On May 1, 2018, we will have the seventh anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on American soil that took almost 3,000 lives; these were attacks that bin Laden later described as a “martyrdom operation.”[1] One day after he had been killed bin Laden was buried at sea from a ship of the United States Navy.[2] Let’s take a look back at that event.
On May 1, 2011, late in the evening, President Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed by American forces. President Obama said that bin Laden was
…the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children… Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims…So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.[3]
On May 4, 2011, President Obama was interviewed by the CBS program 60 Minutes. Here is what he had to say about bin Laden:
Obviously bin Laden had been not only a symbol of terrorism, but a mass murderer who’s eluded justice for so long, and so many families who had been affected I think had given up hope. And for us to be able to definitively say, “We got the man who caused thousands of deaths here in the United States and who had been the rallying point for a violent extremist jihad around the world” was something that I think all of us were profoundly grateful to be a part of.[4]
Obama ended this interview with these thoughts:
As nervous as I was about this whole process, the one thing I didn’t lose sleep over was the possibility of taking bin Laden out. Justice was done. And I think that anyone who would question that the perpetrator of mass murder on American soil didn’t deserve what he got needs to have their head examined.[5]
But in this interview, Obama also had this to say about the sea burial of bin Laden:
We thought it was important to think through ahead of time how we would dispose of the body if he were killed in the compound. And I think that what we tried to do was, consulting with experts in Islamic law and ritual, to find something that was appropriate that was respectful [my emphasis] of the body.[6]
A more detailed explanation about the sea burial had been given in a press briefing on May 2, 2011 by John Brennan, then-Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism. In this explanation, Brennan emphasized the extensive pre-planning and how “Islamic law” had been the major concern in dealing with bin Laden’s body:
The disposal of — the burial of bin Laden’s remains was done in strict conformance with Islamist precepts and practices. It was prepared in accordance with the Islamic requirements. We early on made provisions for that type of burial, and we wanted to make sure that it was going to be done, again, in strict conformance. So it was taken care of in the appropriate way… It took place earlier today our time…The COAs – the course of action and the subsequent decisions that would have to be made have been developed over the course of the last several months. Senior officials, and there was a working group that was working this on a regular basis, if not a daily basis, over the last several weeks, looking at every decision and based on what type of scenario would unfold, what actions and decisions would be made. It was looked at from the standpoint of if we captured him, what will we do with him? Where would he go? If he was killed, what will we do with him, and where would he go? And it was determined that it was in the best interests of all involved that this burial take place, again, according to Islamic requirements, at sea…there is the requirement in Islamic law that an individual be buried within 24 hours. Went inside of Pakistan, carried out the operation, he was killed, he was removed from Pakistan. There were certain steps that had to be taken because of the nature of the operation, and we wanted to make sure we were able to do that in the time period allotted for it. Going to another country, making those arrangements, requirements, would have exceeded that time period, in our view. And so, therefore, we thought that the best way to ensure that his body was given an appropriate Islamic burial was to take those actions that would allow us to do that burial at sea.[7]
Brennan said that after bin Laden had been killed, “There were certain steps that had to be taken,” and they had to make sure that those steps were taken within “the time period allotted for it.” So according to Brennan, the “Islamic law” that required that an individual be buried within 24 hours after death also limited the amount of time for any forensic examination of the body because there had to be time allowed for the burial preparations of that body!
During this May 2nd press briefing, Brennan was also asked if he had consulted with a “Muslim expert” about this sea burial. Brennan replied,
We consulted the appropriate specialists and experts, and there was unanimity that this would be the best way to handle that.
Brennan refused to identify any of these “specialists and experts.”
However, there were many Muslim experts that disagreed with Brennan at the time and said that this burial did not conform to Islamic law: e.g., Mohammed al-Qubaisi, the highest religious law official in Dubai; Abdul-Sattar al-Janabi, an Islamic scholar from Iraq; the former Mufti of Egypt, Shaykh Nasr Farid Wasiland; and Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb.[8] This is quite an impressive array of experts disagreeing with Brennan’s unnamed “specialists and experts.”
And according to U.S. Navy regulations, there are only a few “classes of individuals” who are eligible for “At Sea Disposition”:
- Members of the uniformed services.
- Retired members of the uniformed services.
- Members of the uniformed services discharged under honorable conditions.
- U.S. civilian marine personnel of the Military Sealift Command.
- Dependents of members and former members of the uniformed services
- Other U.S. citizens who are determined eligible by the Chief of Naval Operations for at sea committal due to notable service or outstanding contributions to the United States.[9]
Since bin Laden did not fall into any of these “classes of individuals,” apparently the Obama administration felt that its version of “Islamic law” took precedence over U.S. Navy regulations.
So what does a “traditional” Islamic burial at sea from a ship of the United States Navy consist of? For that we need to look at the official United States Navy manual titled Navy Military Funerals (NAVPERS 15555D, Revised 1999).[10] In “Appendix E” of that manual we find the “Service for the Committal of a Person of the Muslim Faith.” This “Appendix E” is presented below. But before reading it, keep in mind the following about this service:
- Those gathered to pray have to be facing Mecca, and as the body is lowered into the sea, its face must also be facing Mecca.
- The first chapter of the Koran, Al-Fatihah, is recited – this chapter states that Allah is angry with the Jews, and the Christians have gone astray.
- If there is more than one body, those of the men shall be placed nearest to the appointed leader, and those of the women furthest away. This second-class treatment of women is straight out of a Shafi’i manual of Sharia Law.[11]
- Those attending the funeral were not there as mere observers, they were actually there as “intercessors” for bin Laden. This means that they were there to petition for and pray in favor of bin Laden.
Here is “Appendix E”:
NAVY MILITARY FUNERALS (NAVPERS 15555D)
APPENDIX E
SERVICE FOR THE COMMITTAL OF A PERSON OF THE MUSLIM FAITH
- During the Committal service, if for a person of the Islamic faith, the commanding officer or such person appointed by the commanding officer shall ensure that the service is set up as follows:
–It is not recommended to use a casket unless there is a need for it. The body must have been washed and wrapped as required for the bodies of muslims [sic].
–Plan the setting so that those who have gathered to pray will be facing toward Mecca, with the appointed leader in front facing them.
–Place the body (or bodies) in between the congregation and the appointed leader in such a way that the body is parallel to the congregation and so that, from the point of view of the congregation, the body’s head is to the right.
–The appointed leader should face the congregation and stand by the middle of the body if the deceased is a man and by the shoulder if the deceased is a woman.
–If there is more than one body, then they should be put one in front of the other, those of the men nearest to the appointed leader, and those of the women furthest away.
- If Muslims are present, permit them to come forward and perform the formal funeral prayer (Allahu Akbar) while others stand and pray silently.
- Al-Fatihah
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to God, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment. Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose portion is not wrath, and who go not astray.[[12]]
- Supplication of Funeral Prayer
O Allah, forgive our people who are still alive and who have passed away, forgive those who are present here an [sic] those who are absent, forgive our young and our elderly, forgive our males and females. O Allah, the one whom you wish to keep alive from among us make him alive according to Islam, and anyone whom you wish to die from among us, let him die in belief and faith. O Allah, do not deprive us from his reward and do not put us in hardship or any type of trial after his death.
O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, pardon him, grant him security, provide him a nice place and spacious lodgings, wash him (off from his sins) with water, snow and ice, purify him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, replace his present abode with a better one, replace his present family with a better one, replace his present partner with a better one, make him enter paradise and save him from the trials of grave and the punishment of hell.
O Allah, you are its Lord, you have created it, and you have guided it towards Islam, and you have taken out his soul and you know best about its secret and open deeds. We have come as intercessors, so forgive him.
O Allah, grant us good in this life and good in the life to come, and save us from the torment of hell.
- Supplication at the Committal site:
(Lower the body into the water at this time, in such a way that the face is toward Ka’aba (in Saudi Arabia)).
O Allah, this is your servant who is now your guest, and you are the best of hosts. Forgive him and expand his entrance.
So for a person repeatedly named as a “mass murder” by President Obama, and responsible for the deaths of almost 3,000 innocent people on American soil, the focus of the burial service was on a “traditional” Islamic burial that was “respectful of the body,” that disparaged Jews and Christians, that referred to Bin Laden as Allah’s “servant,” that prayed for Bin Laden to enter Paradise, and that adhered to the dictates of “Islamic law.”
In November of 2012, the Associated Press used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain heavily redacted internal e-mails that were exchanged among U.S. military officials about this sea burial. Here is some of the information obtained from those e-mails[13]:
- No sailors watched bin Laden’s burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson.
- Fewer than a dozen of the ship’s leadership was informed of the burial.
- According to a May 2nde-mail from Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette,
Traditional procedures for Islamic burial was [sic] followed…The deceased’s body was washed (ablution) then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased’s body slid into the sea.
The Defense Department stated that none of the following could be located:
- Any images of bin Laden’s body on the USS Carl Vinson. [It was later reported that 11 days after bin Laden was killed all photographs of the body were supposed to have been destroyed or turned over to the CIA.[14]]
- Bin Laden’s death certificate, autopsy report or results of DNA identification tests. [The Obama administration’s concern about complying with “Islamic law” virtually precluded the chance for a thorough autopsy to be done. With regard to the DNA tests, we know that on May 2, 2011 such tests had been done because this was so stated by a “Senior Intelligence Official” in a Department of Defense background briefing that same day.[15]]
- Any pre-raid materials discussing how the government planned to dispose of bin Laden’s body if he were killed. [This is interesting in light of the statements made above by President Obama and John Brennan about the extensive contingency planning.]
During the previously mentioned DOD Background Briefing on May 2, 2011, a reporter had asked a question that has subsequently been on the minds of observers for many years:
Who actually performed the rituals, the cleaning of his body? Were they American service members? And why all this for a fellow who most of the world determined was not a very good Muslim anyway? And was in fact a cold blooded killer?
Geoff Morrell, then-Pentagon Press Secretary, replied, “I don’t think we care to get into those details.”[16]
So according to the Obama administration, Osama bin Laden was a “mass murderer” who was not even a “Muslim leader.” Yet President Obama thought it was important enough to be “respectful” of bin Laden’s body that there was extensive pre-planning and consultation with “experts in Islamic law and ritual” to ensure that bin Laden was accorded a funeral that conformed to “Islamic law.” However, noted Muslim scholars said this funeral actually violated Islamic law, and, as we saw, it also violated U.S. Navy regulations. And when more information was requested, there were gaping holes in the information made available and relevant records went missing.
Why all this for such a fellow? The “most transparent administration in history” was not interested in those “details.”

No, Hugo. That is the sort of VINDICTIVE UNCIVILIZED BEHAVIOR for which we condemn our enemies.
Western countries live by the highest standards of ethics of human rights, and one of them is a decent funeral.
Shame on you for your vicious suggestion.

I disagree. Someone who plots mass murder deserves no such consideration. Also, in my opinion, paying heed to Islamic sensitivities is simply taken as a sign of weakness by the enemy. Sending a clear-cut message of utter distain is the only appropriate response. Weakness encourages more aggression.

Several years ago the Kuffir Space Gods had the bright idea of sending a Muslim (a Malay) into space. (Why? Some sort of outreach?) Only the Kuffirs could do such a thing because, on their own, the Muslims could never even think of such an adventure. Along the same lines that the new Muslim mega-clock in Mecca could never have been built without the ingenuity of the Kuffir. “O Allah [as in ‘I’ll hava Coke,’ or ‘I’ll hava Pepsi’], why have you cursed the best of people [the Quran-inspired descriptor used by Muslims to identify themselves] with no brains, but have amply supplied the infidels with knowledge & clear thinking, leaving us so ashamed and in poverty.”
But the Malaysian Space Agency (huh? who knew such an agency even existed!), a part of the Dept of Islamic Development Malaysia (cough, cough, “Islamic Development” exists in the same universe as “dry water”), wrestled with the greatest technical problem of the entire then-upcoming flight of going beyond the earth’s atmosphere. That problem, How to face Mecca from outer space?
That question – yes, that question – was the priority.
The result, A Guideline of Performing Ibadah at the International Space Station (ISS), which concludes, “It is hoped that this guideline could assist the Muslim Astronaut to ensure the success of the mission and at the same time attaining the redha (pleasure) of Allah SWT.”
Get that? The purpose of this nonsensical “guideline” (giggle) is to help the Muslim “ensure the success of the mission.”
This pdf guideline is found here,
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5EUoe7D0v_pOUk1N0tVSVc0emc/view
This guideline also gives instruction on how to handle death in space. In case the deceased cannot “be brought to Earth for normal funeral process,” then “the deceased should be buried in space with a simple funeral process.”
Whew! A load off my mind. Leave it to the Muslim to come up with the really, really penetrating questions facing us all.
Except, how is one “buried” in space?
Lu says
Very funny response indeed. I recall that conundrum – facing Mecca from the outer space.
How inane is that.
Broader ramifications of this “issue” are – just many. It it was for the Islamic world, none of our current science, technology, art – generally what we call the Western Civilization – would have ever existed, originated, developed.
mortimer says
The former president Obama did not hate Jews and Christians nor was he a practicing Muslim. His understanding of Islam was overly optimistic and naïve. He had no idea of the contents of the Islamic texts and his exposure to Islam appears to have been to the rituals only which he did not fully comprehend.

The US government did what was done with the remains of a number of Nazis… they were buried in water to prevent shrines from being erected in future.
A cremation was not acceptable to Muslims. A dignified proper funeral at sea was acceptable, though technically not perfect according to Islamic law.
There was no other choice. The grave of OBL would have become a shrine and site of a mosque from which jihad would have been preached ad infinitum.
J D S says
But but but…did you read Robert’s notation of who the navy is authorized to be buried st sea …I guess they had to write and approve a new regulation to do this…Oh I forgot ..the commander in chief at the time was Obama and of course he quickly authorized it….

Shouldn’t the world deserve to know for sure that this monster (Yes, monster) was actually disposed of? Now, if a known bodyguard of OBL is extant, I wonder if he has been interviewed as to whether or not OSL actually died in Pakistan, or was a body double killed? Or did OBL die of kidney failure in a remote cave in downtown middle east. Or is he living quietly in the Caribbean as some have claimed. I really would like to know the answer to these questions. Has anybody heard about this person? Are there any enterprising journalists left or are they all too frightened to dig for the really good stuff?
Walter Sieruk says
It’s now been seven years since the extermination of the heinous Islamic villain, Osama bin Laden, by those brave and heroic Navy SEAL’s. Then after bin Laden’s elimination he was buried at sea. There had been by Muslim clerics, such as the imams ,who had the gall they complain the bin laden did not revived and proper Islamic burial because he was buried in the ocean and all Muslim according to Islamic tradition. For Muslims are buried under the ground and not at sea. To that outlandish statement, made by the Muslim clerics may be answered in in two complementary ways. First, the sea burial that bin Laden received was a lot more dignified and respectful then the type of “burial” that many of the victims of murderous affront had that occurred on September 11, 2001.. Many of the people who were murdered on 9/11 only had a few bones and teeth left. In contrast the body of bin laden was buried mostly intact. Second ,after 9/11 many Muslim apologists for Islam ,in America ,many times had made the claim that Osama bin Laden was not real Muslim and that he just “Hijacked the peaceful religion of Islam “ for “politics.” If that’s actually the case and not some kind of cover-up to hide the truth from the American public then all those Muslim clerics really had nothing to complain about if that claim is true that bin Laden was not a “real Muslim.”
Musalmaanmasala says
Why all the “dignified and respectful” arrangements to appease the Islamic cult for an unrepentant mass murderer who was surely going to hell for his deeds?

I think it’s more about advertising Islam and all these imams, et al. who crave attention. Someone above mentions the Malay Muslim who was sent up to the ISS and there was all this talk about how he would pray facing Mecca while up in space. It’s not that they care much about Bin Laden but rather exposing all things Islam and quibbling among Islamic “experts.”
Btw, I read an article last year by one of the miltary guys involved and he said that Bin Laden was shot up with so many holes by the soldiers even though he was already dead. He said this is the reason he was buried at sea…because there wasn’t much left to him. Who knows what the real story is but the article didn’t get mainstream news traction.

Releasing the name of the SEAL Team that killed Osama bin Laden—is a
singular wrong that can never be excused—who knows the reasoning
behind this.
SEAL Team 6, as we know now, killed Osama bin Laden.
The White House, through Vice-President Biden, in an unprecedented act,
in a breach of national security, announced this SEAL Team 6 had been
the specific team that had killed Osama bin Laden.
No one can doubt Team 6 personnel were in sincere fear for their family
members.
Now considering that the operational security in Afghanistan, including
the sharing of tactical information with Afghan forces, may have been
compromised by Taliban, or their informants—the landing zone and
passengers could have been known, maybe the Taliban were able to
accurately target the forces of SEAL Team 6.
As members of SEAL Team 6 engaged in another covert raid in Afghanistan.
As they approached the drop zone, Taliban forces attacked using rocket
propelled grenades. The large helicopter was hit, crashed, killing 30
Americans and eight Afghans. It is the single largest one day loss of
life in the history of Naval Special Warfare division and of the entire
12-year Afghanistan campaign.
Yes, President Obama showed considerations towards Muslims sensitivities.
He showed questionable consideration for the sensitivities of these Seals
and their families.

They should have strapped him to a cruise missile and sent him to ISIS special delivery.

Sounds like you’re trying to use common sense here and that will not be allowed.
Edward Cline says
This killer ought to have been chopped into pieces and then dumped into the water to feed the sharks.
Raja says
Ed, With all due respect to you, that makes no difference. It wasn’t that his body was wrapped with steel and carbon fittings and sheetings. The sharks would have done the job in a few minutes. I don’t know how the US govt will spin this stuff to appease the Muslims?

I don’t believe that it was bin laden that was killed. The face of him was photoshopped after it was done – Obama’s reliance on photoshopped birth certificate and then a photoshopped bin laden. AND the idea that a murdering thug should be given honor with a burial according to Islamic scriptures is beyond the pale. I hope that at least one sailor took a piss over the ship – but even at that – I doubt the body was bin Ladens. When did Obama ever do something against islam?
BC says
Respectful? Are they not always telling us terrorism has nothing to do with Islam? They should have chopped him up and fed him to the sharks
OldFatBaldSociallyIneptRon says
Osama’s naked corpse should’ve been preserved standing upright in a giant jar filled with Formaldehyde and displayed for eternity at the 9/11 Memorial. Having your family photo taken standing next to the pickled Saudi should have been an American tradition.
Carolyne says
Eweee. Couldn’t he at least have a loincloth? I’m sure his family jewels were negligible, as most Muslim men’s are, but I don’t want a memento with them in a picture.
Rick Spencer says
The official ‘killing of Osama bin Laden’ story is BS de luxe. As is the ‘9/11 attack’ story.
After his renal-failure death in Afghanistan in December 2001, he was ‘kept alive’ by the CIA and their lackeys in governments and media.
Bin Laden, most surely, was not killed by US Special Forces on May 2nd, 2011.

………………..
Another vile 9/11 “Truther” claiming that Jihad does not exist, but was just pulled off by the CIA to ‘make Muslims look bad’. Is he also claiming that all 33,000+ Jihad terror attacks were done by the filthy Infideles? *Ugh*.

Look at the difference in the treatment of osama’s dead body…if indeed, it was him…and that of Kaddaffi.
The Libyan leader was killed and his body disrespected in a most terrible way…by the moslims who killed him.
bin laden was killed by members of the Navy as a moslim terrorist, mass murderer. But his dead body was treated with the utmost respect, reserved for royalty and high officials of government on the orders and at the direction of other moslims who had not really wished him dead. Recall the video, the facial expressions, and the news reports of the operation at the time.
Even with all of that special prep and treatment, he still went straight to hell.
Bill Shackelford says
Everyone has a slightly different take on what occurred: Here is mine. First, I doubt that the killing of Bin- Laden and the details of his burial were faked. I think President Obama’s version was accurate: he WAS killed by Seal Team 6, and the burial was designed to minimize the angst that would potentially surface in the Muslim world. Secondly, I do not believe that Obama was or is a Muslim, nor for that matter, a Christian; he claims to pray to the Christian God, but in truth, he has no real belief in any form or religion. (Nor do I, but I make no such claim. I live in America, where citizens are free to believe or not believe).
As to where his heart is/was, President Obama’s greatest fault was trying to satiate everyone; Muslims, Christians, Jews, non-believers, etc. As to Islam, he was, like his predecessor, naive. (Remember President Bush – the day after 9/11, making the politically correct statement that “Islam is a religion of peace”?) Both presidents failed to identify tyranny for what it is, and in doing so, became enablers. Obama in particular, became an enabler of a belief system that dates to the Seventh Century. What I WISH he had done was refer to our Constitution: The first 10 words of our First Amendment reads “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”: What this profound statement means is America must never become a THEOCRACY.! Islam is by it’s very nature, a theocracy, and for that reason, Islam and America are forever at odds. President Obama was in thrall to political correctness, a cancer every bit as dangerous as tyranny.
And THAT, by-the-way, is the reason we now have a non-traditional president. No matter what his detractors may say about him, President Trump is not a slave to PC. He has what his predecessors lacked; the COURAGE to identify tyranny for what it is. (I wish he would use the word T-Y-R-A N-N-Y). When he described our immigration policy as a “Trojan Horse”, he displayed COURAGE! And THAT is why Donald Trump is now “President Trump.” . . . .

Yes–why should anyone worry about respecting these vicious Jihadists?
