She seemed to be the embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of French multiculturalist Leftists: a hijab-wearing Muslima singing a song written by a famous Jewish poet. But, as seems always to be the case, there was a catch: she sang altered lyrics in Arabic that turned the song into one that proselytized for Islam:
“She said her message is one of ‘love, of peace and tolerance and the proof of this is to sing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen – a song that illustrates perfectly the message that I wish to express as an artist.’ But her Arabic-language rendition of Cohen’s song shows she took some artistic licenses with that message, according to the Tribune Juive weekly. Whereas the French-language translation of the song’s first verse was faithful to the English origin, Ibtissem proceeded to sing in Arabic a verse that stripped away its sensual language and unmistakably sexual allusions. The verse was written years ago by a singer from Kuwait, Muhamad Al Hussayn, who is known for setting Islamic proselytizing lyrics to Western pop melodies. It exchanges Cohen’s iconoclastic musings about King David’s lust for Bathsheba and female sexuality with the story of a man who was ‘surrounded by darkness’ until he found God.”
What’s more, she has a history of statements downplaying jihad terror and playing up the fiction of Muslim victimhood in France as well as in Israel. Once again we see that sentiments that are supposed to be held only by a “tiny minority of extremists” are much more common among Muslims than multiculturalist Leftists would like to admit.
Here is Mennel singing “Hallelujah”:
And here is the real thing:
“Everyone loved this French-Muslim singer’s Leonard Cohen cover. Then they read her Facebook posts.,” by Cnaan Liphshiz, JTA, February 7, 2018:
(JTA) — In a deeply divided nation that is still reeling from a toxic presidential election last spring, as well as jihadist and racist attacks, Mennel Ibtissem’s performances offered a rare vision of hope.
The blue-eyed Muslim woman sang Arabic and French-language renditions of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on national television in France while wearing a head cover. She was a favorite on the French edition of “The Voice” talent and reality show, seeming to embody the values of coexistence and tolerance in a country with a notorious integration problem.
But in a repeat of recent scandals involving ambassadors for diversity in Europe, Ibtissem’s social media activity showed a different side of her — one that spread pro-Palestinian propaganda, conspiracy theories and accusations that the French state, not jihadists, is responsible for terrorism.
It was that last remark, posted by the 23-year-old singer on social media in 2016, that prompted the TF1 television network to consider disqualifying Ibtissem from the show.
“We cannot keep on the show a person who made illegal statements,“ a network spokesman told television host and journalist Jean-Marc Morandini on Tuesday.
In her 2016 remarks Ibtissem, the show’s first contender to perform while wearing a Muslim head covering, wrote following the murder of a priest in Saint-Etienne-du Rouvray by an Islamist that “the real terrorist[s] are our government.”
The same year, one day after a jihadist terrorist attack in Nice in which 86 people died, she seemed to peddle a popular conspiracy theory that Muslims are being framed for false-flag attacks.
“It’s becoming a routine: An attack each week!! And sure enough, the ‘terrorist’ takes with him his identity CARD. Of course, when planning a dirty you always take papers! #DontTakeUsForFools,” she wrote on Facebook.
In a separate post in 2016, Ibtissem said her country has “a shitty society,” that she is “sick of the French system” and that she’s “eager to get the hell out of here.”
Henda Ayari, a French feminist and author who grew up in a Muslim family, said L’Affaire Mennel indicates an eagerness in the French media and beyond to seek the semblance of tolerance rather than the real thing.
“Wearing a veil does not make one a saint, modesty needs no veil, beauty needs no pretty face to shine, external beauty does not mean internal one. Never rely on appearances, they’re deceiving,” Ayari wrote Tuesday on Twitter about Ibtissem….
BNVCA also noted a 2015 video of a song she wrote and performed titled “Smile Palestine,” in which she sings of “a life of despair” for the Palestinians amid “slaughter of mothers, fathers, little sisters and little brothers.”
Reacting to the controversy Ibtissem, an English teacher in training who was born in France to a Syrian father and an Algerian mother, wrote on Facebook that her statements about terrorism had been “taken out of context” and “do not reflect any of my views.”
She did not attempt to re-contextualize her remarks, but added that she was born in France.
“I love my country, and of course I wholeheartedly condemn terrorism, which was the reason for my fury: How can you imagine that I would defend the indefensible!” Ibtissem wrote.
She said her message is one of “love, of peace and tolerance and the proof of this is to sing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen – a song that illustrates perfectly the message that I wish to express as an artist.”
But her Arabic-language rendition of Cohen’s song shows she took some artistic licenses with that message, according to the Tribune Juive weekly.
It exchanges Cohen’s iconoclastic musings about King David’s lust for Bathsheba and female sexuality with the story of a man who was “surrounded by darkness” until he found God.
A Tribune Juive author, in an unsigned op-ed, wrote that the altered version went to the heart of the controversy surrounding Ibtissem.
“To the uninitiated French public, Mennel began to sing a poetic story drawing on Psalms and King David, who ruled a Jewish kingdom in Jerusalem,” the op-ed read. “But to her many followers who speak Arabic, this artist had a very different religious message.”

Flavius Claudius Iulianus says
Sorry, I’m really sensitive to bad pitch and Cohen’s singing drives me crazy. What’s worse is this song has been so over-covered that it has become a parody of itself. I’m half relieved that someone has unintentionally destroyed it.
gravenimage says
*Really*, Flavius? You are happy to see a popular song used to further the cause of Islam?
Even if I had no fondness for this song or its creator–as is true with some songs–I would have no desire to see them perverted by Muslims for use as Da’wa.
Flavius Claudius Iulianus says
I know of at least a half a dozen top musicians who refuse to back a vocalist on it. It is built using an over-used chord progression and for many musicians it has overstayed its welcome. Let it go into the repertory and we’ll see it again in fifty years, maybe.
For me, Cohen is not a vocalist but rather a poet who very cleverly understood that as a poet in North American culture, he would be ignored, so he sang his poems. It is every artist’s duty to work hard to make their work known, and for that I salute him. (I give him credit, he all but openly admitted that he couldn’t sing.)
Don’t ask me what I think of his poetry.
As far as using this for da’wa:
if they changed the lyrics then they must get permission from the author or their estate. This is the law (you cannot materially alter the lyrics of a song if you cover it – Al Yankovic must always get permission to spoof a song!) and I believe France is signed on to international copyright law. So either they (singer and producers) have violated the law and need to be litigated, or Cohen’s estate foolishly gave permission.
gravenimage says
Flavius, the wonderful thing about the West is that we can freely disagree.
StellaSaidSo says
I agree, Flavius, Leonard Cohen, in his old age at least, was definitely not a singer. But, like Bob Dylan, he was a poet who became a voice for his times, and those of us who grew up with him will always be more forgiving than those who have come along since.
Re the liberties taken with the lyrics by the jihadi chanteuse, I hope that Lorca Cohen has adequately protected her father’s estate, and that she does not hesitate to sue the hijab off the obnoxious Ms Ibtissem.
gravenimage says
And Flavius, you are technically right about getting permission from the artist to use a song–but only if it is used commercially.
As for Weird Al, he is exempt because his songs are parodies. Many of the artists he spoofs actually get a kick out of his work–his spoofs are not mean spirited.
Using an artist’s work to try to destroy the cultre that allowed its creation is a rather different matter, though…
6woods says
I’m sorry Leonard Cohen offends your oh-so-sensitive ears, but I think you’re missing the point.
The point, for me is that a hypocritical taqqiya-spewing muslim is co-opting a song (muhammad said allah wanted to pour molten lead into musicians’ ears) written by a Jew (we all know how the impotent allah feels about Jews).
Even if I didn’t love Cohen’s music (I do), I would find it offensive that it’s being cynically used to spread lies and dawa.

I once had an argument with a Muslim who tried to tell me what brilliant architects Muslims are.

gravenimage says
Yes, Stella–it always angers me when Hagia Sophia is cited as “Islamic architecture”. The Muslims didn’t get their hands on it until they invaded Constantinople then slaughtered all the priests, nuns, women, children, and old people taking sanctuary in the cathedral.
For over a thousand years, Hagia Sophia was Christendom’s greatest cathedral.
I even saw a children’s book on Islamic architecture that featured Hagia Sophia on its cover. Just perverse ignorance. And from Muslims this is usually not ignorance but deliberate Taqiyya.

France: Hijabbed Muslim singer retools Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” with Islamic proselytizing lyrics
……………………….
Is there nothing that Muslims won’t steal and ruin?
This is one of my favorite songs.
While I love the original version by the creator Leonard Cohen, my very favorite is the workld-weary, sad, yet ultimately soaring and transcendent version by Rufus Wainwright:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBo-n_17XU0
This version was used on the film Shrek.
The irony, of course, is that while Mulsims like Ibtissem will use Western art to further the cause of Islam, if it is ever fully in ascendancy, that will be an end to music.
It will also be an end to its creators. Leonard Cohen–an artist and a Jew–would not fare well under Islam. Nor would Rufus Wainright–an artist and a gay man.
Save Europe says
Yes. It was deliberately provocative on two fronts – an attempt to annoy Christians, and at the same time have a ‘dig’ at a Jewish man.
Gen Jones says
Absolutely Graven!
I love Rufus’ version but I think Jeff Buckley’s version is my favorite.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WIF4_Sm-rgQ
And used so effectively in the film Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train.
John Cale of the Velvet Underground has a wonderful version and apparently was the person who shaped Cohen’s lyrics into the song we love today.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AdNdncBTc-Q
It’s a song about lust and maybe love. How we surrender to it at great cost. King David loses his righteousness over Bathsheba, Samson loses his strength to Delilah. Yet hallelujah is heard from their lips at the moment of surrender. It’s a paradox, powerful male energy recognizing the need for the possibly dangerous feminine energy. The battle between the flesh and the spirit each with something sacred and all consuming. A pagan idea that infuses both Judaism and Christianity that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Islam which despises the female.
Most telling is the lyric “You don’t really care for music do ya?”
Music is haram in Islam. They “don’t really care for” it. They don’t get it. So this The Voice performance is parody and propaganda. You can tell the singer is saying the English words phonetically, not understanding them the way even an opera singer understands Italian or German lyrics they interpret. The whole thing is vile and I hope the initial reaction of the judges is overturned when they realize they were duped.
gravenimage says
Thanks, Gen. I also love Jeff Buckley’s version–and I had not listened to John Cale’s version for quite some time. Thanks for the links.
Yes–this song is quite complex. I could go on at length about the allusions to David and Bathsheba and Sampson and Delilah and the rest.
I think the basic message though, is that human love–as imperfect and even occasionally perverse as it can be, it ultimately both a terrible risk and a great celebration–even a Hallelujah to God.
Noteably, there are no great Muslim love stories, either tragic or life-affirming. Basically, Islam is a loveless creed–something else that is truly ugly about it.
This Muslimah using this song could not be more perverse.
And Gen, great to see you posting again–hope you are well.
Gen Jones says
Thanks Graven, I’m well just busy lately. I always enjoy reading your comments even if I don’t get time to reply. Take care my dear.

“Dance Me to the End of Love” is perhaps Leonard Cohen’s most beautiful and powerful song–and that, in a repertoire of powerful work. This was written about the Holocaust, but works as an elegy far beyond that atrocity.
Wellington says
The overall deceit aside here (big “aside” I know but then Islam is “superb” at deceit, all six kinds per Islam), how hypocritical the Islamic world is in decrying open sexuality all the while going on and on about the 72 virgins rot in the next world and the right to rape non-Muslim women per Suras 4, 23, 33 and 70 in this world (yes, all that Islamic garbage about “captives of the right hand”).
So, my principal question respecting this particular “story” is: Has this young Muslima herself been subjected to FGM and, if not, why not? Yes, is her clitoris in tact and, if so, how does she square this with “the Islamic record?” If not in tact, then why would she ever even remotely defend this creed which seeks to strip women of sexual pleasure, never mind all the other negatives that come with FGM, for instance difficulty in urination?
Sorry to be so graphic here but sometimes, when countering malevolence, risking being graphic takes second place to the truth, the truth being something Islam knows very little to nothing about.
Phil Copson says
Not so much about “stripping women of sexual pleasure” as a primitive way of keeping women “faithful” is at the root of it. Somebody who doesn’t enjoy sex won’t seek other sexual partners, so the male doesn’t risk spending his time raising another man’s progeny.
This is why some wild animals routinely kill the off-spring of a defeated rival when taking over his mate and his territory.
FGM is essentially an expression of instinctive, atavistic, pre-human behaviour justified and codified by barbarian cultures.

This is the pity. There are tremendously gifted Muslims that came to the West since the 1950’s for opportunity. They set the more aggressive attitudes of Muhammad aside and made contributions with the freedom not given them by Islamic nations.
There are truly contributing Muslimas – engineers, doctors, etc and most do not wear hijabs or their religion upon their manner of dress. Nor do they carry some notion of ruling the world.
But, alas, some cannot shake off the tribalness of Islam. Here in the US, creating a lottery system, changed the distribution of incoming talent to average and brought too many jihad-oriented Muslims. Two oceans have limited the US incursion to something manageable if future immigration is based on skills.
It may be too late for Europe to avoid civil unrest after taking in huge numbers of unskilled immigrants that are a significant fraction of the population of Germany, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, etc.

Condemns terrorism, without telling us what it is. Since she seems to think that every jihad attack is probably a false flag, and that of course anything done to a muslim by an unbeliever is wrong, especially in Israel, much we can safely assume that ‘terrorism’, to this girl, is something only the kuffar get up to.

My father adored Leonard Cohen and especially loved his take on Hallelujah. So much so, that it was the song we played as he was interred at the cemetery during his funeral. I remember crouching by the side of the gravesite, sobbing my eyes out (my Dad committed suicide, so it was a very unexpected death and a hard funeral to get through), I was honestly a thin inch from uncontrolled hysteria.
Without a doubt, the hardest day of my life and to this day, I start to cry all over again whenever I hear the song. I just can’t do it anymore, it’s too hard. Essentially, this song means far too much to me.
So to see that filthy pile of excrement quite literally butcher such an extraordinarily beautiful song that happens to have such intense, personal meaning to me, infuriates me deeply. Actually, I can’t find the appropriate words to describe the pure fury I feel right now over this.
In fairness, just because this was my experience with that song doesn’t mean that someone else cannot come along and cover it. I accept that. But its just far too close to home for me, to be remotely tolerant of that vile little devil taking such a meaningful song and butchering it to suit her filthy, sickening, obscene beliefs.
It’s probably a good thing that she’s Muslim. After all, her very own religion dictates that because she was born a female, she is most likely to end up burning in agony in hell, for eternity. So at least there’s that comfort – knowing that her own faith tells her that she’s got high odds of burning in agony for eternity (unless her God decides to swoop down and select her from the screaming masses, and become a permanent sex slave for some violent, sadistic jihadist). Either eternity for her, is completely suitable, as far as I’m concerned.
I just cannot find it within me, to be remotely objective, calm or tolerant in any way, after reading this article.

As for the ‘French Muslims’, you jest, surely! 🙂 There is no such thing as a French Muslim or an American Muslim or Australian Muslim. You can have French people, Americans, and Australians- and you can have Muslims. Honestly, more fool me for even opening this article, last night. I was having a great night, home from work, took the dog to the beach for a swim, came back, had dinner and was settling in with a rare glass of scotch (I just got my hands on some red rye special reserve from Johnnie Walker) – and I saw the headline for this article.
I thought to myself ‘Come on Sarah, don’t even open it, you know you’re just going to rage type and end up miserable afterward’. But of course, I never listen to myself when I’m being sensible! So I read it, I commented, and then I wound up sitting there, listening to the Cohen version for the first time in a very very long time and cried like a fool for a long time.
