Newsweek happily uses this information to continue its ongoing policy of demonizing Christians and whitewashing Islam, but if Newsweek’s Jason Le Miere really thinks that this is a sign that Muslims are integrating and accepting Western values, he could be in for a rude surprise. Many Islamic groups in the West support same-sex marriage solely for tactical reasons: they know that breaking the idea that marriage involves only one man and one woman will open the door to the legalization of polygamy. This is step toward the Islamization of society, not a step away from Sharia. Italy’s largest Muslim organization made this clear when it called for the legalization of polygamy on the basis of the legalization of gay marriage.
The Qur’an contains numerous condemnations of homosexual activity: “And Lot when he said to his people, ‘Do you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds? Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.’…And We rained upon them a rain of stones. Then see how was the end of the criminals.” (Qur’an 7:80-84)
Muhammad specifies the punishment for this in a hadith: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.’” (Sunan Abu Dawud 4462)
These teachings have not been reformed or rejected in the U.S. So the idea that Muslims in the U.S. are more “liberal” and “tolerant” than evangelical Christians is, at best, uninformed.
“Majority of U.S. Muslims Now Support Gay Marriage, While White Evangelical Christians Remain Opposed,” by Jason Le Miere, Newsweek, May 1, 2018:
Opposition to same-sex marriage has decreased across a broad swath of religious groups in the United States, with white evangelical Christians one of the few movements for which a majority remains in opposition. Three years on from the Supreme Court ruling that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, the findings from the Public Religion Research Institute’s 2017 American Values Atlas, published Tuesday, showed growing support for LGBT rights, including a majority of U.S. Muslims backing same-sex marriage for the first time.
Muslims, by a margin of 51 percent to 34 percent, favor same-sex marriage, compared to just four years ago when a majority, 51 percent, were opposed. There were similar results for black Protestants, with 54 percent opposing gay marriage in PRRI’s 2014 American Values Atlas, compared with 43 percent in the latest findings.
Indeed, opposition to same-sex marriage is now limited almost entirely to white conservative Christians. Fifty-eight percent of white evangelical Christians and 53 percent of Mormons—an overwhelming majority of whom are white—are opposed to allowing gay couples to marry. The group with the most opposition, though, is Jehovah’s Witnesses, a group which is 36 percent white, 32 percent Hispanic and 27 percent black in the U.S. Just 13 percent support the law….
