftisruiningCanada says
Agreed.
UNCLE VLADDI says
You forgot to mention the other, much more usual option: “BLACKMAIL.”
gravenimage says
I have a few mild embarrassments myself, like most people–*nothing* that would induce me to convert to the foul creed of Islam, though.

One consolation: being German, he’ll probably need to “submit” to circumcision. Great! I sincerely hope and pray that the pain will be unbearable, and that his stinking penis rots his insides and falls off into a sewer ditch!
