Increasingly preoccupied as he is with his dream of restoring the Ottoman caliphate, Erdogan recently said: “We say at every opportunity we have that Syria, Iraq and other places in the geography [map] in our hearts are no different from our own homeland. We are struggling so that a foreign flag will not be waved anywhere where adhan [Islamic call to prayer in mosques] is recited.”
That includes Greece.
“Turkish fighter jets harass Tsipras’s helicopter,” Ekathimerini, April 17, 2018 (thanks to George):
Two Turkish fighter aircraft reportedly harassed the Chinook helicopter carrying Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Greek Armed Forces Chief Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis as they were flying from the islet of Ro to Rhodes on Tuesday afternoon.
The Turkish fighter jets, flying at an altitude of 10,000 feet, asked the Greek helicopter pilot, which at that moment was at 1,500 feet, to provide flight details, according to defense sources.
The pilot immediately informed the prime minister and the HNDGS Chief and alerted the Greek air force which dispatched two fighter jets, which approached the area at 20,000 feet. The Turkish aircraft retreated.
Speaking earlier from the southeastern Aegean island of Kastellorizo earlier in the day, Tsipras said Greece will defend its principles “in any way it can… and will not cede an inch of territory,” in an apparent dig at recent provocations from Turkey….

Erdogan is worth the watching. Surprised he hasn’t taken over southern Cyprus yet. After all Turkey has the north.
Nobody helped Cyprus when she lost the north, so I doubt anyone will bother if the south is taken.
Baucent says
I’m not so sure of that. After the weak Western response to Crimea, there may be more steel and will to prevent more “annexations” from the South China sea to Cyprus. Erdee would love to overrun Cyprus, but there is a British air force base there which complicates things. He is more likely to widen his border into Syria for “security reasons”. He can have romantic thoughts about the old empire, but these days the people living in those regions would regard the Turk as a foreign invader.

I don’t know why the Turks shouldn’t have Syria, that would keep them busy and be a huge drain on their economy, they could rebuild Syria with their taxpayer money.. (that alone would upset the turkish population … & could lead to an anti Erdogan Coo)
The US could help the Kurds and be ruthless with that, making a corridor to the Med
Turks being Sunni would have to deal with the Shites, that would sort Hesbolla & Iran ….
Asadd would be surrounded ..
Being part of NATO, Turkey would have to sort the Russians …. (another drain on their economy)
Being part of NATO Turkey wouldn’t get very far with attacking Israel, or at least give NATO a chance to kick them out .
The Turks would be to busy to harass Greece
It makes sense all round ………

It would devaste the surviving Christian community in Syria–this would not be a good thing.

Either Greece should leave NATO in protest, or demand expulsion of Turkey from that organization. Their common membership there serves no purpose and sooner or later they will clash.

Salomon, the Muslim slave raids on Ireland were terrible, but I have never heard anywhere near the 1.6 million figure you cite. Do you have links? It is important for us to be scrupulous. As of 1700, the entire estimated population of Ireland was just 3 million.

If Greece were to by force block the influx of Muslim boat people, the Greeks would be politically attcked by the EU and possibly attacked militarily by the vile Turks. Now that the House of Saud is in control of the Trump presidency, our US State Department would do nothing to aid Greece just as it did nothing when the Turks invaded Cyprus and annexed 42% of that sovereign nation.

Richard says
Yes, the Arabs were not exactly happy with Turkish rule of rape and pillage prior to World War I. The Arabs were in armed revolt at the time and the great Muslim military genius who had reconquered the Holy Land from the Christians nine centuries earlier was a Kurd. The Turkish caliphs were not exactly kind to their own families. The reigning Caliph’s sons grew up kept in the haram. When the reigning Caliph died, his eldest son had all his dear brothers strangled. The more you learn about Islam, the more horrific it is. Their willingness to die for their religion is admirable. I cant help wishing they all would.

Muslim Arabs love rape and pillage. They just did not want to be the victims of oppression themselves.

Unfortunately this left wing Greek prime minister is a traitor to Greece. He has given Greece’s sovereignty to German Bankers, he has driven Greece to the ground by the German Austerity, flooded Greece with these illegal Muslim scums. If the Turks shot down prime minister Greece’s helicopter, most Greeks will celebrate.
anyway elections are due next year in Greece, he will be gone, let’s see what happens. As for the Turks, if turkey attacks Greece, there a plenty of Greeks in Australia, America, Canada, Germany, expect Greek backlash on Turks anywhere. As for other NATO countries, they won’t assist Greece. Maybe the only countries might assist Greece, is Serbia, Bulgaria, and maybe Israel and Egypt.
Richard says
“Maybe the only countries might assist Greece, is Serbia, Bulgaria, and maybe Israel and Egypt.”
You forget Russia here. The Russians would quite like to retake Constantinople.
At present the Russian strategy of appeasing Turkey is designed to make Turkey overreach so that it gets pushed out of NATO. Once Turkey is out of NATO Russia will have a freer hand.
gravenimage says
I think Russian appeasment is, sadly, the real thing. After all, Putin is also enabling a nuclear Iran. No indication at all that they intend to attack Turkey.

Given it’s only a month since the EU repeated its mantra of readiness for Turkish membership a lot is revealed about the EU’s couldn’t-care-less position on two CURRENT members, Greece and Cyprus and the third factor; Britain’s sovereign base in Akrotiri. Further, it’s a mere year since the European Reconstruction and Development Bank (of which Britain and the EU are principle shareholders) was funding a Turkish steelmaker during the same week that steel jobs were being lost in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Greeks should know. Since the Ottomans totally overran them. Meanwhile, Juncker et al. want Turkey to join the EU. If that should happen. The EU will collapse. Endlessly seeking to justify its illegitimate foundations, including those from conquest and seizure of much of the territory of Byzantium, Turkey today fabricates and greatly exaggerates historical associations between Seljuk Turks and the ancestral peoples of the Bulgarian peninsula and more coastal regions of the Anatolian peninsula. Dividends from the Armenian massacre, in addition to slaughtering about a million Armenian Christians and forced exodus of many others, include incorporation of the better half of beautiful Armenia’s former lands.
The 1923 Treaty of Lausanne entailed a forced population exchange of Turks and Greeks, abiding enemies, as well as both ceding territory. Overall, Turkey really got the better of that dodgy deal. However it still cannot accept that Greece was ceded the Aegean islands as part of a sincere international reconciliation effort by the abortive League of Nations.
Recently, an irate but prominent Russian nationalist (not that bore Zhironvsky) stated his country ought modify all its maps to see the name Istanbul revert to that of Constantinople. It’s not the first time this idea has been floated by Russia. While there may have been merit to incorporating Turkey within NATO during the Soviet era, that time has long passed, particularly in view of Erdogan’s increasingly outrageous posturing and statements. However, in its wisdom, NATO not only retains Turkey’s membership but does little or nothing to respond to its increasingly menacing behaviour, of which this harassment of Greece’s PM — little short of an act of war — is but one further example. There’s also that pesky little problem of approximately 150 tactical nuclear weapons, supposedly protected by “codes”, at the Incirlik Air Base in Southern Turkey. What a mess. This Russian idea does have merit, and not only for its symbolism.
