Some time after my article on Khaled About El Fadl appeared in 2005, with its many links to his then-website www.scholarofthehouse.com, he apparently relinquished that domain name, and instead bought another. Now, if you click on www.scholarofthehouse.org (not .com), you will arrive at his current website: www.searchforbeauty.org. That website is awe-inspiring, in the sense that it inspires a certain kind of awe. So do read as much as you can stand at www.search for beauty.org.
At that site, you will find out About Us:
Beauty and Reasonableness are the defining principles of the school of thought of scholar and Islamic jurist, Khaled Abou El Fadl. Professor Abou El Fadl has dedicated a lifetime to the study of Islam, Islamic jurisprudence, Shari’ah (the path to and from God), international law and human rights, among many other subjects. Yet, few are aware of the massive corpus of scholarship he has produced, as well as their ultimately transformative nature.
For this reason, we have set out to amass this wealth of knowledge in one place and make it easier to access, navigate and learn from. We believe this is the way forward for the future of Islam: open-minded, engaged with modern reality, centered on truth and justice, full of love for all of humanity and creation, and motivated by the search for divinity and beauty in all avenues of life. For those who know his work, this engagement with the Islamic tradition represents the alternative to the often bleak and depressing current state of affairs among Muslims, and offers a hopeful, inspired and reassuring way out.
At that site, you will discover Our Mission:
Our Mission is to raise awareness, educate and increase the understanding of the methodologies, ideas and learned opinions of one of the best Islamic scholars of our times, Dr. Khaled About El Fadl, whose work profoundly illuminates the way to live an engaged and elevated life as a Muslim in the West in our day and age.
The writings, lectures, and opinions – in other words, the collective testimony before God of this great scholar – make the grand case that Islam, Islamic law and Shari’ah (the path to and from God) should rightly be understood, lived and dedicated to the divine virtues of our shared humanity with others, and that our duty as Muslims is to represent the best of humanity in all we do. This collective testimony is our manifesto, plain and simple.
OUR PURPOSE
Our Purpose is to help navigate this vast wealth of knowledge{in seeking an enlightened, humanistic and compassionately reasonable alternative to the status quo – away from the ugliness of oppressive and ignorant interpretations of Islam. We ask for God’s guidance and blessing in this weighty task, and invite all to join us in working towards a collective journey to enlightenment, or as Dr. Abou El Fadl terms it, “a collective enterprise of goodness.” (from Reasoning with God)
But it is not just the desire to raise awareness, educate and increase the understanding of the methodologies, ideas and learned opinions of one of the best Islamic scholars of our times, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, whose work profoundly illuminates the way to live an engaged and elevated life as a Muslim, nor to make available the vast wealth of knowledge of Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, that explains this website which, it should be said, Dr.Khaled Abou El Fadl had nothing to do with.
Generous contributions are requested from viewers, but do not think for one minute that Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl himself benefits financially from this:
This website is solely owned and operated by Students, Supporters and Friends of Dr. Abou El Fadl, and is committed to the preservation and dissemination of his school of thought. Dr. Abou El Fadl is neither involved in nor responsible for any of the activities related to this website, including the conducting of any matters of business, or the making of any decisions regarding its policies. Dr. Abou El Fadl does not gain any financial benefit from the website, but has graciously allowed us permission to reproduce his works here.
Of course, while Dr. Abou El Fadl may not “gain any financial benefit,” one wonders if his wife, Grace Song, or his son might by any chance do so. Or is that being overly suspicious?
Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl has started something he calls the Usuli Institute, which he describes at the site as an Islamic Think Tank. He is soliciting funds for that Think Tank, which is headed by none other than its founder, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl. Might he, just possibly, receive a salary — oh, shall we say something nominal? — for this “Counter-Jihad Initiative,” this “Islamic Think Tank for countering ignorance and extremism,” and winning the War of Ideas. “Reclaiming beauty, reasonableness, love and humanity in Islam” takes work. And money, lots and lots of money. You can’t attract talent like that of Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl without suitable compensation.
The goal of the Usuli Institute, to quote Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, is
…To win this very real war that has done inestimable damage to so many Muslims and to the truth of the Islamic faith, it is absolutely imperative that moderates declare a counter-jihad against the puritan heresy. This is not a call for the shedding of blood; it is a call for matching the zeal of puritans through unrelenting intellectual activism. This is a counter-jihad to reclaim the truth about the Islamic faith and win the hearts and minds of Muslims and non-Muslims all around the world…
To help everyone learn what he or she needs to know about different aspects of Islam, the website of Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, though don’t forget this website is “solely owned and operated by Students, Supporters and Friends of Dr. Abou El Fadl,” has a list of nine books of Recommended Readings.
These nine indispensable books are:
Reasoning With God by Khaled Abou El Fadl
The Search for Beauty in Islam by Khaled Abou El Fadl
The Great Theft by Khaled Abou El Fadl
Rebellion and Violence in Islamic Law by Khaled Abou El Fadl
The Place of Tolerance In Islam by Khaled Abou El Fadl
Islam and the Challenge of Democracy by Khaled Abou El Fadl
Speaking In God’s Name by Khaled Abou El Fadl
And God Knows The Soldiers by Khaled Abou El Fadl
Conference of the Books by Khaled Abou El Fadl
I think I detect a pattern here. And why not? If you have someone with vast knowledge, one of the world’s greatest scholars of Islam, who has not been sufficiently appreciated, why should anyone, least of all the Supporters of Dr. Khaled Abou el Fadl, who own and operate this website, be reluctant to list his books? Is Khaled Abou El Fadl to blame if he has written so magisterially on so many important topics? Should we blame Khaled Abou El Fadl if “in 2017 and 2005, he was listed as one of LawDragon’s Top 500 Lawyers in the Nation”? Or if, “in 2013,” he was recognized among “the 50 Smartest People of Faith” by TheBestSchools.org, and was awarded the “American Muslim Achievement Award” in 2014.” Should Khaled Abou El Fadl hide his light under a basket, and not let us know that “he has been ranked” among “The Power 500 List of the World’s Most Influential Arabs” and “The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims”? Fortunately, all that information, and much more, can be found after having clicked on “About About El Fadl,” you then click on “Honors and Recognition” and come to a long list of honors and recognition sure to dazzle and impress.
At the website for the Usuli Institute, which was founded by, and is currently headed by, Dr. Abou El Fadl — who wants it to be understood that he would love to have someone else take up the burden of running this institute, but so far it’s been left on his broad shoulders — you will find paeans of well-deserved praise to the vast learning and wisdom of Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl. You will find videotaped lectures and sessions of halaqa (the “circle of learning”), starring Khaled About El Fadl, the latest online articles by Khaled Abou El Fadl, the books written by Khaled Abou El Fadl, the media appearances by Khaled Abou El Fadl, the latest Friday khutbas by Khaled Abou El Fadl. He’s a one-man multitude, is Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl.
You can find a lot more — I’d recommend spending several hours examining the inexhaustible intellectual riches of the Usuli Institute, which you can find here.
And just to whet your appetite, here’s what went on at the Third Halaqa, on 3 February 2018:
In the third meeting of the Usual Institute, we begin with a discussion of converts. Dr. Abou El Fadl discusses the historical dynamics of conversion in America, and the relationship of colonialism and Islamophobia, as well as the underlying theology of the “straight path” and the meaning of imaan. In the Q&A segment, he covers a wide range of topics from jinn and demons; to the what it will take to make a difference in our current context; to the intercession of the Prophet; shaking hands, wearing beards and much more.
And you may find particularly stirring the inaugural lecture of the Usuli Insitute, which happened to be given by Khaled Abou El Fadl here.
But once you have digested that new information about Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl’s recent work, perhaps you will revisit with me a piece I did on Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl in 2005, when, while he was already eminent, he was not quite as eminent as he is nowadays, having in recent years scaled all the possible everests of eminence that remained for someone of his eminence to climb.
You can find that piece here about Scholar of the House Khaled Abou El Fadl. It does not date.

Why would an American law school have a course on Islamic law? It is not applicable in any court in the USofA. It’s meaningless. You’d get laughed out of any court if you cited it as an authority for anything.
Does UCLA have a course on the Napoleonic Code? Hammurabi Code? Justinian?
If he wishes to “preach peace and love and brotherhood” to anyone he should begin by directing his attention to those coreligionists of his who don’t define “jihad” in the same way. He’s preaching to the wrong crowd. We WANT islam to be a religion of peace.

Interesting name “USULI”.
“Usul” means an ‘ESSENTIAL’ as in ‘ESSENTIAL OF THE FAITH’ (‘usul ud-deen).
So, he is teaching ESSENTIALS of Islam, such as
– inequality of women and men
– inequality of Muslims and the DIRTY KUFAAR
– hatred and hostility that Muslims are required to direct against the DIRTY KUFAAR
– Islamic apartheid (doctrine called ‘al-WALAA wal-BARAA’)
– Islamic aggression (doctrine called ‘JIHAD’)
– Islamic PREVARICATION (doctrine called TAQIYYA)

How about a discussion on free speech and freedom of religion between Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl and a fellow UCLA law school professor?
Let’s suggest Eugene Volokh. He is no Muslim towering intellect. But he might be a match anyway, in a David vs. Goliath sense.
Consider this:
(1) SAT math score of 780 (800 max.);
(2) B.S. in math and computer science from UCLA.
So what, you ask? Well, Eugene Volokh took the SAT at age 10, as a recent immigrant to the US. And he graduated from UCLA at age 15.
Volokh’s specialties are freedom of speech, tort law, and freedom of religion. A friendly discussion on Islam in this context on national TV between the two UCLA law professors would not be dull moment. And since Islam is all about diversity, Abou El Fadl will no doubt be delighted that Volokh happens to be Jewish.
Of course, Dr. Abou el Fadl might politely decline to participate, for various unspecified reasons. Perhaps he needs to spend more time with his family, and we would sympathize. Besides, continually breathing the rarefied air as a towering intellect is not without risk.

I would really like an opinion from Sam Solomon and Daniel Shayesteh about Abou El Fadl, because no matter how scholarly he is about Islam, it does not change its nature. No art, no laughing, no singing, no music, no joking, no inventing, no composing, kids are shielded from seeing joyful, smiling faces, no happy colours, no thrill of flirting or falling in love, no respect for the billions of others who belong to the family of man, no respect for other’s property, history, archaeology, … and those are its positive aspects. Add in its negative aspects of desensitization by watching live animal sacrifices to a deity, roasting women under black, suffocating, body bags, severe punishments that permanently destroy any second chances to learn from a mistake or a misjudgment, wiping one’s butt with three pebbles, pedophilia, genocide, cruelty, ….!!
I hope Europeans especially, and the rest of us, understand that the reason the migrants don’t try to find worthwhile employment and build a new life is that they are waiting in Limbo until the jihadists go door to door removing the population from their houses and replace them with the migrants. This happened in Yugoslavia during World War 2 when the Soviets came in and replaced the residents who were then put into local concentration camps. It is a sobering thought that there is a reason why Europeans are paying out of their own pockets to seal their doom.

I have said this before about him: he gets lots of citations on Google Scholar. Not a decent journal among them but that’s just coincidence. The sad thing is not that he thinks he is a scholar- it is that many academics think he is. To get a tenured position at UCLA you need normally dozens of A journal papers. He even published in a feminist journal about the beauty of islam.
islam and its propagators get a free pass in academia.

Good point, RichardL.
And most published Islamic scholarship is deceitful propaganda to begin with.

What amazes me is the incredible amount of sheep and goat skins, and also trees, that have been used up to write Islam’s never-ending “scholarship” products. Hard to imagine so much time and energy devoted to the conflicted interpretations of what some desert prophet from the 7th century said. Here’s one of the problems I have with this: It is possible that El Fadl is on the level, and that he actually believes all this stuff he is saying. But even if that’s true, it’s irrelevant – the overwhelming majority of Muslims throughout the world disagree with him. He might believe, for example, that Sharia does not require death for apostasy, but what difference does that make if the governments of almost all Muslim countries feel otherwise?
The sad truth is, if all, or even most, Muslims agreed with El Fadl, we would not be having this conversation, because Islam would be just one more religion in a world full of them, and I and those like me would give no more thought to Islam than we do to Baha’ism, Shinto, or the Hare Krishna movement. But that’s not the case – most Muslims do not agree with the things El Fadl says (and in fact we have no way of knowing whether or not El Fadl himself really believes it). While the majority of Muslims do not themselves commit acts of violent jihad, that doesn’t mean they don’t approve of it.
RonaldB says
I will have a more complete post when I finish reading the other comments, but I want to comment on your comment.
You give El Fadl the benefit of the doubt. Consider this, however. Whatever his claims to a peaceful or historical interpretation of Islam, what he does in no uncertain terms is demonize critics of Islam, and call them names. So, even the “liberal” Muslims critics and “reformers” like El Fadl and his admirer, Irshad Manji, help set the discourse atmosphere to discourage any collective defense against Islam.

I’m kind of disappointed in this posting by Fitzgerald. His main criticism of El Fadl is that he is a tireless self-promoter of his own articles and books. My own feeling is, I have nothing against some healthy self-promotion, and note that Jihad Watch promotes, on its home page, the books of Robert Spencer, many of which I own. So, I think Spencer ought to promote himself, but that rather precludes my being critical of El Fadl for doing the same thing.
Fitzgerald’s 2005 article, to which he refers us, https://www.jihadwatch.org/2005/04/fitzgerald-a-tribute-to-scholar-of-the-house-khaled-abou-el-fadl has essentially the same criticism of El Fadl: tireless self-promotion.
However, the 2005 article does add some information of more interest to me: El Fadl lists books by non-Muslims about Islam as the “worst books” on Islam.
But, pursuing this line of thought, if you go to El Fadl’s website, you can find this set of videos:
“ISLAMOPHOBIA, RACISM AND WHITE NATIONALISM”
https://www.searchforbeauty.org/explore/islamophobia-racism-and-white-nationalism/
I am of the opinion that El Fadl is a pleasant enough person, probably one you would like to have as a neighbor. Irshad Manji describes how El Fadl shows that “true” Islam does not mandate that dogs are evil, and actually owns one himself. Someone who loves dogs can’t be all bad, but he can definitely be dangerous. In this case, El Fadl helps the systematic criticism and the suppression by “shaming” of any real, knowledgeable, non-Muslim critics of Islam and in particular, those warning of the dangers of ignoring the threat of Islam.
Recall the 2011 speech at the UN by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, where she states openly that the pesky first amendment of the US Constitution prevents the overt criminalization of Islamic criticism in the US, but critics instead should be shamed and ostracized. Even Hillary didn’t anticipate the effect of Antifa, the paramilitary, street-fighting proxy for the Deep State. Antifa is the enforcer of Deep State orthodoxy that provides the actual heads of national law enforcement and intelligence deniability, while still giving material support to violent suppression of opposing views. And, I would challenge anyone to give me a reference where El Fadl criticizes the suppression by violence of the measured criticism of Islam.

I don’t think Robert’s straightforward listing of his books — and his bringing to the attention of visitors to JW his latest book on the history of Jihad — reaches the dizzying heights of Khaled Abou El Fadl’s self-promotion. Nowhere does Robert suggest that his are the only books on Islam anyone needs to consult. Remember that the Recommended Readings about Islam that Khaled Abou El Fadl offers are nine works, all of them written by none other than Khaled Abou el Fadl. His ludicrous listing of his “Recognitions” are also worth noting: “In 2017 and 2005, he was listed as one of LawDragon’s Top 500 Lawyers in the Nation.” “In 2013,” he was recognized among “the 50 Smartest People of Faith” by TheBestSchools.org. In 2014 hewas awarded the “American Muslim Achievement Award.” “He has been ranked” among “The Power 500 List of the World’s Most Influential Arabs” and “The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims.” And on and on it goes. The site is full of expressions of praise for this man who doth bestride the world like a colossus:
“Professor Abou El Fadl has dedicated a lifetime to the study of Islam, Islamic jurisprudence, Shari’ah (the path to and from God), international law and human rights, among many other subjects. Yet, few are aware of the massive corpus of scholarship he has produced, as well as their ultimately transformative nature.”
and
“[W]e have set out to amass this wealth of knowledge [possessed by Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl] in one place and make it easier to access, navigate and learn from. We believe this is the way forward for the future of Islam: open-minded, engaged with modern reality, centered on truth and justice, full of love for all of humanity and creation, and motivated by the search for divinity and beauty in all avenues of life.
and there’s more:
“Our Mission is to raise awareness, educate and increase the understanding of the methodologies, ideas and learned opinions of one of the best Islamic scholars of our times, Dr. Khaled About El Fadl, whose work profoundly illuminates the way to live an engaged and elevated life as a Muslim in the West in our day and age.”
“The writings, lectures, and opinions – in other words, the collective testimony before God of this great scholar…;”
Had enough? I’m sure there’s plenty more where that came from, sooner or later to be posted by Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, who is a great admirer, probably the greatest admirer, of Dr, Khaled Abou El Fadll, or the sycophants who take direction from him.
I don’t see anything similar at Jihad Watch.

Who cares if he is an expert in any of the many facets of Islam? It’s like admiring someone who has become an expert in torture. it is irrelevant and detracts from the goal of terminating the relentless creep of that Ideology. The only way of modernizing it is to go back to the Meccan Koran and discover that when Mohammad was beaten up on his way to Medina somehow he suffered the same kind of concussions that football players suffer that condemn them to be violent later in life. Research the workings of the brain by Dr. Daniel Amen and others that specialize in this discipline. It could be a way of reversing the inevitable if those that are trying to eliminate the violence and genocide can point to this possibility.

March 3, 2016 – Khaled Abou El Fadl, Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor in Islamic Law, has been named to the 2016 list of The Muslim 500: The World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims, which identifies individuals who have the power to create change that will have a significant impact on the Muslim world. The publication selects individuals from a field of 13 categories of influence, including scholarly, political, business, arts and culture, media, science and technology, and several others.
Professor Abou El Fadl, who was recognized for his significant contributions to the study and cultivation of Islamic knowledge and Muslim culture, was among 77 outstanding scholars worldwide who were named to The Muslim 500, and among only six in the United States. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on Islamic law and a prominent scholar in the field of human rights.

“The Great Theft”…..very apt, with Mohammed’s criminal track record.
“Rebellion and Violence in Islamic Law”……Plenty of material there!
“The Place of Tolerance In Islam”…….NOT plenty of material there!
“Islam and the Challenge of Democracy”….I’m glad this person admits that Democracy is a challenge to islam.
“Speaking In God’s Name”….doesn’t he really mean ‘Allah’? I don’t think anyone else’s idea of ‘God’ has much to do with islam.
