Jihad Watch

Exposing the role that Islamic jihad theology and ideology play in the modern global conflicts

Twitter labels photo of Iranian woman without hijab “sensitive material”

Feb 5, 2018 5:00 pm By Robert Spencer

Earlier today I retweeted this tweet from Jerry Coyne:

Shortly thereafter, a Jihad Watch reader sent me a screenshot showing how my retweet showed up for him:

Twitter, like Facebook, seems determined to implement Sharia norms regarding speech.

This young lady is extremely brave. She ranks with the young man who challenged a tank in Tiananamen Square in China.

Exactly right. We are offending Islamic “sensitivities” by supporting real feminists who are literally risking their lives fighting against the real war on women. “Sensitive media” indeed.

This is why I will not sign up for Twitter or Facebook. I will not support leftist and Islamic based thought policing, which is what you get from Twitter and Facebook. Further, the narrow minded leftist minions at Twitter and Facebook would be the first to report to any government those messages that they believe warrant prosecution for hate speech crimes. I would expect that they routinely compile message and save dossiers on their targets for that purpose. If they do not now, soon enough they will. They cannot help themselves in this way.

They are a bastion of totalitarian enablers.

    • mike9a says

      Feb 5, 2018 at 5:37 pm

Bill, I agree with you 100%, and I am not on any of those platforms but I am thinking to join! RS has to have a platform that reaches mentally challenged. That is what they want, only one that agrees with them and their thought police. Imagine twitter and the rest without RS? I think we need to join all those junk platforms and overwhelm, or at least force them to update their algorithms more often and keep the mos thought police busy! The more Tpolice is busy the more they are exposed.

      • gravenimage says

The more good people there are on these platforms the harder it will be for them to be “policed”.

        • Bill says

          Feb 5, 2018 at 8:06 pm

The growth in computer capacity and capability is making it more and more possible for them to assess and control all information on their platform. There is no overwhelming them. Twitter has already been exposed for messing up the President’s account and a willingness to use all his Twitter communication against him. If they are prepared to do it to him, they will have no problem turning in the average conservative for hate speech prosecution as it suits them. I am not volunteering for that treatment.

What they really need is competition. They have no incentive to be honest without it. Right now, there is none — so they do as they please.

  6. Wellington says

    Feb 5, 2018 at 5:52 pm

    I don’t use Twitter. I don’t use Facebook.

No one who cherishes liberty should (I might make an exception for President Trump re Twitter because this is a way he has of getting truth across and, as a bonus, driving lefties crazy) since these are outlets for the exculpation of a lot of rot, with Islam, this entire damn religion, deserving of the “top spot” here.

Twitter is a collective coward. Facebook too. Don’t use them. Rather, do you your best to denigrate them by way of other outlets (like Jihad Watch, your local newspaper, talk radio, with friends and family, etc.), with the ultimate goal in mind of these deficiencies eventually being placed on the margins of society, which is where Islam should, of course, be placed too.

Excuse making for evil is NEVER a positive. Here Twitter and Facebook, in a sensible court of public opinion, as opposed to a true legal court where strict rules of law should and must apply, are guilty of aiding malevolence. Yes, never underestimate that unofficial “court of public opinion.” It can often times do far more good than any official court of law.

Might as well toss Google into that lot, as well.

Self-appointed demigods Tristan Harris and his ilk censor and exclude search results and YouTube search results critical of this damned religion. They arrogantly declare that they are capable to shape people’s choices and decide what people are going to think for them, in addition to the all of the tracking and data-mining activities.

I’m guessing duckduckgo is a good alternative?

      • WorkingClassPost says

        Feb 5, 2018 at 7:45 pm

Who knows for sure. I use DDG mostly, but they probably get their results from Google or similar.

Worst part is the Goog started out with such lofty ideals – Destroy Microsoft’s monopoly – yet they are now almost as bad.

The important thing to remember is that there is improvement.

Microsoft were already engaged in rewriting history with Encarta the alternative encyclopaedia. It was Google and Wikipedia which which put a stop to that project, so we must trust that this latest monopoly will also meet it’s match.

No one said it would be easy.

    • Savvy Kafir says

      Feb 5, 2018 at 7:31 pm

A better approach is for all counter-jihadis & critics of Islam to use Twitter and Facebook any way we see fit, and frustrate the Thought Police by overwhelming them with sheer numbers & volume of material.

If you despise the politically-correct idiots who own Twitter, Facebook, and Google, you can take a mischievous pleasure in using their platforms to publicly & honestly address the ONE issue we are most strictly forbidden to discuss truthfully: Islam.

Use the weapons of these clueless social justice warriors to fight the spread of Islam, and to promote common sense, candor, and an appreciation of Western culture & Western civilization.

      • WorkingClassPost says

Problem is that they’ve already cottoned onto this tactic, and have automated processes for ‘shadow banning@ such acounts, so that you don’t even realise you’re being excluled:-

        • Wellington says

          Feb 5, 2018 at 8:44 pm

Indeed, and why it is optimal not to work within these crushers of freedom (though an understandable but ultimately wrong approach) but rather to shun them and seek other outlets, all the while they become only the voice of those intent upon eradicating freedom.

Sometimes life leaves you with only bad options and so you are forced to choose the least bad option. I would argue having nothing to do with Facebook, Twitter, et al. is the least bad option.

          Exactly.
In the case of shadow banning, we are completely outmaneuvered, and entirely unaware of it at the same time, as Robert (I believe) reported recently.
These PC dhimmies can outmatch us at will on their own platforms. We must look elsewhere, I’m afraid, or organize better and take legal action.

    • LeftisruiningCanada says

      Feb 5, 2018 at 7:01 pm

      Yes, that’s it.

All oppressive regimes work on changing the outside of Man in the belief that this will also change the inside. It is a sign of at best Man’s fallen imago Dei, and at worst the signature of satan, both of which offer inverted imitations of God’s unique ability to change us on the inside, which then naturally changes the outside.

The former always breeds violence and death. The latter, peace and life.

From a Christian perspective, what you say is instructive.

In the NT, the head is a symbol for Christ and God. Removing the head, in this context, is a direct attack and rejection of the very same.

Nothing could describe islam better imho.

        • Gjallarhornet says

          Feb 6, 2018 at 5:21 pm

If you want to know what islams plans for the left are, study what they did to the left shortly after the revolution in islam, which originated NOT as an islamic revolution, but as something more pluralistic. No matter, the islamists soon killed of everybody else.

The process is described in detail in V.S. Naipaul’s book ‘Among the believers’. The left is useful for islam to a certain point, but then … Why does not more gays for example ask themselves the question :”If these people gain power – what will happen to me?”?

        • gravenimage says

          Feb 6, 2018 at 6:11 pm

And Gjallarhornet, just look at what the Mullahs did to the Iranian Communist Tudeh Party after they had consolidated their power. They arrested, tortured, and executed these poor fools, many of whom went to their deaths unable to understand why the Mullahs turned on them when they supported the “revolution”.

A good–but very harrowing–book is Howshang Asadi’s “Letters to My Torturer”.

Very interesting connection. I’m reminded of the uniforms worn under Chairman Mao, the dress codes of NK (women may not wear pants, only dresses and skirts), KSA, Singapore, etc. And the general insistence of conformity of thought and behavior that goes along with that outward conformity in authoritarian regimes.

    • LeftisruiningCanada says

Is there another way to understand this?

By classifying these images as ‘sensitive’, in the context of entire western world’s opinion of seeing a woman’s hair, is it not drawing attention to the bizarre state of affairs in Iran?

Twitter probably don’t mean it like that, but you never know. I wonder who decides these things at the company.
