“Ms Shoma has been charged with one count of engaging in a terrorist act, with police alleging she was ‘self-radicalised.'”
How do police know that? Because the family says they’re shocked? Have police simply accepted what the family said at face-value, or have they conducted an informed and thorough investigation of what the family believes and what Momena Shoma was taught growing up?
Also, have police been to any mosques that Momena Shoma attended in Australia? Have they investigated what was taught there?
It is unlikely in the extreme that the police have investigated either the family or the mosque(s), since the attack only took place Friday afternoon. But nonetheless, they’re going on record with this nonsense that she was “self-radicalised.” It is easier to do that than to consider — even to consider! — the possibility that sympathy for the Islamic State and belief in the jihad imperative are far more widespread among Muslims in Australia than authorities would like to believe.
More on this story. “‘She’s a brilliant student’: family of alleged IS stabber shocked,” by Aisha Dow and Neelima Choahan, Sydney Morning Herald, February 11, 2018:
The family of a Bangladeshi student alleged to be behind an “Islamic State-inspired attack” in Melbourne say they are baffled by the arrest of the “brilliant student” who had received a scholarship to study in Australia.
Momena Shoma, 24, is accused of stabbing 56-year-old nurse Roger Singaravelu in the neck while he was asleep at their home in Mill Park on Friday afternoon.
Police have claimed she was wearing a burqa during the bloody attack witnessed by the man’s five-year-old daughter.
Ms Shoma has been charged with one count of engaging in a terrorist act, with police alleging she was “self-radicalised”.
The Age spoke to the woman’s family in Bangladesh as they made attempts to contact her in custody on Sunday.
Her uncle Mohammed Abdul Aziz, a senior university official in the capital, Dhaka, said the news of her arrest had come as a major shock and he was struggling to believe the allegations.
“As a family we are totally, totally devastated,” Dr Aziz said.
“We are trying to contact her and her father is trying to talk to her.”
Ms Shoma arrived in Melbourne on February 1 to study linguistics at La Trobe University, where she had been given a 25 per cent “excellence” scholarship.
She had been lodging with Mr Singaravelu for only one day when the alleged attack took place.
She wanted to become a university teacher and was previously a student at one of the top private universities in Bangladesh, North South University, her family say.
Her mother died about a year ago from diabetes and her father, a manager of an insurance company, has limited English and is reportedly devastated….
Victoria Police acting Deputy Commissioner Ross Guenther said comments made by Ms Shoma when she was interviewed by police led them to believe the incident was terrorism related.
“In the course of some disclosures in the interview it became apparent that circumstances led them to believe it was a terror attack,” he said. “That then saw the Joint Counter Terrorism Team take over.”…

The ‘Auzzies’ are actually ‘Aussies’, and for most of us, we are exceptionally well versed on Islam and all the trimmings it brings to the table. We are not brainwashed, nor are we fools, despite our laid back demeanor. We do however have a two party preferred political system, with a majority of politicians spellbound by the UN and inflicted with the Marxist “all cultures are equal” mentality.
Our media are, for the better part, engaging in a fantasy love affair with Muslims and a belief in a utopian society. They actively provide a platform for Islamists and their propaganda hijabis to shed crocodile tears and perpetuate the Islamophobia lie.
Don’t underestimate Aussies. We are fast reaching breaking point.

(From Sydney Australia) Well said “Angry Aussie” You know what is going on, I know what is going on yet why are our politicians so blind? Again I have written to my Federal MP expressing concern over “inappropriate immigration”, I am yet to receive a reply.

I’ve had a number of replies to my correspondence with our leaders. It can take weeks. I’ve no doubt they have a lot on their desk to get through. All the replies have been “motherhood” statements, vaguely comforting but with little substance. I expect nothing else. I was advised to visit the Muslim museum and go visit a mosque. I value my life too much to visit a mosque and I don’t need to know what “contributions” Muslims have made to our society. I’m not a big fan of FGM, the denigration of women, murder, gang violence and the other well-known contributions of Muslims to Australian society. I think it’s pretty simple. Would Australia be worse off if 600,000 Muslims left the country. No way! We’d go back to dealing with other pressing problems that can be solved, instead of propping up a religion that has our worst interests at heart.

Good comments and I especially think you, Monty, have summed up what my feelings about barbaric islam and Muslims are. I completely agree with you that if all the Muslims were gone from Australia it would be a better country. I want to mention something all our politicians from the major parties say over and over and which annoys the hell out of me. “Australia is the most successful multicultural society in the world.” When I hear this statement I think, well, if Australia, with all its problems with Muslims, is the “most successful” then the other nations must be hell, because Australia is being made extremely unpleasant by the actions and attitudes of its MUslim imports. And it’s a predictable outcome. But mostly I think it is lying garbage from our politicians. I wonder also if other countries’ politicians, such as in the UK, Canada, USA, also say, “we are the most successful multicultural society in the world”.

This highlights a failure in Australia’s immigration system. She could also explain the math of human value in Islam: a muslima is worth half a muslim, so what does that make a kufr male? Is a kufr male equal or greater than a muslima, or is he even less? If a kufr woman is half a kufr man, what is her value on Allah’s scale?

The West did not admit massive numbers of Nazis leading up to WWII.
The West did not admit massive numbers of Communists during the Cold War.
But now we deliberately import a totalitarian ideology that is, arguably, as bad or worse. Because it is a ‘religion’.
The issue is not Islam or Muslims. The issue is a political climate in the West that pursues the mass immigration of followers of an ideology that is the antithesis of Western values; for ‘Diversity’. Left to themselves, Muslims harm only fellow Muslims. The trouble started in the 1970s when the mass migration to the West began in earnest. Largely subsidized by Western taxpayers, and without any debate on the long term consequences.
Those consequences are becoming disturbingly obvious.

Monty says
I live in Australia and we are spared the worst of Islamic terror attacks. However, our politicians also live in denial of the root cause of the problem. The vast majority of Muslims are not going to carry out terror attacks. But at any time, any one of them could take the Quran literally and decide to carry out its instructions. We have around 600,000 Muslims, not many compared with most of the world. It is still 600,000 too many. We need just 1% to become “radicalised” (what garbage, violence is inherent in Islam) and there is an army of 6,000 determined to wreak havoc in our society. The cost of keeping watch on Muslims is enormous. Around 80 terrorist attacks have been thwarted in the last few years. This is nothing in the world wide view, but everything to the potential victims. Nothing personal, but if I had my way not one Muslim would be in this country. People are not statistics. They are entitled to live free from fear of Muslim atrocities. We have enough to deal with as it is.
StellaSaidSo says
Well said, Monty. So far, Australia has been spared the worst of Islamic terror attacks, but we should not be complacent. 600,000 Mohammedans might not sound like a lot – but in a country with a small total population, it is significant. Mohammedans breed like rabbits, and will eventually outnumber us if we do not begin constructing a rabbit-proof fence.
Shmoovie says
Agreed.
Actually 600,000 does sound like a lot; a measly one percent figure (if anyone buys that estimate) can cause enormous death and destruction.
In a country of 320 million it took less than twenty to slaughter nearly 3,000.

Much as the teachings of Islam are to be deplored, it is wrong to overlook the psychological side of things. It is not just that people are taught by their koran and so on that they should hate and seek to destroy infidels etc, but that they grow up in a disturbed climate of fear and confusion. Even muslim people who are not particularly disturbed by islamic teachings have problems when they come to Australia (where I write from) and are suddenly exposed to a totally different culture. I frequently see in muslim students to whom I teach English a serious struggle as they try to adapt. For some the struggle is as simple as ‘do I go to the mosque on Friday or play football?’ – mostly they choose football. For others, the struggle is more profound as they question their own identity.A girl like this who has stabbed someone was obviously already troubled, and arriving in an alien culture could tip such a one over the edge. It is too simplistic to attribute these things solely to ‘radicalization’, to listening and taking seriously what the koran says. In young people islam must be a factor in them becoming troubled, and it then excuses and even condones their violence. It taps into, promotes and exacerbates all that is worst in human nature! But it’s not just islam that is at fault – it is human nature!

Economist Magazine:
“EXTREMELY poor societies…provide optimal breeding grounds for disease, terrorism and conflict.”
So said Barack Obama, arguing in favour of more development aid to poor countries. Mr Obama is not alone in regarding economic development as a weapon against terrorism. Hillary Clinton, America’s secretary of state, has called development “an integral part of America’s national security policy”.
The idea that poverty could be associated with terrorism is not implausible. If acts of terror are committed by people with little to lose, then it is reasonable to expect them to be carried out disproportionately by poor, ill-educated people with dismal economic prospects.
Some terrorists certainly fit this profile. Yet the ranks of high-profile terrorism suspects also boast plenty of middle-class, well-educated people.
The would-be Times Square bomber, Faisal Shehzad, boasts an MBA and is the son of a senior Pakistani air-force officer. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who stands accused of lighting a makeshift bomb on a transatlantic flight in the so-called “underwear plot”, had a degree from University College, London, and is the son of a rich Nigerian banker. The suspected suicide-bomber in this week’s attacks in Stockholm had a degree from a British university. Are well-heeled terrorists representative or are they exceptions to the rule?
Social scientists have collected a large amount of data on the socioeconomic background of terrorists.
According to a 2008 survey of such studies by Alan Krueger of Princeton University, they have found little evidence that the typical terrorist is unusually poor or badly schooled. Claude Berrebi of the RAND Corporation compared the characteristics of suicide-bombers recruited by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the West Bank and Gaza with those of the general adult male Palestinian population. Nearly 60% of suicide-bombers had more than a high-school education, compared with less than 15% of the general population. They were less than half as likely to come from an impoverished family as an average adult man from the general population. Mr Krueger carried out a similar exercise in Lebanon by collecting biographical information for Hizbullah militants. They too proved to be better educated and less likely to be from poor families than the general population of the Shia-dominated southern areas of Lebanon from which most came.
There is also no evidence that sympathy for terrorism is greater among deprived people.
In a series of surveys carried out as part of the Pew Global Attitudes Project in 2004, adults in Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey were asked whether they believed that suicide-bombing aimed at American or other Western targets in Iraq was justified. Their answers could be broken down by the respondents’ level of education. Although the proportions varied greatly between countries (with support lowest in Turkey), more schooling usually correlated with more agreement.
Some argue that poverty could be at the root of terror even if terrorists are not themselves poor.
Anger about poverty in the countries they are from could cause richer citizens of poor countries to join terrorist organisations. This idea can be tested by looking across countries to see if there is a link between a country’s GDP per head and its propensity to produce terrorists. Mr Krueger did precisely this by looking at data on 956 terrorist events between 1997 and 2003. He found that the poorest countries, those with low literacy, or those whose economies were relatively stagnant did not produce more terrorists. When the analysis was restricted to suicide-attacks, there was a statistically significant pattern—but in the opposite direction.
Citizens of the poorest countries were the least likely to commit a suicide-attack.
The nationalities of all foreign insurgents captured in Iraq between April and October 2005 also produced no evidence that poorer countries produced more insurgents. If anything, there was weak evidence the other way.
What might explain why so many relatively well-off people from relatively well-off countries end up as terrorists?
It may be that a certain level of education makes it more likely that people will become politicised. But the kind of people that terrorist organisations demand also matters. Unlike ordinary street crime, which does tend to attract the down-and-out, terrorism is a complex activity. So terrorist organisations prefer to recruit skilled, educated people to carry out their missions. Using a database of Palestinian suicide-bombers between the years 2000 and 2005, Mr Berrebi and Harvard University’s Efraim Benmelech find that more educated suicide-bombers are assigned to attack more important targets. Such terrorists also kill more people and are less likely to fail or be caught during their attacks.
The sword is mightier with the pen —
The finding that more educated terrorists are deadlier may mean, however, that economic conditions can influence terrorism’s effectiveness.
Using data on all Palestinian suicide-attackers between 2000 and 2006, Esteban Klor of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Messrs Benmelech and Berrebi show in a new paper that the skill level of the average terrorist rises when economic conditions are poor. They reckon that high unemployment enables terror organisations in Palestine to recruit more educated, mature terrorists. So better economic conditions could blunt the effectiveness of terror attacks by reducing the average quality of the talent that terrorist organisations are able to recruit.
There are many reasons to promote economic development in poor countries but the elimination of terror is not a good one. The research on terrorists’ national origins suggested that countries which give their citizens fewer civil and political rights tend to produce more terrorists. Politics, not economics, is likely to be a more fruitful weapon in the fight against terror.

Doesn’t anyone find this odd? She’s a radicalized Muslim who was lodging with a man who wasn’t her husband or family member?
Something isn’t right here. If she came to Australia to do jihad, why would she choose to do it in such a pitiful, single-victim way that could also compromise her virginal reputation? Some Muslim parents honor-kill their daughters for less sexually suspicious behavior than that.
It’s a really strange jihad scenario for a young Muslim girl to choose.
TheBuffster says
On the other hand, it does make non-Muslims (the ones paying attention) more aware of not knowing which Muslims can be trusted. Not even a Muslima who *seems* to be Westernised enough to lodge in a house with a male stranger is a safe bet.
Of course, this doesn’t seem to me to be to Muslims’ advantage, possibly making the unbelievers wary, making them want to kick Muslims out of their communities. But I suppose anything to create strife in kaffir society helps bring that society down.
I hope our countrymen wise up fast enough.
