The Coptic Christians are under tremendous pressure in Egypt, and in that light it is understandable why Pope Tawadros would say this, as preposterous as it is: to state the truth might make the situation even more difficult for Egyptian Christians.
In reality, they have been oppressed for centuries, and when that oppression was relaxed, Islamic hardliners made sure that the relaxation was temporary. Just one example from my new book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS: in 1301, according to the fourteenth-century Muslim historian Ibn Naqqash, the vizier of Gharb in North Africa visited the Mamluk sultan al-Malik an-Nasir and several other high dignitaries in Cairo, including the emir Rukn ad-Din Baybar al-Jashangir, “who offered him magnificent presents and received him with the greatest distinction.”
But the vizier was not happy with what he had seen in Egypt: the dhimmi Jews and Christians were “attired in the most elegant clothes” and “rode on mules, mares, and expensive horses.” Even worse, they were “considered worthy of being employed in the most important offices, thus gaining authority over the Muslims.”
Back home in Gharb, by contrast, the Jews and Christians were “maintained with constraints of humiliation and degradation. Thus they were not permitted to ride on horseback, nor to be employed in the public administration.”
The emir Rukn and several others were impressed, and “unanimously declared,” according to Ibn Naqqash, “that if similar conditions were to prevail in Egypt this would greatly enhance the [Muslim] religion.”
New rules were implemented swiftly. Ibn Naqqash continued: “The churches of Misr [old Cairo] and Cairo were closed and their portals were sealed after having been nailed up….Next, the dhimmis were dismissed from the public administration and the functions that they occupied in the service of the emirs. They were then prohibited to ride horses or mules. Consequently, many of them were converted to Islam.”
Of course: the light of its truth was shining brightly. Click here to preorder The History of Jihad, the first and only comprehensive history of jihad worldwide — not just against Europe, but against India, Africa, Israel, the U.S., and more — in the English language.
“Egypt has been model for coexistence between Christians and Muslims for 14 centuries: Tawadros,” Al-Masry Al-Youm, July 14, 2018:
Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria Tawadros II participated in a ceremony at the Egyptian Embassy in Austria on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of the revolution of July 23, 1952.
The ceremony, held Thursday evening, was attended by more than 50 ambassadors and diplomats, beside 300 other attendees who warmly received the Pope.
Tawadros expressed happiness about participating in the national occasion of the July 23 revolution.
He added that Egypt had a long history and civilization and has been a model for coexistence between Christians and Muslims for 14 centuries….
OldFatBaldSociallyIneptRon says
Just add Pope Tawadros to the long list of cowardly religious leaders, chicken-shit heads of state, and whitewashing educators so fearful of being labeled as Islamophobes to be honest and historically factual. Never forget what we learned from George W Bush as the World Trade Center was still smoldering “Islam is peace” ha ha ha.

Find some place in the Muslim world where Christians aren’t oppressed….and THE WORLD STANDS STILL!
Solomon says
Copts have no tradition of resistance. Most Copts either try to make peace with Muslims, or flee when the situation is too bad. Then there are the Copts who express their resentment of the situation with outbursts of rage, most importantly in the complete absence of Muslims and only when they are together.
I’ve noticed that Copts always try to explain their situation to Muslim, who are either in denial or try to shift the blame on Copts. There is nothing for a Copt to gain by this measure. Just more Islamic nonsense.
If Copts didn’t acquiesce so much, if only the Church would give up harmful traditions and try to move into the 21st century, if only they stopped trying to make peace and start resisting.

When Mr. Muhammed says the the historian quoted by Robert Spencer ‘is unknown’, does he really mean ‘unknown to Mr. Muhammed’?
eduardo odraude says
The historian cited by Mr. Spencer is unknown? No, the very first words out of Ibrahim Itace Muhammad’s mouth are easily proved to be lies, like most of what he says, because he is, sadly, a brainwashed mental slave to a system he has never adequately researched or questioned.
A Google search of the historian Spencer cited, “Ibn Naqqash”, shows a lot of citations, so Ibrahim Itace is lying, Naqqash is well-known, at least to educated people (which obviously does not include Itace):
https://www.google.com/search?biw=1707&bih=759&ei=z5dLW4T5A-Gf_Qa7yqXwBw&q=%22Ibn+Naqqash%22&oq=%22Ibn+Naqqash%22&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0i22i10i30k1.4546.7264.0.7540.2.2.0.0.0.0.32.40.2.2.0….0…1.1.64.psy-ab..0.2.39…0i10i30k1j0i8i30k1.0.MtMtxV6GNjg
The above is a general google search, where I included quotation marks around Ibn Naqqash. If one searches not in the general category, but only in books for “Ibn Naqqash”, one also gets plenty of references:

Basically, Ibrahim Itace Muhammad is following “prophet” Muhammad’s statement that “war is deceit”. It should be added that in the core Islamic texts of Islam and in the example of Muhammad’s life according to the earliest Muslim biographies, Islam means a war to dominate the world and to subjugate non-Muslims under a discriminatory brutal regime of Islamic law.

There are many more references, as poster eduardo odraude notes.
And then Ibrahim itace muhammed cites Egypt, “Palestine”, Syria and Iraq as models of Muslim/Christian relations–the only problem is that Christians are under violent threat in all of these places, and with the possible exception of Syria, face actual *genocide* there. Muslims regularly kidnap, rape, and murder Christians there, as well as regularly attack and destroy Churches there.
So *this* is what this vicious Mohammedan considers ideal relations. *Ugh*.

NB Arabs are not the native people of Egypt. Nor are they native to Syria, Lebanon, North Africa and Oh-so-many places in the Middle East. The present dominance of Arab identity in the ME results from the conquest of those lands by the Arab marauders, with the native peoples eventually identifying with their overlords, even to some degree managing to hold on, at great cost and suffering, to their Christian faith.
eduardo odraude says
A similar dynamic partly holds sway among Catholic officials, I suspect. Some of them also are concerned that if they criticize Islam, one of the results will be the death of Christians in the Muslim world.
The Islamic world thus keeps the Christians somewhat like hostages. Worse, that Muslim-Christian relationship in Muslim nations is less an explicit one among the Muslim masses than an emotional implicit one, a semi-conscious one, inculcated by Islamic clerics and teachers, in whom the domination-subordination relationship IS conscious.
Thus among the Muslim masses, a tendency to treat Christians as hostages to be brutalized is a spontaneous tendency, a mob tendency, not something most people ever have a chance to reflect upon. Reflection is inhibited in the Islamic world by the lack of freedom of speech, particularly with respect to Islam, and by Muhammad’s statement that Allah hates when someone asks too many questions in disputed religious matters.
And because among Muslim masses in the Islamic world the hostage relationship to Christians is less a conscious reality than it is a spontaneous emotional tendency, the brutalization of Christians can easily spark up unpredictably and without any conscious check or limitation by principled reflection.
One of the advantages Islam has is that it inculcates that hostage relationship to Christians in a way that is partly camouflaged in a very large mass of religious and quasi-historical materials. Muslims in the Islamic world learn the relationship to Christians not as a totally conscious doctrine (except among the clerics, where it is conscious), but more as a half-unconscious way of life in many ways indirectly learned, not just from clerics, but simply by living among the social institutions and social circumstances that the clerics have created over many generations.
Because the totalitarian character of Islam is immersed in a swamp of Islamic texts full of details often secondary to or irrelevant to Islam’s totalitarian thrust, it is tremendously easy to miss the forest for the trees, if one is so inclined — if one is, for example, a certain kind of liberal who does not want to see that totalitarian thrust, or on the other hand if one is an Islamic propagandist who seeks to hide that totalitarianism until it can be securely imposed.
Muhammad was to a large extent correct that war is deceit. This is true to some extent everywhere about war. Sun Tzu seems to have said the same thing.
Islam is distinctive in that it brings into the core of a religion something that has to do with states or with the formation of states — war and the use of violence.
Thus, since Muhammad’s religion is a religion of war, it is also a religion of deceit.
Now, even if one assumes that the Bible’s account of Christ is a pure tissue of fantasy, one can still see that the teachings attributed to Christ — “my kingdom is not of this world,” and “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, to God the things that are God’s,” and the teaching that the Christian who would be greatest must not lord over others but must be a servant leader and even wash others’ feet — one can see how these teachings, by giving an impetus to push religion and state apart, also help reduce deceit and war in the religious realm.
The fact that many Christians have been deceitful throughout history and have fought religious wars is not to blamed on the Christian paradigm itself, but on deviation from that paradigm, and on those “Christians” who, for the sake of power, merged their version of Christianity with state power.

Richard says
Ibrahim: The Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost is NOT God’s wife. HE is God, one of three Persons in God as is seen in the Torah (Genesis) where three “men” approach Abraham and Abraham refers to them as “My Lord”. Yes, this can be confusing, which is why every year on Passover the Jews used to shout (and maybe still do) “The Lord our God, the Lord is One!” That is not saying there is only one God (which there is), or it would say so. Rather it is showing that it can be confusing, and therefore affirming the Truth.
The Hebrew word for God is Adonai, which is plural. Singular would be Adono. When God confronts Adam and Eve after their eating the forbidden fruit, He speaks to Someone unidentified about Adam and Eve being like “Us” from eating the fruit. It wasn’t Adam and Eve he was talking to, so Who else was it. I contend it was the other Two Persons of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Ghost proceeds from the love between the Father and the Son, so He is most certainly not God’s wife! He is seen as a Dove for a very good reason. The Hebrew word for Dove, (Jonah), means “the Destroyer”. It was the Destroyer who wiped out all the firstborn sons of Egypt in one night and then drowned Pharaoh’s Army. Jesus warns us that sins against the Father and Son will be forgiven, but not any sin against in the Holy Ghost, so I would not mess around insulting Him, if I were you.

Exactly. Pointing fingers at Pope Tawadros and the Copts while living in a non-Muslim country, sitting comfortably behind computer screens and punching in some pithy comments is quite cheap, and everyone can be a braggart.
The true spirit of the Coptic Church is epitomized in the behaviour of the 21 Copts who had been assassinated at the hands of ISIS in Libya. They refused to convert to Islam, and all of them were beheaded in a most barbarous manner. They are now saints in the Coptic Church. But martyrdom is not for everyone, and Pope Tawadros is responsible for the whole Coptic community trying to protect his people and steering clear of further major persecutions at the hand of Muslims. The difference between Pope Francis and Pope Tawadros is that the former is lying about Islam because he is dazzled by liberation theology and multiculturalist ideology whereas the latter is lying because he must. And, of course, the West prefers looking the other way, while Pope Francis is addressing some lukewarm encouragements at the Oriental Christians from time to time.

Dapto. I have to agree with you. Pope Francis should take a good look at all the good the Catholic Church has done over the centuries. If he feels the Church is equal to Islam, or that it should tolerate the disgusting tenets of Islam, he certainly should resign the Papacy. His duty as Pope is to fight Islam, the head-hunters of Borneo, etc., not to push decent Catholics to feel ashamed they do not have an open mind toward joining those religions. Ibrahim Itace Muhammad is a mental slave who has never had the opportunity to really think about and study the system that enslaves him. I lived Islam the first 25+ years of my life, which contributed a great deal of hating Islam. I was FORCED to study the Koran by imams from Al=Azhar (the most prestige Islamic body. This helped me in my fight against Islam after 9/11 (started 9/12/2001)..
We are at war with Islam since 1979. The Copts have suffered the Islam persecution since the Muslims invasion of Egypt to this very day.
In my opinion Pope Tawadros has THE MOST sensitive ‘job’ in the world. Every single word he utters are watched by Muslims. Any word which is not very uncarefully uttered can cause a huge disastrous to the Copts.
“Egypt has been model for coexistence between Christians and Muslims for 14 centuries: Tawadros,”
His words have some truth in them. Look at the Christians of the ME. They almost vanished. The Copts still in existence, I can say strongly so. They have never raised a physical weapon against Muslims. Their strength comes from the power of prayers. The Coptic church is called the myrtles church.

I agree with Mr Spencer that when under persecution, there is no freedom of speech, one cannot speak the truth. In the early eighties when the late Pope Shenouda wrote an article in which he indirectly listed the atrocities that happened to the Copts , the persecution multiplied, and the Pope was put under arrest in the monastery for many years.
You can imagine how regretful Pope Shenouda was that he brought this to his flock.
It is true Pope Tawadros should not have said what he said, however I just want the readers here to understand that in moslem parts of the world, there is no freedom of speech.
Please look up online some videos of Pope Shenouda ‘s lectures in which he broke in tears and wept , while this was unrelated to the content of his religious lecture. He was under tremendous pressure.
