Prisons the world over are hotbeds of jihadi recruitment and training. This kind of thing is bound to happen.
“‘Militant’ inmates kill five police in prison where Jakarta’s ex-governor is held for blasphemy,” South China Morning Post, May 9, 2018:
Five Indonesian police officers and a prisoner were killed in clashes at a high security jail that saw Islamist inmates take an officer hostage, authorities said Wednesday, with negotiations underway to secure his release.
The deadly riot broke out late Tuesday at the facility inside the Mobile Police Brigade headquarters in Depok on the outskirts of Jakarta.
It comes several days after the arrest of three terror suspects accused of plotting to attack the police headquarters and other facilities in the same area.
“There have been six fatalities – five of our comrades are dead and one of them also (died),” said national police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal.
“One of our officers is still being held hostage. To prevent things from getting worse, we’re going to keep negotiating so we don’t have to go to the last resort,” he added, without elaborating.
A dispute broke out after several prisoners demanded that they be given food sent to them by their families and managed to grab some of their jailers’ firearms, authorities said, adding that the secure facility was on lockdown.
Some of the prisoners involved in the clashes are Islamist militants jailed on terror-related charges, according to police.
However, authorities rejected a claim from Islamic State (IS) group made through its Amaq News Agency that it was responsible for the riot.
“Those (IS) claims are not true at all,” Iqbal told reporters on the scene.
“The trigger (for the riot) was food, which must be checked to make sure there is not other stuff hidden inside it.”
Police said they would hold a press conference later Wednesday.
Among the facility’s prisoners is Aman Abdurrahman, an Islamic radical jailed for orchestrating an attack in Jakarta in 2016 that left eight people dead.
Former Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who was sentenced two years in prison for blasphemy after losing a re-election bid, is also held in the jail.
Abdurrahman and Purnama, better known as Ahok, are not housed in the part of the prison where the riot broke out….

Should prisons be abandoned because terrorist attacks cannot be prevented? Same logic applies as any other combat zone. Fight there or fight here. There is no peace with a group that declared war and conducted it for 1400 years.

Wait–why do you think someone accused of “blasphemy” should be in prison at all–let alone with a bunch of Jihadists?
Frank Anderson says
GI, it has been suggested on JW that Afghanistan should be abandoned to jihadis because terrorist attacks cannot be prevented in Kabul. If that is true, then every city, country and even prison establishment should be abandoned if they host a terrorist attack. That way the terrorists win by using just 1 successful terrorist attack to force retreat. Where, once we decide to run, do we stop running? “We can’t stop Hitler from bombing London; Therefore we should surrender London to Hitler?”

Frank, Jarkarta’s ex-governor has been imprisoned on “blasphemy” charges. civilized places do not do this–this is Shari’ah. I completely oppose this. That he is in prison with murderous Jihadists makes this all the worse–he is in terrible danger.
I don’t believe that it is possible to encourage freedom and democracy in Dar-al-Islam–this is not something pious Muslims want. Most Muslims want Shari’ah per their vicious creed. We tried in Afghanistan and Iraq–these have been infamous failures.
We can continue to waste our blood and treasure on this fool’s errand, but I don’t believe we are apt to have any more success.
There are a handful of virtual apostates there, and I feel badly for them–but Islam is the problem, not that Infidels have not tried hard enough.
And no–I do not believe that we should cede our lands to Muslims because they commit violent Jihad here–in fact, nothing would so far embolden them as that. Instead, I think we need to take our lands back.
We largely isolated Islam for almost two hundred years, and Jihad was almost unknown in the West. I think this is the best policy.

By the way, my mother was in the British Army during WWII, and the building she was working in in London suffered a direct hit–luckily, the bomb was a dud. They never considered surrendering.

Nor should we surrender now. Islam has been at war for 1400 years. We need to accept the fact that Islam’s goal has no boundaries to its intention to conquer. When it took weeks or longer to make long trips, some measure of isolation was possible. Now that the entire world can be circled in a few hours or as little as 90 minutes there is no way to isolate a ravenous, suicidal opponent. We cannot “leave” “them” in Afghanistan. “They” have already come to “us”. Any place that is allowed to become safe for “them” also becomes a place for “them” to attack “us”.
Remember Chamberlain’s words in the UK Parliament about Czechoslovakia v. Germany, approximately “. . .a dispute between people far away, about whom we know little. . .” Repeating 1938 Munich also will almost certainly mean other deadly repetitions. “Those who cannot remember . . .” Jorge Santayana, The Life of Reason (1905). Always with greatest respect and best wishes.

Hi, Frank–thanks for your reply.
I believe the main problem is not places like Afghanistan, but that we are allowing Muslims to enter the West. If we were not allowing Muslims to flood into the West, most of their threat to us would be gone.
We have incredible resources in the West, certainly–but no, I don’t believe that we could conquer and hold the entire Muslim world, nor that we would have a chance of mitigating Islam in any serious way in a place like Afghanistan, which is virtually 100% Muslim.

Chamberlain basically handed over little civilized Czechoslovakia to the Nazis–withdrawing from Dar-al-Islam is *not* the same thing. Handing Israel or East Timur over to Muslims would be silmilar, but that is *not* something I am suggesting.
I am just saying that a place that is already completely Islamized such as Afghanistan is not a place we can save.

Remembering history is *exactly* what I am suggesting, Frank–we had almost no problem with Jihad just a few decades ago, and the main thing that has changed since then is that too many of us have forgotten the threat of Islam, and are foolishly allowing in hordes of Muslim invaders.

Same to you, Frank–always good to correspond with you.

GI, whether the details match or not, we have the same goals. There will be a war as long as there is islam. It is more a question of where it is conducted and which “property” is destroyed. Remember the idiot in charge of UK bombing of Germany before Churchill was made PM- “don’t bomb German war plants because they are private property”. I suggest that conceding any “property” to the enemy is an error. But, I don’t think it is my decision to make. Continued strongest and best wishes to you.

Why should a criminal be punished just because of where he lives? Whatever put them in the joint, if they had lived elsewhere and perpetrated their handiwork on kafirs, Islam would have said “no crime has occurred.” If they had been born in the Middle East they could have told the West they were “refugees” and been the vanguard of Islam by victimizing Europeans.

Indonesia police has just stated that the terrorists are currently controlling the whole prison, including the part/block where Basuki, the former governor is held.
Guy Forester says
Another reason to not believe official press releases. Basically, the old adage that if the government denies it, then it must be true probably applies here. Since the government insists that the riot is over food and not inspired by ISIS, then it must be just the opposite until proven otherwise.
The PTB will not readily admit that the place is infiltrated by ISIS and that the intelligence section was asleep at the wheel.

Anyone else see something wrong here?

Yes–and they have also locked up a man on “blasphemy” charges here, too. There is no justice in Islam.
