The movie Black Panther became “the biggest non-sequel and non-ensemble superhero flick of all time,” nearing $900 million at the box office. It has not, however, escaped criticism: it was deemed by many (see here, here and here) to be “Islamophobic.” Why? Because it allegedly depicts Muslim men to be barbaric. The movie features a convoy of trucks with female abductees wearing hijabs against their will (reminiscent of Boko Haram and the Islamic State). When the women are freed, they shed their enforced hijabs (as we have seen in areas recaptured from the Islamic State, and in the recent hijab protests by courageous women in Iran).
In fact:
The scene inadvertently reinforces what colonial studies experts such as University of Toronto Professor Sherene Razack call the stereotypes of the barbaric Muslim man, oppressed Muslim woman and imperilled non-Muslim.
In Razack’s odd world, it must be the colonialists who are to blame for mass rapes across Europe, the ongoing Muslim rape gang activity in the UK, the brutality against women for uncovering their heads in Iran, child brides, the common practice of raping little boys in Afghanistan and Pakistan, violent no-go zones, shariah patrols, etc. One important fact, since the movie depicts black people in a positive light: it is Muslims who still hold black slaves, long after colonialists abandoned the practice, and Muslims were integral to the practice of slavery in the West.
Perhaps the colonialists also told the late Supreme Leader and Grand Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran (who ruled between 1979 and 1989) to write — in his book Tahrirolvasyleh — this horrific statement:
A man can quench his sexual lusts with a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate. Sodomizing the baby is halal (allowed by Sharia). If the man penetrates and damages the child, then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl, however, does not count as one of his four permanent wives…It is better for a girl to marry when her menstruation starts, and at her husband’s house rather than her father’s home. Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.
Anyone who addresses the atrocities committed in the name of Islam is tarred as “Islamophobic.” The prevalence of the madness presented in the article below and from the likes of Sherene Razack is one reason the West is losing the war against the global jihad.
The victimology “Islamophobia” canard is insistently propagated by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Muslim Brotherhood-linked pressure groups in the West. They are the Ministers of Propaganda among us, akin to the Third Reich Minister of Propaganda Josef Goebbels.
“Is Black Panther Islamophobic?,” by Faisal Kutty, Middle East Eye, February 27, 2018:
“Wallahi (by God) I will shoot her right now,” says the man, obviously Muslim from his Middle Eastern headgear, as he places a gun to a girl’s head. Without spoiling the movie Black Panther for those who have not seen it yet, this is part of a scene in which the soon-to-be king attacks a convoy of trucks carrying abducted women.
The women are all wearing hijab (headscarves) against their will. As soon as the girls are “liberated”, they remove their headscarves.
The scene inadvertently reinforces what colonial studies experts such as University of Toronto Professor Sherene Razack call the stereotypes of the barbaric Muslim man, oppressed Muslim woman and imperilled non-Muslim.
Unintentional boost to Islamophobia
Black Panther is a great movie. The glowing reviews and box office collections confirm this. I don’t usually rush off to see new movies, but this one was different. I looked forward to it, not only because of the hype, but more so because after 42 and Marshall, Chadwick Boseman is my favourite actor.
I hate to rain on the parade, but it’s hard to remain silent in the face of the not-so-subtle but – I can only assume – unintentional boost to Islamophobia.
No, I don’t expect only positive portrayals of Muslims in movies, because that would be false. And I am not claiming that the movie bashes Islam. But it does contribute to, and reinforce, the poor and stereotypical views of Islam and Muslims.
At the risk of sounding insensitive to the longing of the black community for a worthy portrayal, this movie joins many others in normalising a stereotypical depiction of Muslims.
As Sami Aziz, the Muslim Chaplain at Wesleyan University notes, “Black Panther continues the trend of hundreds of movies in depicting Muslims as evil, bloodthirsty, sexual predators…” In classic Hollywood fashion, the bad guys are Muslims again!
Prevalent negative narrative
There are three religions portrayed in the movie, albeit as an aside. Two are fictitious religions, while the third is Islam.
As a keen observer of international affairs, it was clear to me that the scene above was a reference to Boko Haram, the terrorist group sullying Islam and wreaking havoc especially in Nigeria.
The scene is undoubtedly one depicting the freeing of girls – many Christian – kidnaped by Boko Haram……

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE IN A VERY APPROPRIATE CONTEXT ! ! ! By the way — I have recommended this terrific video (by Dr. David Wood) several times here on Jihad Watch, but this is a perfect time to mention it again:
“Muhammad — The White Prophet With Black Slaves”. Runs under 10 minutes, contains even more citations than usual, has David’s puckish wit, and ends with him giving a huge dose of deservedly contemptuous derision for the oodles of humans who are ALWAYS PUT THE BLAME ON WHITEYS for slavery.
jihad3tracker says
THIS IS ANOTHER EXCELLENT COUNTER-JIHAD AMERICAN — Dr. Bill Warner, at www [dot] politicalislam [dot] com. He is so “low profile” that the many videos in his arsenal of truth are often not seen.
I highly recommend everyone reading this to spend a bit of time at the website I included above, and select a few for viewing then our busy schedules permit it. Most run a very convenient 4 or 5 minutes. Send the titles along to your STILL CLUELESS FAMILY, FRIENDS, CLERGY, AND ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES.
Especially those at the COUNT and STATE level, where they are somewhat more responsive to constituents. Even if they are hopelessly leftist Democrats, at least your email will put them on notice that some people in their states understand, as www [dot] barenakedislam [dot] com writes in its homepage slogan:
“iT’S NOT ISLAMOPHOBIA IF THEY REALLY ARE TRYING TO KILL YOU”.
CRUSADER says
Thanks. It’s always important to reiterate the great David Wood and the incomparable Dr Bill Warner. Good work. Important work.
Indeed. Equating “Muslims” as the unfair target is idiotic. Most of these Muslims that people feel are unfairly targeted aren’t the Jihadists, they aren’t the kinetic terrorists of Islam who are the actual bad guys referenced in this movie (which I haven’t seen, but only read about)….
Still waiting to know the definition of a “good” Muslim, actually. All we hear is that they exist.
And that they are unfairly persecuted.

Reading the Wikipedia entry on Sherene Razack is like reading a parody of every trope about the racist left. If she stubs her toe, she blames “white men.” Don’t bother waiting for the day she (seriously) includes non-western colonialism into her “studies.”
John Armitage says
I never hear about anyone getting called out for reinforcing a stereotype of white men being privileged! Or racist, or imperialist. Or, indeed, the progenitor of all evil in the world! This, even in the face of all evidence to the contrary, with racist, slave-owning empires having existed on all continents (except Antarctica, before the pedants have a field day) for thousands of years before any European empire. Go figure.

If showing this in a movie is such a problem and apparently it reinforces islamaphobia then what is it when the same exact thing actually happens in the thing l call the real world!?!
Vic says
Exactly, RTFT. It’s like taking the Daily Breaking News segment of ISIS/Boko Haram committing atrocities and making a movie out of it. I would think that the terrorists would be delighted by the propaganda because the depictions conform exactly to Islamic teaching. Certainly the videos they have posted are just as gruesome.
The critics are just sore because the Muslim terrorists in the movie didn’t win and are not presented as performing an Honorable Jihad in the name of allah. If that were the case, they would be raving about it.
CRUSADER says
Isn’t it great that the movie is so popular though?
It’s as if subconsciously there is agreement in the audience.

Dear Aziz/Radack;
I watch few modern films* but I agree that I have never seen a film portraying the Ahmadi, the Amish, the Animists, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Janeites, Jews, Scientologists, Sikhs, Yazidi, Zoroastrians etc behaving in this way on the grounds that they have divine permission to do it. I wonder why this could be ? What do you think ?
*on the grounds that they are typically charmless garbage with a mass of mega-budget special effects, a witless story-line – (often deliberately untruthful – witness the entirely fictitious scenes in “Darkest Hour” in which Churchill is portrayed as being so stupid that he didn’t realise that the invasion of France was anything much to worry about, and so weak-minded that he could hardly string a sentence together, and eventually had to be told what to do by a bunch of “Cor-blimey-if-it-aint-Mr-Churchill-‘imself-in-person” travellers on the London Underground) – and dialogue written for 10-year olds).

This was just the pen character we sometimes turn into when we are writing whos was talking. And – as usual – this pen creature dabbled in moors and whims that would hurt the jihadist in his entrails.
On the other hand, I would recommend bringing your date to an islampohobic movie for all who are dating though. She likes the film? She gets the message in the film? She prefares going with you to movies where jihadis are hammered? She’s a keeper!

I’m surprised Linda Sarsour wasn’t cast in the movie.
After all,she has described herself as a “woman of color”.
If having a pallid, deathly white visage constitutes color, then sure…let’s all go along with that delusion.
Is white the new black?
There must be roles made available for devout muslim “women of color” like Linda:witches, demons, pale faced zombies…otherwise it is being racist and terribly islamophobic isn’t it?
MFritz says
Let’s see…
– this film empowers blacks, because it shows a super-civilisation run only by black people
– this is a pro-Trump-film, because it quotes a number of Trump’s statements and ideals (up to and including building a wall and not tolerating illegal immigration)
– this is a racist film, because it shows a racially segregated nation
– this is a fascist film, because the villain, who wants to purge all of humanity, gets more screen time and is far more interesting than the hero
And now it’s also “islamophobic”? Still waiting for the feminazis to claim there aren’t ENOUGH women in “strong roles” in it…
You know, this is only… a movie adapted from a comic. And not even a very good one at that.

You must not have actually seen the movie. There are plenty of Asians. A critical scene in the plot takes place in Busan, Korea; the new King T’challa (sp?) and his bodyguards (who are women, BTW) enter a casino staffed and patronized by Korean/Asian/Chinese customers–as well as a few whites. The casino’s private entrance is staffed by a Korean woman who sells food-to-go and her (?) son, who acts as bouncer.
Plenty of Asians, plenty of strong women–both physically strong and of strong character, plus black (and white) men who are on the side of Good and a few on the side of Bad.
For a comic-book-based movie, it actually has some good things to say about humanity. Be sure you stay through the credits!
IMO, the capital of Wakanda was put together by ILM after making the design of the city a project for 4th/5th-year students of architecture. There’s some wild stuff in the city, but also some great design ideas.

Cynthia in California says
France has banned the veiling of the face in public. France also banned the wearing of religious “symbols”; I don’t know if wearing a cross under your clothes, the chain being visible, is against the law in France. It was maybe three or so years ago?
Canada *did* have a law against being photographed in a niqab for driver’s license and other official identification; given their recent hard swing in favor of Muslims, heaven only knows about IDs while wearing a niqab.

It’s such a pity most of our moviemakers have been fooled or frightened into refusing to tell *truthful* stories about Islam and its depredations.
Because the stories from the past 1400 years of Infidel self-defence against jihad contain some very dramatic episodes, whether defeats (fall of Constantinople being the most shattering) or …victories – notably, for the West, Charles Martel at Tours/ Poitiers in 732, then the Spanish reconquista (many dramatic episodes), Malta 1565, Lepanto 1571, and of course, the Gates of Vienna, 1683, but *also* the campaign that crushed the Barbary Pirates; and later on, Beersheba in 1917 (followed by the liberation of Jerusalem, and much of historic eretz Yisroel from Muslim rule), and the victories of Israel in 1948, 1967, 1973, and also Indian victories when assailed by Islamic Pakistan (and, longer ago, the victories of people like Shivaji, and of some of the Sikh resisters against Islam).
If people want to make films about black infidels vs Islam, well, there is – in the spiritual realm – the life story of Saint Josephina Bakhita of Sudan, that cries out for full-on jazz-rock-blues-soul musical treatment, and there are also, surely, some great stories to be unearthed from the history of Ethiopia/ Abyssinia’s just-barely-survival as a Christian nation in the midst of a roiling, blood-drenched sea of Islam.
