Sally Magnusson, author of the just-published The Sealwoman’s Gift, has given us a story which takes an historical event — a Muslim raid on an Icelandic village in 1627 during which 400 Icelanders were seized and brought back as slaves to Algiers — and from this core of truth weaves a fantastic tale that lovers of romance novels may enjoy, but lovers of the truth, on the other hand, will find appalling..
The main protagonist is Asta, an Icelandic woman who with her husband Olafur, a parson, and their three children (the third is born on the privateers’ ship, in conditions of utter filth) is taken to Algiers, where they are all enslaved, she to become part of the harem of Cilleby, a rich Arab, while her two daughters disappear into other harems, and her young son similarly is separated from her, having been bought, raped, and converted to Islam by his new master. He will ultimately become a Muslim raider himself. Her husband, too, becomes a slave in one of the bagnios (slave-houses), and after years of captivity he is sent by the bey of Algiers to obtain a ransom for himself and his wife from the King of Denmark (Iceland then being a Danish possession), which he does indeed obtain, and Olafur and Asta return to Iceland, their three children left behind, to their various fates, in Algiers.
A great deal of the book is devoted to descriptions of their surroundings. Iceland is cold and miserable, while in Algiers everything is sunny and lush, in sharp contrast to frigid Iceland, and Asta gradually succumbs to this sensual luxuriance in the harem. A reviewer gushes: “We can smell the spiced perfumes of the roof garden harem in Algiers; the turf and mud of Iceland’s bleak coastline; feel the caress of silks, and the slice of frozen sea winds cutting across chapped cheeks.” Naturally Asta prefers the “spiced perfumes of the roof garden harem” to the “turf and mud of Iceland’s bleak coastline,” and “the caress of silks” to the “frozen sea winds cutting across chapped cheeks.”
She fashions stories from Icelandic sagas and folk tales, especially those about a fabled “Sealwoman” (hence the novel’s title), telling them to other women in the harem (one is prompted to ask: in what language?) and to her master Cilleby, for whom she is developing a passion, and he, it seems, is becoming ever fonder of her.
The real treatment of Christian slaves in Algiers is scandalously scanted in this fable. We are never told that slaves were so badly treated that, despite the threat of endless beatings if they tried to escape, they continued to take the risk. They made repeated efforts to flee their cruel masters, and seldom succeeded. Among those who tried to escape was the most famous of all Christian “Algerine” slaves, Miguel de Cervantes, who spent five years (1575-1580) as the slave of a convert to Islam, Hassan Veneziano, who during three of those years (1577-1580) was the regent of Algiers. Cervantes made four attempts to escape, and never forgot the brutal treatment he endured, allusions to which can be found in such episodes as “The Captive’s Tale,” in Don Quixote. Had he not finally been ransomed and returned to Spain, but instead made to spend the rest of his life as a slave in Algiers, the course of Western literature might have been different.
The horrors of slave-life in Algiers were well-known to Europeans (but are not, apparently, to Sally Magnusson), and were depicted in popular prints, such as this British print from 1815:
“Captain Croker horror stricken at Algiers, on witnessing the Miseries of the Christian Slaves chain’d & in Irons driven home after labour by Infidels with large Whips.” (The “Infidels with large whips” were in the service of their Muslim masters, and tasked with keeping other Infidels in check.) Additional information about the source: “The cruelties of the Algerine pirates, shewing the present dreadful state of the English slaves, and other Europeans, at Algiers and Tunis; with the horrid barbarities inflicted on christian mariners shipwrecked on the north western coast of africa and carried into perpetual slavery. authenticated by Mr. Jackson, of Morocco; Mr. MacGill, merchant and by Capt. Walter Croker, of His Majesty’s Sloop Wizard. Who in last July (1815) saw some of the frightful horrors of Algerian Slavery.”
Nor do we learn from her novel about the conditions of the Christian galley-slaves:
Slaves in Barbary fell into two broad categories. The ‘public slaves’ belonged to the ruling pasha [bey], who by right of rulership could claim an eighth of all Christians captured by the corsairs, and buy all the others he wanted at reduced prices. These slaves were housed in large prisons known as baños (baths), often in wretchedly overcrowded conditions. They were mostly used to row the corsair galleys in the pursuit of loot (and more slaves). This work was so strenuous that thousands died or went mad while chained to the oar.
During the winter, the corsairs stayed mostly in port, and these galley-slaves (galeotti) worked on state projects. They quarried stone, built walls and harbor facilities, even constructed new galleys. Each day they would be given perhaps two or three loaves of black bread – ‘that the dogs themselves wouldn’t eat’ – and limited water; they received one change of clothing every year. Those who collapsed on the job from exhaustion or malnutrition were typically beaten until they got up and went back to work. The bey of Algiers also bought most female captives, some of whom were taken into his harem, where they lived out their days in captivity. The majority, however, were purchased for their ransom value; while awaiting their release, they worked in the palace as harem attendants.
Many other slaves belonged not to the pasha but to private parties. ‘Their treatment and work varied. Some were well cared for. Others were worked as hard as any ‘public’ slave, in agricultural labor, or construction work, or selling water or other goods around town on his (or her) owner’s behalf. They were expected to pay a proportion of their earnings to their owner – those who failed to raise the required amount were ordinarily beaten to encourage them to work harder.
Slaves were resold, often repeatedly. As they aged their value naturally decreased, and owners were glad to get rid of them. The most unlucky ended up forgotten out in the desert, or in the Turkish sultan’s galleys, where some slaves rowed for decades without ever setting foot on shore.
In the romance novel of Sally Magnusson, there are occasional oblique references to the difficult life of the slaves, but without the details — the malnutrition, the constant beatings, the hard labor, the one change of clothes a year. Magnusson plays down the Christian slaves’ unspeakable condition in Algiers — they were despised not just because of their status as slaves, but also because they were Infidels, described in the Qur’an as “the most vile of creatures.”
While an occasional master would prove to be kind, many more were cruel, and for Europeans, the stories that they heard from those who had escaped or been ransomed filled them with horror and dread. All of this Magnusson deliberately overlooks. For that kind of permanent misery would get in the way of her love story, of growing passion between Asta and Cilleby. She might have written a serious historical novel, with a truthful depiction of Islam’s slave masters, and of the 1.5 million European Christians they enslaved. She chose instead to produce an up-market variant on all those romance novels that play on the sexual attraction of The (Deep-Pocketed) Other, and have an Arab prince as the dreamily alluring subject for a young lady’s passion. Think of Rudolf Valentino as The Sheik. Think of Lady Diana, and her liaisons with a Pakistani doctor, Hasnat Khan, who had, she gushed, “dark-brown velvet eyes that you could just sink into,” and with an Arab playboy, Dodi al Fayed — now there are examples of “othering” for you. In making up this story of growing passion between Muslim master and Christian slave, did Magnusson ever recognize the banality of her theme — the love that develops between white girl and dark lover, sex-slave and master? Heaving passions, smoldering looks, what’s not to like?
And please, let’s not have any unpleasant mention of what Muslim grooming gangs did in Rotherham, or what ISIS did to Yazidi and Christian girls in Syria and Iraq, or what happened to those kidnapped schoolgirls in Chibok. All that merely gets in the way of a touching love story, set against the background of “spiced perfumes in the roof garden harem,” and the “caress of silks,” and the froufrou of dresses worn by the Pasha’s favorite female slaves.
If you would like to learn about the conditions that 1.25 million European men, women, and children, seized by Muslim corsairs and brought back to North Africa, endured as slaves, this book is not for you.
If, on the other hand, you are a devotee of romance novels in the Barbara Cartland vein, especially those situated in exotic and sensual climes, and you’ve run out of things to read in the Second Chance For Love series, then The Sealwoman’s Gift may be just the ticket.
Lebel says
Newsflash, slaves were treated badly all over the world. Your efforts to make Muslims uniquely evil can only be successful with an ignorant audience. Also it is interesting that you omit any mention of hadiths where the prophet enjoins that slaves be treated well. That is selective and dishonest since you need to show the weaknesses in your argument as well but you don’t.
FYI Here’s how the scandinavians treated their slaves :

Don’t forget that Muslims claim that Islam is the final and perfect revelation to mankind (= peoplekind in Canada). That’s why a higher standard of moral behavior can be expected and demanded of Muslims from the inception of Islam to our days.
Benedict says
I can accept all of that, Jay Boo, it’s OK and honorable but they shouldn’t do it in the name of god and in the service of their prophet and his religion. I’m sure that both Allah and Muhammad would disapprove slightly of such childish behavior.
Wellington says
Yes, Lebel, being a slave anywhere on earth at any time in human history was not a good thing and slaves in general often suffered terribly, BUT, the Western world was the first civilization or society (and slavery has existed across all corners of the earth but only Western Civilization seems to get blamed for slavery; just another example of the absurdity and hypocrisy of political correctness and multiculturalism) to acknowledge the great wrong which slavery is, make many attempts to end it (e.g., the UK outlawing the slave trade throughout the Empire in 1807 and slavery itself in 1833), and which civilization has profusely apologized for engaging in this iniquitous institution.
When has the Islamic world EVER announced en masse to the world that slavery is wrong? When has the Islamic world on its own, I mean really on its own and not pressured by the West, eliminated slavery because it concluded it was a profound wrong? And when has the Islamic world EVER apologized for its trafficking in slavery from the time of its warped prophet, Mohammed, onwards?
You make me sick, Lebel, what with your putrid moral equivalency thinking. Indeed, it’s even worse than equivalency thinking, elevating Islam as you do over the West, since so many of us regular commenters here at JW know only too well that you are a rank apologist for the worst religion of all time and never criticize it for its own failures, which are legion and which only redound to the immense benefit of Western Civilization when the Islamic world to this very day is compared to the West. Profound shame on you for defending Islam at the expense of the West. You do this all the time and only fools or worse will buy into your many deceptions. You’re disgusting.
Kepha says
The EmCeePeeCee crowd are also very provincial. It’s why they see the word “slavery” and they immediately think of whites enslaving blacks (just about anyone from south and east of the Med), plantations, and of only the West doing it. They pick on English for using that genderless “he” or “him” in pronoun agreement, but never bat an eye when someone speaking Spanish addresses a groups of mothers and fathers as “Padres estimados”. They are also completely ignorant of how Sinitic and Kradai languages lack gendered pronouns, yet have speakers who are MCP as anyone else.
I’d love to call myself MC. I have four reading languages, three of which are written in non-Roman scripts. I have the original religion to declare that there is neither Jew nor Greek in Jesus Christ. But MC has been hijacked by a bunch of provincial yahoos who are simply tired of their own culture, and don’t know enough about anyone’s else’s to truly appreciate what they have or respect what some “other” has.
Wellington says
Seems, Kepha, only the West is tired of its own culture, which speaks volumes, especially in light of the fact that the West accomplished more by far than any other civilization in history, including 1) the invention of philosophy, 2) the invention of democracy, 3) the creation of the two religions which most value the individual, i.e., Judaism and Christianity, 4) the invention of the scientific method, 5) the capacity to apologize for its own wrongdoings far more than any other civilization or society has, 6) an artistic tradition second to none and quite arguably greater than any other, 7) the development (easily so) of the most significant technological inventions ever, for instance, railroads, the telegraph, cars, planes, radio, TV, computers, satellites, DVDs, medical marvels in extraordinary amounts like modern surgery, radiology, MRIs, more solid cures for various cancers than anything the Chinese or any other civilization or society has come up with, 8) the pioneering of women’s rights such as no other civilization even remotely approaches—————–yes, it’s a very long list and yet the youth in the West are regularly being told how crummy Western Civilization is.
Talk about getting things completely ass backwards. We do indeed live in the Age of Nonsense which, to a very significant extent, could just as easily be called the Age of Mendacity (coming in first in this “category” would be the giant lie that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance).
Time for a glass of port. Hope you and family are doing well. Though you are religious and I am not, we have much we share and agree about. I think I’ll think about this when I’m enjoying my glass of port while listening to a Beethoven Symphony (yet one thing else the Islamic world could never have created). Take care, pal.

This book is whitewashing and romanticizing Muslim slavery.
This is of especially concern today because the only people still practicing state slavery today *are Muslims*, as Lebel knows all too well. He hopes we don’t know this, though.
Larry Singleton says
Have you actually studied Islam? I suggested below that people should get a copy of Peter Hammond’s book Slavery, Terrorism and Islam.
There is no comparison between the American and Islamic slave trades first of all. Castration wasn’t an institution in America like it was with the Ottomans and others.
Islam never had an Abolitionist movement. Islam never had a Muslim William Wilberforce or David Livingstone. Rape was scripturally endorsed and also institutionalized hence the ratio of women vs men slaves as compared to the Atlantic Slave Trade. Using child soldiers if not pioneered by Muslims was absolutely perfected by them.
I’ve gone out of my way to find the “good side” of Islam and Muslims. One of the first books I bought when I started studying this issue was Taha’s Second Message of Islam. A little later I got Robert Satloff’s Among the Righteous where he looks for some Muslim Oscar Schindlers. He doesn’t have much luck. I recently bought Islam and the Abolition of Slavery by William Gervase Clarence-Smith. And I have to agree with those far more knowledgeable than me who reviewed the book and who said the title of the book was “misleading”. (To say the least)
And you’ll notice that every time a Muslim talks about his “religion”, particularly regarding history (Jihad/slavery) and the Koran (5:32), he invariably and inevitably resorts to blowing smoke up your ass or quickly moving on to another subject. I’ve experienced this time and time and time again.
I could talk about the Crusades compared to Jihad and on and on and on. Islam always comes up short. Read Ibn Warraq, Andrew Bostom, Bat Ye’or.

Just Keep the Satanic islam out of Australia. Even the quran itself is a lie, quran 5/46 ,” And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for the righteous”. allah sent Jesus the Gospels , What BULLSHIT, Jesus had been DEAD for over 70 years before the Gospels were written . So either allah LIED, muhammad LIED or islam is all but a LIE. So herefore allah and the God of Jesus, Moses and Abraham can never be the same God .quran says allah revealed the 1st 5 books of the torah to Moses . also says allah revealed the 5 books of the gospels to jesus . The Gospels were NEVER revealed to Jesus as he was DEAD for over 70 years . So how is it possible for allah if he is the same god to Moses , Abraham and Jesus etc to not know this FACT ?? Because he is a Figment of a Murderous Criminal,s Mind , muhammad. How could the Angel of allah, Gabrielle ,the alleged messenger of muhammad get this so WRONG. Also, quran 4:157 “And [for] their saying, “Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah .” And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain” . states that Jesus was not crucified on the cross or resurrected but the same Gospels allah is supposed to have given a dead Jesus states that Jesus Was Crucified on the Cross and resurrected. The quran is a Contradiction of LIES to tell Murders, Pedophiles, SATANIC Worshipers to Invade Civilized People and to take over the WORLD. Jesus was the son of God, muhammad is the DEVIL and all who worship him are EVIL as History Proves where ever islam leaves but a Footprint, Death, Destruction and a loss of Civilization and Humanity always follows..

Just for the sake of accuracy, it is generally believed that even the last book of the NT (Revelation) was penned within 70 years of Christ’s Crucifixion, in AD97.
It’s more than likely that the four Gospels were written and in circulation by no later than 70 AD, Paul’s letters having been issued before about 65 AD.
Daniel Wallace argues for John having been written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD. If that is the case, then, since John was the last to be written, the others would necessarily have been composed earlier.

Last time I checked the “Vikings” had transformed into a generally passive group of people known for their fondness for DIY, off canned fish and feminism … but go figure, obviously Lebel knows something I don’t, I had no idea the “Vikings” were still plying the trade in the northern hemisphere.
Funny he should mention Scandinavia though … I’ve heard tell they have something of a problem with a rape epidemic (now featuring no-go-zones, plans for troops on the streets and grenade attacks too, to boot) in one of their more populous nations: Sweden.
Ah yes … Sweden.
Yeah, odd thing too as it seems to coincide with two other phenomena: one being the election of an all female, Marxist and hyper-feminist government and the other being a mass migration of North African and Middle Eastern Muslims. Maybe the women in government are fans of this genre of literature too, eh?
So yeah … “Vikings” … they ain’t.
But the Islamic world seems to have remained un-changed since Mahound first waxed lyrical on the benefits of enslaving infidel weapons in the Sixth Century. At the very least you might say the old religion is enjoying somewhat of a comeback. You know, if you actually compare headlines that is.
Now none of this would matter at all if old Mahound had been left to posterity as nothing more than the sum of all his parts – some war Lord who seemed to like em young, was fond of slavery and this thing he referred to as “jihad”, but alas those crazy cats who went along for the ride insisted on referring to him as the perfect man and as a prophet of God to boot and driven on in part by the ” divine authority” given unto them to enslave (sexually too … oh how delicious, they must have thought) anyone who disagreed with them set about conquering what we today refer to as the Islamic world (as if it should be taken for granted that such a thing exists).
So tldr centuries later, after a brief period of manfulness in which our more immediate ancestors emerged from centuries of internal squabbles (that at least had one advantage in as much as they made us a damn site more competitive than the rest and it showed too) took a good hard look at what lay to the south of them and agreed that “that shit just wouldn’t fly any more”, we are at the cusp of a new / old era of piracy, plunder, enslavement and rape except this time it isn’t just the poor bastards on the coast and on the rivers who have to watch out its anyone in any given town or city (from Sweden to Great Britain right the way down the boot of Italy and into Greece) unlucky enough to encounter Mohammed and his mates out for a night of gang rape on the town.
Why? Well, most likely because of Liberally minded do-gooders like yourself who are renowned for their wisdom (rooted as it is in a deep and intimate knowledge of what constitutes human nature in all its diverse forms), knowledge of oneself, of current affairs and history and their titanic intellects the world over.
Oh wait … no … your all just Justin Trudeau (without the drama school qualifications).

Mohammad ruled that no Muslims could be enslaved and urged those who had Muslim slaves to free them. This was a great inducement to Christian ,Jewish slaves to convert.
Infidel slaves were of only a fraction of the value ,in terms of their humanity, to a Muslim. Killing a slave was not punished severely ,unless the slave belonged to another when the owner had to be compensated.
The slaves of Muslims were treated worse than the slaves taken to America . The Christian slaves were made to spend most of the day in very hard labour, often pointless. They were kept in the most inhuman conditions; some in basically a pit in the ground which often was half filled with water over which the hammocks of the wretched Slaves had to be suspended . They were literally worked to death.
Black slaves were treated worst of all. Most males were castrated.
Unlike in America ,there were no people or movements to lighten the load of the slaves and no one calling for their liberation. Somme slave owners, normally the owners of small enterprises, treated slaves cruelly. But most were living in conditions no worse than the rural peasantry ,and often fed better and more regularly. The wealthy magnates, who were the main owners of slaves , housed the, in wooden cabins which were actually better than some lived in by the rural poor in America and Europe .
Slavery of the infidel was not really for industrial or economic purposes but mainly as a punishment and indication of their vile condition as infidels. Ransom was also a viral part of the process. The sums paid for the release of slaves were vast. King James of England paid over £2000 for the release of half a dozen slaves, a vast sum in the 17 th century ,equivalent to several millions today.
Slavery in Islam was part of the Sunna of Mohammad and propagated as part of the religious/ideological system.
By the way ,the mention of infidels in the print refers to the Muslims who were considered infidels to Christian Europe .
Most importantly ,the British abolished slavery world wide but the Islamic states stubbornly clung to it even to the present day because it is part of the Sunna of Mohammed.

Yes, the Vikings were a cruel, hard people when they were pagans. Then, like the rest of Europe, they became Christians. It took a little longer for Christianity to penetrate their extreme warrior culture than some others, but the change was as profound as elsewhere. Jesus never advocated killing anyone. That didn’t mean he was a passivist. He never said Christians couldn’t or shouldn’t defend themselves. But, He did teach that we should love our enemies and do good to those that teat us badly. We should do unto others as we’d have them do unto us. These teachings change people, and that changes cultures and nations. None of those teachings are present in Islam even today. And so, Islam is the same today as it was in 700 AD.

“Arranged” marriages are the norm in the Muslim world. If you are the woman or girl who has a husband picked out for her, it can be slavery if the girl doesn’t like the husband. Sometimes they are disgusted by the husband, especially if he is much older then she is.
So female slavery is practiced on a routine basis by Muslims. Everybody who regularly reads this site and other similar sites will know that the in a Muslim marriage, the wife is basically a slave to her husband. She is considered to be property.
All of this has Allah’s stamp of approval. Muhammad had many wives and many sex slaves. Looking at it another way, Islam is, by far, the worst religion for women who want to make their own life choices. I’m pretty sure there are some Muslim marriages where the wife is the dominant partner, but if the husband decided to beat her up for being “rebellious” it would not be a crime.

Whilst the Arabs have been acknowledged as a prime force in the early usage of slaves from Africa, very little has been written about their usage of White slaves, whether they were part of the Russian slave trade or those kidnapped by Arab pirates. However, in recent years, the research of some authors has been bringing this issue to light.
The origins of African slavery in the New World cannot be understood without some knowledge of the millennium of warfare between Christians and Muslims that took place in the Mediterranean and Atlantic and the piracy and kidnapping that went along with it. In 1627 pirates from the Barbary Coast of North Africa raided distant Iceland and enslaved nearly four hundred astonished residents. In 1617 Muslim pirates, having long enslaved Christians along the coasts of Spain, France, Italy, and even Ireland, captured 1,200 men and women in Portuguese Madeira. Down to the 1640s, there were many more English slaves in Muslim North Africa than African slaves under English control in the Caribbean. Indeed, a 1624 parliamentary proclamation estimated that the Barbary states held at least 1,500 English slaves, mostly sailors captured in the Mediterranean or Atlantic.
Millions of European Christians were kidnapped and enslaved by Muslims in North Africa between 1530 and 1780 — a far greater number than had ever been estimated before.

The protagonist Asta is a powerful Nordic woman – a Scandinavian feminist – forms a romantic, Stockholm syndromic relationship with the Muslim man who has stolen her and wants to keep her as a slave — Sounds like the story of modern day Sweden: Having abolished their own menkind (men of a kind) by emasculation these women now import savages in order to satisfy themselves and their cucks.
gravenimage says
This is based on a real story–but imagining that Asta was happy to be kidnapped, separated from her husband and children, and used as a sex slave is pure fantasy–and a very ugly fantasy.
Benedict says
Agree. But the ugly fantasy could be one of Sally Magnusson-?
These reflections of Jordan Peterson might be interesting in this context, g :

Benedict says
PS: If you look at the migration industry in Sweden it is overwhelmingly run by women and their staff of beta males.

Interesting, Benedict–I had not seen Jordan Peterson before.
But this fantasy–if that is what it is, I have not read Magnusson’s book–is just ugly.
I have to tell you, most women’s fantasies have to do with earning a man’s love–not with being kidnapped, enslaved in a Harem, losing their husband and children, and being repeatedly raped.

For goodness sake it you encounter anyone who has read this recycled Rudolph Valentino I’m-the-sheikh-of-Araby-your-love-belongs-to-me tripe and is gushing over it please refer them to “White Gold” by Giles Milton for an accurate history of the appalling fate of victims of Muslim enslavement from all over Europe and as far afield as Newfoundland.
And yes, it does sound like what is brewing in modern day Sweden, and it was no more romantic to be seized and raped by a Muslim slavemaster or one of his clients in 17th century Algiers than it is to be seized and raped by a Muslim migrant in Malmo. Except, of course, to leftist apologists for Islam, and Swedish feminists.
Sally Magnussen is a nitwit who would benefit from taking a break from counting the money she will make from this piece of trash to be lowered from a helicopter wearing only her thong into the main square of Riyadh/Cairo/Tehran on a Friday right after prayers in order to experience close up and personal the joys of becoming an infidel female (assuming she hasn’t converted) who some Muslim’s right hand possesses.
R Russell says
Sally Magnusson is a well respected newscaster in the UK. There has never been any scandals about her.
Perhaps you should have had a look at her age before you suggested she be lowered from a helicopter.
What you wrote is extremely insulting. But perhaps you don’t know that Magnusson (Not Magnussen) is an Icelandic name.

R Russell says
sorry should be ‘have’
gravenimage says
R Russell, surely you do not think that Sally Magnusson’s romanticizing of Muslim slavery is a good thing?
dumbledoresarmy says
She is of Scots nationality; the daughter of a Scotswoman and an Icelander.
As per wikipedia, which is fairly reliable for this sort of basic trivia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Magnusson
“Sally Magnusson was born in 1955 and is the daughter of the Icelandic-born broadcaster and writer Magnus Magnusson. Her mother, Mamie Baird, also worked as a journalist”.
She’s 62. I will say this one thing for her: she has five kids, which is kind of above-average for a person born in the UK in the 1950s.
But she ought to know better – particularly given everything we have been hearing from the survivors of modern-day Islamic sexual enslavement of non-Muslim females – than to write a book that romanticises … Muslim sexual enslavement of non-Muslim females.
R Russell says
Her nationality is British.
There is no such thing as Scottish nationality, or English nationality or Welsh nationality or N Irish nationality.
The British media says nothing about the true beliefs of Islam, and as Jihad Watch has just reported, people get sent to prison for telling the truth.
Instead of slamming her here, why not send her a letter – you know, how we communicated before email? But try to be kind to her in it. You don’t win people over by vilifying them in a letter. She can be told about the Koran and Hadiths online in English. The Law of abrogation. Perhaps you could include modern day slavery like the 2 Moroccan women for sale of a Saudi website this week. Tell her about the Yazidis and Christians sold into slavery by ISIS. None of that is available in the UK. The one thing which you could get her to access would be the continuous assault of Nissar Hussain. It was reported , although not in Scotland. She needs to know that is the normal conduct of Muslims and not ‘extremists’ as the British media says. Even the Prime Minister says Islam is a noble religion.
I’ve almost written in for you. If you are unhappy about her knowledge, educate her in a way she will accept.
She lives in Torrance. It’s a small place and since she is so well known, I can almost guarantee she will receive it.
Anyone can vilify from a distance and with anonymity and in a way she is unlikely ever to hear about.
If you are really interested in the truth reaching her, then educate her
Rob Crawford says
Did Muslims actually use slaves as rowers? The Greeks and Romans (and Persians, I believe ) didn’t, because a single rower could throw the ship into chaos — tangling the oars, leaving the ship immobile.
If the Muslims did use slave rowers, how did their ships win any battle?
R Russell says
In the middle ages, the slaves were chained to the galley
If you look up John Knox on Wikipedia you will get a description of his life as French galley slave
gravenimage says
Yes, they were, Rob.
At the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, 12,000 Christian galley slaves were freed from the Ottoman Turks.
As for how that worked, galley slaves were seldom in a position to sabotage things–they just wanted to survive.

Get yourself a copy of Peter Hammond’s “Slavery, Terrorism and Islam: The Historical Roots and Contemporary Threat”. Even though I’ve got Bat Ye’or and Andrew Bostom on my shelf this is the book I reach for the most for quick references to slavery. When you read it you’ll see why.
His “Holocaust in Rwanda” is also a valuable (and heartbreaking) little booklet as well.

Regarding “How the Left Became its Own Worst Enemy” by Denis MacEoin
I watched a movie last night. Can’t remember the name of it. (It starred Maureen O’Hara) But it was one of those “Arabian Nights” movies or “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” or “Aladdin” or what ever. And I recall the cartoons as a kid with Porky Pig as an Arab with that turban head gear riding the sway-backed camel through the desert. Or Popeye fighting the evil “Sheikh” Bluto. And in all of these movies and cartoons there is usually the “Harem”. Or at least some romanticized version of the harem. All the beautiful girls and women vying for the Sheik’s attention. Or a Tony Curtis falling in love with a harem girl, rescuing her and riding off into the desert sunset. You know what I mean. I think even Bob Hope and Bing Crosby and Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis have done movies like this.
I kept reading and waiting for Mr. MacEoin to mention these remantacized harems in films at least. I know it was unrealistic but for a long time I’ve thought about that, I think after reading the brilliant little book Slavery, Islam and Terrorism by Christian missionary Peter Hammond. In it he talks about people like David Livingstone and William Wilberforce who risked their lives and careers respectively fighting the slave trades.
I was particularly drawn to the story about Livingstone because I immediately recalled those cartoons with the wiry Morton Stanley approaches another thin emaciated cartoon character and says “Dr. Livingstone I presume?”
Until I read this book that was the sum total of my knowledge about one of the greatest Christian heroes who battled the slave trade. Apparently he risked his life “numerous” times when he was attacked by slave traders.
In the eight years I’ve been studying Islam since reading the books The Haj by Leon Uris and Because They Hate by Brigitte Gabriel, I’ve never seen any mention of these PC versions of Islam you’d see on TV on Saturday mornings as kids or in movies that were made in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
Too bad someone doesn’t do the type of Hugh Fitizgerald essays on this subject; “Harems in Hollywood and Cartoons”. That’s something I would really look forward to reading.
Also there was always the ever present “Eunuchs”.
I didn’t learn till just recently, (Ibn Warraq’s “The Islam in Islamic Terrorism”?) what an actual atrocity these “Eunuchs” were. More often small boys who had either “major” or “Minor” castration performed on them where many, many of them died from these “operations”.
These eunuchs were usually pictured in cartoons and movies as these overly huge, bare chested, black or white slaves who guarded the harems usually wearing some kind of Turban and vest and those balloon pants and curled shoes or slippers.
Again; some writer could articulate all this better than I can and would dearly love to see some essay written along these lines.

Are you referring to the movie in which he says, in broad Bronx, “Yondah lies the castle of my fahda”?
Jack Diamond says
Alas, a “play it again, Sam” moment, Hugh. Those famous words were never uttered by the future Boston Strangler.
In the forgettable “Son of Ali Baba” Bernie Schwartz aka Tony Curtis says, “this is the palace of my father, and yonder lies the Valley of the Sun” maybe the one line the movie where he doesn’t fall into his preposterously Bronxian “Persian” accent. Debbie Reynolds seems to be the source of the “yondah lies the castle of my fadha” quip regarding Bernard’s acting prowess. He does rescue an escaped harem girl (Piper Laurie). Neither of whom (too bad) made cameos in Elvis Presley’s arguably worst ever film (it’s very competitive), “Harem Scarem”.

You’re pretty well informed. Would you happen to know where I can get Winston Churchill’s TWO VOLUME “The River War”? (Cheap)
I was halfway through the book I bought when I learned that there was a two volume edition. Hence, I started kicking over the furniture. Because, (I’ll have to look), I’m not sure that the new edition included the part about “Muslims” and “rabid dogs”. And many other comments they edited out because the publishers, I guess, didn’t want to offend Muslims even then.
Also, I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a set of Encyclopedia of Islam FIRST EDITION, as Ibn Warraq said that the second edition was the “politically correct” edited version.
And a dumb idea occurred to me: I don’t know if you, (or anybody else here) has an “in” with Pamela Geller but she blocked me on her website, (for my cussing I think which I’ve since cleaned up), many years ago and hasn’t uncensored me despite many requests & abject begging to be reinstated. ‘The keenest and most aware, in every part of the Western world (and, indeed, also, some beyond it, in places like India – dda), are now engaged in one vast, but not collective, History Lesson.
“Those in this class are necessarily a class of autodidacts, given the failure of our governments to instruct us, and given the near-total monopoly over academic departments and courses on Islam by those engaged not so much in instruction as in apologetics…
“So here we are, now rediscovering the history of India, even if we are not Indians, and perhaps learning more about it, reading more sympathetically about what Muslim rule did to India, than many Indians who, to prove their lack of parochialism, their freedom from “communalism,” overlook the real history, and continuing menace, of Islam in India.
“Here we are, even those who until a few years ago hardly knew about the Ottomans in Europe, realizing why the Serbs need to be protected from Muslim demands, either by “Bosnians” or by Albanians….”.
“Oh, we are not experts. We can’t compete with Schacht and Snouck Hurgronje and St. Clair Tisdall. But we can read Schacht and Snouck Hurgronje and St. Clair Tisdall and Arthur Jeffery and Tor Andrae and Henri Lammens.

“Freedom of navigation” is a term we see in the news, but it highlights an earlier time when sea voyages were often preyed on by pirates who may or may not be muslims. Certainly the corsairs were a scourge only eliminated when Western nations developed large well armed navies to hunt to extinction this menace. A few years ago we saw off the coast of Somalia the return of the kidnapping pirate. Only ongoing patrol of all waters by strong navies can prevent the re-emergence of this menace.

Well, one interesting aspect of this debate cannot be overlooked. Stefan Molineux pointed that one out. The female psyche seems to be carrying out an ancient program to select for the best and strongest male. And therefore be not all to concerned of future consequences of lax politics towards islamic jihad. Because they tend to be far less horrible than that of male captives of jihad.
Whereas the male captives are often killed or at least castrated, a procedure that has not only been extremely painful but also resulted in a further death toll, the women were “rewarded” as he puts it with sex with the winning male to reproduce the winner dna. Sometimes the truth can be as eye opening as it is bewildering. Esp for males. Esp for white males.
gravenimage says
Oh, I’m so sick of this crap–as though decent women consider rapist Muslim thugs to be “the best”.
dumbledoresarmy says
Yes, so am I.
One thing the likes of “Mike” ignore is that it is highly probable that most infidel females taken as sex slaves by Muslims *didn’t* survive, let alone have descendants. Certainly the black girls taken as sex slaves by Arab and Turkish Muslims left no perceptible genetic trace.. because, so far as anyone can discover, the children they conceived by their Muslim masters were *systematically murdered* by those same masters.
One Ottoman sultan wearied of his harem and tied them all up in sacks and had them thrown in the Bosphorus to drown. You don’t leave any descendants if you are murdered before you have children. (And every time an Ottoman sultan succeeded to the throne his first act was usually to murder his *brothers*… so any woman who did bear a child in the Ottoman Muslim harem would most likely see that child *perish miserably*.
Muslims are famous for their ‘force-breeding’ habits; but the other side of that is an *enormous* toll of women and girls who never live to have descendants because they are ‘honor’ (or rather, ‘horror’) murdered; because they are neglected as young children, and die; because they are married off waaay too young, and their reproductive systems are so grossly damaged by the abusive sex to which they are subjected by their rapist-‘husbands’ that they *die*.. or else if they manage to survive that, then they conceive, and die in childbirth. A woman named Miriam Ali, in a book called “Without Mercy”, described the child-brides she met in Yemen: one of them had been ‘married’ at nine and endured three miscarriages before the age of twelve; she then had a stillbirth, and *went insane*. *Then* one may add in the practice of FGM in a large chunk of the Muslim world; not a few girls die when it is done to them; of those that survive, many endure a life-long health burden of infection (especially kidney infection) that probably affects their fertility (certainly, ‘banking-up’ of menses would promote uterine and fallopian-tube infections), and many who do manage still to conceive, again, die in childbirth or suffer horrific injuries that render them subsequently infertile.
