“France vows pushback against U.S. sanctions on Iran,” Reuters, May 11, 2018:
PARIS – France pledged on Friday to push back against the threat of US sanctions against French companies doing business with Iran, in the wake of Washington’s withdrawal from the international nuclear agreement with Tehran.
The French government is seeking waivers and longer transition periods from the United States for companies such as Renault and Total, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said, while pressing for European Union measures to improve the bloc’s “economic sovereignty” in the longer term.
“It’s time that European countries opened their eyes,” Le Maire said on Europe 1 radio….

RT article states that “Trump’s unilateral abrogation of the international treaty shows disdain for European concerns.”

_____
“European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said it was time for the EU to “replace the United States” and show international leadership.”
Jean-Claude Juncker wants in fact to replace the US with Iran a totalitarian state governed by the mullahs. Does he deserve respect or disdain?
_____
Defending the nuclear accord, Germany’s Merkel also said Europe must take its destiny into its own hands as the US can no longer be relied upon.
According to Merkel, the US can no longer be relied upon. Which country will she rely upon from now on? Iran?
Mark Swan says
christianblood,
You bring up interesting phenomenon.
The European Union is not going to be about independent Countries—it will
morph very shortly into a mega economy—with Germany leading by default.
This will not be the contemporary Europe we have all assumed we knew.
This new Europe will be an extremely powerful conglomerate of countries that
have joined together for a common effort—they will be formidable and loose
their benign qualities, exercise self interests and controlling desires—peaceful
at first, not so for ever.
Watch Europe, especially Germany and those who want it to lead—this is
real and now.
With America vacillating and divided—with Russia and China posturing —
Europe is being propelled into its place in the World.
The winds of change are blowing.
Ren says
@Mark Swan
“This new Europe will be an extremely powerful conglomerate of countries that
have joined together for a common effort…”
Were you talking about the EU leaders that have not been elected by the people but yet make decisions on their fate? That’s promising.
Westman says
Sorry Mark, can’t buy it.
The cost of Islam, Brexit, assuming the real cost of defense (NATO or an EU military), and divisions will limit the growth of the EU. Europe has been subsidized since WWII and that will be over before Trump is out of office. Take an additional 4 or 5% of a nation’s economy and another 2% or so for permanent Islamic welfare and see what a difference it makes.
The economy of Europe is more likely to decline.
christianblood says
Mark Swan
You made good points, the winds of change are blowing but I think as it stands today, Europe doesn’t have the will power to stand on its own yet. It may take a few more decades before it finally comes to that.
Ren says
@christianblood
Europe has been recently weaken by the invasion of muslim migrants. And there are more to come…
Mark Swan says
Westman,
Let us at least hope that Europe’s economy remains stable.
As a single country, the US is the biggest economy in the world.
But you could easily argue that the countries of the European Union
make for one big economy. Indeed, you would be arguing that it’s the
world’s largest economy.
The adjusted GDP of the 28 EU member nations is bigger than both
China and the US, the traditional list of the world’s economic super
powers.
In nominal U.S. dollar terms, the European Union (plus Norway,
Switzerland, Iceland) accounted for 25.4% of world output in 2014
according to data from the International Monetary Fund. That was
greater than America’s share (22.5%) and well in excess of China’s
—13.4%.
The EU consumer is also on top.
The EU, plus periphery nations, accounted for 28.5% of all consumer
spending in 2014, above both the 26.6% spent by US consumers and
the 15.6% spent by the emerging economies of the Brazil, Russia,
India and China combined. This attracts global companies to the
region.
Gaining access to wealthy consumers is among the primary reasons
that US companies venture overseas, and hence the continued
attraction of Europe to US firms.
Mark Swan says
christianblood,
You are correct about how willing Europe is, for now, to stand
on its own.
Outside and inside forces may bring about events that so concern
them that they quickly find not only the will but the way as well.
I see them reconfiguring their union in such a way as to make all
the difference in political and economic success. I see the World
propelling them onto the World stage, and them taking the lead role,
if need be.
These are not the people to be staying in the shadows forever.
They are, in fact, descendent from strong stock.
Bindon Blood says
The EU was created to become a huge Euro/ Islamic power bloc, its primary purpose being to topple America and be the most powerful entity on the planet. It is now showing its hand. The EU ,unless stopped, will acquire its own armed forces and wags war on all who oppose it.
This is the fourth reich. National Socialism and Germany’s ambition to rule Europe and expand ever Eastward never went away. The EU is National Socialism adapted for the modern world. Germany will direct, she thinks, the new post national Europe. Europe and much of the Islamic world will be a huge borderless entity. How Germany plans to control Islam is still a mystery but even in WW2 the two ideologies found much common ground.
Once again the Jews will be under threat Of destruction. Can it really be a coincidence that Germany and France are embracing an ideology with the same hatred of Jews as German and French fascism? The Jews and Israel are a stumbling bloc to the project
The EU is evil The US must start work on its destruction without delay.

Mark Swan says
Ren,
No one can argue that Some European Countries have made huge
mistakes in allowing Muslim migrants into their culture, this could
very well be one of the stimulus to change. Leadership that we see now,
it can be replaced, because of several events that are perceived to be
threatening—people will yield to strong leadership when the
perception of such events is wide spread enough.
Remember we did not elect Mrs. Clinton even though the entire World
thought it a done deal. President Trump has been and still is assailed
from all directions and still prevails as our elected president, and most
effectively despite of the establishments resistance.
Things can and do change.
Ren says
@Mark Swan
How many terrorist acts will it take for European countries to change their leadership?
I think this is a matter of mindset more than a matter of perception of reality.
Americans voted for Trump because they are being more pragmatic than the Europeans that are more into political correctness, let’s say.
Only a few European countries such as Hungary realizes that there is an issue with muslim migrants. The rest of European countries are ok with islam, considering it as a legitimate religion while it is not.
Mark Swan says
Yes Ren, Europe has suffered far too many Muslim attacks.
America saw nearly three thousand people die in one day,
other smaller attacks, and all the attempted attacks—we lost
many thousands more in Afghanistan and Iraq, some in other
places—still half the country wanted Mrs. Clinton to be
Elected President.
The whole Western World promotes Political Correctness—
America is no different.
The intent of Islam and its various forms of jihad are obvious
to you and I—how much longer can these wrong minded leaders
in Europe, prevent, those who see more of Muslims than they
want to, already, from saying it is enough.
People are just people—give the Europeans as much credit as
anyone else.
The Muslims will convince the Europeans—just by being
Muslims. But that has not happen yet in America either—
not yet.
Events that make this pet Muslim thing pale by comparison
can cause all the Muslim pushiness to snap-back reeling in
reality. Fake victimization will not prop them-up forever.
Time always moves forward—it is wait and see
Ren says
@Mark Swan
Well ok. Just wait and see if Europe will go down the drain or it will rise up.

The two biggest problems in the world today are the US’s liberal imperialism and their islamic, Wahhabi Jihadist allies and these two have a symbiotic relationship and are collaborating. Iran is deeply hated by the US empire not because of because of terrorism, that is a lie and a cover and only a child would be believe it but because Iran won’t be a puppet for the US empire. As for Russia, the hatred of Russia by the West is centuries old and the West invaded Russia five times in the last 250 years to conquer it and subdue it but they lost it all.
Today, led by the “exceptional” US, (just like their “super race” German cousins did under the leadership of Hitler a few decades back) the West is massing their transgendered, satanic armies at the Russian Western borders but Russia vowed that no more wars against Russia will be fought in Russia’s borders! As for Iran,
According to the (thereligionofpeace.com) 32320 deadly islamic terrorist attacks have been carried out since 9/11. Show me a single one of them perpetrated or carried out by Iranians???
The latest attacks in Paris France killed two and wounded many more yesterday and in Indonesia the Jihadists murdered Ten Christians in a church and neither attacks was carried out not by Iran or Shiites by the US’s Sunni jihadist buddies!

I think that there is a valid argument to be made that, since the end of WW ii, large swathes of our planet have supped at our economic table and lived in the shelter of our military shield. That our supposed allies, such as La Belle Republique can act with such perfidy and petulance tells me that all those American crosses in Normandy and elsewhere no longer carry any more importance than where their next baquette is coming from.

POLITICAL MYOPIA !
Mark Swan says
Today, the international monetary system revolves around
the American dollar.
Due to undisciplined borrowing, America has become a debtor
to other nations—including competitors and potential enemies.
America is 16 trillion dollars in debt—this spiraling debt has
undermined confidence in the U.S. dollar, and borrowing money
will impose limits on America’s political and military options
if a crisis arises.
Efforts by the U.S. Treasury to weaken the dollar (reduce its value)
in order to reduce the amount of money owed to lending nations is
not appreciated by those nations because it threatens the amount of
wealth they hold in American dollars.
This has generated a real desire on the part of other nations to
create an alternative currency to the U.S. dollar. In fact, America’s
biggest economic competitors—are doing everything possible to
end the U.S. monetary monopoly.
America’s economic power maybe challenged as confidence in the
dollar declines and trust in America’s ability to lead and be a model
for the world is lost.
The Euro waits in the wings, perhaps as an alternative to the dollar.
Flavius Claudius Iulianus says
So are you implying that the world is “supping at the American table?”
Indiana Tom says
Much of it is. NATO, SEATO, UN, one way trade deals, list goes on. A lot of these countries would not be able to have the sophisticated socialism they enjoy if they had to pay for their own defence.
Flavius Claudius Iulianus says
Let me tell you about a conversation I had with an American A-10 pilot. I went to a big airshow and the US military had sent up some aircraft with their pilots. I had an interesting conversation with this gentleman. He showed me his amazing aircraft and we then talked politics. It was a subject I tried to avoid but he was quite adamant in making his views known.
Clearly he loved his flying machine. The A-10, a cost effective system that did its specific job and protected its pilots. (Not like the F-35 that has already completed its mission of denuding foreign government coffers of billions before ever being built!)
Clearly he loved his country and loved flying. What shocked me was how he freely expressed his hatred of “the generals” and those in the industries that supplied your military. (I would assume that you would call it the ‘military-industrial complex.’) He railed about how these people enriched themselves at the expense of the taxpayer (and those nations in the world who ended up on the bad side of the US’s yo-yo, bipolar foreign policy). He told me that he knew that the US military had a history of being the “muscle” for big global, US based business and that it made him sick. He expressed his disgust at the fact that his military would run cover for big fat cats who would pillage for their own gain. But he save his greatest scorn for what he called, “my stupid fellow Americans” who let these people get away with their crimes. He said that with Americans, it was easy. He said, “just wave the flag and they all get into line and shout, ‘go team go.’ All the while these criminals are making themselves rich.”
I can seriously say that I really liked this guy. Not much different from the average decent person anywhere. A good family man who loves his job and his country and wants to do the right thing. Interesting that he thought the source of the problem was the gullibility of those who let a few evil men use patriotism to hide their crimes.
By the way, Indiana Tom, NATO and most of the organizations you are thinking of are nothing more than make-work projects for those very same “generals” (and bureaucrats) that my friend the pilot was talking about. NATO, for example, exists to defend against an enemy that no longer exists. But do you think all those people are going to just go home without their salaries, perks, expense accounts and retirement benefits. (Not to mention all the consulting contracts they will get after they retire.) I think the parasites who are “supping at the American table” are a lot closer to home than you think.
Indiana Tom says
Military Industrial Complex is well know for being Jimmy Dean Pure Pork Sausage. Most Military Industrial Projects are Porky Pig and make work projects.Swamp Thangs like Lindsey Graham and John McCain always love American Interventionism and Globalism. Still, other countries take advantage of the USA and a new day is dawning where these groups might not get quite the free rides that they have gotten in the past.

A big mistake is being made, again.
After 9/11 Alqaeda wasn’t adequately pursued and destroyed. There was laxity and lack of boots on the ground in Afghanistan. There was a crucial delay and a wrong dependence on some of the Afghans and Bin Laden and Alqaeda commanders escaped to Pakistan.
Then instead of completing the task of demolishing Alqaeda and also simultaneously confronting the Saudi sponsored world wide Wahaabi propaganda and indoctrination, Saddam was attacked. A huge mistake.
Jihadis found new ground in Iraq, where there was absolutely none before; mayhem ensued, spreading to Syria and other Arab lands.
Inadvertently the Shias got strengthened. They oppressed the Sunnis in Iraq and Syria.
Sunni jihadis, especially ISIS, gained ground and unleashed their evil, hurting many innocent humans all over.
Once again the whole effort to crush the Sunni Wahaabi terrorist jihadis is getting derailed with this new focus on Iran. There is sabre rattling and the potential for war with Iran. Meanwhile, the Sunni Wahaabis will again be strengthened. Saudi Arabia’s Wahaabi propaganda is being overlooked. There is diversion again. There is still a lot of work to be done in Africa, e.g. against the Sunni Jihadis.
What dangers lie ahead? Will the Sunni Wahaabis, the real danger, be placated with this pressure on the Shias? It will strengthen their cause.
What further evil from them is to befall on the world in the future?

Lavéritétriomphera says
Learn Europe history, France, ancient Gaulle, has been (as England and a part of Germany) a Roman province during nearly 6 centuries. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe emerged as it is now.
France had lost 1 million men during World War I, and when the Germans invaded the country in 1940, we were not prepared, and the legal Vichy government colaborated with the Nazis, and persecuted his own people! The prime minister Pierre Laval even said at that time, he wished a Nazi victory and his collaborators persecuted the Jews.
At that time my father was a very young soldier in the French Army, and as many of his brothers in arms he joined the Free French forces. Many of his fellow citizens joined the French Resistance and made important contributions to the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/spies-saboteurs-and-d-daybreak.

Some of these comments are conflating the issue of Islamic theology with the geopolitical decision to limit nuclear proliferatíom through an international agreement. At what point will the “imperfect Agreement” become perfect? I think that is the question? Forget the spin that so many experts and other parties to the deal all agree, it’s working. That is horse manua. The obvious answer is that it will just make the situation unmanageable down the road. Trump is visionary and made a smart move. Let everyone go back to the drawing board and the good think Mr Trump left the door open thereby creating an opportunity to come up with a better agreement for all parties involved.
Iran is not comfortable with that offer for reasons best known by themselves. My best guess is that such efforts to workout another agreement will not sit well with their nuclear ambitions. Otherwise, if they were honest and had nothing to hid, they would support the idea of redesigning a new deal. Pure and simple.
